Autumn in the Southern Highlands
MARCH/APRIL 2014
From the Editor Autumn is a most delightful time to visit the Southern Highlands region and an ideal time to enjoy all of the shows and festivals happening over the coming months. The village of Thirlmere will host the Thirlmere Festival of Steam in March. You can enjoy all the fun of a country fair with entertainment, parades and guided tours of the Rail Museum. There is something for music lovers when Bowral hosts the annual Music Festival, something for theatre goers when HTG presents ‘Chicago’, and something for food and wine lovers when the region hosts the inaugural Wine Time Festival. Don’t miss the Rose Festival in Goulburn featuring rose displays, bus tours of the public rose gardens, an art exhibition, demonstrations and market stalls. If you enjoy a good old - fashioned country show, then we have four on offer; Robertson, Moss Vale, Goulburn and Camden Shows will 6 www.monthlyimag.com.au
provide all the excitement of large regional shows with the usual line up of interesting agricultural attractions as well as novelty events and sideshows. An annual ‘standout’ festival in the Southern Highlands is Brigadoon in Bundanoon. The gathering of the clans means that festivities will include a street parade, massed pipe bands, dancing, games, displays and more. The Southern Highlands Antiques and Collectables Fair is on again early in May and promises to be a draw card for collectors, both serious and novice. Coincidently, 5 May is a day in our region when we celebrate the pumpkin and the apple. The Collector Village will hold its annual Pumpkin Festival and Tallong will hold its Apple Day. Both events promise to be family friendly, with lots of fun, food and entertainment. There is plenty to chose from over the coming months - so enjoy!

It’s WINE TIME in the Highlands If you’re interested in wine and food, the Southern Highlands is definitely the place to be in March for the region’s inaugural WINE TIME festival. The Southern Highlands has a developing and highly regarded wine industry with wine shows and wine writers regularly recognising the region’s wines as among the best in Australia. Similarly, local food producers are being recognised for the high quality of their produce and the region is blessed with a vibrant restaurant and cafe scene. March is not only the start of Autumn, arguably the most beautiful season in the Highlands, it is also the start of vintage for the local wineries when the grapes are picked and the winemaking process begins.
10 www.monthlyimag.com.au
WINE TIME features over 50 events at venues across the Southern Highlands. You can enjoy dinner with a winemaker at one of the region’s best restaurants, vineyard tours or grape stomping. There are farm tours, workshops and a sustainability fair, or you can indulge yourself at one of the food and wine-matched dinners. WINE TIME follows on from Dan Murphy’s Australian Highlands Wine Show so an event not to be missed in Bowral is the Top 20 Public Tasting. Here you’ll be able to taste the best wines from the Show, enjoy gourmet finger food, participate in the People’s Choice vote, see the major awards presented and take home a Spiegelau wine glass. The Macarthur region includes the cities of Camden and Campbelltown and is a vibrant, bustling region known for offering experiences which include adrenalin packed activities, heritage attractions, entertainment activities and award winning dining. The region is rich in history and character as Macarthur was the birthplace of Australia’s wool, wine and wheat industries. Today, these links with the history of colonial settlement are reflected in the large number of heritage listed buildings that are still scattered throughout. Camden Park House and
Macarthur Park are fine examples of 19C architecture prevelent in the area. There are plenty of opportunities to get up close with nature as Macarthur boasts lovely public gardens and parks and is bordered by scenic hills, nature reserves and the Georges and Nepean Rivers, so bushwalking is a must.

The Australian PlantBank at the Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan There is so much to explore at the Australian Botanic Garden, Mount Annan, the largest botanic garden in the country. The recently opened Australian PlantBank is an internationally significant centre for plant research and learning, incorporating the largest native plant conservation seedbank in Australia. Seed or plant material from all 25,000 Australian native plant species will progressively be deposited into the Australian PlantBank. Seeds come in many shapes and sizes, but inside each one is a tiny embryo. Scientists at the Australian PlantBank investigate how different seeds germinate and develop into
adult plants, leading to a better understanding of how plants regenerate and survive. This knowledge is used in the horticultural and agricultural industries and assists in the restoration of damaged ecosystems. Visit the Australian PlantBank and discover more about the wonderful world of plants. PlantBank is open Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm. Free volunteer guided tours of this amazing facility are offered on selected days, including weekends. Ph: 4634 7935 for tour information. Entry is free. Open daily (except for Christmas Day) from 10am to 5pm and is located off Narellan Road, Mount Annan.

Wollondilly
Picton, Thirlmere, Bargo, Appin Wollondilly, is situated on the south western outskirts of Sydney and at the foothills of the Southern Highlands. It is surrounded by spectacular, natural beauty and rural pastures in an area that relies on dairying and mixed farming. It takes in Bargo in the south, Appin and Menangle in the east, Warragamba in the north, Yerranderie Ghost Town and the Burragorang Valley to the west. Historic Picton was originally called Stonequarry and was in fact a private town in the early 19C. It has a number of notable historic sites; Vault Hill, owned by an early settler Henry Antill, the old courthouse, built in 1864, a Victorian classical stone post office with an impressive clock tower, dating from 1892, the CBC Bank (now the National Australia Bank) built in 1885, St Mark’s Anglican Church, and Larkin Cottage, one of the oldest surviving buildings in town. Take in the breathtaking views of the 16 www.monthlyimag.com.au
Burragorang Valley, the waters of which are dammed by Warragamba Dam or picnic and BBQ at the Avon, Cordeaux or Nepean Dams. Wirrimbirra Sanctuary is set in 200 acres of bushland. This National Trust (NSW) property is located between Bargo and Tahmoor. There are native animals, a native plant nursery, picnic tables and a Gift Shop. Open Tues-Sun. Train Works in Thirlmere is a magical place to visit for the enthusiast and the young at heart. It is the home of Australia’s oldest and largest railway museum - step back in time to an era when everyone travelled by train. There are over 40 locomotives and 80 carriages on display, dating from 1865. As well, there is an exhibition of railway items and memorabilia, a signals display, an authentic fettler’s shed, and a heritage-listed 1880s railway station.

Rehearsal shot of the chorus around Rachel Gregg who is playing one of the leads - Velma Kelly
Countdown begins for ‘Chicago’ The countdown is now officially on, in the lead up to the Highland Theatre Group’s production of the dynamic Ebb, Fosse and Kander musical, ‘Chicago’. The multi- talented cast, under the experienced direction of Barbara Handley, is stepping it up and stepping it out, as rehearsal time increases at The Highland School of Performing Arts in Bowral. With only six weeks to go until opening night, the excitement and anticipation among the cast and crew is building rapidly, as the glitz and glamour of 1920’s Chicago is authentically recreated, to form the backdrop to this wonderfully entertaining and provocative tale of greed, murder, treachery and the desire for fame and fortune at all costs. You can be assured that flappers, feathers, fishnets, fringing and sequins, will feature throughout, along with a superb musical score, dynamic dancing, fabulous songs and snappy dialogue. A show of this magnitude and fame certainly has much to live up to. It demands unwavering commitment and discipline from not only the Principal actors, but also from everyone associated with the production, including back stage and lighting crew, stage band musicians and costume designers. All have a vital role to play, in helping the production run smoothly 26 www.monthlyimag.com.au

Berrima & Moss Vale Berrima - a unique visitor destination Berrima is a historic village offering a day tripper the most wonderful array of food and shopping experiences in a living history environment. Berrima, in the 19th century, was destined to become the main town of the Southern Highlands. But when the railway line was sent to Moss Vale in the 1860s, it faded to a sleepy village. At that time the gaol still held rogue bushrangers. The name Berrima is said to be a word from the language of the Dharawal people meaning ‘Black Swan’ . These tribespeople were rarely seen by the 1870s when the land was settled for farming and grazing. The first Europeans to investigate the area were sent by the colonial governor, Governor Hunter. With a water supply provided by the Wingecarribee River, a town plan, in the manner of an English village around a village green was laid out by Robert Hoddle. 30 www.monthlyimag.com.au
Few substantial houses were built, although by the 1850s sturdy Anglican and Catholic churches replaced the original wattle and daub versions. Licensed since 1834, the SurveyorGeneral Inn is the longest licensed hotel in NSW. By the 1960s, the preservation of old Georgian buildings became of national importance to our heritage and because of its fine buildings from that era, the entire village of Berrima was declared a historic village. The Courthouse Museum and Berrima Gaol are two impressive sandstone buildings which every visitor must see. Until a few years ago the gaol was still used as a prison, today it is a women’s prison. But perhaps its most romantic period was when, during WW1, it became an internment camp for enemy aliens and POWs. Today, Berrima is a favourite day trip destination for Sydneysiders, the Illawarra and Canberra residents. It offers exquisite boutique shopping, antiques and great food.

Moss Vale www.highlandsimag.com.au 31
Moss Vale, the Shire Capital Moss Vale is central to Southern Highland townships and villages and to Highland attractions and only a short drive away. The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an effort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes. Some buildings date to the 1860s - 1890s, the Old Post Office. The Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of the 19C architecture. The Moss Vale area was once occupied by the Gundangara people, though they had disappeared by the 1870s, partly due to the loss of their hunting land to European settlers. Moss Vale holds a large part of the Southern Highlands Industry - as well as being a minor centre for agriculture, many light and medium industries are found in and around Moss Vale.
Leighton Gardens, in the centre of town, is a ‘must visit’ with displays of flowers and shrubs in Spring and Autumn.
Moss Vale Show 14 - 16 March

The fireworks display is always a family favourite, as is the Smash Up Derby and the Ute Muster. Magnificent Horses , Beef Cattle, Alpaca’s, Poultry and Waterfowl all compete to be the Grand Champion. Moss Vale Showground, Illawarra Hwy, Moss Vale. Ph: 02 4868 1869 www.mossvaleshow.com.au

Happy Birthday Courtyard Cafe Celebrating their 5th Year
It seems like only yesterday that Julie and Richard Hamer opened the doors of their café in the little gazebo at the back of the Lolly Swagman in Berrima. They have now moved and expanded to a 70 seat capacity café. The Courtyard Café is nestled off the main street, in a delightful courtyard, in the historic village of Berrima, only a few minutes’ detour off the Hume Highway. As you enter the café you’ll be greeted by smiling faces and instantly feel at home, with the eclectic furnishing and tasty homemade temptations. There are books on every table and in all the nooks and crannies to read at your leisure. The menu caters for everyone so why not start with a hearty big breakfast or pancakes; for a quick snack toasted sandwiches or focaccias. The lunch menu ranges from yummy soup, burgers, fish and chips, homemade quiches and pies and offers a hearty children’s menu.
Finish your lunch with homemade cakes or enjoy morning or afternoon tea with a terrific Devonshire tea. The Café caters to Gluten free requirements and the outside is pet friendly. The continued success of Courtyard Café can be attributed to strong return trade and being such a large café they are able to welcome buses, organised tours, car clubs and other functions. Bookings are advised to avoid disappointment. Open 8.30 – 4pm each day. CLOSED Thursdays (except school holidays). Ph: 4877 2729

Primo 171 by Hotondo Homes
Cottage homes in Renwick are selling quickly with 50 per cent of the latest release already sold.
Cottage homes have been introduced at Renwick in the Southern Highlands to meet demand from empty nesters and retirees looking to downsize their homes as well as first home buyers keen to enter the market. Ranging from two to four bedrooms, the cottages are designed to complement the Southern Highlands environment. Corporate Marketing General Manager Robert Sullivan said the homes represented an “ exciting phase in the Renwick development. “These beautiful, modern cottages at Renwick are on easy-to-manage lots, surrounded by walkways, open spaces and mountain views close to the heart of Mittagong so they offer affordable country living,” he said.
The 2new cottage lots range in size to 535m 2 from 356m2 to 535m2, and are priced from $355,000, including the $20,000 HAF rebate for eligible purchasers. First Home Buyers may also qualify for the NSW Government’s $15,000 First Home Owner’s Grant. Renwick is a 600-lot residential development near Mittagong.

Bundanoon is Brigadoon for a day. 5 April 2014 “one of the most special Scottish events in the world” Hungry for Haggis! And the skirl of the Pipes? Don’t fly to Scotland, come celebrate “Bundanoon is Brigadoon” It’s the ideal family friendly day out with games, fun and food. The big parade begins at 9.30 am when thousands will line the streets as hundreds of pipes and drums, colourful floats and displays, marchers and vintage cars, make their way to the grounds. After the bands have arrived, the first of the massed band displays takes place. With carefully manoeuvred patterns of marchers, the flourishes of the drum majors, and the heavenly sound of the pipes, you don't need to be in Scotland to feel the thrill of the occasion. After the Official Opening ceremony at 10.30am, there will be a massed demonstration of Scottish Country Dancing. The Chieftain for the 37th gathering is Valerie Cairney, Editor and Publisher of the Scottish Banner newspaper. Valerie Cairney is pleased to be returning to the Bundanoon Highland Gathering; an event she calls “one of the most special Scottish events in the world”. Through the Scottish Banner Valerie has met a wonderful array of people from across the world, from royalty to celebrities, however it is the regular members of the Scottish community who inspire her most. The “Danelaw, Medieval Re-enactment Group will be attending Brigadoon in 2014. Danelaw is an independent medieval re-enactment group.
The group specialises and focuses on exploring the arms, armour and combat from the early dark ages through to the renaissance period. The members will be on hand to show you first hand the equipment at the static display and look forward to entertaining you with their foot combat tournament and full history show during the day. There are enough activities to keep you busy and entertained throughout the day, including the solo fiddler, kennel club, Highland Cattle, displays, choirs and other performers. You could spend some time watching the bands and drum majors practising, admire the highland dances, take in the colourful tartan dress of the crowds, or visit the many stalls. There are dozens of food stalls but don't miss out on the Highland delicacies such as Scots pies, haggis, blood pudding, square sausage, and the famous Scottish Shortbread. Other stalls offer Caledonian souvenirs and goods, jams and preserves, clothing, arts and crafts, and information. As the day draws to a close, the final ceremonies, with pipes and drums, appear for the Final Massed Bands Display. Then the crowd falls silent for the Lone Piper. In the evening, visitors and participants gather at the local hall for the Ceilidh - a traditional Highlands kneesup where the haggis holds pride of place.

Robertson
Robertson is the lushest of the Southern Highlands landscapes and is renowned for its rich volcanic soil in which potatoes are grown for the NSW market. Potatoes were the first crops planted in Robertson when a large parcel of land was cleared in the mid 19C. It could be said that this was due to the prevalence of landholders with an Irish background. Robertson’s development followed the usual pattern of rural towns with churches, cricket and football teams, schools, school of arts and agricultural societies. Macquarie Pass, linking the Highlands to the coast was such a brilliant spectacle that Robertson soon became the eastern gateway to the Highlands. Local businessmen, eager to capitalise on the town’s potential, brought the attractions of the area to general attention; the waterfalls, gorges and lush countryside.
The village is worth visiting both for itself, and as an ideal base to explore a spectacular 44 www.monthlyimag.com.au
hinterland; it is recognized as the “green heart” of the Southern Highlands on account of its superb rural scenery. The building known as ‘The Cheese Factory’ is a ‘must see’ in Robertson as it now houses a collection of shops offering cheese, gifts, craft, collectables and a cafe. The Illawarra Fly turns exploring the cliff tops into a great adventure with treetop walkways, a soaring tower, and sweeping coastal vistas from Port Kembla to Kiama. Robertson is a great place to use as a base when exploring the Highlands, close to national parks and half way between the coast and plains. The town is within easy reach of the surrounding towns of Berrima, Bowral, Bundanoon, Fitzroy Falls, Mittagong, Moss Vale and Sutton Forest, all great places to wander, stop for something to eat and browse through the unique little shops and galleries.

Tickle your fancy at the 2014 Robertson Show 7 & 8 March
There are so many highlights associated with Robertson’s annual show it’s hard to single out any particular event. From the moment the gates open on Friday, 7 March until the spectacular fireworks display the following evening, this year’s show program promises to be one of the best ever presented with something for all members of the family. Over the two days, the spotlight will shine on the centre ring where horse and rider team up to impress the judges as they strive for the elusive championship ribbons. Early indications are that the Hindmarsh Pavilion will be a popular venue as patrons cast their eyes over a vast number of categories including craft, needlework, flowers and cakes on display.
Don’t forget the high quality on exhibit with the Dairy and Beef cattle strutting their stuff while numbers in the poultry and dog sections have surpassed all expectations. Throw in a host of novelty events such as the Great Australian Potato Race, Demolition Derby, push bikes and Gig races, women’s pumpkin lawn bowls, weight judging competition, hay stacking and the unusual rides for those who like to be daring, while those wanting to test their appetite can enter the pie eating competition. Old timers will be able to recall memories of the past when the Berrima District Old Machinery Club promotes an intriguing range of machines from days gone by.

Goulburn
A City Rich in Heritage!
Goulburn is a thriving rural and commercial centre and offers country style living and fine hospitality. The city is rich in heritage and natural beauty and any visitor interested in the history and development of this beautiful city will be delighted during guided and self guided tours of historic sites, homesteads, cathedrals, cemeteries and points of interest. The first white explorers sited the land that was to become the first inland city from Mt. Towrang in 1798, but it was not explored until some 20 years later. Governor Macquarie declared it the Goulburn plains in 1820. Land seekers settled the area from 1818 onwards. By 1841 Goulburn had a population of some 1,200 people - a courthouse, police barracks, churches, hospital, post office and was the centre of a great sheep and farming area. It became an administrative centre for the district taking in surrounding townships for the new 52 www.monthlyimag.com.au
County Argyle. Today, it is home to the Big Merino and the NSW Police Academy and its secondary industry is based on a mix of private and Government enterprise. In the private sector, firms are engaged in wool scouring, cotton products, footwear, heavy and light engineering, building related undertakings, retail distribution and concrete products. Goulburn Historic Waterworks is located on the banks of the Wollondilly River. It has fully operational steam engines; the 1883 Appleby Bros. beam engine and the 1860s Hick Hargreaves corliss valve engine. The beam engine dates to the 1880s when it was installed to pump water for Goulburn. The Waterworks is of national significance as it is the only complete, workable, steam powered municipal water supply left in its original location in the Southern Hemisphere. There is a cafĂŠ on site as well as picnic areas and playgrounds.

Wollongong Wollongong is located 80 kilometres south of Sydney and is bordered by the Royal National Park, Lake Illawarra and the Illawarra Escarpment. Stanwell Park to the north of Wollongong City, could be regarded as the gateway to the Illawarra region and is an ideal spot for day trippers. Bald Hill Lookout, a magnificent platform looking south over Wollongong City, has outstanding views of the Illawarra and its escarpment. Watch hang gliders and para gliders or marvel at the spot where Lawrence Hargrave first took flight. Experience the Grand Pacific Sea Bridge, 665 metres over-the-ocean, near Stanwell Park; spend some time exploring northern coastal villages while heading down the cliff hugging roads hanging above the ocean. North of Wollongong the coastal villages are famous for their unspoilt beaches and rock pools, unique art and crafts, great fishing and surfing spots as well as many cafes and restaurants. 60 www.monthlyimag.com.au
