From the Editor May Welcome to the Coast in May! May is a very special time of year for not only is it Mother’s Day it is my Mothers anniversary of her departure, now 9 years. Much loved and very much missed. Our favourite thing to do was to explore the beauty that is The Central Coast. We just got in the car and drove. It matters not where to because wherever you go there is something special to see. The Ken Duncan Gallery is always a favourite because I love going through the Gallery (I now have 4 Ken Duncan’s) and I love to eat and enjoy a good coffee at The Sanctuary Cafe. This is perfect for a Mother’s Day visit. If you go to pages 28 & 29 we introduce you to some of the best Coffee on the Coast and of course they also serve good quality Tea and food.

If the Country is not your thing than a visit to our beautiful beaches may just be the place to go. The Italian Restaurant is right on the water at The Entrance and the food is just superb. Why not wander over to Licks for some delicious ice cream and an excellent Morgans Coffee. Another favourite is The Austrian Schnitzelhaus see their special offers on page 2. This month’s imag has so much for you to do to make any day of the week special. So enjoy reading our May issue, take a pen or marker and start planning your month of May. A big hug for all the Mums and have a very HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY.
The trees are starting to change colour so a drive to The Yarramalong Valley through Wyong is also very pleasant. Again good coffee and meals are to be had here too, plus a walk through the beautiful gardens or a picnic? Call in to the Little Creek Cheese Factory and pick up a picnic pack. See pages 10 & 11.

“Wheely” good times in May! Getting out and about on the Central Coast is a favourite pastime for many – and this May is all about wheels – two or four! For serious two-wheel competitors, Sunday May 20 sees the Century Challenge Cycle Ride. Organised by the Rotary Club of Erina, this annual event sees participants take a 50 or 100km ride, beginning from Mt Penang Parklands at Kariong. The courses take in the breathtaking scenery of the Somersby, Peats Ridge and Calga areas. Those looking for a more casual riding experience, any day in May is a great time to cycle, with the cool crisp air providing ideal conditions. Both Brisbane Water and Tuggerah Lakes are perfect locations for waterfront rides on dedicated bike paths. Breathtaking views await! Four-wheeling demonstrations of the go-karting kind will be just one of the attractions of the much-loved annual Gosford Regional Show. Held on May 5th and 6th at Gosford Showground, there’s something for the whole family, including the crowning of the Gosford Showgirl!
Car enthusiasts will love The Entrance in May – the Central Coast Heritage Car Club and All American Muscle Car shows take place on Sunday 20 and 27 May respectively, bringing colour and style to the stunning Memorial Park foreshore. The park will also host the inaugural Central Coast Ukelele Festival on Saturday May 26 – one not to miss!
If you prefer feet over wheels, Australian international football star Tim Cahill is hosting clinics on the weekend of 18th to 20th May in Gosford.

Seacoast Fishing What's happening this month... Buy the freshest seafood on the Coast. Our commercial fishing business has been operating from Kincumber for the past 8 years and we have the freshest fish in town. Straight from the boat to our shop, which is located 400mtrs from the scenic road roundabout towards Macmasters Beach. Our catch consists of Snapper, Ocean Jackets, Bream trevally, mullet (which is the catch of the month!) and Lobsters. We also have local Oysters, school prawns and a variety of frozen products. As our weather cools and the westly winds start, mullet season begins for us April and May, this happens each year when the mullet schools up in big patches coming out of our estuaries and they travel to the sea, this is where our licensed boys use the hauling nets to catch some, most of the mullet schools head straight out to sea, but some travel along the coastline for a while, these are the fish the boys try to catch. Mullet has the best omega 3 oil content, which is so good for us, flavour is strong, but a great fish to eat (our favourite). Fresh is Best! We are open thurs, fridays 12.30 to 6.00pm and saturday 9 to 6.00pm. Please call us anytime for updated catch info on : 43686160 Patanga Street, Kincumber

This sublime transcendental music from India is one of the oldest musical systems in the world and it is a very rare opportunity to hear it with two master musicians. Vinod Prassana on the Bansuri and Bobby Singh on the Tabla. These two musicians belong to musical lineages that go back hundreds of years and both of these musicians perform regularly in India and have recently returned from tours around the world.
Vinod Prassana has been trained from a very young age by his uncle one of the eminent masters of Indian music Pandit Rajendra Prassana in Benares India.Vinod is now residing in Australia and has added his beautiful sound to not only pure classical Indian music but also to various fusion projects. Bobby Singh is a disciple of the great tabla master Aneesh Pradhan and has been training with him
for over 20 years in Mumbai.Bobby has leant his sound to many projects in Australia and has won an ARIA award with his band Djan Djan. Did you know that Little Creek Cheese located in Wyong doesn’t only make cheese? Yoghurt is also handmade almost daily at Little Creek Cheese. Did you also know that the Old Wyong Milk Factory was the first commercial Dairy to produce yoghurt for sale back in 1963? Therefore when the landlord suggested it would be nice to bring a piece of heritage back to the Old Dairy, we took it on board and started making our beautiful smooth yoghurt. Our yoghurt is available in either Natural or in flavours –mango and passionfruit, mixed berry, toffee and Chocolate. These are available in two sizes 250g and 900g. Our yoghurts are packed in temper evident containers. Our Natural yoghurt is Gluten free with no added sugar or preservatives, no artificial flavours or colours, just good old Milk and culture. Our flavoured yoghurts have no artificial colours or flavours and are gluten free; the fruit flavoured ones have no preservatives added. Drop in and pick one up for a quick snack or take one home for the family. You can also try out our natural yoghurt in our shop before you purchase as well as try our delicious range of cheeses. www.centralcoastimag.com.au

Our History Wyong Museum & Historical Society Some snippets from history – gleaned from various newspapers over the years... This month I’m taking you back to 1887 - 125 years ago – when the written English word, in Australia, was rich in vocabulary and Editorials in country newspapers were eagerly awaited by their readers, to see who or what was being hauled over the coals or had become the butt of the Editor’s sharp sense of wry humour. A far cry from today, alas, when newspapers in country towns merely report what is going on in the town that week, and Editors have become toothless tigers. 23.7.1887 The latter half of the nineteenth century has produced many notable men, but none more remarkable than the adventurous Welsh journalist whose untimely fate in the heart of the Dark Continent is notified in our telegraphic news. Stanley’s remarkable expedition in search of the lost missionary explorer, Livingstone, stamped him as a born leader of men, and no one was surprised when he was selected to found a new State on the banks of the Congo River. Probably his mission was a quixotic one, but men like Stanley “leave footprints on the sands of time”. The project, in the carrying out of which he met his untimely fate, resembled in many respects those of Cortez and Pizzaro in Mexico and Peru, and there is no doubt but that, had he not fallen, he would have founded a unique and civilized state in the midst of a barbaric people.

The Typewriter Amongst the old typewriters we have in BWHS Historical Museum is a Standard Folding Corona portable typewriter in its own case. It was one of the most successful machines in typewriter history and dates from about 1908. The journalist, Reg Nott, who owned it, wrote in the lid the papers he had worked on - Melbourne Argus, Hobart Mercury, and Sydney Morning Herald. What incredible stories this little typewriter could tell and no doubt did.

Central Coast Chorale presents
Aspects of Love All you need is love or at least that’s what the Beatles claim! Love comes in many guises and in a myriad of forms. It could be of a two-legged or a fourlegged variety, it might be of a country or a place, even God is a possibility or it could be something that excites your taste-buds. There are many aspects of love which the Chorale will be exploring in this concert. From the timeless compositions of John Dowland to contemporary stage music, the sounds of love will be everywhere. The concert will feature Chorale soloists Elke Hook (dramatic soprano) and Jill Erem (soprano). The Chorale is delighted to have Karen Sharples (nee Smithies) a former Accompanist for the Chorale as Guest Artist at this concert. Karen was born and grew up on the Central Coast studying with such teachers as Christopher Bowen, Vaila Mead and Betty Hanna and is well known in the community. She will be accompanying the Chorale in some items in the concert as well as performing as soloist. Karen is a graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, with a Bachelor of Music, majoring in piano performance & accompaniment. She now lives in Tasmania with her husband Matt and their 4 children and plays regularly with the Tasmania Symphony Orchestra. Survivor illustrates the disaster of May 2006 when a drilling operation in the Sidoarjo region of East Java blew out into a mud volcano. The toxic mud so far has drowned more than 11 villages and some 50,000 people have fled their homes. Factories have closed, at least 90 hectares of paddy fields ruined and fish farms destroyed. Every day, more than 20 Olympic swimming pools of mud are produced, slowly consuming more villages. Survivor is a single 3 hour performance; local volunteers silently occupied the gallery space, covered in mud from the neck down and holding a photographic portrait of missing persons. Over the course of three hours participants maintained a silent vigil, memorialising this catastrophe and its ongoing consequences. The work contemplates loss and history, politics and shared humanity. After the performance, the exhibition space contains the detritus from the performance alongside video and photographic documentation of the performance.

Elissa Eastwood (Ramsay)
14 April to 9 May 2012 Elissa Eastwood (Ramsay) is a Central Coast-based artist who works in a unique style using resin, incorporating an eclectic mix of recycled materials and etching to build up very detailed works that due to the nature of the materials used, lure the viewer to look beyond the surface and into the artwork. Counting Zigzags Backwards is an energetic and stimulating body of work, which draws inspiration from literature, ranging from children's illustrated books through to adult fiction. The works travel from vibrant fiery landscapes and sullen stormy skies through to intriguing narrative based works that leave the viewer with questions, challenging them to complete the story.

Let the Sunshine by David Williamson From award-winning, Australian playwright David Williamson comes a satirical comedy set in Noosa which has been described as part Romeo and Juliet, part Meet the Parents. Toby and Ros are retired left wing radicals who flee to the upmarket Sunshine Coast seaside town to escape scandal in Sydney, only to discover that the quaint fishing village of youthful memory is now filled with the sort of wealthy Sydney-siders they’d hoped to leave behind. There they meet Natasha and Ron - a shallow socialite and a brash property developer. A short acquaintance with the two becomes a long-term problem when his slacker son and their highly strung daughter hit it off and the patter of tiny feet brings on the clashing of egos. ‘Highly enjoyable and humorous... Williamson’s ‘Let the Sunshine’ engages the audience and keeps it laughing ... one of our most iconic playwrights’ - Media Culture Duration: 145 mins. Contains strong language and adult themes. The Carousel This historic icon has charmed and delighted young and old at The Entrance since 1930. It has seen a number of owners since its arrival in Australia from France in the early 1900s and is now part of the National Trust classified Haas Family carnival, a family that has 400 years of carnival ancestry. The carousel, which was built in the late 1800s in Germany, was originally ‘powered’ by a pony but was converted to steam at the turn of the century. It remained steam driven until the 1950s when an old chev. engine was installed, and was converted to electricity in the 1970s. Its reed pipe organ, operated by bellows, remained in commission until 1950. Music is now supplied by tape, although the organ front has been restored. The carousel has pride of place on The Entrance waterfront where it is visited by not only today’s children, but by the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of those children.

Azzuro Blu Wharf, The Entrance. "What a lovely evening out. Although it was raining we were able to park within a few metres of Azzuro Blu Wharf, The Entrance where The Italian Restaurant, right on the Waterfront is situated. We were so well served, cold water on the table, a comprehensive wine list, friendly service along with authentic Italian food - it doesn't get much better than that. Oysters, sweet fresh Sydney Rock Oysters were shared by 3 guests at our table. They were succulant Morney, Kilpatrick and Natural, whilst I enjoyed a Chicken Caesar Salad as an entree. Our main dishes were delightful. 2 of our party of 4 had the Scampi Alla Grillia dressed with lemon juice and garlic with rocket salad and shaved parmesan and cherry tomatoes. They thoroughly enjoyed the scampi, our other guest had the Enzo Prawns sauteed with garlic and chili in Napolitana sauce. While I admired the presentation and taste of their meals my favourite was definitely my own. Home made light, fluffy gnocci with a delicate cream sauce accompanied by Sauteed King Prawns and fresh Asparagus - it doesn't get much better than that. Do yourself a favour, enjoy this peaceful haven right on the waterfront with lovely views and food to match. The menu is more exciting than standard Italian restaurants, a great way to relax and enjoy." Carolyn Sinclair, Owner/Chef (Retired) Old Courthouse Restaurant, Minmi, Hunter Valley.
