Hunter Region Markets

Where inspiration beams, the community shines and the trees are more than what they appear to be. Sacred Tree Markets is a unique culmination from a talented Energetic Healer/Teacher and a well respected member of the local wine industry. Both passionate about the Hunter Valley, good food, great times, happy kids, beautiful things and seeing people shine in their element. After countless hours traveling outside of their local community to visit numerous markets, sisters-in-law Penny Nowland and Ganga Ma, felt a desire to pull together their passion for the boutique, artisan and eclectic with their love of great food, wine, fresh produce and to see it being “home grown” in their local area. www.sacredtreemarkets.com.au

Garlic hates weeds! Garlic that is in the ground should be growing nicely now, but weeds will also be growing and that might cause unwanted competition. Like most things in life, competition for precious resources often means a winner and a loser. As spring is now upon us, the competition between garlic and weeds is rising rapidly. If you’re growing garlic, it’s a very good idea to keep those weeds out. The best way to do this is to lay a weed mat when you first plant your garlic. But be sure to use a good weed mat that allows the rain to seep through and the soil to breath. Avoid using that black builder’s type plastic or your soil will suffer over time. If you haven’t used weed mat, then it’s best to dig those weeds out now, before they grow too big. It’s a time consuming job, but worth it in the end. Your garlic will love you for it and reward you with bigger, more flavoursome bulbs. For more info, recipes or to contact us, please visit: www.huntervalleygarlic.com.au

Gourmet or Glutton Cheeses

Fun with Wine

Jurassic is a hard cheese made from aromatic Jura Mountains cow's milk, it is basically a small comte. The best of the Jurassic range is the Jurassic D’ete which is aged at least 10 but up to 18 months. Produced in a small mountain dairy in France, maturing in rock cellars where the rind is regularly washed. It has a tangy, fruity flavour and a smooth paste. Crozier Blue another fantastic Irish cheese from the people who bought us Cashel Blue. Very similar in texture and appearance but the Crozier steps in up a notch in the intensity department, just divine on a slice of crisp apple! And finally, after sooo many requests, Pont l’Eveque Crozier Blue has finally made it to the Gourmet or Glutton shelves. Pont l’Eveque is one of the most famous (and oldest) cheeses to come out of France, given it dates back to the 13th century they’ve had plenty of time to perfect this recipe. Not overly stinky for a washed rind, but the flavour is super delicate yet still rich, savoury and meaty, the texture thick and fudgy. These cheeses can be purchased at Gourmet or Glutton in Morpeth. See their ad on page 41. Visit Shop 2, 129 Swan St
Morpeth. Ph 02 4933 5233 www.gourmetorglutton.com.au

Well spring is certainly here and we now have the vines budding and romance in the air and what better time of the year to enjoy great sparkling. The Hunter Valley has some gorgeous sparkling wines. A visit to Petersons Champagne house is a must, try one of their excellent traditional method sparkling with oysters or a number of other sparkling varieties. A trip to Petersons is a must this time of year. All can be enjoyed sitting on the deck looking across the lake, a truly pleasant experience. For the romantics perhaps you should propose to your partner sitting in a vineyard with the smelly cheese factory offerings and a great sparkling. With summer coming investigating the terrific Pinot Grigio, Verdelho and Semillon of the Hunter is perfect. If you take a leisurely afternoon through some of the Boutique wineries you will find really interesting whites and even some Sangiovese and Temperanillo which are lighter Italian and Spanish reds and go really well at room temperature or lightly chilled for that summer BBQ. “Drink Champagne when you are happy, Champagne when you are sad and Champagne to celebrate life and your friends to celebrate your death”

PET FRIENDLY

Classical and seasonal desserts paired with wines and ports from the Hunter region. Multi-award winning desserts, cakes & pastries, hand-made chocolates and gourmet ice cream. We also have a Gluten free range, barista made coffee and teas to take away or enjoy on our informal alfresco patio. Their tasting room is in the old milking shed from the days (not so long ago) that the farm was an operating dairy. The dairy cows have gone and shed is now cleaned up and is used for tastings, giving you spectacular views of the mountains across the vineyard and Wollombi Brook. The vineyard is right outside the door – all their wine grapes are grown on the property – with a string of awards from some of the toughest wine shows in the country. can use depending on the type of lawn you have. Scott’s Lawn Builder, Sir Walter Fertilizer, or Dynamic Lifter for Lawns will all give your lawn a boost for the summer. Speak to a lawn expert at Lee Rowan’s to see which one is the best for your lawn type. • Lee Rowan’s Rich Mulch is the perfect blend of organic matter to protect your plants through the summer months ahead. Top up your mulch levels as it will help retain the moisture your plants need in the heat. • Plant some natives while they are flowering. Be careful where you plant your natives as they may require less water than the rest of your garden and are sensitive to some fertilizers. Ask one of the friendly staff at Gardenworld what you need to do to prepare the soil in your garden for native plant species. • Plant herbs, especially basil, which grows well with your tomato plants. Newcastle Newcastle is a vibrant cosmopolitan city which has everything from world-class surfing beaches, to the emerging food scene, Newcastle has it all. Explore and uncover the flavour and allure of the city’s streetscapes and waterfronts – each with its own feel and character. Five of the city’s pristine beaches are on the eastern side of the promontory. These include; Nobby’s Beach, Newcastle Beach, Bar Beach, Dixon Park Beach and Merewether Beach where there are swimming clubs, kite surfing, rock pools and baths, watching

The Café culture is emerging with the most popular food areas in Darby Street in Cooks Hill; The Harbour waterfronts including Honeysuckle, Beaumont Street in Hamilton and The Junction. Newcastle is a city that embraces and nurtures creativity, and holds local arts practitioners in high esteem. Newcastle is host to a colourful and expansive array of art galleries, including the Newcastle Region Art Gallery, one of Australia’s leading

regional galleries. Much creative talent has originated in the city including the world-renowned band, Silverchair. Newcastle Beaches Newcastle is well-known for its stunning coastline and it is one of the few cities in the world that can say it has eight beaches within five minutes of its city centre. Nobbys, Newcastle, Bar, Dixon Park and Merewether Beach, just to name a few, are attractive must-see locations for any visitor to the city. June 2007 storms thrust Nobbys Beach into the International spotlight after the grounding of the massive Pasha Bulker cargo ship on its shores. A monument to the event stands at Nobbys Beach and is a stop off point for visitors and locals alike. Nearby is the Harbour break-wall and Nobby’s Lighthouse, perfect for that afternoon stroll and the ideal vantage point to watch 300m cargo ships come into port. Newcastle Beach is known for being one of the best surf locations in Australia along with Merewether

Beach, home to the annual International Surfest competition. Adjacent are the Merewether Baths, the largest ocean bath complex in the Southern Hemisphere – there is nothing else like this facility in Australia. The bath is a favourite for locals of a warm summer’s day and ideal for lap swimmers all year round. One of the city’s most outstanding historic landmarks is the Newcastle Ocean Baths. With its art deco architecture and picturesque views of the ocean, the bath has long been an icon of the Newcastle coastline. Adjacent to the ocean bath is Newcastle Canoe Pool, which once featured a map of the world with small islands representing the continents. The shallow canoe pool is the perfect place for young children to swim in safety away from waves and surfers.

A visit to Newcastle is not complete without a day on the beach. So grab a parcel of fish and chips and join the locals on the sand. Don’t forget to watch out for dolphins, a common sight off Newcastle’s beaches. To keep up with the weather, tides and surf check out @NDays on Twitter!

Australia’s most inspirational sporting event, the Australian Transplant Games, is held every two years. The Games provide living proof of the success of transplantation and encourage all Australians to discuss organ and tissue donation with their families. The 13th Australian Transplant Games will be held in Newcastle, NSW, from September 29 through to October 6, 2012. The Games will bring up to 1,000 competitors and their families from all across Australia and various other countries together in Newcastle to celebrate their renewed life. For many people, competing in the Transplant Games provides an added incentive to regain health and fitness following a successful transplantation and are an important step on the path to returning to a normal life. Others use the Games as an opportunity to meet and socialise with fellow transplant recipients. For all competitors however, the Games are an opportunity to demonstrate how they are living life to the fullest following their recovery. The Games bring competitors of all ages, historically from around 3-75 years of age, together to compete in a multitude of sports and activities ranging from chess, Scrabble and lawn bowls up to higher end sports such as swimming, athletics, squash, tennis, basketball and many more.

An Absolute Turkey by Georges Feydeau Adapted from Le Dindon and translated by Nicki Frei & Peter Hall. Directed by John McFadden Georges Feydeau, the master of French farce, lived from 1862 to 1921 and wrote a succession of popular 'boulevard' plays in late 19thC to early 20thC. The title suggests the 'turkey' as the 'fall guy'. The style is meant to entertain with a wild, comic energy verging on the surreal. The subject of his material is sexual attraction and lust and the insanities that these ingredients produce. An Absolute Turkey is regarded as the most elegantly complex of Feydeau’s plays and provides true escapist pleasure. Everything plays out at double speed spinning to a surrealistic climax of complications and demonstrating the hypocrisy of human behaviour, leaving the audience with delicious schadenfreude moments that make one squirm at the misfortune of others. No one will ever feel sorry for the characters as they thrash about, caught in a nightmare of entanglements, a group of aspirant adulterers, rampant egotists and females bent on revenge all converging on room 39 in Hotel Terminus. Playing at Newcastle Theatre Company, 90 de Vitre Street, Lambton from Saturday 17 November through to 1 December. Call Viv between 3-6pm for bookings on 02 4952 4958. Concessions and Generous Group Bookings are available. Newcastle Repertory Club Inc. T/A

An Interview with Cveta Jovanoska Creator & Director of YOGA loft 1. What motivates and inspires you? Faith keeps me inspired and motivated. An unbreakable faith that I am on my life 'path' and living my dreams is what keeps me going. 2. How do you find time for private practice when you are so busy with the Yoga Loft? It's really about the 'quality' of my practice. I make sure I can get time and space on my mat every single day, no matter the length of time. Being present in the moment is key. 3. What's next on the horizon for you? There are so many things on my bucket list, both professionally and personally, it's just a matter of prioritising! We have amazing plans to expand the YOGA loft, its growth has been so rapid, so stay tuned! I'm always expanding and growing in all areas of my personal life. 4. What does it mean to you to be a Novacastrian? Now that I'm 'home', after 15 years, I can just blend in and I love that. Novocastrians are a breed of their own and I'm so proud to be one! 5. What do you love most about Newcastle? Newcastle has gorgeous beaches, spectacular ocean baths, a chilled-out vibe with super- friendly people and everything is so accessible. Rather than a city, it feels like I'm in a big village. I've lived in Europe, Ibiza, travelled all over the States, especially New York and San Francisco. To me Newcastle is the best of both these great cities - people, beaches, restaurants, parks, shops, and the best yoga studio in the world! 6. Do you have a favourite place to eat, a favourite watering hole or place to just hang out? Since I've only just come back I'm still finding my food haven... but I love organic, healthy food. For coffee: 2300, the new Cafe Mason across the road and Good Brother are my top 3. I've lived so close to Catherine Hill Bay, so I love going there and swimming in the shark hole. My secret haven is this little park bench at the top of Caves Beach overlooking the ocean, since I was a teenager I'd sit there, meditate, breathe and just listen to the ocean. It's real magic.

Hunter Valley hosts its first big balloon fiesta Australia’s most established hot air balloon business, Balloon Aloft, will once again host a colourful big balloon bonanza in the Hunter Valley! Over 15 hot air balloonists will to take to the skies in a glorious display of camaraderie and colour on the October long weekend (Sunday 30th September and Monday 1 October) Enthusiasts and lovers of this thrilling sport will see this event as a ‘must do’ and are encouraged to book early and take part in this special Hunter Valley event. As it is a long weekend bookings are at a premium - for accommodation and as passengers on the balloons. Organiser, Matthew Scaife of Balloon Aloft, said the company had been disappointed that weather prevented a major event of 30 balloons last year to celebrate the company’s 30 years of flight. He has just returned from a successful competition in the USA and loved the camaraderie of many balloons enjoying the one event. Pilots and passengers of the Balloon Aloft Hunter Valley Fiesta will enjoy a special breakfast at Peterson’s Champagne House after the flight. Anyone who loves the thrill of flight already knows that gliding over vineyards and native bush at this height is a special memory. Award winning Balloon Aloft has provided this experience for thousands of travellers. Ask about balloons sizes for your group, large or small. They can carry between two and 16 passengers, and are flown by experienced pilots. Pricing and bookings are all on Balloon Aloft’s website www.balloonaloft.com

Broke Fordwich will host its 10th annual Spirit of the Vine festival on the weekend of 20th and 21st October 2012. The festival celebrates a proud Hunter Valley heritage, a strong community spirit and a deep connection with the land. Only 10 minutes from Pokolbin, yet a world away from the bustle of the Hunter Valley’s busy wine hub, the region of Broke Fordwich is usually known as the ‘Tranquil Side of the Hunter Valley’. But the region boasts a yearly program of festivals to put a spring into the step of any wine tourist. A Spirit of Place Spirit of the Vine celebrates the unique beauty of the Broke Fordwich region. Stunning scenery is a feature of every venue, with views of rolling pasture juxtaposed against the imposing rock features of the Brokenback range. The first recognized viticultural subregion of the Hunter Valley, Broke Fordwich has distinct climatic differences from the rest of the Lower Hunter, with cooler nights and lower rainfall offering excellent conditions for quality grape production. The area boasts several organic and biodynamic growers, including the largest organic vineyard in the Hunter Valley. A Spirit of Adventure Since the earliest roads to the Hunter were forged through Broke Fordwich, the area has been home to a great pioneering spirit. Today’s wine producers are experimenting with new varietals – from meditteranean staples such as Barbera, Sangiovese and Tempranillo to more obscure varieties such as Tannat, Lagrein and Touriga Nacional. Of course the classic varieties of the Hunter Valley are also well represented with some of the region’s (and indeed the world’s) oldest Shiraz vineyards a feature of the area. A Spirit of Community With just 12 cellar doors, the Broke Fordwich region is a close-knit wine community. Many of the cellar doors are owner operated and you may well find yourself talking to the producers themselves. They will regale you with the many stories and secrets of the region - some of them even true.

Kurri Kurri Mural - 'Bullocky'

Cessnock & Kurri Kurri Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast. Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland. During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the

last twenty years. Consequently many areas have undergone a change in character, with rural residential housing development and weekend retreats becoming popular. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convictbuilt Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures.

intense observation of her immediate environment, from the coastal fringe near her home at Pearl Beach, the Hawkesbury River and central Australia to the countryside of Italy, Spain and France. The central focus of her work is the role of nature and humankind's position in it, with mood and atmosphere are created through an interplay of light and shadow, tone and colour. Roadways twist and taper off into an unknown future where rooftops and buildings impose themselves upon rural backgrounds at differing stages of domestication. This is a substantial exhibition of over sixty works, ranging in size from classical miniatures to substantial large canvases.

Balance?

A new exhibition at Maitland Regional Art Gallery Until 4 November In an economic climate driven by mining, can there be a balance between industry and rural life? In an art exhibition on show at Maitland Regional Art Gallery until 4 November two collaborating artists from Murrurundi in the Upper Hunter, Fran Wachtel and Charlotte Drake Brockman, ask this question of us in Balance? Wachtel and Drake Brockman have worked together in the Upper Hunter collaborating on special commissions, exhibitions and creating a commercial range of metal farm animals. This exhibition features a new direction in both scale and imagination and comments not only on the balance of two artists and their ongoing successful working relationship but also the precarious balance of the fragile country environment and heavy mining – prominent partners in the upper hunter. Maitland Regional Art Gallery (MRAG) has opened its doors to this duo to create an exhibition of new works for us in the Lower Hunter. For this we thank them because it is not often that they leave their shed and take the opportunity to work and display such a large a format. Balance? will prove to be an exhibition which will delight, entertain and educate. We encourage you all to come and enjoy.

Morpeth Morpeth is an area of outstanding natural beauty and offers a great experience for everyone who enjoys the pleasure of a walk in a country village with the opportunity of shopping and dining in unique style. It's a little place not far from Maitland, with a history to make us all proud. Morpeth was once upon a time a busy river port and frontier town established during the late 1820's. The Heritage buildings and Bond Stores stand in testament indeed, Morpeth was the largest inland seaport of the new Australian colony and commercial icons Brambles, Simsmetal, Arnotts and Soul's Pharmacy were born in this magnificent place. Set along the banks of the Hunter River, the drive to Morpeth is an added attraction. The green fields stretch for miles and the weeping willows sway in the breeze. It is very hard to find a place to match our beautiful Morpeth. As you stroll through the cobblestoned village you will notice that Morpeth has everything from art galleries to specialty shops to a Trading Post and even a Bazaar. Local artisans and craftspeople have their wares for sale throughout the town. You will have the opportunity to taste locally made fudge and sip ginger beer. Fine fashion, teddy bears, art and craft, tempting treats to take home, beautiful jewellery, home furnishings and objects of interest, we promise that you will find them in Morpeth. A range of restaurants and cafes offer al fresco dining, river views, heritage surroundings and a cosmopolitan

www.hunterimag.com.au

standard of menu. Grab a bottle of the finest wine available for tasting from the local wine cellar then select your café, even the most finicky of foodies will find something to their liking. Morpeth does have its own museum, a service that traces family names and shields, St Johns Theological college and is home to the beautiful St James church to name but a few of the significant buildings throughout the town. Just down the road a way is a structure of a different nature. The infamous Maitland Gaol is now open to the public, experience what it's like to walk in the footsteps of some of Australia's most notorious criminals. Morpeth, the town, the heritage, the buildings and carriage ways make this a place to not only visit but make a regular event.

What to See & Do ■ Morpeth is National Trust classified, so take one of the Heritage Walks enjoy the colorful history of Morpeth and its characters - in a living museum of Australia’s past. ■ The streets of Morpeth are home to over 40 specialty shops and boutiques. Browse the gift shops, antique shops, galleries, lolly shops, a tea house, ginger beer factory and bakery. ■ Visit the Morpeth Museum housed in the old Court House built in 1862.

The Allyn & Paterson River Valley Tocal - Paterson - Vacy - East Gresford - Gresford There is a lot on offer for visitors to the Allyn & Paterson River Valley, just two and a half hours’ drive from Sydney, an hour from Newcastle and where Dr Henry Lindeman planted his first grape vines in 1843. Here you will discover the geographically blessed towns of Paterson, Vacy, Gresford and East Gresford, ringed by the ancient Moonabung Ranges and criss-crossed by the pristine waters of the two rivers that flow from the Barrington Tops. First stop could be historic Tocal Homestead for tales of the olden days of bushrangers, graziers, and other characters who inhabited one of the greatest Australian cattle and horse studs of its time. Have a look at the rare architect-designed barn built around 1867, and the gracious Colonial Georgian country house. Tocal Homestead is a very popular venue for

weddings and milestone celebrations. Paterson has inspired many artists to pick up a brush to try to capture this picturesque Australian country town on canvas. Take the time to look at the many fine old homes, grand commercial buildings, museums, art gallery, pubs, cafes, parks and shops that contribute to Paterson’s unique style. 9km north of Paterson is Vacy, with rugged Mt George to the west. It is well worth a visit to the café, hotel, arts & crafts shop and general store for a taste of country hospitality, great food and quirky crafts. Travel over the Vacy bridge, circa 1898, to Bunna Bunoo olive grove and gift shop. You can see the roof tops of the cabins and lodges such as Banjos Bushland Retreat and Cabins in the Clouds on Mt George, perfect destinations for weekend getaways or a longer stay.

The small towns of Gresford and East Gresford are the gateway to Lostock Dam, Mt Allyn and the Chichester State Forest to the north. Take the Allyn River Road drive past homesteads set among rolling green hills and granite outcrops. Visit Clevedon craft shop, Natural Furniture Works, the Beatty Hotel and Camyr Allyn winery. History lovers will enjoy a drive to St Anne’s Anglican Church and suspension bridge, and St Mary’s on Allyn at Allynbrook. New Visitor Entry at Tocal Homestead The Homestead’s old dairy building has been adapted as a reception centre to welcome day visitors. The refurbished building provides visitors with information on the Tocal heritage site, book and merchandise sales, refreshment facilities and local tourist information. The Homestead’s former dairy was stabilised and conserved some years ago. It is a unique building to the area as it is built on bed logs rather than posts into the ground. ‘The milk room of the building has been converted to an Office/Reception

Centre for day visitors. It will be staffed on weekends and at other times when visitors come to the site. The adjacent stock yards have been converted into a car park to service the visitors and a dedicated path through the stock yards takes visitors to the Homestead.

Open every weekend from March to Nov 30th 10am – 3pm. When you visit Tocal Homestead its not hard to imagine days gone by. Tales of architects and graziers, bushrangers, businessmen, social reform and philanthropy are woven through the highs and lows of life on this unique property.
