Garlic is coming out! Say it loud and proud! Garlic is loving the springtime and is growing tall and strong (see photo). By now, garlic should have 10 leaves stretching upright but then bending over at about half the length along. The bottom leaves may be already (or soon should) start to die off. This is natural and normal. It’s the plant saying “I don’t need to grow up any more, but I do need to direct my energies to creating the bulb”. Hence, above the ground, the plant will die off over the next month or two but, below the ground, the bulb will be growing and this will be a good thing! The best time to pick garlic from the ground is when about 6-8 of the leaves have died off. This gives as much time as possible to let the bulb grow big and full, without letting it over-ripen or split open. Beer as It Should be
Last month saw the first Lovedale Polo Championships. It was a great day, a sunny afternoon with beautiful horses and, of course, Champagne, Pinot Grigio finished with a rich Hunter Shiraz. The Adina team was the winner of the inaugural trophy. The boys had the incentive of a box of the Adina silver medal 2011 Shiraz - not sure if bribes are ok but it seemed to work. Here’s the thing with Lovedale - There is so much happening: Polo, music most weekends, the best dessert bar in the world, horse riding, a number of restaurants with breakfast and Champagne, Tapas, an annual long lunch and award winning wines like this month’s near summer focus: Semillon. Jancis Robinson, an English wine critic, reportedly one of the world’s leading wine writers, said: “Hunter Semillon is the best in the white wine in the world.” Semillon, with its honey and lemon aromas and its crisp clean fruit style is perfect with seafood. The lovely citrus aromas and low acidity makes it the perfect summer wine. In keeping with the Polo theme this month’s quote is a revamp of an earlier one: “ Water is for horses and wine is for man” “Drink Champagne when you are happy, Champagne when you are sad and Champagne to celebrate life and your friends to celebrate your death”
At Morpeth Brewery & Beer Co we are passionate about brewing according to artisan principles, and aspire to produce all-natural beers from the finest quality ingredients, with no additives or preservatives. Our beers are naturally carbonated which means that the ‘life’ in the beer is the result of secondary fermentation in the keg, rather than by forced-carbonation as is commonly used by the big breweries. We believe that natural carbonation results in a more flavourful, complex and interesting beer. To ensure the ultimate in flavour we do not filter our beers ‘across the board’ as is the practice with the big breweries. We strongly believe that the filtration process removes much of the flavour and goodness from beer – including nutritious vitamin B – and so we prefer to allow our beers to clarify naturally. The traditional method of priming the beer and letting the yeast work its magic over the course of several weeks may be slow and inefficient by today’s standards, but we’ll take it gladly if the end result is beer we are proud to brand as ours. The Morpeth Brewery & Beer Co. microbrewery is located at the Commercial Hotel Morpeth: 127 Swan Street Morpeth NSW 2321. November: Time to plant your Christmas flower display
Replace your spring annuals with some bright Begonias, Marigold, Petunias and Impatiens to give you a festive display of colour for Christmas. Plant trees, shrubs, climbers and groundcovers while the weather is so receptive to new growth. Plant your tropical plants & fruits now. Make sure to provide good drainage for palms and adequate shade for your ferns, creepers & orchids. Mangoes, lychees and custard apples are all best planted this month. Check your garden for erosion. A thick layer of mulch will help prevent this and protect any shallow rooted plants. There
are many different types of mulch, whatever one you choose will help combat erosion. Trim your wattles, this will result in an even healthier plant next year. Remove any scale patches on leaves by rubbing off or spraying with white oil. Don’t do this in the heat of the day! Liquid fertilise your green vegetables every 2 weeks. Lone Surfer, Newcastle
Newcastle Newcastle is a vibrant cosmopolitan city which has everything from world-class surfing beaches, to the emerging food scene, Newcastle has it all. Explore and uncover the flavour and allure of the city’s streetscapes and waterfronts – each with its own feel and character. Five of the city’s pristine beaches are on the eastern side of the promontory. These include; Nobby’s Beach, Newcastle Beach, Bar Beach, Dixon Park Beach and Merewether Beach where there are swimming clubs, kite surfing, rock pools and baths, watching
www.hunterimag.com.au hang-gliders and surfing lessons. The Café culture is emerging with the most popular food areas in Darby Street in Cooks Hill; The Harbour waterfronts including Honeysuckle, Beaumont Street in Hamilton and The Junction. Newcastle is a city that embraces and nurtures creativity, and holds local arts practitioners in high esteem. Newcastle is host to a colourful and expansive array of art galleries, including the Newcastle Region Art Gallery, one of Australia’s leading
regional galleries. Much creative talent has originated in the city including the world-renowned band, Silverchair. Newcastle is all about the experience of different cultures and magnificent scenery. It is a place of attraction that can be enjoyed by everyone. Newcastle Beaches Newcastle is well-known for its stunning coastline and it is one of the few cities in the world that can say it has eight beaches within five minutes of its city centre. Nobbys, Newcastle, Bar, Dixon Park and Merewether Beach, just to name a few, are attractive must-see locations for any visitor to the city. June 2007 storms thrust Nobbys Beach into the International spotlight after the grounding of the massive Pasha Bulker cargo ship on its shores. A monument to the event stands at Nobbys Beach and is a stop off point for visitors and locals alike. Nearby is the Harbour break-wall and Nobby’s Lighthouse, perfect for that afternoon stroll and the ideal vantage point to watch 300m cargo ships come into port. Newcastle Beach is known for being one of the best surf locations in Australia along with Merewether
Beach, home to the annual International Surfest competition. Adjacent are the Merewether Baths, the largest ocean bath complex in the Southern Hemisphere – there is nothing else like this facility in Australia. The bath is a favourite for locals of a warm summer’s day and ideal for lap swimmers all year round. One of the city’s most outstanding historic landmarks is the Newcastle Ocean Baths. With its art deco architecture and picturesque views of the ocean, the bath has long been an icon of the Newcastle coastline. Adjacent to the ocean bath is Newcastle Canoe Pool, which once featured a map of the world with small islands representing the continents. The shallow canoe pool is the perfect place for young children to swim in safety away from waves and surfers.
A visit to Newcastle is not complete without a day on the beach. So grab a parcel of fish and chips and join the locals on the sand. Don’t forget to watch out for dolphins, a common sight off Newcastle’s beaches. To keep up with the weather, tides and surf check out @NDays on Twitter!

An Absolute Turkey by Georges Feydeau. Adapted from Le Dindon and translated by Nicki Frei & Peter Hall. Directed by John McFadden Georges Feydeau, master of French farce, wrote a succession of popular 'boulevard' plays in late 19thC to early 20thC. An Absolute Turkey provides true escapist pleasure. Everything plays out at double speed spinning to a surrealistic climax of complications and demonstrating the hypocrisy of human behavior. No one will ever feel sorry for the characters as they thrash about, caught in a nightmare of entanglements, a group of aspirant adulterers, rampant egotists and females bent on revenge all converging on room 39 in Hotel Terminus. Newcastle Theatre Company, 90 de Vitre Street, Lambton from 17 Nov -1 Dec. Call Viv 3-6pm for bookings on 02 4952 4958. Concessions/Group Bookings are available.

An Interview with Mark Stratford Major Tourism and Event Developer NSW Government City of Newcastle 1. What motivates and inspires you? People motivate me. I love helping, and making people happy, its very satisfying. I am inspired to be successful in my job by my family and by the love I have for Newcastle. 2. What do you do to relax? I love music, either listening to or watching live performances. I also like to read autobiographies about musicians and celebrities. 3. What’s next on the horizon for you? I am currently working on attracting some major international events to Newcastle. Our city has matured into being recognised as one of the world’s best festival and event locations. We recently won a global award presented by The International Festival and Events Association (IFEA). 4. What does it mean to you to be a Novocastrian? Novocastrians have been described as hardworking and genuine people. They are reliable, friendly and down to earth, and possess a never-give-up, nevergive-in attitude. I am proud to be a Novocastrian. 5. What do you love most about Newcastle? Newcastle offers a great outdoor lifestyle. I think we have one of the best coastlines in the world, which includes a wonderful working harbour and your choice of so many naturally beautiful beaches. It offers imagination, sophistication and a laid back surf culture it has all the services that larger cities do without the grief of crowds and traffic congestion. It also has a vibrant live music scene. 6. Do you have a favourite place to eat, a favourite watering-hole or place just to hang out? Favourite place to eat is Bocado’s Spanish restaurant in King Street. I love their Paella, Pan con Tomate and the Patatas Bravas. As far as watering holes are concerned there are so many good ones, favourites would have to include The Albion Ale House, The Clarendon and my local the Prince of Wales Hotel. For live music it’s hard to go past the Wickham Park Hotel and The Lass O’Gowrie.

With summer and the silly season almost upon us, things are really heating up this month in Lake Macquarie, including the warm weather. Lake Macquarie’s largest community festival starts November off with a bang. The annual Catalina Festival at Rathmines celebrates Lake Macquarie’s rich war history at the former site of the largest flying boat base in the Southern Hemisphere. The festival involves flyovers from various aircraft including the RAAF Roulettes, market stalls, live entertainment, historical displays, kids activities and of course, the famous Catalina Seaplane. Popular weekly event Music in the Podium also makes its return this month to the Warners Bay Foreshore. Held every Friday night until the end of March, bring along a picnic rug and relax by the lake with some great live music for company. Best of all, it’s free. Lake Macquarie is Australia’s 8th largest city, but you wouldn’t know it visiting. Lacking a traditional CBD, the area comprises of small town centres and villages spread across the stunning coastal environment. The region’s namesake forms a stunning water centrepiece; at twice the size of Sydney Harbour the lake supports a diverse range of marine life and many recreational activities, including boating, fishing, watersports, kayaking and swimming. For more information on Lake Macquarie’s beaches, and to obtain your FREE copies of our Visitor Publications, contact the Lake Macquarie Visitor Centre: 228 Pacific Highway, Swansea NSW

Kurri Kurri Mural - 'Bullocky'
Cessnock & Kurri Kurri Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast. Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland. During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the
last twenty years. Consequently many areas have undergone a change in character, with rural residential housing development and weekend retreats becoming popular. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convictbuilt Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures.

The central focus of her work is the role of nature and humankind's position in it, with mood and atmosphere created through the interplay of light and shadow, tone and colour. Roadways twist
and taper off into an unknown future where rooftops and buildings impose themselves upon rural backgrounds at differing stages of domestication. This is a substantial exhibition of over sixty works, ranging in size from classical miniatures to large canvases, and is sure to delight audiences from across the region. HOME: From 23rd November, an exhibition by four sculptors: Tammie Castles, Melissa Laird, Jane Theau and Mandy Pryse-Jones. These artists won the 2011 Sculpture in the Vineyards Cessnock Regional Art Gallery prize. Together they explore and question the concept of home, using installation and sculpture to look beyond the surface of the material and immaterial structures in their lives.

MAITLAND REGIONAL ART GALLERY | www.mrag.org.au

www.monthlyimag.com.au
Maitland Regional Art Gallery (MRAG) along with Maitland City Council is showcasing some of Australia’s most successful visual artists. Inspiring artists: recipients of the Pat Corrigan Artists’ Grant is an exhibition which looks at the long term positive and in some cases dramatic effects on artists who early in their careers were the recipients of small grants. For fifteen years more than one thousand artists were awarded with a Pat Corrigan Artists’ Grant. The grant scheme, managed and promoted by NAVA (the National Association for the Visual Arts), assisted artists in the early stages of their artistic careers, subsidising the costs of public presentation of their visual arts, crafts and design work. Many of the grant recipients have gone on to achieve national and international success as artists. This exhibition is a small selection of Pat Corrigan Artists’ Grant recipients. Pat Corrigan is still a patron of NAVA and also one of two MRAG Patrons. Awards such as this, although not huge in monetary value, provide needed encouragement and boost an emerging artists confidence, provides validation and inspiration to continue in a profession which provides rewards in unique and unusual ways. Many of the artists went on to develop substantial artistic and creative careers contributing to the long term cultural Australian landscape. The artists represented in the exhibition include Lionel Bawden, Nike Savvas, Patricia Piccinini, and includes local artists Brett Alexander Braddon Snape, Michelle Brodie and Nell who recently reatured in a solo show at MRAG. The exhibition runs from 9 November 2013 – 17 February 2013 with the opening celebration 17 November - everyone is welcome and entry is free.

Morpeth Morpeth is an area of outstanding natural beauty and offers a great experience for everyone who enjoys the pleasure of a walk in a country village with the opportunity of shopping and dining in unique style. It's a little place not far from Maitland, with a history to make us all proud. Morpeth was once upon a time a busy river port and frontier town established during the late 1820's. The Heritage buildings and Bond Stores stand in testament indeed, Morpeth was the largest inland seaport of the new Australian colony and commercial icons Brambles, Simsmetal, Arnotts and Soul's Pharmacy were born in this magnificent place. Set along the banks of the Hunter River, the drive to Morpeth is an added attraction. The green fields stretch for miles and the weeping willows sway in the breeze. It is very hard to find a place to match our beautiful Morpeth. As you stroll through the cobblestoned village you will notice that Morpeth has everything from art galleries to specialty shops to a Trading Post and even a Bazaar. Local artisans and craftspeople have their wares for sale throughout the town. You will have the opportunity to taste locally made fudge and sip ginger beer. Fine fashion, teddy bears, art and craft, tempting treats to take home, beautiful jewellery, home furnishings and objects of interest, we promise that you will find them in Morpeth. A range of restaurants and cafes offer al fresco dining, river views, heritage surroundings and a cosmopolitan

standard of menu. Grab a bottle of the finest wine available for tasting from the local wine cellar then select your café, even the most finicky of foodies will find something to their liking. Morpeth does have its own museum, a service that traces family names and shields, St Johns Theological college and is home to the beautiful St James church to name but a few of the significant buildings throughout the town. Just down the road a way is a structure of a different nature. The infamous Maitland Gaol is now open to the public, experience what it's like to walk in the footsteps of some of Australia's most notorious criminals. Morpeth, the town, the heritage, the buildings and carriage ways make this a place to not only visit but make a regular event.

The Allyn & Paterson River Valley Tocal - Paterson - Vacy - East Gresford - Gresford There is a lot on offer for visitors to the Allyn & Paterson River Valley, just two and a half hours’ drive from Sydney, an hour from Newcastle and where Dr Henry Lindeman planted his first grape vines in 1843. Here you will discover the geographically blessed towns of Paterson, Vacy, Gresford and East Gresford, ringed by the ancient Moonabung Ranges and criss-crossed by the pristine waters of the two rivers that flow from the Barrington Tops. First stop could be historic Tocal Homestead for tales of the olden days of bushrangers, graziers, and other characters who inhabited one of the greatest Australian cattle and horse studs of its time. Have a look at the rare architect-designed barn built around 1867, and the gracious Colonial Georgian country house. Tocal Homestead is a very popular venue for

weddings and milestone celebrations. Paterson has inspired many artists to pick up a brush to try to capture this picturesque Australian country town on canvas. Take the time to look at the many fine old homes, grand commercial buildings, museums, art gallery, pubs, cafes, parks and shops that contribute to Paterson’s unique style. 9km north of Paterson is Vacy, with rugged Mt George to the west. It is well worth a visit to the café, hotel, arts & crafts shop and general store for a taste of country hospitality, great food and quirky crafts. Travel over the Vacy bridge, circa 1898, to Bunna Bunoo olive grove and gift shop. You can see the roof tops of the cabins and lodges such as Banjos Bushland Retreat and Cabins in the Clouds on Mt George, perfect destinations for weekend getaways or a longer stay. The market is a great place to meet friends for a chat, have a morning tea or lunch and experience the buzz of attending a market. Stallholders have something for everyone and offer natural foods, health and beauty products, cards, plants and produce from the local community and much more. There are all types of items found amongst the bric-a-brac you just have to hunt for them to find them.
The small towns of Gresford and East Gresford are the gateway to Lostock Dam, Mt Allyn and the Chichester State Forest to the north. Take the Allyn River Road drive past homesteads set among rolling green hills and granite outcrops. Visit Clevedon craft shop, Natural Furniture Works, the Beatty Hotel and Camyr Allyn winery. History lovers will enjoy a drive to St Anne’s Anglican Church and suspension bridge, and St Mary’s on Allyn at Allynbrook. The Australian Infantry Museum will be closed to visitors from the 8th June 2010 to the 31st August 2011. For further details contact the Museum Manager Captain John Land. The Royal Australian Infantry Corps Museum was established in 1911. The Royal Australian Infantry Corps Museum has undergone many changes over its 97 years. Now located within the School of Infantry, the museum tells the story of the Infantry Soldier from colonial days through to current operations. The Infantry Corps new $13m museum showcases its history, equipment and contribution to Australia’s heritage. The building was opened by CDF Gen David Hurley at Singleton on September 1, coinciding with the anniversary of the centenary of the School of Infantry's opening. Six-weeks of bad weather hampered the completion of the museum and
pushed back the opening of the galleries to late October. The site displays the Infantry Corps’ extensive collection of 5500 catalogued items, including equipment, weapons, battlefield artefacts, training documents and soldiers’ stories. Throughout the galleries and exhibitions the profile of the Australian Infantry Soldier is displayed with actual weapons, uniforms, equipment, maps, medals, pictures, stories, personal letters and videos, as used during these operations. Other significant exhibitions include a historical display of the Royal New South Wales Regiment and the Royal Australian Regiment. Closed from 8th June 2010 to the 31st August 2011.
