Tasting in the Hunter

Catherine Vale Vineyard

Catherine Vale Vineyard in the Broke Fordwich Sub-region of the Hunter Valley was established by Bill & Wendy Lawson in 1993. Initial plantings were of the traditional Hunter whites Semillon and Chardonnay. In 1998 the red Italian varieties Dolcetto and Barbera were planted and again with further shifts in varietal preferences the Portuguese variety Verdelho and the Italian varietal Arneis were grafted onto existing wines. Bill and Wendy work tirelessly with a “hands on” approach to their vines and their product, mindful of environmental care and quality in the production of their fruit. The main outlet for their wines is the Anderson Room with BBQ facilities and Bocce Courts available. Catherine Vale is open on weekends, public holidays or by appointment. The only privately owned bakery in a gaol Blackbird Artisan Bakery is a tiny rustic business teaching old world cooking skills to new age apprentices. We make long cold ferment sour dough, totally handmade. Our bread is low GI, low fat and simply delicious. We work in conjunction with Flinders Ranges Premium Grain – a tiny collective of 5 farms, 4 families in the lowest rainfall, most marginal wheat belt in Australia. Flinders Ranges Farmers produce a beautiful hard wheat which is well suited to artisan bread making. We deal directly with the farm and see first-hand the economic dynamics of this relationship. Our staff are about to enjoy professional development visits to the farms during harvest so they understand the journey that our grain makes from the paddock to the plate, from the grain to the flour to our daily bread. This unique partnership gives us total traceability, accountability and reliability. We are justifiably proud of the opportunity to work directly with the grower and to directly benefit their bottom line. To complement our Australian partnership we use a French Rye Flour which produces fantastic rye breads. Everything we do is handmade, high quality and designed to make your belly smile! Directed by David Murray (Co-Director of NTC’s 2013 production of Private Lives) with Assistant Director Amy Hill (2012 CONDA winning Co-Director of Twelfth Night at YPT).

Kurri Kurri & Cessnock to Wollombi A rich wine growing area During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convict-built Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures. 24

Kurri Kurri is famous for its Murals, they are a wonderful expression of our history and region, and tours are available all year round, we have many coach groups coming into town to view these amazing outdoor artworks and are proud to be the biggest Mural town in Australia. There are now over 50 murals, making Kurri Kurri the largest mural town in Australia. New murals are currently underway. Don't forget to look for the kookaburra in every mural, some are quite difficult to find. To book a tour, enquire about projects contact the Kurri Kurri VIC 4936 1909.

Heritage Tours: Heritage Tours consist of an introductory film followed by a walking tour taking in the heritage room, museum, convent, chapel, chancel and gardens and, if time permits, the Sisters' historic cemetery. Commentary from trained volunteer guides. A Day to Treasure: There is a particular intimacy in marrying in the beautiful Convent Chapel as all have an uninterrupted view of the ceremony. Spaces for all Occasions: The Convent holds the potential to host a variety of activities in its large and small rooms, chapel, cloisters and gardens. It possesses a unique heritage atmosphere but lends itself to adaptation according to need. Every effort will be made to accommodate you in a spirit of warm hospitality.

Vicki Varvaressos The Story So Far 10 October – 11 January 2015 Vicki Varvaressos is one of Australia’s leading established women painters. As a contemporary artist, Vicki Varvaressos emphasizes her inner feelings and emotions over objective depictions in highly personal colour choices and at the same time she takes the opportunity to express her attitude, sentiment and opinion. Over time she has developed imagery characterized by vivid, often angular or flowing simplified figures to the point of distortion of her subjects. The dramatic figures contrast with a limited palette, which at times result in crude and rather raw finishes. This technique adds almost an impossible intensity to her art and defines and marks it as uniquely hers. For Varvaressos the fragmentary nature of modern life evokes a disparate array of aesthetic responses. She paints with undisguised glee and actively searches her own feelings and story for the subject matter that becomes her art be it realistic or abstracted. She comments; ‘I paint the things that interest me, that’s what I’ve always done regardless; whatever the content. It’s what I’m involved in and what I’m interested in at “Thea and Maggie Taking Tea”, 1981, the time.’ 153x122 cms. Acrylic and material on canvas
