Lady Land Studios After becoming seriously ill and needing to quit work, Rachel of Lady Land Studios turned to her creativity to find a way to earn a living while also allowing her time to recouperate. She found she was inspired by all things with a vintage flavour including dress patterns, cameos, vintage objects and prints. Rachel also found that she was passionately drawn to the intricately designed Yuzen Washi Japanese rice paper. What she came up with was an entire line of original jewellery pieces based on what she was interested in. The range also includes a stationary line and an expanding range of hair and wedding accessories. Many of her items utilise everyday objects in a new way (scrabble tiles and metal bottle caps just to name two). 2012 will see an expansion of vintage designs and themes into all her jewellery. Rachel is happy to discuss and do custom orders. Handmade in the Hunter Market www.handmadeinthehuntermarket.com.au www.facebook.com/handmadehuntermarkets http://twitter.com/handmadehunter

In Broke started out as a private dinner catered by an Italian chef, and has grown into a two day regional celebration of all things central to the Italian concept of La Dolce Vita – wine, food, music, family and community. Each year, over 3,000 people visit the region to participate in A Little Bit Of Italy In Broke, with many coming back again and again. How it works Visitors can start their journey at the Passport Office on Broke’s main street, pick up a passport and a souvenir glass for $5, then follow the trail to discover the range of themed activities at each of the 12 participating venues, including: • Italian cuisine and cooking demonstrations • Olive picking and olive products • Bocce (Italian bowls)

• Live music, market stalls and more As the visitor travels from venue to venue they can get their passport stamped, allowing them to go into the draw for over $2,000 worth of local premium wines, gourmet products and accommodation packages. On the Saturday evening, five venues will be hosting Italian-themed dinners accompanied by live music (bookings essential). For more info see the website www.brokefordwich.com.au

Tasting in the Hunter Millbrook Estate Winery Over the last few years Millbrook Estate Winery has been developing some new wine products and our Lemonella® and Chilli Wine® have been well received by their customers. As a licensed distiller, they have extended this new product range to fruit liqueurs, based on grape spirit, distilled from grape wine, yeast lees and the like. For example after watching the fruit off their old mulberry tree fall to the ground or to be eaten by the channel-bill cuckoo birds, they are now picking them and making Mulberry Liqueur. The range has been extended to include ginger, orange, lemon and aniseed liqueurs all of which are proving to be popular with customers,

who are looking for something different. They provide a sensational flavour impact on the pallet and make great gifts! However, the most sucessful of Millbrook Estate Winery products developed over this time has been the Brandy Liqueur, although these products are a little dearer than wine due to the excise tax. (Remember it takes 10 litres of wine to produce 1 litre of brandy). They also make and sell sparkling wine, red and white table wines, fortified wine and some lower alcohol sweeter wines, which are becoming popular.

These products are only available at the winery cellar door at 1617 Mount View Road, Millfield. Ph:4998 1155 open 7 days 10am- 5pm www.millbrookestate.com.au

Welcome to autumn in Lake Macquarie. March marks the arrival of glorious weather – still warm enough to swim, and ideal for exploring some of the city’s fabulous walking and cycling trails. One of Lake Macquarie’s favourite destinations, the Warners Bay Foreshore Shared Pathway is suitable for walking, cycling, rollerblading, scooters and more. The path begins at Eleebana and winds its way along the Lake foreshore for 9km. The first highlight of the path is the Redbluff Boardwalk, an elevated section built out over the water providing panoramic views. The pathway travels through popular picnic areas and passes Warners Bay, the unofficial dining capital of Lake Macquarie. Here you will find a fantastic selection of restaurants and cafes, many complete with water views. Further on, the trail takes in Speers Point Park and concludes at the Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery at Booragul. Speers Point Park is the city’s flagship park and is home to the award winning Lake Macquarie Variety Playground. Kids will delight in taking a play break here, while parents will love the accompanying café. Held in Speers Point Park on the 4th of March is the sixth annual Lake Macquarie Paddlefest. Raising money for The Salvation Army, Paddlefest is a fun family day out featuring dragon boat, kayak and outrigger racing, entertainment from local bands, a camping and holidaying exhibition, market stalls and food and drink. Business to Business TALKING BUSINESS by Brett Gleeson

Mentors add value to your business Being in business has many challenges. Having someone to talk to has many advantages. We can talk to our mates or life partners, however they may not have the necessary experiences to provide sound advice. We also don’t want to jeopardise our personal relationships if things don’t go as we wish. So finding an independent mentor could be a better option. Good business mentors provide objective insights with frank and honest advice. They won’t get caught up in the personal dynamics of a relationship or friendship. The right mentor should have some experience appropriate to your business. A good mentor will ask many questions and they may provide some answers. Often there will be no right or wrong solutions, so you

may need to just weigh up your options and take a calculated punt. Remember it’s your business, not your mentors, so it’s best if you come up with the answers yourself. Talking about the issues really does help to crystallise our thoughts. A good mentor must be honest and tell you ‘how it is’ from their perspective. They should provide encouragement and constructive feedback. When you find a mentor, informally set some round rules about how the mentoring will work. This would include how often you will meet, where and for how long. Once a month for a couple of hours is a good starting point. If the mentor is giving their time ‘free’, make it easy for them. Value their time (even if they are retired) as much as you value your own. There are volunteer (free) and professional (paid) mentors available through your local Business Enterprise Centres like the Business Growth Centre. You can opt in and out as you like. Give it a try. You and your business may reap the rewards Brett Gleeson Centre Manager Business Growth Centre www.mybgc.org.au

Valley View, Cessnock

Cessnock Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast. The Darkinjung people were the major indigenous inhabitants at the time of European contact and the City of Cessnock still abounds in indigenous place names and names with indigenous association such as Kurri Kurri, Laguna and Congewai. Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland. During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including

automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the last twenty years. Consequently many areas have undergone a change in character, with rural residential housing development and weekend retreats becoming popular. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries.

The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convictbuilt Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures.

What to See & Do ■ Visit the Cessnock Regional Art Gallery and view their current exhibitions featuring Australian artists. ■ Take in the scenic views from the Bimbadeen Lookout on the Great North Walk. ■ Tour the many local vineyards in the Lower Hunter.

Ever thought of building a mountain in Laguna Hall? Probably not. That’s what Valley Artists are attempting for their first production for the year. K2, the mountain, is the secondtallest peak on the planet, rising to an elevation of 28,251 feet on the border between Pakistan and China. K2, the play, is a 75-minute harrowing tale of two mountain climbers who are stranded on a ledge at 27,000 feet. It is a tale of friendship and morality, of love and mortality; of climbing, quantum physics and the search for God. K2 is known as the Savage Mountain due to the difficulty of ascent and the second-highest fatality rate among the "eight thousanders" for those who climb it. For every four people who have reached the summit, one person has died trying. In essence K2 is an old-fashioned melodrama. Valley Artists are committed to this production attending weekly classes for mountain climbing. Tickets are available at Laguna Store and Wollombi General Store. Or contact boxoffice@valleyartists.org or phone 4998 3419.

When is a print and original work of art? An original print is a work of art created through contact with a matrix such as a stone, block, plate, or screen. It is printed manually by the artist or under the artist's direct supervision and is approved by the artist for quality and excellence. A printmaker is necessary to assist the artist to infuse this medium of art making with a form of its own so that it can come to life in a refreshing fashion. Diana Davidson along with Peter Stevens and with Michelle Perry, under the respective banners of Whaling Road Studio and Marnling Press, are printmakers. Davidson and Stevens operates a printing press and Perry uses screens for printing. Both are renowned in the Australian art industry as

professional, adaptive, precise and astonishingly knowledgeable. Their exhibition at Maitland Regional Art Gallery (MRAG) is an opportunity for visitors, at first hand and very directly, to view some very progressive work representing the outpourings of many contemporary artists whose art is invigorated through the hands of these experienced printmakers. Maitland Regional Art Gallery presents many carefully prepared, formed and presented works of art and also to place on exhibition such a different array of styles and approaches to a variety of subjects and themes. This is an exhibition that MRAG is proud to place on display and can be seen until 18 March at the gallery located 230 High Street Maitland.

Inspirational Health Inspirational Health’s philosophy is a belief in the body’s innate ability to heal itself and return to balance, given the right environment. Our daily lives, experiences, food choices and stressors move our bodies from a place of centre and balance to one of being ‘off kilter’ and imbalance. These imbalances manifest in all sorts of ways, symptoms and disease. By giving your body the right environment to return to balance may include making some lifestyle changes, better food choices and supporting your body with herbal medicine. Tammy is a university qualified Naturopath and Massage practitioner with a background in medical science and has a passion for educating clients to be empowered to optimise their health and prevent disease. She is practising at Inspirational Health in Newcastle. Tammy offers a range of natural therapies in a restful and caring environment. Morpeth

www.hunterimag.com.au

Morpeth is an area of outstanding natural beauty and offers a great experience for everyone who enjoys the pleasure of a walk in a country village with the opportunity of shopping and dining in unique style. It's a little place not far from Maitland, with a history to make us all proud. Morpeth was once upon a time a busy river port and frontier town established during the late 1820's. The Heritage buildings and Bond Stores stand in testament indeed, Morpeth was the largest inland seaport of the new Australian colony and commercial icons Brambles, Simsmetal, Arnotts and Soul's Pharmacy were born in this magnificent place. Set along the banks of the Hunter River, the drive to Morpeth is an added attraction. The green fields stretch for miles and the weeping willows sway in the breeze. It is very hard to find a place to match our beautiful Morpeth.

As you stroll through the cobblestoned village you will notice that Morpeth has everything from art galleries to specialty shops to a Trading Post and even a Bazaar. Local artisans and craftspeople have their wares for sale throughout the town. You will have the opportunity to taste locally made fudge and sip ginger beer. Fine fashion, teddy bears, art and craft, tempting treats to take home, beautiful jewellery, home furnishings and objects of interest, we promise that you will find them in Morpeth. A range of restaurants and cafes offer al fresco dining, river views, heritage surroundings and a cosmopolitan standard of menu. Grab a bottle of the finest wine available for tasting from the local wine cellar then select your café, even the most finicky of foodies will find something to their liking. Morpeth does have its own museum, a service that traces family names and

Homestead for tales of the olden days of bushrangers, graziers, and other characters who inhabited one of the greatest Australian cattle and horse studs of its time. Have a look at the rare architect-designed barn built around 1867, and the gracious Colonial Georgian country house. Tocal Homestead is a very popular venue for weddings and milestone celebrations. Paterson has inspired many artists to pick up a brush to try to capture this picturesque Australian country town on canvas. Take the time to look at the many fine old homes, grand commercial buildings, museums, art gallery, pubs, cafes, parks and shops that contribute to Paterson’s unique style. 9km north of Paterson is Vacy, with rugged Mt George to the west. It is well worth a visit to the café, hotel, arts & crafts shop and general store for a taste of country hospitality, great food

and quirky crafts. Travel over the Vacy bridge, circa 1898, to Bunna Bunoo olive grove and gift shop. You can see the roof tops of the cabins and lodges such as Banjos Bushland Retreat and Cabins in the Clouds on Mt George, perfect destinations for weekend getaways or a longer stay. The small towns of Gresford and East Gresford are the gateway to Lostock Dam, Mt Allyn and the Chichester State Forest to the north. Take the Allyn River Road drive past homesteads set among rolling green hills and granite outcrops. Visit Clevedon craft shop, Natural Furniture Works, the Beatty Hotel and Camyr Allyn winery. History lovers will enjoy a drive to St Anne’s Anglican Church and suspension bridge, and St Mary’s on Allyn at Allynbrook. Art workshops organised by the Arts Council are held regularly in Murrurundi. Upstairs Art Teaching Studio and Gallery holds weekly art classes as well as monthly workshops which are being held on the last Sunday of each month. The focus early in the year will be on ‘stretching your style’ by examining and teaching the principles of abstract art and the versatility of acrylic painting. This will allow artists to add another dimension to their artistic expression as they explore new ways of presenting their art. Call Rodney for art classes and workshops on 042 777 5707 or email: rodney@upstairsart.com.au. Upstairs Art website is www.upstairs-art.com.au Rodney Swansborough and his wife Pearl Moon are both ‘artists-in residence’ at Upstairs Art. As artists, Rodney and Pearl produce fascinating and very different art styles. They both will be exhibiting their art work around the state in coming months and will be holding a major exhibition in Muswellbrook in August this year. The ‘Pearl Red Moon Gallery’ at Upstairs Art exhibits Pearl Moon’s latest art works. (see advertisement p37)
