The café is comfortable and everyone is greeted with a bright and cheery welcome by Warren, Barbara and their staff. It is a firm favourite for locals who like a good hearty brekky to start the day off right and weekend brunches are always popular. It’s a well-loved meeting place for cycling groups, car and bike enthusiasts. To the right as you walk in is the “Wall of Fame” – literally hundreds of photos of all the different types of people who have been to the spot over the years. What you can’t see as you drive past is the courtyard garden out the back. It’s a great space for a light lunch or an afternoon tea. As well as basic essentials on sale, Warren always has fresh seasonal veggies on sale from local farms (gorgeous plump tomatoes are coming soon) and don’t forget to pick up some of Barb’s home made jams and preserves – a deliciously indulgent treat that’s just too good to miss. Newcastle Newcastle is a vibrant cosmopolitan city which has everything from world-class surfing beaches, to the emerging food scene, Newcastle has it all. Explore and uncover the flavour and allure of the city’s streetscapes and waterfronts – each with its own feel and character. Five of the city’s pristine beaches are on the eastern side of the promontory. These include; Nobby’s Beach, Newcastle Beach, Bar Beach, Dixon Park Beach and Merewether Beach where there are swimming clubs, kite surfing, rock pools and baths, watching

www.hunterimag.com.au hang-gliders and surfing lessons. The Café culture is emerging with the most popular food areas in Darby Street in Cooks Hill; The Harbour waterfronts including Honeysuckle, Beaumont Street in Hamilton and The Junction. Newcastle is a city that embraces and nurtures creativity, and holds local arts practitioners in high esteem. Newcastle is host to a colourful and expansive array of art galleries, including the Newcastle Region Art Gallery, one of Australia’s leading

regional galleries. Much creative talent has originated in the city including the world-renowned band, Silverchair. Newcastle is all about the experience of different cultures and magnificent scenery. It is a place of attraction that can be enjoyed by everyone. ...will take you there!

Newcastle Beaches Newcastle is well-known for its stunning coastline and it is one of the few cities in the world that can say it has eight beaches within five minutes of its city centre. Nobbys, Newcastle, Bar, Dixon Park and Merewether Beach, just to name a few, are attractive must-see locations for any visitor to the city. June 2007 storms thrust Nobbys Beach into the International spotlight after the grounding of the massive Pasha Bulker cargo ship on its shores. A monument to the event stands at Nobbys Beach and is a stop off point for visitors and locals alike. Nearby is the Harbour break-wall and Nobby’s Lighthouse, perfect for that afternoon stroll and the ideal vantage point to watch 300m cargo ships come into port. Newcastle Beach is known for being one of the best surf locations in Australia along with Merewether Beach, home to the annual

International Surfest competition. Adjacent are the Merewether Baths, the largest ocean bath complex in the Southern Hemisphere – there is nothing else like this facility in Australia. The bath is a favourite for locals of a warm summer’s day and ideal for lap swimmers all year round. One of the city’s most outstanding historic landmarks is the Newcastle Ocean Baths. With its art deco architecture and picturesque views of the ocean, the bath has long been an icon of the Newcastle coastline. Adjacent to the ocean bath is Newcastle Canoe Pool, which once featured a map of the world with small islands representing the continents. The shallow canoe pool is the perfect place for young children to swim in safety away from waves and surfers. A visit to Newcastle is not complete without a day on the beach. So grab a parcel of fish and chips and join the

locals on the sand. Don’t forget to watch out for dolphins, a common sight off Newcastle’s beaches. To keep up with the weather, tides and surf check out @NDays on Twitter!

Anh Do's bestselling book The Happiest Refugee has made readers laugh and cry, and was described by Russell Crowe as “the most surprising and inspiring read I have had in years.” Anh’s new stage show takes it a step further, combining stand-up comedy with real life stories, photos and filmed pieces to retell his amazing story. When one of Australia’s most talented comedians delves deep into his own life’s joys and sorrows, the result is an unforgettable night at the theatre that leaves an audience uplifted and quite simply experiencing... happiness. “Hilarious” Sydney Morning Herald "I laughed, I cried...such an inspiring book." Later on in the month is the Heaven Can Wait Charity Sailing Regatta, with an exciting 1 Lap Dash, 12 hour race and a 24 hour race all taking place. COLLECTIVE IDENTITY(IES): THIS IS THAT TIME A project examining the phenomenon of art-collecting practice in Australia, and how we define our interests as a society. Focusing on the role played by private collectors in shaping notions of a collective cultural identity, the exhibition concentrates on artists who were practising at the time of the Australian Bicentenary in 1988; a time when complex issues were raised about Australia’s collective identity. A gallery project curated by Lisa Corsi of Artcell. This exhibition has been assisted by a Curatorial Support Initiative grant from the NSW government through Arts NSW and is managed by Museums & Galleries NSW.

Saturday 30th November We are delighted to announce a day of Schubert’s music together with fine food and wine at the historic and majestic Stanley Park estate at Fullerton Cove, just 2 hours from north Sydney, 20 minutes from Newcastle and an hour from the Hunter Valley wine country. Famous for its musical evenings when it was built c1897, Stanley Park with its 28 acres of rolling park-like grounds and uninterrupted water views will be hosting two of the finest Australian Schubertians, Geoffrey Saba and Dominic Walsh, in Schubert’s great song cycle ‘Die Winterreise’ and in a programme of some of his most extraordinary solo piano works. For further information on Dominic and

Geoffrey’s October 2012 Sydney recital received rave reviews from Peter McCallum in the Sydney Morning Herald and from Lloyd Bradford Syke in Australian Stage, who described his playing as having “...a Russian fervour mercifully devoid of faux, fey, or fay delicacy. It is unaffected: ringing with sincerity, clarity, forthrightness, candour, class and maturity...It exudes the utmost taste”. Peter McCallum wrote of his “...consummate musicianship, glowing lyrical quality, poetic sense of line, moulding the architecture of the work with focused intensity and impressive cumulative impact.”

Valley View, Cessnock

Cessnock & Kurri Kurri Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast. Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland. During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the

last twenty years. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convictbuilt Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures. Kurri Kurri is famous for its Murals, they are a wonderful expression of our history and region, and tours are available all year round, we have many coach groups coming into town to view these amazing outdoor artworks and are proud to be the biggest Mural

town in Australia. There are now over 50 murals, making Kurri Kurri the largest mural town in Australia. New murals are currently underway. Don't forget to look for the kookaburra in every mural, some are quite difficult to find. To book a tour, enquire about projects contact the Kurri Kurri VIC 4936 1909.

November at the Cessnock Regional Art Gallery

Stevie Fieldsend, Jenny Herbert-Smith, James McCallum, Flossie Peitsch, Penny Philpott and Nardja Williams are all steadily building their artistic reputations and Stevie Fieldsend has just been selected as a finalist in this year's Blake Prize. This exhibition is bound by the common theme of hunting and gathering and, even though these artists have not exhibited together before, the clarity of their vision and the quality of their work ensures that this will be an exciting and engaging show not to be missed. Visitors and residents of the Lower Hunter are very lucky to have the opportunity of seeing this exhibition at Cessnock Regional Art Gallery as Hunting and Gathering is one of very few gallery exhibitions in the state that is devoted to sculpture.

Take a step back in time to 1963 What were you doing 50 years ago – where you born then, perhaps 1963 was the year you finished school, started a new job or got married? Maitland Regional Art Gallery (MRAG) in conjunction with Maitland City Council (MCC) and supported by Maitland Mercury is proud to showcase Maitland in 1963 with an exhibition titled 50 years, Picture that in Maitland: 1963. Curated by Maitland Mercury chief photographer Cath Bowen, the exhibition features over 25 black and white images mined from the Maitland Mercury archives. Local disasters, political agendas, significant social change, fashion flares and even cutting edge popular culture are all featured in this fun and inviting exhibition. With these images we can see Maitland experienced High Street headaches, drama, political upheaval and significant social change. Bowen has assembled a series of images that allow us to peer through the rose coloured glasses of 50 years and nostalgically, or indeed critically, look at how we have grown as a community in Maitland. MRAG invites everyone to take a look; at themselves, their relatives and neighbours from 50 years ago and enjoy 50 years, Picture that in Maitland: 1963. The exhibition will be available all November with the art gallery open Tuesday – Sunday 10am – 5pm. Entry is always free and everyone is welcome.

‘Carefully cross the road to the Court House. As you cross you’ll be walking through the exact spot where the embankment broke and opened the street to the full force of the flood waters and the devastation that resulted.’ This quote is taken from Maitland historian Peter Bogan’s account of the dramatic events in Maitland in February 1955 and is featured in a new smart phone app, called Flood Walk, produced by the Hunter-Central Rivers Catchment Management Authority (CMA). The app features a walking tour Peter has led many times of Maitland’s Court House precinct, one of a series of five tours he has researched and delivered since 2009 with support from the CMA. Peter says the Maitland flood history Walk & Talk tours have been incredibly popular and he hopes the app will allow a greater number of people to experience them. ‘People can download the app and follow the tour around the streets of Maitland, look at the photos on their phone, lining up the old with the new, and hear stories of events that took place in the very spot they’re standing. It’s a very powerful thing to experience,’ says Peter The tour starts on the Hunter River on the Riverside Walkway at the end of St Andrews Street, just a block downstream from the Belmore Bridge, and finishes up at the Court House. Peter’s narration includes his own personal experience of the events of the 1955 and 1949 floods. So many people are fascinated by the dramatic floods that have characterised Maitland’s history. The revisiting and retelling of these events shines a light on the resilience of the people of Maitland and the way they come together to support one another through a crisis. The human stories featured in the Flood Walk app make these events real for us today and also offer a warning of things to come. There’s a very good chance that a flood the scale of the one that occurred in 1955 could occur again in Maitland. The message this app aims to get across is that we need to be prepared when it does. The Flood Walk app is being officially launched in Maitland on 22 August 2013. Search for ‘Flood Walk’ on the Apple App Store, for iOS devices, such as Apple iPods, iPhones and iPads, or from Google Play for Android devices.

Morpeth Morpeth is an area of outstanding natural beauty and offers a great experience for everyone who enjoys the pleasure of a walk in a country village with the opportunity of shopping and dining in unique style. It's a little place not far from Maitland, with a history to make us all proud. Morpeth was once upon a time a busy river port and frontier town established during the late 1820's. The Heritage buildings and Bond Stores stand in testament indeed, Morpeth was the largest inland seaport of the new Australian colony and commercial icons Brambles, Simsmetal, Arnotts and Soul's Pharmacy were born in this magnificent place. Set along the banks of the Hunter River, the drive to Morpeth is an added attraction. The green fields stretch for miles and the weeping willows sway in the breeze. It is very hard to find a place to match our beautiful Morpeth. As you stroll through the cobblestoned village you will notice that Morpeth has everything from art galleries to specialty shops to a Trading Post and even a Bazaar. Where else can you get that much fun and entertainment for such a small cost, and better still the Muswellbrook PCYC collect the money on the gate to assist with their many community assistance programs.
