Classical Music lovers it is your time to swoon, The Crossroads festival is here again on the 23rd & 24th August. See page 46 for the full programme. Pages 44 & 45 give you what’s on at The Con. Something personal. I have a back problem that is treated by Scott & Karma Spa; I have to share with you the amazingly wonderful results I have had from Bonnie using her Hot Stones. See page 16 for her incredibly good offer. I can also personally recommend the ear candling and I have a weekly massage. Thanks to them I am now pain free. I suggest you pay them a visit. Our aim is to give you something wonderful to do each week and I think we cover that nicely. Till spring, stay warm.

They need to have passion for what they do, and they need to care about the role they play. A great celebrant makes all the difference to the success of your day, and is the facilitator, nurturing ideas and encouraging couples, so together we can create a ceremony that accurately depicts you and your love for each other.”

Winter Edition... Winter has rolled around once more, it is the time to find a cosy chair a hot toddy and to snuggle in. Nothing better than a beautiful cashmere shawl or scarf to add to the accessories. We now have a range of these in store, one for any occasion. Now is also the time to do some research on your scarecrow for the Yarramalong spring fair. Want to know more about Scarecrows? Scarecrows are used worldwide, fashioned in many ways, depending on the culture, customs, mythology , superstitions and religious beliefs of the makers. A scarecrow hung with outstretched arms on a wooden cross is suggested to represent the death and resurrection of the crops. Irrespective of the culture the scarecrows message has always been the same “to frighten” or “scare” . In Ancient Greece wooden figures of Priapus, god of fertility, horticulture and viticulture
were placed among the crops as guards. Images of Norse god of Odin and his Ravens Huginn and Muninn have been shown as early models of scarecrows. In Great Britain they are known as hodmedods, murmets and hay-man, To the Bengali’s it’s a kaktadua. A straska to the Czech’s, and Pugalo to the Russians just to name some. So do some research of your own and see what you come up with. But what ever you want to call them beginning of Spring is the time to come out to the valley and see them all along the roadside. The Sydney Male Choir Sunday 24th August Sydney Male Choir in concert with the combined Choirs of St. Peters Catholic College & Primary Schools and Guest Soprano Hannah Greenshields at St. Peters Catholic College Tuggerah. The Sydney Male Choir is a not for profit organization which has, “Bringing joy through song, as its major objective: joy to ourselves as singers, and joy to our audiences. The Choir started in Petersham in 1913 and has sung at every ANZAC Day dawn service in Martin Place since its inception in 1930. In 2013 the choir had the honour of being invited by the Department of Veteran Affairs to be part of the ANZAC Day dawn service at Villers-Bretonneux - a euphoric way to celebrate our centenary. We are proud of our long history which has only been possible by maintaining the very highest
musical standards. This tradition is upheld today by our professional Music Director, Dr Houston Dunleavy, Accompanist, Dewi Liu, and a committed group of over 60 singers prepared to attend rehearsals every week. Our roots may have been local, but today our singers come from a radius of more than 150km around Sydney. Such is their enthusiasm for vocal harmony! Singing in four part harmonies, we add the full and rich sounds of mature male voices to our diverse repertoire that includes songs from the shows, the movies, the pop charts, stirring Welsh hymns, folk songs, popular songs, operatic extracts, sacred works and even a few nonsense rhymes. The Sydney Male Choir is proud to be part of this years Yarramalong Valley Spring Festival.

The Carousel This historic icon has charmed and delighted young and old at The Entrance since 1930. It has seen a number of owners since its arrival in Australia from France in the early 1900s and is now part of the National Trust classified Haas Family carnival, a family that has 400 years of carnival ancestry. The carousel, which was built in the late 1800s in Germany, was originally ‘powered’ by a pony but was converted to steam at the turn of the century. It remained steam driven until the 1950s when an old chev. engine was installed, and was converted to electricity in the 1970s. Its reed pipe organ, operated by bellows, remained in commission until 1950. Music is now supplied by tape, although the organ front has been restored. The carousel has pride of place on The Entrance waterfront where it is visited by not only today’s children, but by the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of those children.

Toowoon Bay Gallery Having sold out of their paintings over Christmas Yvonne Ramsay and Airynaa Tannberg have delivered new works to Toowoon Bay Gallery. Yvonne's vivid landscapes are evocative of swirling, shot silk and taffetas - but then, for many years she was a designer of fabrics - and her colour sense is magical. Airynaa's happy colour paintings clearly show why she holds Toowoon Bay Gallery's record for the most paintings sold in one month. Handmade glass continues to be our most popular gift lines whether big colourful vases, sculptures or pieces of jewellery. The last holiday period again brought a wave of compliments about the spectacular pieces and our reasonable prices. We have a large selection suitable for both personal and corporate gifts. We have been encouraged to increase our range of metal figures. We had no idea they would be so popular; but then they had no idea what could be made out of "nuts and bolts". Have you ever imagined moveable dreadlocks made of fine bicycle chains? There is now a big collection of sportsmen, aliens, wine holders, great money boxes and many motorbikes. They are zany, intriguing and the answer to that everlasting question "what can I give HIM?" Little did we know 37 years ago when Toowoon Bay Gallery opened that we would get so much pleasure from it, come and share it with us. 179 Bay Rd, Toowoon Bay 2261 Ph/Fax: 4332 6023

MARINE RESCUE Central Coast
Is your boat ready for winter? Check that the boat cover is trim, taut and terrific, so that rain and dew do not penetrate. Condensation is inevitable so remove the bungs and ensure that the boat is raised at the bow to ensure that the rain drains from the covers and any internal condensation drains from inside the hull. It is also good practice to lower the engine to drain all the water and help reduce corrosion. Come on summer, come on, come on…
Winter may have arrived late but most boaties have already reduced their time on the water during these shorter (and colder) days. Your boat may be out of use but it shouldn’t be out of mind. Be sure you make your boat ‘winter safe and sound’, so it is ‘ready to go’ when the weather changes. To ensure your battery does not deteriorate it is smart to leave the battery on a low trickle charge over the cold months. This prevents it sitting dead flat for months. Use a one-amp trickle charge. A simple solar charger would be great for this task. Don’t leave unused fuel in boat’s tank and ‘hope’ that it will be OK when you next use the boat. Petrol is expensive, so decant the tank’s content to the car and then refill with fresh fuel when you are again using the boat regularly.

Peninsula Theatre Woy Woy
“INSIGNIFICANCE” at Peninsula Theatre Woy Woy Picture this – a famous sex-kitten actress… a legendary baseball player… a despised American senator… and possibly the world’s most brilliant man… They’re the four characters that come together one hot, steamy night in New York in the early 50s – the night Marilyn Monroe filmed that famous scene for Billy Wilder’s The Seven Year Itch where the hot air from the subway grate blew her dress – and her - into pop icon history. Insignificance revolves around the chance meeting of Marilyn Monroe and Albert Einstein in a New York hotel room on a hot night in 1954. Her husband at the time, Joe DiMaggio and Senator Joseph McCarthy also appear, creating an entertaining and engaging clash of cultures and ideas. Actors cast are Paul Russell (Albert Einstein), Genevieve Neve (Marilyn Monroe), Adam Young (Joe DiMaggio) and Andrew Thomson as McCarthy. This amazing play – a hit when first staged 30 years ago – and one WWLT director Gavin Critchley has waited some 30 years for the opportunity to present his take - is funny, engaging, touching and at times terrifying, while the dialogue is fast, historically accurate and razor sharp. Monroe was 28 then and at the height of her career - nobody was more universally recognised at the time. By contrast, Monroe was actually a very intelligent person who was constantly trapped by the dumb blonde persona she had so carefully created. Playwright Terry Johnson, in this imaginary scenario, allows Marilyn to fulfil her dream of being recognised for her intellect by matching wits with one of her idols – Albert Einstein. Woy Woy Little Theatre will present Insignificance
play at the Peninsula Theatre in Woy Woy in August this year. Performance dates are: 1 August 8pm, 2 August 8pm, 3 August 2pm, 8 August 8pm, 9 August 8pm, 10 August 2pm, 15 August 8pm, 16 August 2pm & 8pm, 17 August 2pm. There are three easy ways to book: On line (www. woywoylt.com.au) – on the phone 4344 4737 (leave your name and number – a box office volunteer will get back to you within 48 hours) – or in person when the Peninsula Theatre box office opens between 10 and 12 noon Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from Monday July 21. Adults $25.00, Conc. $22.00, Child (5-15) $7.00. Groups 20 or more Adult tickets: $23.00 each.

Gosford Regional Gallery Reconciliation Gallery One: Until 13 July This annual event provides an opportunity for local Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal artists to showcase work about reconciliation. Entry is open to all amateur and professional Aboriginal and non- Aboriginal artists resident on the Central Coast. Colleen O’Keeffe: Lake Eyre Revisited Foyer Gallery: Until 25 June Colleen O’Keeffe became preoccupied with the natural landscape of Lake Eyre after a visit in 2011. Not normally a landscape painter, O’Keeffe was inspired by the vast sweeps of colour and the freedom this afforded her to experiment with mark making. Not happy with simply recreating the optical adventure she experienced at Lake Eyre, O’Keeffe sought to create a densely layered experience of the Sublime. Helene Leane Foyer Gallery: 28 June to 30 July Using a multi-layered monotype printmaking technique, Leane creates landscapes drawn from the subconscious Helen Leane Morning Glow with a palette of rich purples and greens. The images also evoke recognisable places, providing the viewer with a sense of rediscovery, memory, reflection and contemplation. You Call it Desert, We Used to Live There: Artlines - Jimmy Pike Gallery Two: Until 13 July This exhibition is a selection of vibrant felt-tip pen drawings by Jimmy Pike that bring the artist's country in the Great Sandy Desert of Western Australia into glorious relief through renderings of spirit beings, flowers, stars and earthscapes. The works on paper, created between 1990 and 2000, draw on the knowledge and skills Pike learnt as a boy growing up in the hunting-gathering tradition of his family in the desert. His intimate knowledge of his country is translated through the varying styles and themes surveyed in this collection of drawings. While Jimmy Pike is best known for his acrylic paintings on canvas, and the
internationally recognised textile designs through Desert Designs label, this exhibition showcases his experimental approach to colour, texture and drawing. After trying many spirit markers, Pike settled on Artline 70 and 90 for their strong and enduring colours. Winter Planting Advice from Penrose Garden and Aquarium Winter is a great time to get your garden into shape, plant some annuals and prepare for an explosion of colour and produce in the spring. Enjoy the last gasp of the Autumn perennials like Salvia and Lavender and then give them a hard “Boy Prune to shape them up for spring. This will leave plenty of spaces in between for a planting of Pansies and Viola for instant colour, or the slower to flower but fragrant Stock. Now is the time for your Camellia to shine..first the hardy and colourful Sasanqua which make such a colourful hedge..then the showy Japonica with its bigger flowers and glossier leaf. Underplant these with some of the new Helebore or Winter Rose varieties for a succession of colour on a grey winter day. It is time to plant out your veggie garden

now with Potatoes. They are fantastic to start up a new patch being undemanding and will break up the ground. Plant in a trench with a side dressing of complete fertilizer, then mound up around the new growth with soil or straw. Choose Sebago as a great all round variety, or go for a boutique spud such as Kipfler or Dutch Cream. Rhubarb and Asparagus can be planted now as dormant crowns, and will produce abundant crops of fresh food in summer. Roses are due for their annual haircut, down to 3 or 4 buds from the crown. Cut out the really old wood, spray with Lime Sulphur to clear off scale and fungal spores, and feed them up. If in doubt then spread some manure around everywhere, grab some mulch and lash it on thickly. Make sure that all your trimmings and fallen leaves get into your compost heap, ready to use for planting in the spring. Most of all take advantage of the cooler weather to get Down and Dirty !
