You might be forgiven for driving past Entice Café on Ken Tubman Drive in Maitland, we almost don’t want to tell you about it as it’s our little secret….. The café is part of the Quest Apartments building. There is no parking outside the café, so the O T I R main car park is a good idea as D it is just over the road. The café itself is bright, clean om and fresh and the service has m enda always been incredibly warm and welcoming. We first started going there a year ago when our pup was just a few months old as we can sit in the covered courtyard at the front. We now have two dogs and they are always made to feel as welcome as we are. The menu is quite varied, although we confess, the burger and hot chips is a firm favourite. We are creatures of habit! Of course you don’t just have to have breakfast or lunch – with great coffee and tea available and a selection of sweet things we’ve seen many people just drop in for a natter over a slice. It’s our favourite bolt hole in Maitland. We can’t fault the friendly service, good food and central location. They’re open in the evenings too!

Tasting in the Hunter
Tintilla Estate is a family-run, 25 acre vineyard in Pokolbin in the heart of the Hunter Valley wine growing area. Olive trees and woods flank the vineyard with its mosaic of vines planted to match the soils and slopes of the property, creating the unique terroir that produces the distinctive, individual, award-winning wines. Careful attention to the vineyard produces healthy grapes with optimal ripeness and varietal character. The low yielding vines produce rich and concentrated fruit with the acidity and tannins that lead to longevity with a softness derived from the Hunter climate. So why not pay Tintilla Estate a visit and try the Gold & Trophy winning wines with a cheese platter on the deck. Hidden delights in Clarence Town Who’d have guessed it? Tucked away in the pretty country town of Clarence Town, The restaurant at the Erringhi Hotel in Clarence Town is not your typical pub bistro. We dined there recently and were more than pleasantly surprised by the gorgeous décor and atmosphere (aided on a chilly winter’s night by the welcome of a real fire in the hearth), the friendly and efficient service and great, great food. We were presented with a varied, but not confusing menu, made with fresh produce. It was so refreshing to have a proper green salad (not out of a bag) and crunchy vegetables that hadn’t been cooked to within an inch of their lives to accompany a perfectly cooked steak and the best lamb shank we’ve had outside of Wales. It’s certainly one of the best meals we’ve had in a long time, we’ve already recommended it to friends and family and look forward to heading back soon. Although we didn’t get to see them, the hotel also has rooms which have also been recently refurbished – the reviews have all been good. Maybe next time we’ll order that second bottle of wine and treat ourselves to an overnight stay.

The Boys
by Gordon Graham Make no mistake – The Boys is a horror story. Not one that involve splatter and gore, but one that gets to the crux of what it means to be part of the Australian landscape and culture, and a horror story that exists in a suburb that’s a lot like yours, played out by people we bump into on the street every day of our lives.

HORSE RIDING
Unique and personalised Australian Horse Riding
Brett Sprague is home from jail. His brothers, his lover and his mother have been waiting, hoping that the reunion will be the start of something better and that they can begin again. Inspired by the all too real abduction, rape and murder of Anita Cobby in the mid-1980s, Graham Gordon's The Boys is an unflinching examination of a heinous crime. It is a seminal work of Australian theatre and an essential narrative in our national consciousness. The Boys delves headlong into the lives of a troubled family splintering under the weight of dysfunction and the hopelessness that pervades their existence. Shifting its focus between a tense, long-awaited afternoon reunion in the backyard of the Sprague family, to its devastating aftermath, the play puts us face to face with the nightmare lurking within the Australian dream. The Sprague family are a chilling reminder of the dark side of our larrikin, rebellious Australian identity.
The perfect balance of fun & safety, introducing people to the art of Horse Riding Offering a personalised experience for all. Chapman Valley Horse Riding is a family owned and run business, leading guided horse rides through the Australian Bush, incomparable to anything else in Australia. With a maximum of 6 people per session you can be sure you will experience a unique and personal horse riding adventure. Ride across sweeping flats, explore scenic valleys and climb majestic mountains, all of the massive 6,500 acre beef cattle farm. Great for beginners right up to experienced riders, there's something for everyone!

Kurri Kurri & Cessnock to Wollombi A rich wine growing area During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convict-built Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures. 24

October Exhibition at Cessnock Regional Gallery “Vineyard Vignettes” from the Newcastle Creative Embroiderers and Textile Artists will open on Wednesday 1st October and run until Sunday 26th. NCEATA is a group of Newcastle and Lower Hunter artists who came together over thirty years ago through their common love of fibres and textiles as mediums of artistic expression. They have shown together many times over the years but this is the first time that the Cessnock Regional Art Gallery has hosted one of their exhibitions. This group, which has very close ties to Cessnock, operates across a very wide range of traditional and innovative techniques to produce a dazzling array of textile art. There is wet and dry felting, braiding, knotting, wire and fibre weaving, paper fibre, beading, piecing, appliqué and so many other techniques represented. Vineyard Vignettes showcases the artwork that has resulted from this group engaging at a very personal level with the wineries of the Lower Hunter to produce an exhibition of immediate interest that will engage, surprise and delight everyone who sees it, whether local residents or the many visitors to the district. Experience the Convent: The outstanding aesthetic significance of the convent, and in particular its chapel, is enjoyed by the thousands of visitors from New South Wales and beyond who come to admire and enjoy it each year. The Convent of Mercy Singleton, in the heart of the Hunter Valley, is significant for its size, grandeur, uniqueness and architectural interest, as well as for the historic narrative that the site documents. While it encompasses some of the early local church history, the story of this convent is first and foremost the story of a dedicated, intelligent and enterprising group of women whose influence spread well beyond their established roots. Heritage Tours: Heritage Tours consist of an introductory film followed by a walking tour taking in the heritage room, museum, convent, chapel, chancel and gardens and, if time permits, the Sisters' historic cemetery. Commentary from trained volunteer guides. A Day to Treasure: There is a particular intimacy in marrying in the beautiful Convent Chapel as all have an uninterrupted view of the ceremony. Spaces for all Occasions: The Convent holds the potential to host a variety of activities in its large and small rooms, chapel, cloisters and gardens. It possesses a unique heritage atmosphere but lends itself to adaptation according to need. Every effort will be made to accommodate you in a spirit of warm hospitality.

Maitland Regional Art Gallery
Vicki Varvaressos Me, Myself, I
19 September – 11 January 2015 MRAG is delighted to host the retrospective of one of Australia’s leading women painters, Vicki Varvaressos. Vicki Varvaressos emphasizes her inner feelings and emotions over objective depictions in highly personal colour choices and at the same time she takes the opportunity to express her attitude, sentiment and opinion. Over time she has developed imagery characterized by vivid, often angular or flowing simplified figures to the point of distortion of her subjects. The dramatic figures contrast with a limited palette, which at times result in crude and rather raw finishes. This technique adds almost an impossible intensity to her art and defines and marks it as uniquely hers. For Varvaressos the fragmentary nature of modern life evokes a disparate array of aesthetic responses. She paints with undisguised glee and actively searches her own feelings and story for the subject matter that becomes her art be it realistic or abstracted. She comments; ‘I paint the things that interest me, that’s what I’ve always done regardless; whatever the content. It’s what I’m involved in and what I’m interested in at the time.’
