You might be forgiven for driving past Entice Café on Ken Tubman Drive in Maitland, we almost don’t want to tell you about it as it’s our little secret….. The café is part of the Quest Apartments building. There is no parking outside the café, so the O T I R main car park is a good idea as D it is just over the road. The café itself is bright, clean om and fresh and the service has m enda always been incredibly warm and welcoming. We first started going there a year ago when our pup was just a few months old as we can sit in the covered courtyard at the front. We now have two dogs and they are always made to feel as welcome as we are. The menu is quite varied, although we confess, the burger and hot chips is a firm favourite. We are creatures of habit! Of course you don’t just have to have breakfast or lunch – with great coffee and tea available and a selection of sweet things we’ve seen many people just drop in for a natter over a slice. It’s our favourite bolt hole in Maitland. We can’t fault the friendly service, good food and central location. They’re open in the evenings too!

Garlic “cuts high blood pressure” A lot of us have high blood pressure and a lot of the reason for this is due to our high octane lives. The good news out of the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition is that garlic extract seems to help reduce blood pressure. A study, lead by Karin Reid while at the University of Adelaide, showed that her patients had an average reduction of about 12mmHg over a 12 week period. ‘’What’s exciting is that the garlic was able to reduce blood pressure in that medicationresistant group,’’ Dr Reid said ‘’But it doesn’t just have one possible mechanism of action … and that is probably what makes it superior to other medications, which only have one mechanism,’’ she said. While larger scale tests were necessary, the initial findings were interesting. So, if you thought garlic was just for keeping vampires and colds away, then this might be good news, especially for those who have heart problems. Heartbreak House by George Bernard Shaw Directed by John McFadden 10th to 24th May, 2014 The action takes place in Heartbreak House, in a room designed to recreate the interior of an old-fashioned ship. Captain Shotover, eccentric retired sea captain, represents England’s past glory. He presides over a household of characters like a monarch over his empire. He has two goals left in life: to learn how to explode dynamite with his mental powers, to be able to blow up all profiteers and exploiters; and to attain the perfect state of tranquillity he calls “the seventh degree of concentration”.

Kurri Kurri & Cessnock to Wollombi
A rich wine growing area During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convict-built Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures. 26

Landscape from Two Points of View 15th May - 8th of June Paintings & prints by Peter Griffen and Debra Liel-Brown
The two points of view represented are from the very widely exhibited painters, Peter Griffen and Debra Liel-Brown. While their work is quite different stylistically it is the result of similar processes from the direct experience of the landscape to the production of the final art works. As Peter said, “A painting is not a work of art until it seems to be imbedded with that indefinable life force that enables it to resonate with nature.” Opening celebrations Saturday 17th May at 2pm. The Three Os – Orban, Olsen and Ogburn 2 May – 29 June
With over ninety works drawn from major institutions and public collections, The Three O’s: Orban, Olsen & Ogburn, reassesses the creative paths of three unique artists. As art writer Hugh Speirs observed, “The ‘Three Os’, as Orban called them… exercised considerable influence towards the acceptance of more radical approaches to art in the fifties and early sixties in Sydney, and thus in Australia.” This touring exhibition explores the legacy of Desiderius Orban and that of two of his students, John Ogburn and John Olsen. Both later taught at Orban’s studio before blazing their own trails in Australian Art. The arrival of European refugees such as Orban (Hungary) assisted in changing perceptions of modern art within Australia. Orban’s mantra was “art equals creativity”. He celebrated the idea of the artist as innovator. His views on creativity spread through his teaching as well as through his highly influential publications Layman’s Guide to Art, Understanding Art and What Is Art All About? These ideas were influential in the development of his many students, most notably Olsen and Ogburn. Image: Ogburn: Autumn Still Life.

‘All Tied Up’ at The Museum of Clothing Up to 24th August 2014 The story of ties might seem to be a pretty dry subject but research has revealed they can be as surprising as they are pedestrian. This exhibition sheds light on some of the lesser known details of mens’ neckwear, why and how they were worn and the ‘secret language’ of ties. The Tie Society of Australia recently passed its entire collection to the Australian Museum of Clothing and Textiles and this is the first opportunity to view some of their intriguing ties. Set up in 2003 by avid tie collectors Colin Randall and Judy Ryan, the Tie Society of Australia collected ties that were representative of everyday trends as well as those that were unusual, outlandish or significant by their association with an interesting or prominent person. This collection has been the inspiration to present ‘All Tied Up’ which gives the public a chance to see how significant a part the tie plays in our culture. Come along and see some of the most unusual ties you have ever seen and learn how ties reflect not only fashion trends but the highs and lows of the times, the status and wealth of a man and even his opinions. At The Museum of Clothing Lt Gov. House, Maitland Gaol Open: Thursdays 10am - 3pm, Fridays 10am - 2pm, Saturdays 10am - 3pm. For more information call 0403 652 550
