Newcastle Beaches Newcastle is well-known for its stunning coastline and it is one of the few cities in the world that can say it has eight beaches within five minutes of its city centre. Nobbys, Newcastle, Bar, Dixon Park and Merewether Beach,. Newcastle Beach is known for being one of the best surf locations in Australia. Adjacent are the Merewether Baths, the largest ocean bath complex in the Southern Hemisphere. The bath is a
favourite for locals of a warm summer’s day and ideal for lap swimmers all year round. One of the city’s most outstanding historic landmarks is the Newcastle Ocean Baths. With its art deco architecture The shallow canoe pool is the perfect place for young children to swim in safety away from waves and surfers. A visit to Newcastle is not complete without a day on the
beach. So grab a parcel of fish and chips and join the locals on the sand. Don’t forget to watch out for dolphins, a common sight off Newcastle’s beaches. To keep up with the weather, tides and surf check out @NDays on Twitter!

Big names in running event The 2013 Fernleigh15 is set to smash the attendance record of last year’s event. The 2013 Event will also act as the NSW State 15K Road Championships. A host of elite runners and wheelchair athletes, including Kurt Fearnley, will take part, alongside hundreds of recreational runners and walkers. Expected to attract some of the biggest names in distance running in Australia. As a state 15K road championship, expect to see some top racing at the pointy end. It’s a unique opportunity for wheelchair athletes. The Fernleigh 15 is currently the region’s only competitive wheelchair athletics road event. Headlined by four-time Paralympian Kurt Fearnley, who won the race last year. Following on from his win at the London Marathon earlier this year, Kurt is set to compete in both the Chicago & New York Marathons, between which he will return home to Newcastle to take part in the Fernleigh15. Kurt is very excited at the prospect of returning to the event held on his namesake track which has been instrumental to his success as an athlete. “I think every time its (the Fernleigh Track) been extended, my lifespan as an athlete has been extended as well." he said. The race organisers are expecting large numbers of recreational runners/ walkers led by women-only running group, The Night Striders (expecting over 100 members to take part). Athletics NSW & H Events are pleased to announce the addition of new major sponsor, Westfield Kotara, for this year’s event on Sunday 20th October. I am a Camera at Newcastle Theatre Company
ELICOS
It is 1930, the Nazi Party is on the rise. Political and civil unrest is stirring in pre-war Berlin. Behind the shutters of his rented Berlin apartment, a fledgling author is uninvolved, simply observing, almost like a camera. When a strange and exciting young woman arrives he is swept away from the realities of life. The two seek to experience the height of sophistication at the same time as being challenged by the moral complexities of life. This play by John Van Druten is based on the works of renowned author Christopher Isherwood’s, The Berlin Stories, set in early 1930s Berlin. These works were the inspiration for the stage musical and the film Cabaret which won eight Academy Awards. Sam DeLyall as Christopher Isherwood and introducing Brittney Angus as Sally Bowles, lead an exceptional cast with NTC newcomers Ellen McNeil and Lindsay McDonald supported by Judith Schofield, David Murray and Tracey Gordon. I Am a Camera, directed by Kelsie Clarke, will leave you captivated by the authenticity and sincerity of the production. This October, come and experience the excitement of pre-war Berlin, before the historical chill engulfs this vibrant set of characters, on the eve of a real world cataclysm.

A project examining the phenomenon of art-collecting practice in Australia, and how we define our interests as a society. Focusing on the role played by private collectors in shaping notions of a collective cultural identity, the exhibition concentrates on artists who were practising at the time of the Australian Bicentenary in 1988; a time when complex issues were raised about Australia’s collective identity. A gallery project curated by Lisa Corsi of Artcell. This exhibition has been assisted by a Curatorial Support Initiative grant from the NSW government through Arts NSW and is managed by Museums & Galleries NSW.

Valley View, Cessnock
Cessnock & Kurri Kurri Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast. Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland.

During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the last twenty years. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing
tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convictbuilt Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures. Kurri Kurri is famous for its Murals, they are a wonderful expression of our history and region, and tours are available all year round, we have many coach groups coming into town to view these amazing outdoor artworks and are proud to be the biggest Mural town in Australia. There are now over 50 murals, making Kurri Kurri the largest mural town in Australia. New murals are currently underway. Don't forget to look for the kookaburra in every mural, some are quite difficult to find. To book a tour, enquire about projects contact the Kurri Kurri VIC 4936 1909.
New Exhibition is a Knockout During October, Cessnock Regional Art Gallery presents Knockout, a photodocumentary explores grassroots Aboriginal rugby league in NSW. Photographer Amanda James first attended Aboriginal Rugby League Knockout Carnival at Nambucca Heads in 1986. The carnival, now in its 4th decade, gathers men, women and children from over 60 different language groups to take part. Initially established as recognition of Aboriginal sportsmanship, over the decades the carnival had became an
important way to unify people within the communities. Knockout captures a “behind the scenes” view of community living and active lifestyle, uniting generations and inspiring younger generations to participate in sports and be an active part of the community. The exhibition runs at Cessnock Regional Art Gallery until 27th October. Entry is free.

Taking Maitland’s flood history into the future ‘Carefully cross the road to the Court House. As you cross you’ll be walking through the exact spot where the embankment broke and opened the street to the full force of the flood waters and the devastation that resulted.’ This quote is taken from Maitland historian Peter Bogan’s account of the dramatic events in Maitland in February 1955 and is featured in a new smart phone app, called Flood Walk, produced by the Hunter-Central Rivers Catchment Management Authority (CMA). The app features a walking tour Peter has led many times of Maitland’s Court House precinct, one of a series of five tours he has researched and delivered since 2009 with support from the CMA. Peter says the Maitland flood history Walk & Talk tours have been incredibly popular and he hopes the app will allow a greater number of people to experience them. ‘People can download the app and follow the tour around the streets of Maitland, look at the photos on their phone, lining up the old with the new, and hear stories of events that took place in the very spot they’re standing. It’s a very powerful thing to experience,’ says Peter The tour starts on the Hunter River on the Riverside Walkway at the end of St Andrews Street, just a block downstream from the Belmore Bridge, and finishes up at the Court House. Peter’s narration includes his own personal experience of the events of the 1955 and 1949 floods. So many people are fascinated by the dramatic floods that have characterised Maitland’s history. The revisiting and retelling of these events shines a light on the resilience of the people of Maitland and the way they come together to support one another through a crisis. The human stories featured in the Flood Walk app make these events real for us today and also offer a warning of things to come. There’s a very good chance that a flood the scale of the one that occurred in 1955 could occur again in Maitland. The message this app aims to get across is that we need to be prepared when it does. The Flood Walk app is being officially launched in Maitland on 22 August 2013. Search for ‘Flood Walk’ on the Apple App Store, for iOS devices, such as Apple iPods, iPhones and iPads, or from Google Play for Android devices.

Morpeth Morpeth is an area of outstanding natural beauty and offers a great experience for everyone who enjoys the pleasure of a walk in a country village with the opportunity of shopping and dining in unique style. It's a little place not far from Maitland, with a history to make us all proud. Morpeth was once upon a time a busy river port and frontier town established during the late 1820's. The Heritage buildings and Bond Stores stand in testament indeed, Morpeth was the largest inland seaport of the new Australian colony and commercial icons Brambles, Simsmetal, Arnotts and Soul's Pharmacy were born in this magnificent place. Set along the banks of the Hunter River, the drive to Morpeth is an added attraction. The green fields stretch for miles and the weeping willows sway in the breeze. It is very hard to find a place to match our beautiful Morpeth. As you stroll through the cobblestoned village you will notice that Morpeth has everything from art galleries to specialty shops to a Trading Post and even a Bazaar. Local artisans and Morpeth Museum

Morpeth does have its own museum, a service that traces family names and shields, St Johns Theological college and is home to the beautiful St James church to name but a few of the significant buildings throughout the town. vines in 1843. Here you will discover the geographically blessed towns of Paterson, Vacy, Gresford and East Gresford, ringed by the ancient Moonabung Ranges and criss-crossed by the pristine waters of the two rivers that flow from the Barrington Tops. First stop could be historic Tocal Homestead for tales of the olden days of bushrangers, graziers, and other characters who inhabited one of the greatest Australian cattle and horse studs of its time. Have a look at the rare architect-designed barn built around 1867, and the gracious Colonial Georgian country house. Tocal Homestead is a very popular venue for weddings and milestone celebrations. Paterson has inspired many artists to pick up a brush to try to capture this picturesque Australian country town on canvas. Take the time to look at the many fine old homes, grand commercial buildings, museums, art gallery, pubs, cafes, parks and shops that contribute to Paterson’s unique style. 9km north of Paterson is Vacy, with rugged Mt George to the west. It is well worth a visit to the café, hotel, arts & crafts shop and general store for a taste of country hospitality, great food and quirky crafts. Travel over the Vacy bridge, circa 1898, to Bunna Bunoo olive grove and gift shop. You can see the roof tops of the cabins and lodges such as Banjos Bushland Retreat and Cabins in the Clouds on Mt George, perfect destinations for weekend getaways or a longer stay.
