’S

You might be forgiven for driving past Entice Café on Ken Tubman Drive in Maitland, we almost don’t want to tell you about it as it’s our little secret….. The café is part of the Quest Apartments building. There is no parking outside the café, so the O T I R main car park is a good idea as D it is just over the road. The café itself is bright, clean om and fresh and the service has m enda always been incredibly warm and welcoming. We first started going there a year ago when our pup was just a few months old as we can sit in the covered courtyard at the front. We now have two dogs and they are always made to feel as welcome as we are. The menu is quite varied, although we confess, the burger and hot chips is a firm favourite. We are creatures of habit! Of course you don’t just have to have breakfast or lunch – with great coffee and tea available and a selection of sweet things we’ve seen many people just drop in for a natter over a slice. It’s our favourite bolt hole in Maitland. We can’t fault the friendly service, good food and central location. They’re open in the evenings too!

PET FRIENDLY

Pickled & Pitted Nestled comfortably into the country atmosphere of the tiny Hunter Valley town of Broke you will find a small cottage called Pickled and Pitted, a specialty shop manufacturing and selling quality handmade relishes, chutneys, pickles, olive oils and more. The history of this quaint little store begins with owner Marion, as it was her ambition to create her very own range of olive oils, and her son who would go on to plant the 3000 odd olive trees at their Hunter Valley property. The period in which Marion waited for the trees to start bearing fruit, was also astutely spent manufacturing a collection of gourmet foods that were designed to compliment the olive oil range once the fruit was ready. The flavours of Marion’s oils are praised as “to die for” as the process of collecting the fruit, jarring and labelling are all done by hand, helping to give the produce a fresh, profusely flavoured taste. As well hosting a delicious array of gourmet foods, Pickled and Pitted also sells a range of skincare products and Olive Oil Soaps (BARE Nature’sKin), additionally being handmade by Marian’s daughter Michelle, providing the shared space with a unique and original fragrance. Pickled and Pitted is a must on any traveller’s list of places to visit in the Hunter Valley, with a friendly and inviting atmosphere and the promise of being told kitchen recipe secrets to all that drop in. WIN!

4 tickets to give away!

4 tickets to Jump Jump Star with The Fairies in Newcastle ‘Jump Jump Star’ is the brand new live show from much-loved Australian children’s entertainment phenomenon, The Fairies! The show will make its New South Wales debut on Saturday July 5 at 11am at the Panthers. ‘Jump Jump Star’ has children singing and dancing from the first sparkle of glitter and the fun, music and magic is boundless for the hourlong performance. Best fairy friends Harmony & Rhapsody stretch their wings and warm up their wands as they show Barnaby, Elf and Wizzy just what it takes to be a real true fairy! Brand new songs include ‘Fairy Hi’, ‘Dancing Fairy’ and ‘Real True Fairy’ and the appearance of a surprise friend when Wizzy’s magic goes wonky has had our young audience giggling for days!

The Fairies are classically trained ballet dancers, and their “en pointe” ballet medley is truly beautiful, while Elf the Fairy Cake Maker has traversed the world dancing for the likes of Kesha and many other famous performers, and as he choreographed the whole show, has made sure the dancing is simple enough for children to dance along with, while so spectacular the audience is left marveling at how great Fairyland dancers really are! We have 4 tickets to give away! To enter all you need to do is email us at admin@monthlyimag.com.au with your contact details and the words “The Fairies in Newcastle” as the subject line. The winners name will be drawn on 3rd July at 3pm and the winners will be notified by email.

Rabbit Hole

by Nigel Lindsay Abaire 2007 Pulitzer Prize Winner Rabbit Hole is a play about a bereaved family but the characters we meet are highly functional, unsentimental, spirited and often funny as they try to work their way through their grief and around each other. It is not a sentimental play but it is a play with much humanity. Under the direction of Kathleen Warren and Assistant director Lynda Rennie, five talented cast members, Sue McEwen, Amanda Woolford, Emily Ralph, Drew Pittman and Heathcliff Stubley bring to life five people who must deal with a situation that has overwhelmed their lives. Rabbit Hole opens Saturday 12th July at 8pm and plays through to 26th July 2014 with two 2pm matinee performances Sunday 13th & Saturday 19th July.

Kurri Kurri & Cessnock to Wollombi

A rich wine growing area During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convict-built Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures. 26

Greta Migrant Camp: Displaced/ Assimilation & Stereoscopic Views Artwork by Vivienne Dadour & Gail Burrows

4 July – 21 September An exhibition of multi-media by two artists: Vivienne Dadour & Gail Burrows. The artists give voice to the experiences of displaced European immigrants who lived in ex-army barracks at Greta between 1949-1960, the site north of Maitland at the core of this project. This camp became the home to thousands of people displaced by war-torn Europe in a massive immigration program between 1949-1960 . Vivienne Dadour and Gail Burrows share the story of these families and their history of assimilation into our country. Vivienne Dadour has extensively researched the history of the site and has documented it in its current state through photography. Gail Burrows work complements Dadour’s. Burrows has gathered images from each participants homes which reflect their place of origin. These images have informed her research and understanding of assimilation and value of heritage. She creates stark black and white ink images from historical photos from Greta which stand in contrast to the rich colours of large scale needle work, applique inspired by ethnic needle work sourced from participants in this project. Her work expresses narratives of loss and hope, richness of culture making transition into a new culture, validating the experience of European immigrants and their contribution to our Australian way of life. This unique exhibition speaks to the history of Maitland and the Hunter Valley and not to be missed! The Allyn & Paterson River Valley Tocal, Paterson, Vacy, East Gresford & Gresford Just two and a half hours’ drive from Sydney, an hour from Newcastle, you will discover the towns of Paterson, Vacy, Gresford and East Gresford, ringed by the ancient Moonabung Ranges and criss-crossed by the pristine waters of the two rivers that flow from the Barrington Tops. First stop could be historic Tocal Homestead for tales of the olden days of bushrangers, graziers who inhabited one of the greatest Australian cattle and horse studs of its time. Have a look at the rare architect-designed barn built around 1867, and the gracious Colonial Georgian country house. Tocal Homestead is a very popular venue for weddings and milestone celebrations. Paterson has inspired many artists to pick 40

up a brush to try to capture this picturesque Australian country town on canvas. The fine old homes, grand commercial buildings, museums, art gallery, pubs, cafes, parks and shops contribute to Paterson’s unique style. Vacy is well worth a visit for a taste of country hospitality, great food and quirky crafts. Travel over the Vacy bridge, circa 1898, to Bunna Bunoo olive grove and gift shop. The small towns of Gresford and East Gresford are the gateway to Lostock Dam, Mt Allyn and the Chichester State Forest to the north. Take the Allyn River Road drive past homesteads set among rolling green hills and granite outcrops. Visit Clevedon craft shop, Natural Furniture Works, the Beatty Hotel and Camyr Allyn winery. History lovers will enjoy a drive to St Anne’s Anglican Church and suspension bridge, and St Mary’s on Allyn at Allynbrook. For more information on the area visit www.apvt.com.au
