Welcoming spring to the Central Coast From the Editor The sensational Central Coast can be all things to all people in spring. Our national parks and reserves are colourful with displays of wildflowers and our beaches beckon long walks and maybe a swim for the hardy. You can also hire a boat from Andersons Boat Shed. One of our favourite things to do is cruise around Brisbane Waters on one of their BBQ boats, see p 31. The arts and entertainment scene offers a wide range of concerts, shows and exhibitions. Spring is the start of our fun season and festivals; its Oyster time again and Umina celebrates its Centenary. The Yarramalong Spring Festival is also in full swing. Drive into the hinterlands and see the wonderful scarecrows, vote for your favourite, they are such fun. School holidays are fun for the family and a must go-to is our famous Reptile Park see p48. We introduce a new section on p 58 - 61 for the keen gardeners or if you just love walking through a beautiful garden you can do that too. The Plant Lovers Fair has such an amazing array of plants you can buy or speak to a professional for some great gardening tips.

On a personal note. Scott Buchanan has a special for all you back sufferers, helping you suffer no more! I wouldn’t be doing my own deliveries or working at the computer if Scott was not around to help me. I cannot thank him enough. Like most, I had a shocking cold and felt dreadful, I went to Karma Spa and Bonita designed a treatment to help get rid of the aches and help heal me quicker. I can only say that you need to try this, it’s now on offer for all our readers. It’s amazing how much healthier I feel, see p 16 & 17. Mirna is another professional for you to visit at Karma, there’s no reason for you not to feel completely pampered and at peace after you have tried a treatment at Karma Spa. The rates are the best on the Coast. Happy Father's Day to all our readers.

It is always delightful to be able to bring old pieces of furniture back to life, the ability to turn something that would be considered quite dated in the modern industry into a piece of furniture that can be treasured for more years to come. It may be an item of furniture that has been passed down through generations which carries more sentimental value rather than shop value and that no longer matches any of your other more current furnishings. Being able to strip back the old varnish and resurface a piece of furniture with a fresh coat of paint can sometimes be all that it takes to reignite the furniture’s
spark to create a certain charm amongst the home. Not only does it give a great satisfaction of knowing that you have been able to recycle a piece of furniture but it also offers a great talking piece, as all old furniture comes with a great story to tell. We know all too well of the satisfaction that comes with revamping old pieces of furniture into works of art, which is why we have included pictures of some of our more recent before and after projects. I am sure you will agree that the transformation is quite incredible.

Specialised Massage Therapies with Scott Buchanan "I do a few different types of massage therapies. Some clients leave it to me to treat what I find and the way that I treat them while other clients request certain treatments that they prefer. My specialty is definitely M.S.T Bowen therapy. There are a few different types of Bowen therapies around and this is one of the best. With this I can assess a client and correct postural and skeletal imperfections and misalignments just by adjusting muscle. There is NO skeletal forced manipulation or “cracking”. This treatment can be done in half an hour while clothed for just $50.00. So for those of you, who don’t want to be massaged, maybe a little self-conscious, are stretched for cash or if you can only spare half an hour then this is for you. INTRODUCTORY SPECIAL on Wednesdays I am offering a 90 min treatment for the standard $80.00. I do a half hour full Bowen treatment and then an amazing therapist named Julie comes in and gives you a 1 hour full body massage. This special offers a complete treatment with both these modalities complementing each other weather you need just to release stress or treat a chronic issue. I look forward to meeting you soon." Delineate is the upcoming exhibition of new works by Central Coast artist Christopher Dewar to be held at Bobbie P Gallery, Wyong. Completing his BFA at the National Art School, Sydney in 2012, Christopher has since been working from his studio and in the indigenous community of Haasts Bluff NT. Christopher's work explores the boundary between abstraction and representation. This new series of works draws from family life on the Central Coast and community life in the Central Desert. Using a variety of media including watercolour, oils and acrylic silk screens, these works focus on colour and shape to delineate person and place. Delineate opens with light refreshments on Thursday 16th October, 6-8pm and the exhibition will run from 16th-23rd October at Bobbie P Gallery, 11 Alison Rd, Wyong. ‘Feng shui in Spring’ Spring is the season of renewal. Mother Earth shows us each year the importance of renewed energy. She has a rest period storing energy and ideas and releases this in the spring, the most beautiful time of the year. We need to tap into this energy and take the free lessons Mother Earth is giving to us. Turn off the TV’s , the computers and mobile phones and go for a long walk taking note of the renewal around us. Bulbs sprouting up, Blossoms bursting open, trees renewing their leaves, baby animals and birds playing and chirping, all displaying this vibrant new energy. We need to take this energy to our homes. Do some space clearing. Bring in some fresh flowering plants, which are excellent for Spring Feng shui. Rearrange your furniture for a new flow, open closets, get rid of clothing you haven’t worn in a long time, open the windows for the whole day
to allow new energy in. Put some Rose Quartz Crystals near your Bed, Rose Quartz promotes unconditional love, forgiveness, infinite peace and compassion. It creates harmony in relationships and teaches us about the true essence of love. It purifies and opens up the heart allowing us to express our emotions. Sydney Male Choir in concert with the combined Musicians and Voices of St. Peters Catholic College and Guest Soprano Hannah Greenshields at St. Peters Catholic College Tuggerah
2.00pm, Sunday 24th August 2014 As part of this year’s Yarramalong Valley Spring Festival, the renowned Sydney Male Choir is coming to perform at St. Peters Catholic College, Tuggerah, with the students of St. Peters Catholic College and guest soprano Hannah Greenshields, to provide an enjoyable afternoon of song and music. The Sydney Male Choir is a not for profit organization which has, “Bringing joy through song”, as its major objective: joy to both their singers and audiences. The Choir started in Petersham in 1913 and has sung at every ANZAC Day dawn service in Martin Place since its inception in 1930. In 2013 the choir had the honour of being invited by the Department of Veteran Affairs to be part of the ANZAC Day dawn service at Villers-Bretonneux - a euphoric way to celebrate their centenary. The Choir is proud of its long history which has only been possible by maintaining the very highest musical standards. This tradition is upheld today by their professional Music Director, Dr Houston Dunleavy, Accompanist, Dewi Liu, and a committed group of over 50 singers prepared to attend rehearsals every week. The Choirs repertoire includes songs from the shows, the movies, the pop charts, stirring Welsh hymns, folk songs, popular songs, operatic extracts, sacred works and even a few nonsense rhymes. This concert will blend the rich velvet sound of the mature male voices of the Sydney Male Choir, with the vibrant and youthful sounds of the students from St Peters College and a touch of class with the superb voice of soprano Hannah Greenshields. The Sydney Male Choir is proud to be part of this year’s Yarramalong Valley Spring Festival TICKET PRICES: Adults $20.00 Concessions $15.00 Children $10.00. The Carousel This historic icon has charmed and delighted young and old at The Entrance since 1930. It has seen a number of owners since its arrival in Australia from France in the early 1900s and is now part of the National Trust classified Haas Family carnival, a family that has 400 years of carnival ancestry. The carousel, which was built in the late 1800s in Germany, was originally ‘powered’ by a pony but was converted to steam at the turn of the century. It remained steam driven until the 1950s when an old chev. engine was installed, and was converted to electricity in the 1970s. Its reed pipe organ, operated by bellows, remained in commission until 1950. Music is now supplied by tape, although the organ front has been restored. The carousel has pride of place on The Entrance waterfront where it is visited by not only today’s children, but by the parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of those children.

MARINE RESCUE Central Coast
A Lifejacket never ruined a Great Day on the Water now many different types on the market. Choose from a jacket or vest, a yoke or a belt bag inflatable style and ensure you read and understand the instructions. Be sure to familiarise yourself with the procedures and the care required for your jacket while not in use.
There are three main types of lifejackets, all built to different standards of buoyancy, and purposely designed for different kinds of marine activities. All lifejackets used in NSW must comply with AS 4758. For the best performance and safety, choose a Type 1 Lifejacket (also known as a Level 150 or Level 100 PFD). It provides the highest level of buoyancy; it is designed to keep the wearer’s head above water if unconscious. There are two kinds of Type 1 – those with fixed in-built buoyancy, and those that are inflated manually or automatically activated when the lifejacket comes into contact with water. While inflatables are great, because they are comfortable to wear, boaters should be aware of the maintenance requirements that come with this style of jacket, as well as the need for a passenger briefing on its operation. There are

“THE ODD COUPLE”
by Neil Simon Directed by Shea Wicks Neil Simon’s original version of “The Odd Couple” was his third Broadway success in the mid 60s. Felix Unger's wife has just given him the boot, and since his suicide attempts were a flop, he finds refuge in the sloppy apartment of his long-time friend Oscar Madison, a recently divorced man himself. Together with their friends Murray the Cop, Speed, Roy and Vinnie, they all try to cope with the trials of marriage and divorce by playing poker, drinking beer, and complaining to each other. Living with the slovenly, dumpy Oscar is no picnic and living with Felix is like living with a permanent maid! To escape the hum-drum life of two newly separated bachelors, Oscar introduces Felix to the "Pigeon" sisters, Gwendolyn and Cecily. What should have been a cosy evening for four turns into a pity party with enough tears to fill a highball glass! As tempers rise, Oscar kicks Felix out and ironically sends him into the coddling arms of the Pigeon Sisters. With razor sharp wit and comedic timing that is the genius of Neil Simon, this wonderful and well known comedy will surely be another huge hit for Woy Woy Little Theatre at the Peninsula Theatre.
Cast includes Steve Cummings as Felix and David Wicks as Oscar. Tickets: www.woywoylt.com.au, 4344 4737 or at the Peninsula Theatre box office between 10 and 12 noon Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from Monday 20 October. Alcofree is a company new to the Central Coast and indeed new to NSW. They are the only company that specialises in retailing a wide range of nonalcoholic drinks – that is: beers, wines, ciders, cocktails and more. Not everyone chooses alcoholic drinks. Some chose not to drink on some occasions only - pregnant women, designated drivers, athletes and people on some medications for example. Others choose not to drink perhaps as a lifestyle or religious choice. Alcofree was established to give these people a selection of great drinks that look and taste the same

or very similar as the alcoholic version, yet without the downside of alcohol. Great for celebrations of all types! And for corporate functions where the ‘duty of care’ factor is high (and the taxman is always looking), their range of alcohol free and non-alcoholic beers and wines go down very tastefully and responsibly. In fact most cannot tell the difference between their beers and the normal brew. Check them out at www.alcofree.com.au or visit their bar at Unit1/15-17 Ace Crescent Tuggerah. Ph: 4351 7176

Spring is a fantastic time to get the whole family involved in some productive outdoor fun. Children love to dig in the soil and with just a little assistance can develop a lifelong interest in gardening. Choose something easy to start off with such as Strawberries or Sunflowers. Both will grow easily in a nice sunny spot in the garden, or can be planted in pots if space is limited. Herbs are another great first choice and many types can be purchased in small pots or grown from seed. With a little creativity these can be grown in a wide range of recycled containers..an old bath, laundry tub or wheel barrow. Spring is Tomato time, so grow the old favourite cherry variety “Sweet Bite. Its quick to grow, disease free and the fruit can be eaten off the vine with the warmth of the sun still in them. Like all tomatoes keep them well fed with a liquid food and plant them in the sun Garden art is another way of getting littlies involved. Some colourful paint can turn an old gate into a garden feature, dress up some old pots, or brighten up a fence. Keep up the colour with flowers in amongst the veggies, Lavender attracts pollinating insects and Nasturtiums and Marigolds keep off the bugs. A small frog pond is an easy weekend project. Use a small pre formed pool, square of pond liner, or the old sand pit. Plant with a couple of native reeds and pop in a couple of Native fish to keep out the mozzies. The kids will enjoy watching and waiting for the first tadpoles to appear over summer. Whichever project you choose, Spring is natures planting time so give it a go now!
