What a change in season brings...
What a difference a change in seasons can make. Daylight saving ends and we somehow gain an hour and by May we are ready for winter to kick in. Winter brings scarfs, boots, jackets, it also brings new exhibitions. Two of the regional art galleries in the Hunter/Newcastle Region are Muswellbrook Here Be Monsters, 13th May - 9th June

The Print Circle collective was established in 1970 and now includes 30 women artists – their exhibition presents new work described by the collective as delving into “the vastness of the mind and imagination and the landscape of a life explored”. “Black Harvest” is a collaborative exhibition with multiple references to the Hunter Valley. Locals and visitors will enjoy this exhibition, which

presents both individual artworks about the local landscape and interweaves narratives of personal history and political opinion by Devine and Tilley as well as a series of works made in 'collaboration'. From 28 May until 7 August “Black White & Restive” is exhibited at Newcastle Art Gallery, which continues the national conversation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists. Curated from the gallery's own collection and extensive national loans. The exhibition is supported by Arts NSW's Curatorial Support Initiative grant. This exhibition includes works by Albert Namatjira, Rex Battarbee, Gordon Bennett, Imants Tillers, Margaret Preston, Tony Tuckson, Iidiko Kovacs, Tim Johnson and many more. At Gallery Sixty One Revisited on Hunter Street, “Be Here Monster” is themed from all things weird and wonderful found in nature. All type of art is on display and for sale from the usual suspects: painting, drawing, printmaking to experimental works using mixed media and
found objects. Starting on the 13 May, this exhibition also aims to “unify the Newcastle art community and encourage emerging artists” says gallery owner Caroline Christie who sourced this exhibition via the gallery Facebook open-call-out. Cstudios Art Gallery is in the beautiful old Bellevue Hotel, lovingly refurbished by gallery owner Jo Chisholm-Ray. You will find works on display by Geoffrey Breen, slowly making a name for himself in our region. He works big but detailed, and his paintings capture the shadows of outdoor furniture in the backyard while leaning towards the soft blue palette. Keep heading down Hunter Street until you reach Beaumont Street and there you will find Gallery 139 where from 18 May until 4 June 'gallery represented artist' Flynn Doran's “Rumination” exhibition is featured. Doran’s sculptures remove all the unnecessary elements of design and are described by the Newcastle based artist as “inspired by the poetry and personal debris we leave in life”.

Nova Cruises
Newcastle Whale Watching season set for record numbers The annual whale watching season is set to start June 1 and Newcastle boasts some of the most stunning locations to watch those frolicking giants of the sea, and a range of whale watching tours to get up close and personal with these gentle monsters of the deep. General Manager from NOVA Cruises, Peter Hanrahan, says this year is set to be a bumper season with the highest recorded numbers of Humpbacks set to pass Newcastle since whaling ceased on the East Coast back in 1962. “Back then it was estimated there were only 200 to 500 Humpbacks left in the East Coast population. This year we are anticipating over 20,000 Humpback whales to pass the Hunter coastline. We are slowly making our way back to predicted numbers of 36,000 to 40,000 which used to migrate pre-whaling days”, Mr. Hanrahan said. From late May through to early November each year, Newcastle’s stunning coastline comes alive with the annual migration of thousands
of majestic humpback whales. The whales are making their way from feeding grounds in the icy Antarctic Southern Ocean to the warmer waters off northern Queensland.
.COM.AU
As well as whales, dolphins, seals, sea birds, sharks and more can be seen from the city’s shores. Guests onboard NOVA Cruises can be confident in spotting a whale with the company boasting a 94% sighting rate last season. For the few that are unfortunate enough not to see a whale the company offers a free return stand-by cruise to try their luck again. The 2016 Whale Watching Season operates from June 1 to August 31 sighting whales on their Northern migration and again from September 24 to October 29 viewing mothers and their newborn calves on their Southern migration.

GOOD MURDER About the play by Robert Gott
North Queensland, 1942. William Power and his rag-tag acting troupe arrive in Maryborough to keep up the wartime spirits of the populace. Naturally they decide to put on Shakespeare’s bloodiest (and arguably his worst) play: Titus Andronicus. But before the play can open, young Polly is murdered. William is accused of the crime and decides to use his powers of acting to clear his own name. Gott is a leading Australian crime writer. His detective, William Power, a masterful comic creation, has featured in four of his novels. Amy Hill is directing the cast that includes Luke Power (as William Power), Alistair Anderberg, Rosemary Dartnell, and Jake Gillies. Special benefit performance for Newcastle Writers’ Festival June 3rd where Robert Gott will be in attendance. Newcastle Theatre Company 90 DeVitre St Lambton. Raymond Terrace Historic King Street. Courtesy of King Street Confectionery Photographed by: Jake Bush
Situated where the Hunter and Williams Rivers meet, about 25 kilometres north from Newcastle along the Pacific Highway, Raymond Terrace is home to Port Stephens Council. It is also the hub for the surrounding river flats farms and communities with two shopping malls and all essential services. The town has been bustling with a variety of industries since the early 1800’s and there are many beautiful historical buildings and attractions to remind of its long history. Good sandstone was quarried close to the town in the 1800’s and used in the local Anglican and Catholic churches, houses and stores. The Old Rectory and historic St. John’s Anglican Church are a wonderful example of these building. The Old Rectory has been lovingly restored and is a beautiful venue for a high tea or other special events. In its early days, a tannery and a steam sawmill were also built, and boat and shipbuilding, farming and dairying became important industries. The business centre developed in King Street, adjacent to the river, where many of the old two storey timber shops and residences still stand today. Nowadays you

The Williams River is a popular skiing spot and hosts annual skiing events and boat racing, facilitated by two boat ramps close to the city centre. Riverside Park is located adjacent to the Hunter River on Hunter Street just a short walk off William Street, the main street in Raymond Terrace. This park is ideal for a rest spot or for a picnic with its scenic river views. The park boasts a great playground, barbecue and picnic facilities and a public wharf. Leisure and entertainment activities are catered for by the Hunter Botanical Gardens, an Aquatic Centre, Ten Pin Bowling Alley, YMCA Gym and Scotty’s Cinema. There are plenty of motels situated close to town and a choice of caravan parks.

Help the Gardens celebrate 30 years in 2016 In May 2016 the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens will celebrate its 30th anniversary, nearly 150 years after planning for the establishment of a botanic garden in the Hunter Region commenced. Regarded by many as one of the jewels of the Hunter, the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens have been transformed by dedicated volunteers from a weed-infested 133 hectare bushland site into a botanic collection enjoyed by the community and visitors from around the world. Significantly, 2016 will be a watershed year in the development of the Gardens, with the anticipated formalisation of a long term partnership with Hunter Water which will provide the financial security necessary for the Gardens to maintain its current operations and to provide for future development. The Gardens Board of Directors, volunteers and staff are keen to involve the local Hunter community in our anniversary celebrations and we are planning a number of events in the lead up to May. These will be publicised over coming months.
You can support our beautiful Gardens in a number of ways: • Visit the Gardens with your family and friends • Support our special events • Support our Kookaburra Café, gift shop and gallery • Take a guided tour • Use the Gardens for your wedding or function • Become a volunteer / member • Make a donation • Follow us on Facebook We would like to make 2016 a year to remember and would love to share our excitement with you all. We hope to see you soon. Hunter Region Botanic Gardens 2100 Pacific Hwy Heatherbrae NSW 2324 Email: admin@huntergardens.org.au www: huntergardens.org.au 02 49871655 / 02 49871440

There’s lots to love in Lake Macquarie this autumn It’s a perfect time of year to spend with family and loved ones in this beautiful city. Autumn is a wonderful time to enjoy the open space around the lake that makes some of the most perfect picnic spots. Seize the day and enjoy the sunshine with family and friends. Here are some of the top picks for picnicking in Lake Macquarie: Pelican Foreshore Reserve – the grassy, shady expanses of Pelican Foreshore provide plenty of room for a fun-filled family picnic. Kids will love the playground, and you can launch the boat for a day of fun on the water or try your luck fishing off the jetty. Speers Point Park – this huge park is known to locals as the hub of Lake Macquarie, hosting various events and markets 22

throughout the year. The highlight of the park is without a doubt the award winning Variety Playground that kids will have endless fun on. There’s plenty of room to kick a ball, room to run the dog off leash, and a fantastic pathway along the foreshore for a relaxing stroll or a ride on the bike. Head to the park on the 2nd or 4th Saturday of the month and stock up on fresh produce at the popular Farmers’ Markets. The Pines Picnic Area, Watagan Mountains – if you’re looking for a different type of atmosphere, pack a picnic and head up the Watagans Mountains! The Pines Picnic area is just one of many great picnic spots in the Watagans. The Pines is a favourite due to the beautiful pine trees that shade this serene natural picnic area. After lunch, enjoy a walk along The Pines
What to See & Do Indulge in delicious cuisine while you take in the magical view at Warners Bay. A rich wine growing area During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convict-built Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures. 30

Mural No. 55
Murals no 55 and 56 unveiled in Kurri Kurri
Mural No. 56
The Town Entry Mural, mural no. 55 for the area, was officially opened by State Member for Cessnock, Clayton Barr MP in September 2015. Over a year in the making, it is one of the most ambitious murals to date, and was constructed to welcome visitors entering Kurri Kurri from the Hunter Expressway. A number of important cultural and economic aspects of Kurri Kurri’s history are included in this mural by local artist Peter Sesselmann – from our Aboriginal past, the development of coal mining, employment in aluminium smelting and textiles production to our current tourism attractions of the Murals Project and the annual Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival. The Kurri Kurri Police Station mural is the 56th outdoor mural for the area. Located on the wall of a heritage building, it involved approvals from Cessnock City Council and the Police Department. Newcastle based mural artist Ben Mellon from MO Creative was chosen to undertake the job of recreating a photo from the 1940s of the Kurri Kurri Police Station and some of the local characters, including Police officers Alvin “Clive” Churchill and Claude Dimmock, the sons of Sgt Dawes (the OIC of the Station) and the

Clerk of the Court. The mural was officially opened by Superintendent Craig Jackson, Central Hunter LAC Commander. The opening was attended by the Dimmock family who allowed us to use the photo containing their father, Claude Dimmock, who was the longest serving officer at Kurri Kurri; a total of 33 years. Kurri Kurri and the surrounding areas feature over 50 outdoor murals – magnificent public artworks that tell the story of the people, events and places that shaped the unique character, culture and heritage of the area. The area is now home to the largest display of outdoor murals in mainland Australia, attracting thousands of visitors each year from across Australia and overseas. The annual extravaganza held in the small town of Aberdeen in the Upper Hunter, renowned for its strong Scottish heritage, is being held on Saturday, July 2 at Jefferson Park, Aberdeen. Now in the 17th year, the highland games is an event for the whole family. It features the massed pipes and drums, individual pipe band displays, Tartan Warrior’s with their feats of strength, Scottish highland and country dancing and many stalls. Being Aberdeen’s signature event, the highland games involves the whole community and in the past has been well patronised by families from all over the Hunter Valley and beyond. Visitors, guests, pipe bands and others will be coming from as far as Lithgow, Moree, Dubbo, Tamworth, Armidale and the Sydney metropolitan area as well as interstate to take part in the grand combination of history, pageantry and novelty. A grand parade within the grounds will kick the programme off at 9.00am. Honoured Guest for this year’s event will be Lachie Macdonald, High Commissioner for Clan Donald in Australia. Aberdeen Highland Games president Charles Cooke said, “We are indebted to the mining industry, the thoroughbred industry and many others within the Upper Hunter region for their ongoing support. Surplus funds, have each year been put back into the local communities which has amounted to a figure in excess of $80,000 since 2000.” The games will be followed by a Ceilidh, a Celtic social gathering with a fine meal, music, stories and dancing at St Joseph's high School MPC on Saturday night from 6.30pm. Introducing Lachlan Neil Macdonald High Commissioner Clan Donald Australia
Lachlan Neil Macdonald was born in the small village of Balivanich on the Island of Benbecula in the Western Isles of Scotland. His paternal grandfather and great grandfather were from the village of Bracadale, Duirinish Region of the Isle of Skye. Along with his Australian wife, Wilga, he migrated to Australia in 1977 settling on the Central Coast of NSW. Throughout his working life he travelled extensively, first as a Merchant Navy Officer, followed by various engineering and management IT posts in Europe, South East Asia and Australia. In 1991 he established his own specialist IT company and managed the business till retirement in 2008. Business demands required regular visits abroad and this travel allowed him to maintain regular contact with Scotland and the Road to the Isles was never too distant. Originally, he joined Clan Donald NSW in 1982, but family and business demands restricted his involvement in Clan and Celtic activities. Then retirement allowed him the time and energy to contribute to the promotion and enhancement of their Celtic heritage. He does this in the strong belief that one should never forgo their heritage, and recognise with pride the contribution the Scottish forbearers gave in the development of our Nation. Throughout the year in support of their Celtic culture, Wilga and Lachlan attended many Scottish
and Celtic events scattered across NSW, interstate and overseas, encouraging individuals and families to support their respective clans and share their individual history throughout the Scottish Diaspora. Lachlan is the President of Clan Donald NSW/ACT and in 2015 was appointed by Lord Macdonald, as the Australian High Commissioner of Clan Donald. Wilga and Lachlan have two sons and six grandchildren.
