From the Editor February During the coming months, visitors and locals alike have a wonderful array of events to attend or participate in, as this very diverse and rich area offers up its best.

In February, you can enjoy Diesel Day at Trainworks in Thirlmere. Celebrate the grit and grunt of diesel with a family day out and lots for the kids and enthusiasts. The village of Thirlmere will once again host the Thirlmere Festival of Steam early in March. Enjoy all the fun of a country fair with entertainment, parades, guided tours of the Rail Museum and Steam Train Rides. If you enjoy a good old fashioned country show, then you can look forward to the Robertson, Moss Vale and Goulburn Shows during March. These events have all the excitement of large regional shows with the usual line up of interesting agricultural attractions, as well as novelty events and sideshows. Don’t miss the Rose Festival in Goulburn. The festival will feature

rose displays, bus tours of the public rose gardens, an art exhibition and demonstrations. Stalls will include local lavender products, craft stalls and jewellery. If you are a local, you will be familiar with the regular productions offered by the Highlands Theatre Group. Prepare yourself to be dazzled by yet another fine presentation, the award winning musical 'Chicago'. This is a satirical tale of merry murderesses and the desire for fame and fortune, set beneath the bright lights of 1920’s Chicago. Sing along to one show stopping number after another with this very talented and experienced cast. As you travel throughout our scenically diverse region, be sure to carry your iMag with you and have a safe and happy stay!

Camden, Narellan, Campbelltown Macarthur - the best of both worlds! Where can you find a vibrant city with modern delights, enjoy the tranquillity of nature reserves and historic charm, but also revel in adrenalin packed activities. Macarthur is less than an hour’s drive south-west of Sydney and includes the cities of Campbelltown and historic Camden. Throughout the region, the history of colonial settlement is reflected in the large number of heritage listed buildings; Camden Park House and Macarthur Park are fine examples of 19C architecture prevelent in the area. The Macarthur district played a significant role in the birth of the Australian Wool, Wine and Wheat industries. History books tell us that John Macarthur was responsible for our success as producers of fine Merino Wool, but historical records show that Elizabeth Macarthur, his wife, played a larger role than he did. John & Elizabeth Macarthur established convict built Belgenny Farm on part of the original 5000 acres granted to the family by Lord Camden in 1805. Today, Belgenny Farm is a major educational centre with direct links to our agricultural history. It offers specialised educational and environmental tours, giving young people and special interest groups a chance to learn about agriculture and its history in NSW. Macarthur is rich in history but also in art & culture. There is a diverse range of cultural venues including

a number of small boutique art galleries such as Struggletown Fine Arts Complex. Campbelltown Arts Centre and the Campbelltown Entertainment and Exhibition Centre are the entertainment heart of Macarthur. Macarthur is bordered by scenic hills, nature reserves and the Georges and Nepean Rivers. The beauty of the nature reserves and wildlife trails will surprise and delight with spectacular flowing streams, rock escarpments and native flora and fauna. For a superb day out, visit one of Macarthur's most interesting attractions; Australian Botanic Gardens, Mount Annan offers a lovely family day out in the midst of 416 hectares of Australian bushland. The facility includes picnic areas, a restaurant, over 10 kilometres of walking tracks and a native flora research facility and NSW Seedbank. Rehearsal shot of the chorus around Rachel Gregg who is playing one of the leads - Velma Kelly

‘Chicago’ is on its way! Ladies and gentlemen! It’s almost time to slick your hair and wear your buckle shoes! You are about to be razzle dazzled out of your seat! The musical, ‘Chicago’ is on its way! Proudly presented by the Highlands Theatre Group, this award winning show, is both devilish and delightful. Under the skilful direction of Barbara Handley, this exciting production

14 www.monthlyimag.com.au

promises to deliver a satirical tale of merry murderesses and the desire for fame and fortune, set beneath the bright lights of 1920’s Chicago. This story moves at gunshot pace and you will be singing along to one show stopping number after another. When you consider, that each member of this outstanding cast, from the dancers to the musicians, is highly experienced, it comes as no surprise to discover that the Highlands Theatre Group, is one of only three companies in NSW to be allowed the privilege of staging such a glittering and powerful show. Barbara Handley, who once played Matron ‘Mama’ Morton herself, gladly came out of her tentative retirement of two years, when the opportunity arose, to direct one of her all time, favourite musicals. This will be theatre at its best and a musical experience not to be missed. Highlands Theatre Group Ph: 4861 4759 www.htg.org.au

Historic Berrima

Berrima & Moss Vale Berrima - a shoppers paradise Berrima is a unique, historic village offering a day tripper the most wonderful array of food and shopping experiences in a living history environment. Established as a township in 1831, Berrima is a preserved Australian, Georgian, colonial town. It is located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River. The town was laid out in the manner of an English village around a village green. The centre of the village today is a living museum, with many of the original buildings, including the gaol, still providing a unique atmosphere within the town. Today, Berrima is a favourite day trip destination for Sydneysiders and Illawarra and Canberra residents. It offers exquisite boutique shopping, antiques and great food.

Moss Vale, the Shire Capital Moss Vale is the gateway to the Hume Highway and the Illawarra and is central to Southern Highland townships and villages and to Highland attractions. The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an effort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes. Some buildings date to the 1860s 1890s, the Old Post Office. The Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of the 19C architecture. Leighton Gardens, in the centre of town, is as pretty as a picture in spring and autumn with massed displays of flowers and shrubs.

Robertson Robertson is a pretty rural village with breath-taking scenery, spectacular waterfalls and rainforests in nearby National Parks. Lush surrounding farmland and country lanes complete the picture for this 'not to be missed' visitor friendly village, which lies at the edge of the Southern Highlands. In Robertson, you’ll find cosy cafes and restaurants, antiques and collectables, galleries with regular exhibitions, and a heritage railway station. Many shops specialize in goods that are both hand - made and Australian. The building known as ‘The Cheese Factory’ is a ‘must see’ in Robertson as it now houses a collection of shops offering, cheese, gifts, craft, collectables and a cafe. The village is worth visiting both for itself, and as an ideal base to explore a spectacular hinterland, it is recognized as the “green heart” of the

Southern Highlands on account of its superb rural scenery. Ridge roads with sweeping views contrast with sheltered tree-clad lanes, making this a delightful place for a scenic drive. There is much to discover. Stud cattle, sheep and alpacas graze green pastures. Rich, deep, red soils grow the legendary “Robbo Spuds” - Australia’s most sought-after potatoes. Nearby are three of the longest drop waterfalls in Australia. They all plunge from rugged sandstone escarpments into rainforest canyons and valleys. Barren Grounds nature reserve has wonderful wild flowers and easy plateau walks to coastal views. The Illawarra Fly turns exploring the cliff tops into a great adventure with treetop walkways, a soaring tower, and sweeping coastal vistas from Port Kembla to Kiama.

From the moment the gates open on Friday, 7 March until the spectacular fireworks display the following evening, this year’s show program promises to be one of the best ever presented with something for all members of the family. Over the two days, the spotlight will shine on the centre ring where horse and rider team up to impress the judges as they strive for the elusive championship ribbons.

Early indications are that the Hindmarsh Pavilion will be a popular venue as patrons cast their eyes over a vast number of categories including craft, needlework, flowers and cakes on display. Don’t forget the high quality on exhibit with the Dairy and Beef cattle strutting their stuff while numbers in the poultry and dog sections have surpassed all expectations. Throw in a host of novelty events such as the Great Australian Potato Race, Demolition Derby, push bikes and Gig races, women’s pumpkin lawn

bowls, weight judging competition, hay stacking and the unusual rides for those who like to be daring, while those wanting to test their appetite can enter the pie eating competition. Old timers will be able to recall memories of the past when the Berrima District Old Machinery Club promotes an intriguing range of machines from days gone by. Whatever tickles your fancy rest assured you will find it at this year’s Robertson Show.

Goulburn

Australia’s first inland city Goulburn is a thriving rural and commercial centre and offers country style living and hospitality. The city is rich in heritage and natural beauty and any visitor interested in the history and development of this beautiful city will be delighted during guided and self guided tours of historic sites, homesteads, cathedrals, cemeteries and points of interest. The first white explorers sited the land that was to become the first inland city from Mt. Towrang in 1798, but it was not explored until some 20 years later. Governor Macquarie declared it the Goulburn plains in 1820. Land seekers settled the area from 1818 onwards.

By 1841 Goulburn had a population of some 1,200 people - a courthouse, police barracks, churches, hospital, post office and was the centre of a great sheep and farming area. It became an administrative centre for the district taking in surrounding townships for the new County Argyle. It is home to the Big Merino & the NSW Police Academy and its secondary industry is based on a mix of private and Government enterprise. In the private sector, firms are engaged in wool scouring, cotton products, footwear, heavy and light engineering, building related undertakings, retail distribution and concrete products.

Wollongong - where the mountains meet the sea! Wollongong is located 80 kilometres south of Sydney and is bordered by the Royal National Park to the north, Lake Illawarra to the south and the Illawarra Escarpment to the west. The Wollongong coastline offers 17 sparkling surf beaches that are patrolled by lifesavers from September to April. Beaches are generally in easy walking distance from shops, hotels and clubs. Stanwell Park to the north of Wollongong City, could be regarded as the gateway to the Illawarra region and is an ideal spot for day trippers. Bald Hill Lookout, a magnificent platform looking south over Wollongong City, has outstanding views of the Illawarra and its escarpment. Watch hang gliders and para gliders or marvel at the spot

where Lawrence Hargrave first took flight. Experience the Grand Pacific Sea Bridge, 665 metres over-the-ocean, near Stanwell Park; spend some time exploring northern coastal villages while heading down the cliff hugging roads hanging above the ocean. North of Wollongong the coastal villages are famous for their unspoilt beaches and rock pools, unique art and crafts, great fishing and surfing spots as well as many cafes and restaurants. From those northern villages, the Grand Pacific Drive makes its way into the city of Wollongong. There you will find an array of shopping outlets, restaurants and cafes, golf courses, art galleries and more.
