Garlic. Where does it come from? Yes, the quick-witted amongst us will say, “the fruit & veg shops!”, and we’d all be chuckling… but I mean from where does garlic originate? Where does it grow wild? It might be a common assumption to say that it comes from the Mediterranean area, but it was actually brought there from another area a long time ago. Research suggests that garlic originated in Central Asia and stretched from an area as wide as Western China through to India to Egypt and the Ukraine. Interestingly, it is thought that garlic has been grown up to 10,000 years ago, shortly after the last Ice Age and seminomatic hunter-gatherers dispersed garlic throughout Central Asia. It is one of humankind’s earliest cultivated and traded crops. A 5750 year old garlic artefact was found in El Mahana in Egypt. Indian Sanskrit indicates dispersal of garlic 5000 years ago. And the Chinese may have been cultivating garlic 4000 years ago. Today, wild garlic is really only found in Central Asia, centered around Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan. Fresh Eggs, Cucumbers, Tomatos, Relish, Passionfruits, Plums… all shared by generous friends, family and neighbours in the last week. Nothing helps build a sense of community more than the sharing of homegrown and homemade. Handpicked juicy plums from a neighbour’s 2 abundantly fruitful backyard plum trees were unexpectedly delivered and brightened our day. Fruit and veg that may not be perfectly uniform but taste like they should. I have clear memories of preserving jars in the kitchen cupboards, throwing kitchen scraps to the chooks, the delight of wriggling a carrot top in the garden and pulling it out, cracking macadamias in the vice in my grandpa’s shed and peeking under leaves looking for fresh strawberries to eat warm off the bush. When did our food become so shrink wrapped and packaged up with long expiry dates? It’s easy to feel disconnected from food when it comes this way. I wonder if our children know if a plum grows on a tree and a carrot in the ground? Have they ever cracked a nut from it’s shell? Discover the pleasure of eating real food close to the source. Newcastle Beaches Newcastle is well-known for its stunning coastline and it is one of the few cities in the world that can say it has eight beaches within five minutes of its city centre. Nobbys, Newcastle, Bar, Dixon Park and Merewether Beach, just to name a few, are attractive must-see locations for any visitor to the city. June 2007 storms thrust Nobbys Beach into the International spotlight after the grounding of the massive Pasha Bulker cargo ship on its shores. March: Summer displays You probably have noticed the brilliant purple flowers of the Tibouchina just starting to emerge. They are an excellent display in the garden from now until winter starts to set in. Check your local nursery as there are some new varieties available to choose from. Now is a good time for planting. Most of your bulbs can be planted now to enable you to have lots of flowers in late winter and early spring. A good soil for growing bulbs is a Rich Organic soil that is rich in humus. You can add some compost, and or some slow release fertilizer just below the base of each bulb to kick start it however keep the ground around the bulb quite firm, finishing with a light water. Make sure you have installed adequate drainage so as not to encourage rot to set in. Drainage in your garden or lawn can be a major factor in the long term success of any gardening project. If planting a vegetable garden prepare your soil before planting by digging in some Blood & Bone or Cow manure, or if you are just starting out, some Rich Organic Garden Soil. The Lang Family of Newcastle is set for a busy 5 weeks of training as they prepare for the Sparke Helmore NBN Triathlon Festival taking place in their home town on the 15-17th March. Tim, Melissa, Callum and Zach are all set to get out and have a go at Newcastle’s largest participant-based sports event. The boys are both eager to get out into the field; looking forward to the friendly and encouraging atmosphere of this annual event. The Lang boys are supported by their parents Tim and Merissa. Tim, a seasoned triathlete has entered the main event- the Olympic Distance Triathlon on Sunday and is training hard. Mum Melissa is set to compete in Friday’s NewFM Foreshore5 twilight fun run amongst around 1000 other participants. Cessnock & Kurri Kurri Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast. Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland. During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the

Here you will discover the geographically blessed towns of Paterson, Vacy, Gresford and East Gresford, ringed by the ancient Moonabung Ranges and criss-crossed by the pristine waters of the two rivers that flow from the Barrington Tops. Between 200 and 300 super fit riders will gather at the beautiful Estate near Sandy Hollow to test their skills to the limit over the Fast 4-hour or the Furious 7-Hour Races. Both are endurance events with competitors entering as individual participants or in relay teams. The trail is a fairly recent addition to the wonders of James Estate which backs on to the rugged Wollemi National Park in the Upper hunter Region in New South Wales. Estate manager, Graeme Scott who is a mad keen Mountain Biker said he was thrilled that the Grand Prix had come to the area. Both male and female riders compete in the series.
