Garlic is coming out! Say it loud and proud! Garlic is loving the springtime and is growing tall and strong (see photo). By now, garlic should have 10 leaves stretching upright but then bending over at about half the length along. The bottom leaves may be already (or soon should) start to die off. This is natural and normal. It’s the plant saying “I don’t need to grow up any more, but I do need to direct my energies to creating the bulb”. Hence, above the ground, the plant will die off over the next month or two but, below the ground, the bulb will be growing and this will be a good thing! The best time to pick garlic from the ground is when about 6-8 of the leaves have died off. This gives as much time as possible to let the bulb grow big and full, without letting it over-ripen or split open. Beer as It Should be

Last month saw the first Lovedale Polo Championships. It was a great day, a sunny afternoon with beautiful horses and, of course, Champagne, Pinot Grigio finished with a rich Hunter Shiraz. The Adina team was the winner of the inaugural trophy. The boys had the incentive of a box of the Adina silver medal 2011 Shiraz - not sure if bribes are ok but it seemed to work. Here’s the thing with Lovedale - There is so much happening: Polo, music most weekends, the best dessert bar in the world, horse riding, a number of restaurants with breakfast and Champagne, Tapas, an annual long lunch and award winning wines like this month’s near summer focus: Semillon. Jancis Robinson, an English wine critic, reportedly one of the world’s leading wine writers, said: “Hunter Semillon is the best in the white wine in the world.” Semillon, with its honey and lemon aromas and its crisp clean fruit style is perfect with seafood. The lovely citrus aromas and low acidity makes it the perfect summer wine. In keeping with the Polo theme this month’s quote is a revamp of an earlier one: “ Water is for horses and wine is for man” “Drink Champagne when you are happy, Champagne when you are sad and Champagne to celebrate life and your friends to celebrate your death”

November: Time to plant your Christmas flower display

Replace your spring annuals with some bright Begonias, Marigold, Petunias and Impatiens to give you a festive display of colour for Christmas. We recently won a global award presented by The International Festival and Events Association (IFEA). 4. What does it mean to you to be a Novocastrian? Novocastrians have been described as hardworking and genuine people. They are reliable, friendly and down to earth, and possess a never-give-up, nevergive-in attitude. I am proud to be a Novocastrian. 5. What do you love most about Newcastle? Newcastle offers a great outdoor lifestyle. I think we have one of the best coastlines in the world, which includes a wonderful working harbour and your choice of so many naturally beautiful beaches. It offers imagination, sophistication and a laid back surf culture it has all the services that larger cities do without the grief of crowds and traffic congestion. It also has a vibrant live music scene. 6. Do you have a favourite place to eat, a favourite watering-hole or place just to hang out? Favourite place to eat is Bocado’s Spanish restaurant in King Street. I love their Paella, Pan con Tomate and the Patatas Bravas. As far as watering holes are concerned there are so many good ones, favourites would have to include The Albion Ale House, The Clarendon and my local the Prince of Wales Hotel. For live music it’s hard to go past the Wickham Park Hotel and The Lass O’Gowrie.

The annual Catalina Festival at Rathmines celebrates Lake Macquarie’s rich war history at the former site of the largest flying boat base in the Southern Hemisphere. The festival involves flyovers from various aircraft including the RAAF Roulettes, market stalls, live entertainment, historical displays, kids activities and of course, the famous Catalina Seaplane. Popular weekly event Music in the Podium also makes its return this month to the Warners Bay Foreshore. Cessnock & Kurri Kurri Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast. Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland. During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the

last twenty years. Consequently many areas have undergone a change in character, with rural residential housing development and weekend retreats becoming popular. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convictbuilt Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures.

Robyn's painting is the product of intense observation of her immediate environment, from the coastal fringe near her home at Pearl Beach, the Hawkesbury River and central Australia to the countryside of Italy, Spain and France.

This is a substantial exhibition of over sixty works, ranging in size from classical miniatures to large canvases, and is sure to delight audiences from across the region. HOME: From 23rd November, an exhibition by four sculptors: Tammie Castles, Melissa Laird, Jane Theau and Mandy Pryse-Jones. These artists won the 2011 Sculpture in the Vineyards Cessnock Regional Art Gallery prize. Together they explore and question the concept of home, using installation and sculpture to look beyond the surface of the material and immaterial structures in their lives.

Maitland Regional Art Gallery (MRAG) along with Maitland City Council is showcasing some of Australia’s most successful visual artists. Inspiring artists: recipients of the Pat Corrigan Artists’ Grant is an exhibition which looks at the long term positive and in some cases dramatic effects on artists who early in their careers were the recipients of small grants. For fifteen years more than one thousand artists were awarded with a Pat Corrigan Artists’ Grant. The grant scheme, managed and promoted by NAVA (the National Association for the Visual Arts), assisted artists in the early stages of their artistic careers, subsidising the costs of public presentation of their visual arts, crafts and design work. Many of the grant recipients have gone on to achieve national and international success as artists. This exhibition is a small selection of Pat Corrigan Artists’ Grant recipients. Pat Corrigan is still a patron of NAVA and also one of two MRAG Patrons. Awards such as this, although not huge in monetary value, provide needed encouragement and boost an emerging artists confidence, provides validation and inspiration to continue in a profession which provides rewards in unique and unusual ways. Many of the artists went on to develop substantial artistic and creative careers contributing to the long term cultural Australian landscape. The artists represented in the exhibition include Lionel Bawden, Nike Savvas, Patricia Piccinini, and includes local artists Brett Alexander Braddon Snape, Michelle Brodie and Nell who recently reatured in a solo show at MRAG. The exhibition runs from 9 November 2013 – 17 February 2013 with the opening celebration 17 November - everyone is welcome and entry is free.

Callicoma Hill for a unique evening of historic movies under the stars in the Hunter Valley. Entertaining and historic films include short films from the 1920s to the 1950s, plus the classic 1946 Australian feature film 'Bush Christmas'. The films are all suitable for children. The films will be screened on a

traditional reel to reel projector with the surrounding forest providing a fitting ambience. Bring your own drinks, comfortable chairs or rugs to sit on the grass, plus supper to share. Tea and coffee will be provided. You can also bring a picnic or barbecue dinner to enjoy before the movies begin. Bookings are essential. Camping is available if you wish to stay at Callicoma Hill overnight.

New Hunter Valley Spring Sports Festival 9-11th November: 3 days – 6 events Singleton will this year play host to a vibrant new sports festival aiming to promote the importance of a healthy work life balance to the industrious city. Set to run on the 9th11th of November 2012 the Hunter Valley Coal Belt Multisport Festival will run over the course of 3 days and include 6 diverse events of varying difficulty aimed at getting citizens off the couch and into an active weekend. Novice and recreational athletes are invited to enter the Singleton Sunset Twilight Fun Runs on the evening of Friday 9th November. Event organizers are offering two very achievable distances (4km and 8km), both set to take athletes on an enjoyable track through the scenic civic precinct on Singleton. Families and walkers are also encouraged to enter. On Saturday the 10th November the Festival will pick up its pace with an early morning Royal Pain 57km Mountain Bike Race into Mountain Royal National Park, Saintly Swim -1500m Open Water Swim at

Lake St Clair and 20 and 10km Kayak Cove Races. In the afternoon all children are invited to enter the Country Kids Triathlon, and give multisports a go! On Sunday 11th November the main event, the Hunter Hillyman Triathlon, will take place at Lake St Clair. The course will live up to its name with a challenging cycle course. The triathlon event will offer an Olympic Distance (1500m swim, 40km Cycle and 10km Run) and also an Enticer Distance (300m swim, 10km Cycle and 3km Run) catering for both amateur and elite athletes. It is expected that a large number of the Hunter and intestate triathlete community will attend, guaranteeing a challenging competition for all entrants. Festivals of this nature are increasing in popularity among the multisports community and have proven themselves to be a great medium to provide an event catering to all athletes, novice or elite. The Australian Infantry Museum will be closed to visitors from the 8th June 2010 to the 31st August 2011. For further details contact the Museum Manager Captain John Land. The Royal Australian Infantry Corps Museum was established in 1911. The Royal Australian Infantry Corps Museum has undergone many changes over its 97 years. Now located within the School of Infantry, the museum tells the story of the Infantry Soldier from colonial days through to current operations. The Infantry Corps new $13m museum showcases its history, equipment and contribution to Australia’s heritage. The building was opened by CDF Gen David Hurley at Singleton on September 1, coinciding with the anniversary of the centenary of the School of Infantry's opening. Six-weeks of bad weather hampered the completion of the museum and

pushed back the opening of the galleries to late October. The site displays the Infantry Corps’ extensive collection of 5500 catalogued items, including equipment, weapons, battlefield artefacts, training documents and soldiers’ stories. Throughout the galleries and exhibitions the profile of the Australian Infantry Soldier is displayed with actual weapons, uniforms, equipment, maps, medals, pictures, stories, personal letters and videos, as used during these operations. Other significant exhibitions include a historical display of the Royal New South Wales Regiment and the Royal Australian Regiment. Closed from 8th June 2010 to the 31st August 2011. The James Estate Ridge Walk The track to James Estate starts along the great Bylong Valley Way 15 mins from Denman. The Ridge Walk showcases the natural beauty of our region with commanding views in all directions, overlooking James Estate winery, the Goulburn River Valley and our highest peak Mount Dangar. The full trail is a signed four km (return trip) Grade 3 walk. To fully appreciate the experience it is best to allow 1.5 hours for the walk from the James Estate Cellar Door.
