Summer on the Coast From the Editor Summer is a wonderful time to enjoy the sensational Central Coast, with warmer days and nights we are out enjoying so many things that are put away over winter. A leisurely walk through one of our national parks will reward and replenish the spirit with the tranquillity of coastal bushland and stunning views. Edogawa Commemorative Garden at the Gosford Gallery is looking so beautiful and serene. A leisurely stroll through the garden after visiting the gallery to view The Archibald Prize Regional Tour, then lunching at the restaurant makes for a wonderful day out. The Coast never lacks for entertainment and this summer is no exception as you will find when you read your iMag, have your highlighter at the ready to mark your next outing. The Melbourne cup, Fishing, Swimming, Boating, the Oyster Festival, Twilight Markets, Markets, Christmas festivities, Lighting of the Trees, Carols in the Parks, Concerts, Beautiful Music, Art exhibitions and up the road to Wollombi via our Beautiful Hinterland we have “Sculptures in The Vineyards”. There sure is something for everyone.

Gosford/Edogawa Commemorative Garden Gosford formed a Sister City Agreement with Edogawa, Japan in 1988. A gift from Edogawa, the garden was officially opened in September 1994 and is based on a traditional ‘shuyu’ (strolling style) garden, incorporating Japanese features. With meandering pathways, a roofed Japanese pavilion overlooking the Koi pond, raked dry stone garden and traditional Japanese teahouse, the Gosford/Edogawa

Commemorative Garden offers a tranquil setting in which to relax and enjoy art and nature. Philosophy of the Japanese garden Chinese and Japanese philosophy tell us that ones life can be lived more fully by being open to the universal rhythms of nature. A Japanese garden seeks to give us a tranquil setting for meditation and reflection. We hope you enjoy your visit to this garden and find pleasure in its beauty and tranquility. Informal tours detailing the Japanese aesthetics of the garden are conducted by trained guides every Wednesday at 11.00 am or by request. The garden is open daily from 9.30 am to 4.30 pm. Entry is free. Gosford Regional Gallery & Gosford-Edogawa Commemorative Garden 36 Webb Street, East Gosford 2250 Phone: 02 4325 0056 www.gosfordregionalgallery.com/garden.htm

Robyn Pedley Desert Song Desert Song is the upcoming exhibition of new works by Bobbie P Gallery’s resident artist, Robyn Pedley. Robyn’s new series is the result of a midwinter outback trip to White Cliffs and Mutawintji National Park with nine other artists, to immerse herself in the landscape. From deserts to gorges, the vastly different environments awakened the senses, giving rise to new concepts and techniques. As a result of recent rains, the landscape had gone through rejuvenation, as if the earth was flourishing with a new song. The colours of winter in the outback are celebrated with this new exhibition from Robyn Pedley. Robyn is completing a Bachelor of Fine Art at Newcastle University, runs drawing workshops and has exhibited in numerous venues from artist-run initiatives to showing

in Sydney, Melbourne, Blue Mountains, Newcastle, and the Central Coast. Her work is held in various public and private collections throughout Australia and New Zealand. Desert Song opens with light refreshments on Thursday November 13, 6-8pm and the exhibition will run from November 13-27 at Bobbie P Gallery, 11 Alison Rd, Wyong. Contact 0490 061 949 or visit www.bobbiepgallery.com for further details.

Alberts Café & Takeaway Alberts big breakfast is on the Menu all day every-day and is probably the best value on the Coast! For just $13.95 you get eggs, bacon, sausage, tomatoes mushrooms, toast and a glass of orange juice!

Specialised Massage Therapies with Scott Buchanan "I do a few different types of massage therapies. Some clients leave it to me to treat what I find and the way that I treat them while other clients request certain treatments that they prefer. My specialty is definitely M.S.T Bowen therapy. There are a few different types of Bowen therapies around and this is one of the best. With this I can assess a client and correct postural and skeletal imperfections and misalignments just by adjusting muscle. There is NO skeletal forced manipulation or “cracking”. This treatment can be done in half an hour while clothed for just $50.00. So for those of you, who don’t want to be massaged, maybe a little self-conscious, are stretched for cash or if you can only spare half an hour then this is for you. INTRODUCTORY SPECIAL on Wednesdays I am offering a 90 min treatment for the standard $80.00. I do a half hour full Bowen treatment and then an amazing therapist named Julie comes in and gives you a 1 hour full body massage. This special offers a complete treatment with both these modalities complementing each other weather you need just to release stress or treat a chronic issue. I look forward to meeting you soon." OK IT’S CHRISTMAS TIME AGAIN……. First thought....HO HO HUM not again, here already.... deep breath and then I slap myself....remember all the lovely activities I used to do at Christmas before life became crazy. First memories - waking up in the morning, wandering out to the tree on Christmas morning and seeing all the presents, then going to church, racing home dragging Dad out of bed to open the presents, then the all-important ceremony of taking

turns to open your presents and see what you all received. Kindergarten was another big one, making paper decorations and colouring in the Christmas pictures. I loved it. Then the next momentous activities were the Christmas plays, parties, threading the popcorn on string to make garlands, popping the Christmas poppers and making sure everyone wore their gorgeous crown that came out of the poppers. I can remember the special glasses Mum would let us kids have at the Christmas table, they were pink with real gold around the rims and were made of the finest glass, so you had to be really careful not to break them. Then as I got older and had my own children making our own presents together for the family and decorating them specially, giving with pride and letting everyone know that ‘I made this’.

Have you been hacked or conned or maybe you haven’t noticed yet? Since we all started plugging into the Internet during the early 90’s, it’s opened many new and wonderful doors, enhanced our connections to Richard Krupka the world, allowed us to meet Owner PC Wrangler new friends, stay in touch with family and provided us with the ability to perform tasks more quickly and efficiently. It’s been great for the criminals too! We’ve opened virtual doors into our lives, our homes and our bank accounts. Very few people understand the risk and believe that it will never happen to them; the victims we hear about on the news are random faceless people. The fact is that criminals can now access us from the safety and comfort of their homes, from anywhere in the world. Their risk is minimal, it’s hard to identify them and the laws are still catching up with the technology. I’ve been working in the IT Industry for over 18 years, from Software Development to hardware maintenance and data security; and over that time there has always been the issue of privacy and security. Just to highlight how easily it can happen, here are some interesting statistics that I gathered in through my business in relation to the Central Coast alone: Since December 2013, we have gone to the aid of dozens of clients who believed they’ve been “hacked” and had money stolen from bank accounts. We estimate the value to be around $100,000 (in fact it could be even higher). My next door neighbours were taken for $46,000, which was later located in several overseas bank accounts that had been setup in their own names! The Government estimates that Australians annually lose $10 Billion to Internet crime, and that figure is only going up. But how does it happen? Well it can be through hackers infecting your computer with a virus. And if you

own a Mac, pay attention, you’re not immune, despite what you may have been told! However, it’s more likely people were conned into handing over their details via email or over the internet (not hacked).

Tips to keeping yourself protected: 1. Install decent Antivirus Software and keep it up-to-date (I don’t rate the free products, spend some money) 2. Only buy from a reputable source, there are some viruses that pretend to be antivirus products. 3. Never open any email from a bank, business or government/law enforcement agency that is asking you to follow a link or enter your login details. 4. Don’t open email attachments if you don’t know who sent it 5. Don’t install any software you don’t know 6. Avoid the illegal torrent sites, they’re infested 7. If Microsoft, Telstra or some other security company call saying you have been hacked, hang up 8. Be smart about email scams, if it sounds too good, it is! 9. Only enter your Credit Card details into websites that start with https:// and the certificate is valid: 10. If you are unsure, don’t continue. Call someone! The Carousel This historic icon has charmed and delighted young and old at The Entrance since 1930. It has seen a number of owners since its arrival in Australia from France in the early 1900s and is now part of the National Trust classified Haas Family carnival, a family that has 400 years of carnival ancestry. The carousel, which was built in the late 1800s in Germany, was originally ‘powered’ by a pony but was converted to steam at the turn of the century. It remained steam driven until the 1950s when an old chev. engine was installed, and was converted to electricity in the 1970s. Its reed pipe organ, operated by bellows, remained in commission until 1950. Music is now supplied by tape, although the organ front has been restored. The carousel has pride of place on The Entrance waterfront where it is visited by not only today’s children, but by the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of those children.

MARINE RESCUE Central Coast

Some Summer Boating Safety Hints Be sure to carry and drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Wear a hat and use sunburn protection to reduce the risk of sunstroke. If you consume alcohol, be sure to wear a life jacket. In the event of a capsize or accident alcohol can accelerate the effects of hypothermia.

Summer holidays will see many locals and visitors enjoying the waterways around the Central Coast. Marine Rescue offers a few boating safety tips to keep in mind this summer. Each time you go out let someone know where you expect to be, and when you expect to return. You can ‘Log on’ with Marine Rescue by radio or by mobile phone (4325 7929) as you depart the ramp.

Photo: Family enjoying summer boating

Prepare for the worst, wear an approved lifejacket, and be sure you have children’s size jackets if appropriate. Check the weather forecast before you go. Learn about the waterway; get a map or chart of the area and check it out before you go out on the water. Properly load your vessel, leave a walkway down the centre, so you can move around in safety. Look at the capacity plate on your boat and do not exceed its designated load limits.

Peninsula Theatre Woy Woy

Woy Woy Little Theatre 2015 Season of Plays is moving with the times. The offering includes three “new” plays written during the past 14 years and a 90 year old Nöel Coward classic. The comedy Yes, Prime Minister is ‘first cab off the rank’. Based on the popular TV series, the story hilariously delves behind the top job in England and will be staged in February/March. (Adult themes). Next up is Irish dramatist Bernard Farrell’s dark comedy Lovers at Versailles, examining the plight of three women who are left behind when Stephen Sullivan suddenly dies. His wife Clara suspected Stephen had a hidden life. She’s right. On stage in May. (Adult themes). Third production for 2015 is another recent play – written just 3 years ago – Jeffrey Hatcher’s Sherlock Holmes and the Adventure of the Suicide Club. In the heart of London is The Suicide Club with new member Sherlock Holmes. Why does the greatest detective in the world wish to die? Can his friend Dr Watson save him? Or doesn’t Holmes want to be saved? This “thrilling comic mystery” will be staged in August. (Adult themes). Finally, Nöel Coward’s 1924 classic, Hay Fever. Best described as a cross between high farce and a comedy of bad manners, the play

starts with the arrival of four guests, invited independently by different members of the Bliss family for a weekend at their country house near Maidenhead. The promise of an idyllic and peaceful weekend is quickly trounced by the self-absorbed eccentricities of the family. To be staged October/ November. (Adult themes). All Woy Woy Little Theatre plays are presented at the Peninsula Theatre. Subscription Season brochures will be available at the Peninsula Theatre, local libraries and Community Centres in Woy Woy, Ettalong, Kincumber, Green Point, Erina, Wyoming and Kariong. Tickets: www.woywoylt.com.au, 4344 4737 or at the Peninsula Theatre box office between 10 and 12 noon Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from Monday 20 October.

Non Alcoholic Drinks from Alcofree Alcofree is a company new to the Central Coast and indeed new to NSW. They are the only company that specialises in retailing a wide range of non-alcoholic drinks – that is: beers, wines, ciders, cocktails and more. Not everyone chooses alcoholic drinks. Some chose not to drink on some occasions only - pregnant women, designated drivers, athletes and people on some medications for example. Others choose not to drink perhaps as a lifestyle or religious choice. Alcofree was established to give these people a selection of great drinks that look and taste the same or very similar as the alcoholic version, yet without the downside of alcohol. Great for celebrations of all types! And for corporate functions where the ‘duty of care’ factor is high (and the taxman is always looking), their range of alcohol free and non-alcoholic beers and wines go down very tastefully and responsibly. In fact most cannot tell the difference between their beers and the normal brew. Check them out at www.alcofree.com.au or visit their bar at Unit1/15-17 Ace Crescent Tuggerah. Ph: 4351 7176

Wood Glen claims first place in 2014 Gosford Garden Competition Wood Glen Retirement Village has trumped the competition to win their fifth title since 2007 in Gosford City Council’s annual Garden Competition. Judged under the category ‘Best Nursing Home/ Retirement Village/Over 50's Village Garden (Maintained by Professionals)’, the village’s exotic and native flora put on a fabulous show for the judges who were, once again, seriously impressed by the flawlessly manicured grounds.

“Both of my parents were keen gardeners and I feel very proud to have contributed to Wood Glen’s success,” he says. Wood Glen Retirement Village 105 Karalta Road, Erina NSW Phone 02 4365 6800

“In 2014, the calibre of entries in the Gosford City Garden Competition was stronger than ever before, with many new residents, schools and businesses from right across Gosford City taking part,” the Council said. The ceremony was held at the Erina Centre, Erina Fair on Thursday 18th September and the certificate was presented to the Village Manager, Deborah Baker, and her dedicated gardening team of Ryan Locklee and Ryan McGrath, lead by Brett Appleton. “We are so fortunate to work within such breathtaking surrounds,” Deborah said proudly. “Wood Glen really is one of the most beautiful environments and our residents and guests often liken it to being in a public botanical gardens.” Set against the stunning native bushland backdrop of Kincumba Mountain Reserve, the village boasts elevated leafy views and a climate perfect for lush growth. “It’s like being in a tropical, five star resort,” enthuses Brett who spends 40 hours a week battling the climate to cultivate bulbs, mow lawns, trim hedges and feed flowers.

Summer in the Garden

Mulch is vital!

Looking after your soil is the key to a luxuriant and easy care garden. With a little “Tender Loving Care” for the soil, your precious plants will thrive and grow over the summer...even on the sunniest of days. 60

www.monthlyimag.com.au

The first step is to look after yourself.....Slip Slop Slap before you get down and dirty ! Try to garden in the cool of the morning or the longer evenings and leave midday for the Lizards. Next step is to provide some food for your plants. Spread around some manure or pelletised organic fertilizer such as OrganicExtra to gently feed the new growth over the growing season. If the soil seems dry, consider using a soil wetting agent to improve water penetration and save on water. Its easy to scatter on at this stage, or use a liquid form from a watering can. Now you need to provide some insulation and protection for those important roots....a little summer blanket ! There are many types of mulch from pine bark, through sugar cane to pebbles. The common factors are that they hold moisture in the soil, keep the heat out, and help reduce weeds. It’s hard to think of a plant that does not appreciate mulching, just keep it a little away from the trunk of the plant, and make it nice and thick. Lucerne and Sugar Cane are best for the veggie and flower gardens. Use Tea Tree or Eucalyptus mulch around shrubs and natives. Polished pebbles really highlight your succulents in a pot or the garden. Last of all is the watering. With rain still scarce it is important not to waste town water, so irrigate gardens deeply a couple of times a week. Use the cooler times of the day so that the water doesn’t just evaporate back into the atmosphere. Small pots might need watering every day in the height of summer, larger ones maybe every second day.
