Hills & Hawkesbury In March 1788, Governor Arthur Phillip set off to find more suitable land for agriculture and travelled up the Hawkesbury River as far as Dangar Island. He returned the following year and navigated the river to a point upstream of Windsor. Governor Phillip and his party reached this area by boat on 6th July 1789 and named it Green Hills. He was impressed with

its farming potential and quickly arranged for food production to begin in order to relieve the shortages in Port Jackson. Governor Macquarie named the settlement Windsor in 1810. This was the start of the Hawkesbury Hills District, still a rich production area for food and a wonderful playground. Visit the Information Centres throughout the Hills Hawkesbury area for more

information. Surrounded by 10 National parks an hour’s drive from Sydney, the area provides a wide range of recreational pursuits. Encircled by noteworthy national parks - Dharug to the north and east, Yengo to the north-west, Cattai to the west, and Marramarra to the south Wisemans Ferry is a rustic village on one of the country's most famous waterways.

Summer sizzles out Late summer sees a rush of flowers at the Blue Mountains Botanic Garden as every plant seemingly wants to make the most of the rapidly shortening daylight. Look out for Lilium auratum and Lilium speciosum with large luminous flowers that smell strongly like jasmine. Tiger lilies are ablaze in golden yellow and burnt orange whilst waterlilies can be seen floating on the surface of the various pools and ponds throughout the northern section of the Garden. Bees abound in the Garden in late summer…the sound of intense buzzing draws the attention to one of the most unusual trees flowering… Kalopanax septemlobus. This tree has beautiful almost tropical foliage and interesting spines on its stems. It flowers prolifically and the flowers, although quite small, are on such a mass to look almost like a purple haze above the foliage. Vying for the bees attention are the leatherwoods, Eucryphia moorei. These beautiful white flowered trees are the source of the delicious leatherwood honey and the petals often surround the trees in a shallow pool of white. As the weather cools, bulbs begin to emerge from their long summer dormancy. Often the first signs are the beautiful ‘Naked Ladies’, Ammarylis belladonna. We are fortunate to have some of the colour forms here. Other bulbs that perform in February are Zephyrathes and Habranthus sp. They can come in white, pink and coppery colours, often appearing straight after rain. They are often called rain lilies. The very first of the nerines also flower in late summer. They are bright colours in reds and hot pink, with the cooler colours to follow.

Parramatta - Penrith

Parramatta was founded in 1788 by Governor Arthur Phillip as a western outlying farm colony of Sydney. Initially it was called Rose Hill and was renamed Parramatta, an Aboriginal word meaning “head of waters,” or “the place where eels lie down”, the year after it was proclaimed a town in 1790. It was incorporated as a municipality in 1861, became a city in 1938 and was expanded in 1948, 1959, and 1972 by the inclusion of surrounding centres.

Port Jackson harbour. The Parramatta River Cat ferry takes passengers from Parramatta to Sydney along the River. The River Cat is a scenic and relaxing way to explore the waterways . Mid Mountains There are many reasons to stop and stay in the Mid Mountains. We offer five towns to discover and explore. Lawson has slowly risen like a phoenix and reclaimed her place as a major stopover. After vital redevelopment of the highway, the town centre had to be rebuilt. There are still some vacancies in the new shopping complex, but those that are occupied are humming. As Lawson now has eleven food businesses, you will certainly find a cuisine to suit your taste. From takeaway to fine dining, Chinese to Chocolate, pop in and be spoilt for choice. On 21 February you can visit the Magpie Markets, being held at the Lawson Public School on the highway for great bargains and food. Lawson has more waterfalls than any other town, perfectly placed to enjoy the coolness of shaded tracks. The Empire Pass Track passes through temperate rainforest in North Lawson. South Lawson Waterfall Circuit is three kilometres long and includes four very different waterfalls: Adelina Falls, Federal Falls, Cataract Falls and Junction Falls. There are also many Fire Trails throughout the area, which were once open to vehicles, but have been closed and now only walkers and cyclists enjoy the wide well maintained dirt roads.

Botanical Art

Your dog’s day

Botanical Art is the Blue Mountains’ newest florist, located in Lawson’s new shopping village. Approaching their first birthday in February, they have spent the past year establishing a reputation as a one-stop shop for fresh flowers, living plants and small gifts. The shop is located on the lower level of the complex, with a variety of unique floral arrangements and gifts available to treat yourself or a loved one. These professionally trained florists personally hand-pick their fresh flowers from the markets three times a week, so you can be assured of their quality and freshness. Their local gift range includes cards from Alison Dickin, tea blends from the Blue Mountains Tea Company, natural soaps by the Natural Soap Emporium as well as a range of scented soy wax candles. Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, so don’t forget to place your order early – delivery is available within the Mid Mountains and beyond. View their floral range available for local delivery by visiting their website at www.botanical-art. com.au. Or have flowers sent interstate or internationally via the Petals or Direct2Florist networks. Call 4759 2747 or visit the shop to explore the floral possibilities.

Responsible dog ownership revolves around exercising your dog. Don’t leave your dog at home when you visit the Mid Mountains. If your dogs are social you can take them to the Lawson Dog Off-Leash Area. It is a large exercise area for dogs of all breeds, sizes and ages at the former golf course site at Lawson. Well-socialised and exercised dogs make better canine companions. It’s also wonderful place to meet likeminded people. Friendships between dogs are forged every day as new dogs are met by the regular dogs with

Wentworth Falls

www.bluemountainsimag.com.au

Yester Grange Estate Wentworth Falls, one of the most beautiful Blue Mountains towns, offers possibly the most spectacular bushwalks and views. Originally called ‘Weatherboard’ after the ‘Weatherboard Hut’ built in 1814, a year later the town was named ‘Jamison’s Valley’ by Governor Macquarie. In July 1867 the historic first railway journey in the Blue Mountains left Penrith station and travelled through to Weatherboard Station where the train terminated. It wasn’t until 1879 that the name was changed to Wentworth Falls in honour of William Charles Wentworth. When travelling from Bullaburra to Wentworth Falls you ascend Boddington Hill. At the top of Boddington hill, turn left into Tableland Road then left into Queen Elizabeth Drive. Take the left hand fork at the end for a 10 km drive to one of the most remote and beautiful picnic grounds in the Blue

Mountains, Ingar Picnic Ground. The area known as ‘Kings Tableland’ offers almost haunting views. Care must be taken within this area to preserve the ancient Aboriginal site, Kings Table. It has been calculated via carbon dating that the land was occupied some 22,000 years ago!

What to See & Do

Enjoy the fabulous sunsets from the Conservation Hut. With the numerous spectacular walks and views within Wentworth Falls, visitors should allow at least a day to enjoy the area at leisure. From Falls Road start the Charles Darwin Walk. The Darwin walk is well sign posted leading from the Great Western Highway, and along Falls Road. Explore Wentworth Falls Village with its shops, golf course and Lake on the northern side of the Highway.

Yester Grange is the Blue Mountains premier venue for couples seeking a truly unique wedding and special events venue. Nestled in 10 acres of totally private parkland and garden at the top of Wentworth Falls waterfall. The rolling expanse of green lawn reaches from the magnificent Victorian mansion, to touch the thousands of hectares of World Heritage Listed Blue Mountains Wilderness that lies beyond. The views are breathtaking and the atmosphere will leave your guests spellbound! Yester Grange is a truly unique property and no amount of words or photographs can ever do it justice. It is a venue which simply must be inspected to be believed. Inspections strictly by appointment only. Please phone to arrange a convenient time for us to show you around the property and to discuss menu selection and arrangements for your very special day. New Katoomba Street Art Gallery Open Mayor Mark Greenhill officially opened an exciting new gallery space in Katoomba on 7 November with Councillor Don McGregor, describing the new gallery as a “gift to Katoomba”, owned by local residents Sharon and Victor Peralta. Visit Gallery ONE88 Fine Arts at 188 Katoomba Street. Sharon and Victor are widely known for their Blue Mountains Volunteer work, particularly with Katoomba’s Winter Magic Festival and Art Street. Having lived in Katoomba for over 10 years Sharon feels this artist hub is something that’s always been needed. Victor says Gallery ONE88 is not just a gallery but also a curated exhibition space that allows established and emerging artists the opportunity to work collaboratively and display their works. They are seeking expressions of interest from artists to hold solo or collaborative exhibitions; for studio space hire and life drawing models, with modelling sessions running Wednesday night.

Medlow Bath to Mt Victoria Recent developments in these areas establish this as a centre with attractions to rival those that have made Leura to Katoomba so renowned. Reopening of the Hydro Majestic in November 2014 following upgrades, redevelopment of Redleaf Resort, the opening of Parklands and many other accommodation improvements in the area are attracting new visitors. Combined with more places to eat, galleries and a wide variety of new businesses, we now have a newly evolving centre, drawing locals and visitors into a thriving new cosmopolitan area to spend time; to return to, seeking new experiences.

Wallerawang/Portland In 1863 Thomas Murray selected land that would later become the site of Portland and he established the first lime kiln on the corner of Lime and Villiers Streets. Both Portland and Wallerawang are blessed with two historic public houses, schools, fascinating historic buildings, lakes and fishing streams, delightful little stores and friendly people. Portland is famous as the Town that built Sydney due to its Cement works and Wallerawang is famous for its Black Gold (coal) associations with Delta electricity. Portland’s Crystal Theatre hosts cinema as well as art shows and is famous for its street fairs. Portland’s big swimming pool has celebrated 50 years and Wallerawang’s historic old station’s heritage redevelopment has led to a florist, lolly shop, café and art gallery.

Walking on the Wild Side Kamari the White Christmas calf! Christmas arrived early at Taronga Western Plains Zoo, with the birth of a White Rhino calf in the early hours of Saturday, 19 December. The female calf is the third rhino born at the Zoo this year, with a male Black Rhino calf born in April and Australia’s first-ever Greater One-horned (or Indian) Rhino calf born in October. The calf has been born to experienced mother Mopani, who is nurturing the calf extremely well. “Staff are absolutely thrilled to be celebrating another precious rhino birth, it is wonderful to end a hugely successful conservation breeding program on such a positive note for 2015,” said Zoo Director Matthew Fuller. Keepers have named the calf Kamari, meaning ‘moonlight’ in Swahili, symbolising the calf’s early morning birth. Kamari will be on display with mother Mopani during the school holidays in the White rhino exhibit with the herd.

“Kamari’s birth and the other successful rhino births this year serve as a timely reminder about how important our conservation breeding programs are for species that are so heavily under threat in the wild,” said Unit Supervisor Pascale Benoit. Taronga actively supports conservation efforts for wild rhinos in Africa, Indonesia and India, including providing funds and support for habitat protection and reforestation, anti-poaching and rhino protection units and reduction of human-rhino conflict. We’re also a founding member of the International Rhino Foundation New Meerkat exhibit Now open! The new Meerkat exhibit is now OPEN at Taronga Western Plains Zoo. The exhibit is located at the beginning of the Zoo circuit, just between African Wild Dogs and Black Rhino, and features logs for climbing, tunnels for burrowing, heat panels for warming and of course sand for foraging; all necessities for a mob of Meerkats. Visitors can experience additional viewing of these curious creatures through large glass panels at the front of the exhibit. The Meerkat Encounter will also be back from early January. This popular encounter allows visitors go inside the exhibit with a Zoo Keeper, to get really close to the Meerkats. An important part of being a Meerkat is performing sentry or ‘lookout’ duty. Meerkats will take turns and climb heights to look keep an eye out for predators and to warn the other

Meerkats if they feel threatened. This exhibit has been designed with specially placed tree stumps and logs to allow the meerkats to climb to points where they can see clearly for 360 degrees to conduct this sentry duty. They also have a great view of the nearby Black Rhino! The purpose built tunnels provide shelter and shade for the Meerkats but also serve as an enrichment tools, as Zoo Keepers can hide food in them and encourage the Meerkats to fossick as they would in the wild. The new exhibit has been designed to be naturalistic and it can be divided when necessary to manage changes in the group’s social structure. The new Meerkat exhibit also includes a fun area for kids to explore and mimic the behaviours they see from the Meerkat mob.
