From the Editor During the coming months, visitors and locals alike have a wonderful array of events to attend or participate in, as this very diverse and rich area offers up its best. Early in the January, Picton will host the annual Picton Rodeo and later in January, the Illawarra Folk Club will hold its annual Folk Festival, offering an eclectic mix of music from a variety of cultures and styles. Participate and enjoy a real ‘Aussie day’ out this year when Berrima celebrates Australia Day in style once again! Lots of fun, entertainment and market stalls, plus the usual parade and awards ceremony will make this event a day not to be missed. If you enjoy a good old fashioned country show, then you can look forward to the Robertson and Moss Vale Shows. Throughout 2015, Bundanoon will celebrate 150 years. Residents are planning to host a variety of events and activities that will highlight the richness and diversity of this delightful village. For the devotees of theatre, the superb Highlands Theatre Group will present an Agatha Christie murder mystery. ‘A Murder is Announced’. From the moment the gates open on Friday, 6 March until the spectacular fireworks display the following evening, this year’s show program promises to be one of the best ever presented with something for all members of the family. A Cast is Announced Following an information evening on December 1st, the Highlands Theatre Group held open auditions on Sunday, December 7th for their first play to be presented in 2015, Agatha Christie’s classic murder mystery, ‘A Murder Is Announced’. The audition afternoon in Bowral attracted a large number of diverse, highly talented individuals, all sharing the same ambition. That being, to secure one of the twelve roles in this complex and extremely clever drawing room comedy, featuring of course, the equally clever and complex super sleuth, Miss Marple. Congratulations, must go to the following recipients of the seven major roles: Jan Merriman, Maryanne Bawden, Kirsty Clancy, Kirrily Hope, Tiana Hope- Nicholson, Steven Gray and Thomas Moss. They, along with the rest of the cast next February, will lead their audience down many a twisting, turning, pathway, presenting them with a myriad of clues and red herrings, as they join Miss Jane Marple, in unravelling a most unusual murder. The setting for the play, regarded as one of Christie’s masterpieces and written in 1950, is the sleepy, English village of Chipping Cleghorn, a place where nothing out of the ordinary ever happens. That is, until a notice in the local gazette is placed, stating that ‘A murder is announced and will take place at 6:30pm on Friday 13th at Little Paddocks.’

This happens to be that very evening and the address belongs to that of Letitia Blacklock, who operates ‘Little Paddocks’ as a stately boarding house and home to several, now quite confused boarders. As the afternoon draws to a close, a mood of nervous anticipation ensues among the residents, along with several curious villagers who have also dropped by, including Miss Marple. All wait excitedly to see what kind of party joke or entertainment might be revealed, but at 6:30 pm precisely, the lights go out and the sound of a gunshot is heard. Murder most foul has been committed and the victim is not even one of the guests! This is Christie at her best. For anyone who enjoys a good mystery, peppered with lively dialogue and sharp wit, this play will most definitely be one to look forward to in February next year. “A Murder Is Announced’ will be staged at the Mittagong Playhouse between the 13th and 28th of February, 2015.

The line-up for the day includes: Chieftain of the Day, Norman Alexander Macdonald, High Commissioner Clan Donald Australia. Mary Kaini. Mary will entertain and delight the crowds at Brigadoon with her wonderful Scottish brogue. She will sing Scotland’s National Song “Flower of Scotland” at the Opening Ceremony and will appear again on Stage several times during the day. “Pumpkin Juice” - children’s Fiddle Band which features four kids aged between 11 and 15 having fun playing fast and cheerful Scottish

Berrima Celebrates Australia Day The Australia Day Celebrations in historic Berrima, over the last 10 years, have grown to be one of the Southern Highlands premier tourist events. Visitor numbers are in the vicinity of 5000 to 8000 thousand every year and on the increase. What’s the attraction? Probably the location. No other village in the southern highlands can claim to have a more historic and picturesque backdrop in which to celebrate this day in our nations calendar of public holidays. With over 60-market stalls, local and interstate, and entertainment for all the family; grand parades vintage cars, fire engine displays, fresh produce markets, face painting there is something for everyone. The atmosphere is one of a real Aussie family day out with a bit of patriotism and pride in our country thrown in for good measure. White Heat, curated by Zara Collins, is an exhibition of ceramic wearables created using a diverse range of approaches, materials and techniques. Pieces include porcelain hollow ware, hand tinted beads, copper crocheted pendants and hand etched illustration, and the display runs until 22 February 2015. Susan Buret has extended the picture plane in her exhibition Axis to include wall and floor, and used painted tessellated triangular ply working with colour, form and fragmentation to explore some of the characteristics of pattern. On display 28 February – 10 May Wollongong Art Gallery actively collects contemporary art by locally and nationally significant artists. Recent acquisitions of assemblage, collage, photography, drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture will be on display until 29 March.
