Where inspiration beams, the community shines and the trees are more than what they appear to be. Sacred Tree Markets is a unique culmination from a talented Energetic Healer/Teacher and a well respected member of the local wine industry. Both passionate about the Hunter Valley, good food, great times, happy kids, beautiful things and seeing people shine in their element. After countless hours traveling outside of their local community to visit numerous markets, sisters-in-law Penny Nowland and Ganga Ma, felt a desire to pull together their passion for the boutique, artisan and eclectic with their love of great food, wine, fresh produce and to see it being “home grown” in their local area. www.sacredtreemarkets.com.au

Get ready to plant your garlic! It’s getting cooler in April and the garlic seed will want to sprout, so it’s time to get your soil and seeds prepared. Hopefully, your soil is already well conditioned with natural organic material such as mixed-in compost. If not, it’s not too late to add and mix in well. Soil should be slightly sandy to allow garlic bulbs to expand but not too sandy so the water seeps through too quickly. A sandy loam is best, with a good drainage. Peel your garlic bulbs into individual cloves, which are now the seeds. Just pop them into the soil with the pointy tip up and to a depth where the pointy tip is just visible. Skin can stay on or come off; it doesn’t matter. Plant seeds about 20-25 cm apart. Mulch in well to keep weeds out. Mix in with fertiliser like blood ‘n’ bone, and mix in with a seaweed solution. I like to add worm juice, too. Keep adding these every two weeks for at least three months. You should see the seeds sprouting in about two-three weeks. Water in well and keep soil slightly moist until about two weeks before harvesting, when it should be kept dry. All things being equal, you should grow lovely, fresh, aromatic garlic! Good luck!! For recipes or info, visit: www.huntervalleygarlic.com.au
Fresh Eggs, Cucumbers, Tomatos, Relish, Passionfruits, Plums… all shared by generous friends, family and neighbours in the last week. Nothing helps build a sense of community more than the sharing of homegrown and homemade. Handpicked juicy plums from a neighbour’s 2 abundantly fruitful backyard plum trees were unexpectedly delivered and brightened our day. Fruit and veg that may not be perfectly uniform but taste like they should. I have clear memories of preserving jars in the kitchen cupboards, throwing kitchen scraps to the chooks, the delight of wriggling a carrot top in the garden and pulling it out, cracking macadamias in the vice in my grandpa’s shed and peeking under leaves looking for fresh strawberries to eat warm off the bush. When did our food become so shrink wrapped and packaged up with long expiry dates? It’s easy to feel disconnected from food when it comes this way. I wonder if our children know if a plum grows on a tree and a carrot in the ground? Have they ever cracked a nut from it’s shell? Discover the pleasure of eating real food close to the source. What simple goodness can you grow or bake to share?

What to buy, where to eat and drink This region is packed with great places to eat, fabulous wineries and speciality shops to tempt the tastebuds. Food lovers come from all over the region come back time and again to enjoy firm favourites or purchase special occasion foods and wines. The region is home to many markets, some just purely farmers markets or other a mixture of fresh produce and other treasures. See our pages 2 and 3 for more market information. The Hunter Valley is famous for its boutique wineries and some favourites are Camyr Allyn near Gresford (their Sparkling Rose is delicious) and Adina Vineyard in Lovedale, both very helpful when it comes to finding “just the right wine” for you. There are large and small olive groves here too, buyers can purchase olives and olive oil products from Pukara Estate or Tintilla Estate, and if you are visiting Gresford then take the time to stop in at the picturesque Bunna Bunoo Olive Grove. If you have special dietary needs then gluten free options include Cupz n Crepes in Morpeth or Bolwarra General Store and Café. For the health conscious, Goodness Me Organics in Adamstown - a one-stop shop for all your regular organic grocery needs as well as the chance for a cuppa in the café once the shopping is done. Newcastle is a great venue for dining out. Award winning Chinois in King Street is a must for chinese food lovers and if you want a more European flavour then head over to La Belle Epoque where we can heartily recommend the traditional French style dishes. Your culinary journey doesn’t end there - Lovedale in the Hunter is home to many boutique wineries and speciality restaurants – for chocolate monsters a stop at Sabor in the Hunter Dessert Bar is an absolute must. Last but not least – if like us you love your cheese then you will love a visit to Gourmet or Glutton in Morpeth. Be warned! It is cheese heaven with so many to choose from it can be hard to make your mind up.

Newcastle Beaches Newcastle is well-known for its stunning coastline and it is one of the few cities in the world that can say it has eight beaches within five minutes of its city centre. Nobbys, Newcastle, Bar, Dixon Park and Merewether Beach, just to name a few, are attractive must-see locations for any visitor to the city. June 2007 storms thrust Nobbys Beach into the International spotlight after the grounding of the massive Pasha Bulker cargo ship on its shores. A monument to the event stands at Nobbys Beach and is a stop off point for visitors and locals alike. Nearby is the Harbour break-wall and Nobby’s Lighthouse, perfect for that afternoon stroll and the ideal vantage point to watch 300m cargo ships come into port. Newcastle Beach is known for being one of the best surf locations in Australia along with Merewether
Beach, home to the annual International Surfest competition. Adjacent are the Merewether Baths, the largest ocean bath complex in the Southern Hemisphere – there is nothing else like this facility in Australia. The bath is a favourite for locals of a warm summer’s day and ideal for lap swimmers all year round. One of the city’s most outstanding historic landmarks is the Newcastle Ocean Baths. With its art deco architecture and picturesque views of the ocean, the bath has long been an icon of the Newcastle coastline. Adjacent to the ocean bath is Newcastle Canoe Pool, which once featured a map of the world with small islands representing the continents. The shallow canoe pool is the perfect place for young children to swim in safety away from waves and surfers.
For Chinese Food Lovers!
A visit to Newcastle is not complete without a day on the beach. So grab a parcel of fish and chips and join the locals on the sand. Don’t forget to watch out for dolphins, a common sight off Newcastle’s beaches. To keep up with the weather, tides and surf check out @NDays on Twitter!

hilltoharbour
Sunday 7th April Newcastle The Annual Hill2Harbour lineup will include the addition of a new race, the Newcastle Fort5- a friendly 5km race for competitors of all fitness levels. The Fort5 will start next to the Fort and join the already popular 2KforKids, 10km and 21km courses. Due to the huge popularity of the Herald Hill2Harbour in recent years, and the addition of the new distance, event organizers feel that the next step will be the formation of an annual Newcastle Running Festival. The Herald Hill2Harbour will continue to run under the banner of the Newcastle Running Festival, complete with all of its usual friendly competition and encouraging atmosphere. Event Director Paul Humphreys stated that the move to incorporate the Herald Hill2Harbour into a new Newcastle Running Festival provides many benefits that will help establish Newcastle as “a go to destination for national runners.” It is the hope that the addition of courses such as the Fort5 will encourage novice athletes and competitors of all fitness levels to enter. Mr. Humphreys stated today: “We just hope that people will get in and have a go. Running is a sport anybody can get involved in.”

Cessnock & Kurri Kurri Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast. Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland. During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the

last twenty years. Consequently many areas have undergone a change in character, with rural residential housing development and weekend retreats becoming popular. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convictbuilt Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures.
What to see and do in Kurri Kurri ■ Kurri Kurri is famous for its murals, which are a wonderful expression of the region’s history. Tours are available all year round. Kurri Kurri is the biggest mural town in Australia. Don’t forget to look for the Kookaburra in every mural – some are quite hard to find. To book a tour contact the VIC on 4936 1909. ■ Richmond Vale Railway Museum runs trains on the first three Sundays of each month from 10am. ■ Kurri Kurri farmer’s market is held the second Saturday of each month.

Explore the majestic world of Australian landscapes through the eyes one of its foremost artists, Shay Docking, at a new exhibition Maitland Regional Art Gallery during April and into May. Songs of Earth and Sea curated by Macquarie University's Rhonda Davis and Leonard Janiszewski, reflects the way Docking represented nature and landscape as intrinsically linked to our evolving natural identity. Her unique vision, coupled with her intense study of volcanoes and angaphora trees, offers new readings of the Australian environment. Shay Docking (1955 – 1996) grew up in Victoria and studied at the Swinburne Technical College. As a dedicated landscape painter, she drew her main inspiration from the Western District of Victoria where she was raised. Seeing nature as both savage and beautiful, she channeled her creativity into intensive landscape painting while travelling throughout Victoria. Later, while living in Auckland, New Zealand, the extinct volcanoes of the area inspired a large body of paintings and pencil drawings that explored in depth the volcano as a metaphor. Song of Earth and Sea: Shay Docking 1955 – 1996 runs from 22 March to 12 May Visit www.mrag.org.au for details.

The Allyn & Paterson River Valley Tocal - Paterson - Vacy - East Gresford - Gresford There is a lot on offer for visitors to the Allyn & Paterson River Valley, just two and a half hours’ drive from Sydney, an hour from Newcastle and where Dr Henry Lindeman planted his first grape vines in 1843. Here you will discover the geographically blessed towns of Paterson, Vacy, Gresford and East Gresford, ringed by the ancient Moonabung Ranges and criss-crossed by the pristine waters of the two rivers that flow from the Barrington Tops. First stop could be historic Tocal Homestead for tales of the olden days of bushrangers, graziers, and other characters who inhabited one of the greatest Australian cattle and horse studs of its time. Have a look at the rare architect-designed barn built around 1867, and the gracious Colonial Georgian country house. Tocal Homestead is a very popular venue for
weddings and milestone celebrations. Paterson has inspired many artists to pick up a brush to try to capture this picturesque Australian country town on canvas. Take the time to look at the many fine old homes, grand commercial buildings, museums, art gallery, pubs, cafes, parks and shops that contribute to Paterson’s unique style. 9km north of Paterson is Vacy, with rugged Mt George to the west. It is well worth a visit to the café, hotel, arts & crafts shop and general store for a taste of country hospitality, great food and quirky crafts. Travel over the Vacy bridge, circa 1898, to Bunna Bunoo olive grove and gift shop. You can see the roof tops of the cabins and lodges such as Banjos Bushland Retreat and Cabins in the Clouds on Mt George, perfect destinations for weekend getaways or a longer stay.
The small towns of Gresford and East Gresford are the gateway to Lostock Dam, Mt Allyn and the Chichester State Forest to the north. Take the Allyn River Road drive past homesteads set among rolling green hills and granite outcrops. Visit Clevedon craft shop, Natural Furniture Works, the Beatty Hotel and Camyr Allyn winery. History lovers will enjoy a drive to St Anne’s Anglican Church and suspension bridge, and St Mary’s on Allyn at Allynbrook. For information visit www.apvt.com.au

Saturday 30th March is race day in the usually quiet country village of Gresford, in the foothills of the Barrington tops. The main street is closed off and the gravity powered billy carts take over. Last year’s Derby saw many innovative billy cart designs including Batman and Batmobile - the winner of the best dressed cart - and Goldspring’s Excavator cart driven by Bob Baldwin MP. Emily Jane Foote reigns as Grand Champion after her dash in the stainless steel bullet. Her record time of 20.75 seconds will be hard to break. This year’s Easter Fair and Billy Cart Derby will aid Junior Education in Gresford with
the main beneficiaries to be the Gresford Pre-School and Gresford Public School. There is still time for you to get ready with a billy cart entry! For all design information go to the website:www. gresfordbillycartderby.wordpress.com

Singleton - Muswellbrook - Denman - Merriwa - Cassilis - Murrurundi - Scone - Aberdeen UNCOVERING THE ARTS IN THE LAND OF COAL: Coal Mining in Muswellbrook reaches back well over 100 years. Tough men, lean and sinewy with calloused hands, picked their way through the dark and dangerous underground caves, sending their daily spoils to minehead. But there was another side to many. Art, music, poetry, drama and literature were as much of their lives as the blackness of the underground mine. The School of Arts provided the space and facilities to learn about language, words, poetry and literature. Travelling musicians and actors presented the locals with a taste of theatre, drama and classical music. The School of Arts has since been transformed into the Muswellbrook Regional Arts Centre which now houses a vast collection of works from around the world and by local artists. Muswellbrook art legend and underground coal miner,
Max Watters has donated his unique collection to the community and a section of the Art Centre named in his honour presents an ever changing display of both Max’s works and those from his personal collection. The Art Centre has a busy exhibition programme throughout the year highlighted by the annual Muswellbrook Art Prize open to artists from around Australia;the NAIDOC Week Aboriginal Art Award and the Muswellbrook Local Art Award are open to all artists throughout the Upper Hunter. Muswellbrook Amateur Theatrical Society (MATS) has been producing and presenting drama and musicals for over 50 years. Potters gather at the local ceramics group at the Pothouse; emerging and experienced artists take up the challenge at the Artists’ Shootout at the Annual Creative Arts Fair. Autumn 2013 sees the 22nd annual Muswellbrook & Upper Hunter Eisteddfod when 100s of adults and children local, regional
and from inter-state, compete in one of the most prestigious performing arts programmes in NSW. The Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music based in Muswellbrook provides opportunities for over 600 students. Muswellbrook’s modern Library hosts a series of book launches and writers‘ workshops. The pavilion at the Upper Hunter Show held at Muswellbrook each year is filled each year with 100s of works of art by school kids and adults and this year our community has introduced the inaugural Blue Heeler Film Festival with Short Film competitions for film makers of all ages, junior section, senior section and open section. The Film Festival will be held throughout Muswellbrook Shire from 14th – 21st April 2013. Come along and enjoy the world of art at Muswellbrook - we’re not just big trucks, mud covered 4WD utes and draglines. For more information contact Muswellbrook Visitor Information Centre.
