Bowral will come alive this spring with colourful displays of tulip bulbs blooming for the annual Tulip Time Festival. The Southern Highlands celebrates Tulip Time with a host of activities and events. showcasing what the area does best. Look forward to the following events; Camden will hold its annual, two-week festival of family fun and entertainment and as well, Campbelltown City will hold the annual Fisher’s Ghost Festival in November. Highlights include, fun for kids, carnival rides, fireworks and much more! During the annual Food and Wine Festival you can enjoy not only wines, but also local produce and culinary demonstrations from local chefs. There will be art and craft displays as well as live entertainment. As well, in September, Bowral will host the annual Home and Garden Show, offering all you fancy for your home and garden in the one venue. More for the garden enthusiast; Bundanoon will hold its Garden Ramble and the Goulburn Lilac Festival is one for the diary; lots of fun, music, dance, food and activities will make this a 'must attend' event. In the midst of the festival season, Robertson will offer its Open Gardens event in October. These events will surely please garden lovers and those of you who enjoy a country fair. To top off this eclectic mix of cultural, floral, food and wine events, Goulburn will begin its Spring Event Series, Goulburn Waterworks will hold an art display and the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre will present Circus Oz in September and Monkey in October. Lastly, be sure not to miss the annual Warragamba Dam Festival set in the beautiful Wollondilly region in October.

The Home & Garden Show to return to Bowral 10 to 11 October - 10am to 4pm After a successful inaugural event last September, the Home & Garden Show will once again be held at the Bong Bong Racecourse. It will be another comprehensive showcase of all things home and garden. The 2015 Show will feature over 150 exhibitors including furniture companies, landscapers, designers, home improvement companies, garden art, landscape supplies, nurseries and so much more. As with last year, there will be a comprehensive schedule of events across three stages including presentations, demonstrations and competitions. Some of the highlights will include stone wall building, construction of a straw bale home, cooking, garden and interior design demonstrations. There will also be loads activities for the kids including DIY classes and face painting. The growth of the Home and Garden Show
has been quicker than expected with visitor numbers expected to increase this year. Our new partners for 2015 are Bare Greens, Gibraltar Park and Artemis Wines. A key part of the Home and Garden Show is the educational aspect. Having approached the team at Cancer Council NSW, they were very enthusiastic about getting involved and the idea of the pink “Garden of Hope” . Tickets are $10 with under 15 years free and there is no extra charge for any of the demonstrations or presentations. Leashed dogs are also welcome. Visit the website for further information. The Southern Highlands Arts Festival 1 - 30 November The Arts Festival is an annual month long event held each November which celebrates the work of our local community of artists and makers alongside internationally acclaimed talent. The Southern Highlands Art Studio Trail, a once a year opportunity to see beyond the studio door of some of our local artists, is on again over the first two weekends of November. The Art Studio Trail is the feature event of the Southern Highlands Arts Festival, a time to celebrate and enjoy all of the creative opportunities in the region – galleries, exhibitions, music, theatre, arts shopping and workshops. The 2015 Art Studio Trail is the biggest one ever with 38 studios opening their doors featuring
the work of more than 50 artists and makers and including fifteen new studios. Visitors will be able to meet the artists, see their work in the place it was created and purchase directly from the studio door. The artists participating in the trail include professional as well as emerging artists practising in many forms of art-making including painting, sculpture, aboriginal art, ceramics, jewellery, fibre art, botanical art, woodwork, fine furniture, textiles, photography, mosaics, painted tiles, printmaking and art conservation. For the past ten years Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre Incorporated has hosted a unique community event - DamFest. DamFest 2015 is a FREE event. It is a fun day for the whole family featuring: Community Fair, Car Show, Bike Show, ASRF Swap Meet, Displays by emergency services (NSW Police, NSW Fire & Rescue, RFS, National Parks & Wildlife), Animal Farm, Live Entertainment, Market stalls, Amusement Rides, Tug-of-war and more. the Warragamba Silverdale area, provide a fund raising opportunity for local community groups and organisations, give car and bike enthusiasts a showcase for their vehicles and raise funds for the Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre (WSNC), a not-for-profit association with proceeds of the day being directed back into the community with particular focus on programs to engage and develop youth. The DamFest Organising committee comprises a member of WSNC and a number of volunteers. Together with many local businesses the volunteers donate their time, expertise and sponsorship to the event. In addition we seek sponsorship support from corporations in the form of financial assistance or in-kind contributions to help cover the expenses. In 2014 DamFest attracted approximately 10,000 visitors and had around 100 volunteers helping out. Corbett Gardens 15 - 27 September As one of Australia’s oldest flower festivals, Tulip Time brings tens of thousands of visitors from across the country to our region. Bowral’s Corbett Gardens will again be massplanted with over 75,000 tulips and 16,500 annuals with an additional 35,000 tulips planted in parks in Mittagong and Moss Vale. This year Garvan Research Foundation, will be Tulip Time’s charity partner. The Foundation is the marketing and fundraising arm of the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, a worldleading institute, pioneering study into some of the most widespread diseases affecting our community today. will feature Garvan’s outstanding supporters, Samuel and Connie Johnson from the Love Your Sister campaign as joint Ambassadors. The Highlands Theatre Group-Then And Now. The Highlands Theatre Group has a reputation for producing quality, affordable entertainment that dates well back into the last century and it is one that continues today. Just in this year alone, they will have completed four stage productions, including a major musical by Rodgers and Hammerstein, ‘Oklahoma!’ which involved a cast of forty, a twenty five piece orchestra and a volunteer stage crew of twenty! Prior to this in February, the Agatha Christie mystery, ‘A Murder Is Announced’, opened at The Mittagong Playhouse, leaving fans of the super sleuth Miss Marple, well and truly satisfied that justice had indeed been done. Later in August, at the same venue, Sir Ronald Harwood’s very funny, yet rather poignant play ‘Quartet’ touched audiences with the cast’s sensitive portrayal of four once famous opera singers, residing in a retirement home, as they each try to come to terms with their lost youth and past glory.
After a slight change of plan, discussions regarding the Highlands Theatre Group’s final production for the year are well underway and details will soon be made available, so keep checking your local newspapers for all relevant notices. Next year will be no less busy for the group, which is run entirely by a dedicated band of volunteers and operates as a not for profit organisation. Berrima is a historic village offering a day tripper the most wonderful array of food and shopping experiences in a living history environment. It is a favourite destination for Sydneysiders and Illawarra and Canberra residents and has exquisite boutique shopping, antiques and great food. Established as a township in 1831, Berrima is a preserved Australian, Georgian, colonial town. It is located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River. In the 19thC, the township was destined to become the main town of the Southern Highlands, but when the railway line was built through Moss Vale in the 1860s, it faded to a sleepy village. 32 www.monthlyimag.com.au
The first Europeans to investigate the area were sent by the colonial governor, Governor Hunter. With a water supply provided by the nearby Wingecarribee River, a town plan, in the manner of an English village, was laid out by Robert Hoddle. Few substantial houses were built, although by the 1850s sturdy Anglican and Catholic churches replaced the original wattle and daub versions. Licensed since 1834, the Surveyor-General Inn, in the centre of town, is the longest licensed hotel in NSW. By the 1960s, the preservation of old Georgian buildings became of national importance to our heritage, so the entire village of Berrima was declared a historic village by the National Trust. The most interesting period in the history of Berrima is perhaps when it became an internment camp for enemy aliens and POWs during WW1. The Courthouse Museum and Berrima Gaol are still two impressive sandstone buildings which every visitor must see. Until a few years ago the gaol was still used as a prison. Berrima is said to be a word from the language of the Dharawal people meaning ‘Black Swan’. The Dharawal were displaced in the area by farming and grazing interests and were rarely seen by the 1870s.

Robertson Open Gardens 10 - 11 October Robertson Springtime Open Gardens 2015 will be held on the weekend of October 10th and 11th with eight beautiful gardens open to the public. This year we have four new stunning gardens to see, all large gardens close to the village. The gardens will be open from 9.30am to 4pm on both days. Tickets to the gardens will be available at the CTC in Robertson on the main road (Illawarra Highway), where a poster display of the gardens and descriptions can be seen. Tickets valid over both days are $5 per garden, $20.00

Stop and browse at the Robertson Garden Club’s plant stall where you can buy many of the plants seen in the gardens. Other attractions in Robertson include a botanical art display at the Light Horse Gallery, Pop Up shops of fabulous garden tools by Estate Gardens and art work by local artists Regina Brewster and Pamela Voisey, as well as wooden craft at the Robertson Village Woodworks; antique shops and collectables, cafes and the local market on Sunday. Picnic among the beautiful Waratahs at the Heritage Railway station where there will be Waratah plants and blooms for sale, and the Fettler’s Shed Gallery and museum will be open. Visit Robertson’s Nature Reserve where you can wander through remnants of Yarrawa brush and rainforest. This year proceeds from the Open Gardens will go to The Robertson Show Society and Ladies Auxillary, The CTC and The Robertson School of Arts. Gardens open at 9.30am - 4.00pm on both days. Robertson is the lushest of the Southern
Highlands landscapes and is renowned for its rich volcanic soil in which potatoes are grown for the NSW market. Potatoes were the first crops planted in Robertson when a large parcel of land was cleared in the mid 19C. It could be said that this was due to the prevalence of landholders with an Irish background. Robertson’s development followed the usual pattern of rural towns with churches, cricket and football teams, schools, school of arts and agricultural societies. Macquarie Pass, linking the Highlands to the coast was such a brilliant spectacle that Robertson soon became the eastern gateway to the Highlands. Local businessmen, eager to capitalise on the town’s potential, brought the attractions of the area to general attention; the waterfalls, gorges and lush countryside. Each October, the Robertson Railway Station Gardens are ablaze with the most spectacular
display of flowering waratahs in NSW. Visitors can stroll through the gardens any time and purchase a bunch from the Fettlers Shed. The building known as ‘The Cheese Factory’ is a ‘must see’ in Robertson as it now houses a collection of shops offering cheese, gifts, craft, collectables and a cafe. The Illawarra Fly turns exploring the cliff tops into a great adventure with treetop walkways, a soaring tower, a Zipline and sweeping coastal vistas from Port Kembla to Kiama. The village is delighful but as well is an ideal base from which to explore a spectacular hinterland; it is recognized as the “green heart” of the Southern Highlands. It is a great place to use as a base when exploring the Highlands, close to national parks and half way between the coast and plains. It is within easy reach of delightful towns which are all great places to wander, stop for something to eat and browse through little shops and galleries.

The 64th Lilac City Festival 3 - 5 October 2015 On Saturday, Sunday and Monday of the long weekend, 3 to 5 October, Goulburn, Australia’s oldest inland city, celebrates its 64th Lilac City Festival. The Festival is the longest continuous running Festival in New South Wales. As Goulburn welcomes Spring, most of the events are based around Belmore Park, in the centre of town. For three days there is an abundance of events and entertainment for adults and children. The official opening at Belmore Park is on Saturday 3 October at 1.30pm where presentation of the citizen and achiever awards and festival baby will be announced. On Friday afternoon the fun starts with the Joyland Carnival Rides with two hour armbands running until Monday afternoon. On Saturday you can enjoy the Markets and entertainment in the park with Mountain Dew Band and Jamie Agius. As well, there will be Fireworks at Seiffert Oval on Saturday Night
with an appearance from the ever popular Humphrey Bear and entertainment by Norm McMillan. On Saturday night there is a family bush dance with called dances at the St Saviours Church Hall featuring a traditional bush band and dancers. On Sunday, there is free entertainment in Belmore Park and the Collectables and Antique Fair with vintage clothing and various displays in the Goulburn Soldiers Club from 10:00am to 4:00pm. On Monday the prizes for the garden competition will be awarded followed by an auction with lots of great items then the ever popular pet parade with lots of prizes for all the entrants. Sculptural Felt International: We Felt Like Crossing Borders… is an international travelling 3D felt exhibition, in which the works do not only cross borders of countries but also the technical boundaries of traditional felt making by combining it with other techniques, shapes or materials. Flora Non Evidens, on display until 27 September, is an installation by Karen Richards of rare and endangered plants from Australia’s East. Embroidered and knitted using light reflective thread and viewed with a head torch these plants appear to hover in space like ghosts of themselves which considering how near they are to extinction they may soon be.
