February Welcome to the February 2012 edition of the South Coast Monthly iMag. February is show month on the South Coast, with all the excitement and fun of traditional country shows on offer throughout the region. One show not to be missed is the Kangaroo Valley Show on Friday 17 and Saturday 18 February. See pages 23 and 24 for more about the events, stalls and performances on offer this year. You will also find excitement at the Nowra Speedway, fun at the Stomping of the Grapes at Crooked River Winery and culture at the Milton Theatre and Kiama’s ‘Art in the Park’ event. the great outdoors. Again, our Boating, Camping and Fishing on the South Coast feature has the best local businesses to help you camp in comfort, get out on the water and feast on freshly caught fish. Enjoy! As always, there is plenty on the South Coast to tantalise your tastebuds, so check out our fresh food feature, wine trail, dining guide and the many other cafes, restaurants and food outlets you’ll find in the pages of this edition. Although the kids return to school this month, remember that the South Coast is still a fabulous weekend getaway with so much beauty to explore, places to shop and things to see and do within easy reach of Sydney, Wollongong, and Canberra. See you around the South Coast.

Memories are made in the summer holidays as many kids catch their first fish from the myriad of south coast wharves and jetties. The secret to keeping the kids entertained and enthralled lies in some good old fashioned bait and berley. It only takes a few minutes to grab a couple of loaves of bread and the remains of a good Christmas feed of prawns and you’re away. Simply mix the prawn heads and shells into a bucket with the bread and water until you have a slurry. Shovel the berley one scoop at a time with a cut down plastic milk container into the water and then toss in a cooked peeled prawn on a no 4 hook with a really really tiny ball sinker and light line and you’re in for hours of entertainment. Add a small float attached either side of a small swivel if you’re chasing mullet, and don’t forget to remind the kids why we throw the really small, and the really big fish back. Hiring a professional guide is also a great way to learn new skills and hopefully hook that fish of a lifetime. BOATING, CAMPING & Stingray 250CS Cruiser: Luxury and Performance The 250CS cruiser is Stingray’s largest and most accommodating boat. Yet, with an appropriate tow vehicle, this 25 foot cruiser can be trailered to endless destinations. It sleeps four in two berths, has a fully equipped galley and a fully-enclosed standup fiberglass head with mirrored vanity, overhead lighting, generous storage, sink, manual-flush toilet and shower. The 250CS was featured in the January 2008 Trailer Boats Excellence in Design issue, which spotlighted 45 leading trendsetter boats. ‘When it comes to boat cabins, it’s often the little things that count, and there are lots of those on board Stingray’s 250CS. ‘The overhead leading through the companionway into the cabin is sloped to add extra headroom—sure to be appreciated by the taller people.
‘The galley also represents forward thinking. ‘Besides a fiddled counter that helps keep things from flying off when the water gets rough, the coolest touch is the builtin organizer in the back, which has places to stash bottles of merlot, silverware, or other items. And because it’s deeply angled, what’s stowed will stay stowed, even in a sea. Sweet. ‘The 250CS’ sleeping arrangements will accommodate four and include a mid-cabin berth with an unusually tall entrance, above which you’ll find an upper locker in an area that’s often underutilized on other boats. ‘With so many little luxuries, you may never want to go back to land.’ For this and other Stingray boats contact Nowra Powerboats on 4422 1999. See ad on page 6 for details.

“This is your Captain Speaking” So you’ve had dreams of becoming a pilot, or maybe you’d just like to know how it feels to take the controls, well hold on for the ride of your life when you take a Trial Instructional Flight (TIF) with NSW Air. NSW Air is a pilot training organisation that also provides introductory flights to those who enjoy a bit of adventure. The trial flights or TIF’s are similar to the first lesson you would receive if you were training to be a pilot. You sit in the command seat, you taxi out to the runway and you get to take off and manoeuver the aircraft whilst in the sky, making turns, climbing and
descending, all the while under the watchful eye of a qualified instructor. The flights are conducted 7 days a week from the Illawarra Regional Airport at Albion Park Rail and start with a preflight briefing and aircraft inspection before being strapped in for the adventure. For those a little less daring, NSW Air offer joy flights where you can just relax and take in the view while your pilot does all the work. Either way you’ll enjoy a great view of the Illawarra and South Coast and have something to talk about for a quite a while. To make a booking contact NSW Air on 4256 1001.
Marilyn and Bill are the founding members of a national franchise, with more than 130 stores. “We’re constantly sourcing the best quality products. As a franchise, we have access to a wide range of wholesalers and we pass these savings to our customers,” Marilyn said. So think about your health these holidays. Kiama Harbour © Peta Jade
Kiama - Jamberoo Kiama The coastal town of Kiama is said to gain it’s name from the aboriginal word Kiaram-a which when translated from the local aboriginal language “where the sea makes a noise”, is undoubtedly referring to the famous ‘Kiama Blowhole’. At present, there is a wide assortment of things to do and see in the Kiama area. Walking tracks ensure that you can visit the Lighthouse, Kiama Harbour and both the Main and Little Blowhole with ease. Fishing, beach swimming and exploring the rock pools are also great activities. Some great cafes line the main street for those looking for a bite to eat and the Sandstone Terrace Shops make a great place to browse with friends. The Kiama Terraces in Collins Street date from around 1886 and are now classified by the National Trust. Many of the historical buildings can
www.southcoastimag.com.au
also be viewed and a top heritage walk leaflet is available at the Kiama Visitor's Centre.
Jamberoo
Jamberoo was opened up for grazing in the 19th century and, at the time, much of the original rainforest was shipped out to Sydney as building material. Jamberoo was settled in the 1820's when it abounded in dense vegetation and rainforest. Jamberoo today is a small but quaint village and visitors will enjoy a leisurely drive out to the town past the rolling hills and countryside. Jamberoo still houses many of the original churches and the schoolhouse with the local pub's age dating back to 150 years ago. Fredericks General Store in Allowrie Street can provide you with a local map should you need one. Minnamurra Rainforest Reserve and Jamberoo Recreation Park are top
attractions in the area to check out and should not be missed when in the area. The rainforest reserve is home to abundant native wildlife and spectacular waterfalls whilst the Jamberoo Action Park is fun for the whole family!
What to See & Do ■ Enjoy the many shops, boutiques and cafes. Check out the Kiama Terraces. ■ Take a walk in the Minnamurra Rainforest or head to Illawarra Fly Treetop walk. ■ Visit the famous Kiama Blowhole or to the Little Blowhole. ■ Be thrilled at Jamberoo Action Park.

Gerringong - Gerroa Gerringong Cleared by cedar cutters, Gerringong developed as a dairying village at the centre of rich pastures. More recently it has become a holiday town, popular with those who prize its beaches, glorious surroundings and proximity to Sydney. The local Crooked River Winery has beautiful wine to both purchase or enjoy with a meal in their cafe whilst overlooking the picturesque pastures of the winery. What to See & Do
Gerroa is the closest town to Seven Mile Beach National Park, a grand and inspiring sweep of sand with an extensive dune system and a wealth of bird and mammal life. Gerroa developed as a holiday town, although Seven Mile Beach had been used for horse racing as early as the 1860s. In 1933, aviator Charles Kingsford-Smith used this beach as the runway for his pioneering flight across the Tasman to New Zealand. Gerroa offers easy access to several national parks and fine beaches as well as many of the prime attractions of the Illawarra, such as wineries, quaint country towns and historic attractions. 5MINUTES WITH A FOODIE Barbara Chambers
Super fresh cafe & deli menu
Just Delicious, Berry
New Zealand born nutritionist and owner of Just Delicious in Berry shares about her love of food. Who taught you to cook? Growing up on a farm I always cooked with my mum. Nearly every meal was prepared from food grown on the farm. My family entertained often, we were always cooking. Did you really used to be a Nutritionist? I always enjoyed my work as a nutritionist. But after 20 years I decided to leave my job at St George Hospital and pursue my dream of owning a cafe. Now I’m living that dream! Do you have a philosophy on food? Fresh, homegrown, nutritious food prepared with love always enthuses me! What are three things in your kitchen you can’t live without? Victorinox steak knife, circulon non-stick frying pan, oh and most certainly the dishwasher. Most memorable meal? My surprise 50th birthday party. Sitting outside
on an autumn evening enjoying beef wellington and other delights cooked by family and friends. Yum! Your typical breaky? I kick off the day with three weetbix and of course a cup of coffee! I love the experience of drinking coffee; the aroma, the taste and the rich creaminess of the milk! The café’s Zentvelds blend fits this bill perfectly. What are you most proud of at Just Delicious? That people enjoy our food and keep coming back for more. Favourite thing at Just Delicious? Our new avocado on toast. Sliced avocado on a lightly toasted baguette topped with fresh tomato salsa and drizzled with our dijon mustard vinaigrette. I also like our many fresh salads made daily. They’re always ‘Just Delicious’.

Kangaroo Valley © Howard Mitchell
Kangaroo Valley The original inhabitants of Kangaroo Valley, the ‘Wadi Wadi’ people, shared the valley with kangaroos and other native species. In 1840 a local pastor declared “This valley takes its name from the numerous kangaroos which abound here”. From the early part of the 19th century, cattlemen like Richard Brooks and Cornelius O’Brien acquired extensive landholdings in the valley. They were followed by Irish settlers who, to the delight of their neighbours, brought with them their “moonshining” skills. Gradually more settlement took place and a patchwork of small farms spread out as far as the escarpments, mainly concentrating on dairying activities. In 1977 the pleasant ambience of the entire valley and village was recognised by the National Trust. An outstanding feature of Kangaroo Valley is the Hampden Bridge across

the Kangaroo River with its impressive castellated sandstone towers. Opened to coach and cart traffic in 1898, the bridge was named after the then Governor of New South Wales, Lord Hampden. While visiting Kangaroo Valley make sure you call in at the Pioneer Farm Museum, a time capsule of life as it was 150 years ago. Kangaroo Valley is both pretty and dramatic – remnants of rainforest cling to the steep escarpment, while the Kangaroo River and small creeks crisscross the valley. Here you can enjoy the ideal ingredients of a short break – cafés, galleries, pubs, cabins in the bush and bushwalks. Kangaroo Valley Pottery located in the main street is a great place to pick up some local pottery and landscape artworks.

Bomaderry - Terara - Burrier - Yalwal The regional centre of Nowra, situated on the beautiful Shoalhaven River, is a bustling town which contrasts the pleasant laid back lifestyle enjoyed by locals. The broad Shoalhaven River offers a number of recreational possibilities such as fishing, boating and river cruises. Nowra is also a base for local adventure tour operators and options include canoe trips and skydiving. Nowra has a number of historic buildings and houses dating from the Victorian era. Heritage walks and other information can be picked up from the local Visitors Centre. One of the cultural delights of Nowra is nearby Bundanon, the rural property of the late Arthur Boyd which he gave to the nation to be used as a retreat for artists. Along with the district's many wonderful natural attractions, Nowra
itself provides an extensive selection of entertainment for all ages. Live entertainment is found at local clubs, hotels, halls and schools. Cinemas offer the latest releases and touring circuses pitch their colourful big tops throughout the year. The Fleet Air Arm Museum celebrates links with the aviation industry with a display of military and civil aircraft- it is well worth a visit. You can also explore Meroogal a historic timber gothic-style house with one of the most authentic 19th century interiors in NSW.
Terara
Original historic town with buildings dating back to 1850’s. The area is a prime agricultural region with great fresh local fruit and vegetable shops to buy local produce from. Use Millbank Road to cut through to Pyree and closer to the beach.

The store for ‘Everything’ Whether it’s a unique antique, quirky gift or affordable furniture, The Everything Store is the place to head for… well... everything. The South Coast’s largest second hand dealers, owners Janet and Craig have operated their current Nowra store for nine years, but have been in the antique and second hand goods business their whole lives. You could say it’s in the blood. Craig’s father and Janet’s grandmother were both in the business. Craig and Janet share their experience via good old fashioned customer
service and sound advice. Their vast and constantly changing range includes furniture, crockery, vintage items, antiques and gifts. “We focus on quality, quirky and unique items. “If we don’t have it, we can try to source things as far as possible. We do our best, but sometimes it takes time,” Craig says. “The most unique item we’ve sold was a life-sized, solid, hand carved timber rocking horse weighing two tonnes. “We sold it to a Sydney buyer who placed it in his lounge room,” Janet recalls.
“We had to get a large forklift in to deliver it!” The Everything Store is at 65 Graham Street, Nowra (down from the council building) and opens Monday to Friday 9am - 5pm and Saturdays 9am 2pm. Just look out for Elvis.

St Georges Basin - Sanctuary Point - Callala Bay - Callala Beach - Myola - Huskisson - Vincentia - Hyams Beach Jervis Bay measures about 15 km from north to south and about 10 km across. The main town is Huskisson, where you can enjoy dolphin and whale watching cruises, fishing trips and boats, but it’s the natural beauty of the area that seduces. Other towns in this area include St Georges Basin, Sanctuary Point, Callala Bay and Beach, Myola, Vincentia and Hyams Beach. The bay’s beaches are impressive a series of scalloped coves bracketed by rock formations and backed by blackbutt, tea tree and mahogany forest. The bay’s sparkling waters, the underwater topography of arches, caves and rock stacks, and an impressive marine population make this one of the finest dive sites in the state. At its southern end, Jervis Bay is enclosed by Booderee National Park, a
pristine coastal wilderness. From Wreck Bay village on Summercloud Bay in the park’s south, a walking trail circles the peninsula to St Georges Head, passing quiet beaches, cliffs and forests. Huskisson is the location of many facililties including the Lady Denman Heritage Museum, as well as a variety of great cafes and shops to explore. Hyams Beach is surrounded by natural bush and is far enough removed from the ‘rat-race’ to be as peaceful a retreat as one can imagine with the added attractions of pure white sand and crystal clear water. The story behind Lady Denman Lady Denman and sister ship Lady Scott were built at Huskisson by Joseph Dent for the Balmain New Ferry Company. Launched on 5 December 1911 Lady Denman sailed Sydney Harbour for 67 years, carried hundreds of thousands of passengers and celebrated her centenary in December 2011. The ferries were initially meant for a 15 year working life but continued to operate for decades, even after the Sydney Harbour Bridge opened. The Huskisson-built ferry collided with the Royal Navy submarine, HMS
Anchorite in 1960, ran aground off Neilson’s Point in 1965 and left her wharf without her Master embarked in 1976. Lady Denman was decommissioned in 1979 and returned to Jervis Bay in 1981. She is now on display at the Lady Denman Heritage Complex (see ad on page 35). Source: www.ladydenman.asn.au

Sussex Inlet Marine Centre
Sussex Inlet & Wandandian Sussex Inlet Situated 35km south of Nowra and 13km off the Princes' Highway, Sussex Inlet is a popular spot for water sports, being on the small river which connects St Georges Basin with the ocean. There is a population of some 4,000 permanent residents in Sussex Inlet and adjoining areas of Berrara, Cudmirrah and Swanhaven. A feature of the town is the housing development situated on a tidal canal system. The canal system has in fact caused the business area of Sussex Inlet to now be located on an island - It is known as the "Island Township". Activities include lawn bowling, fishing, sailing, golf, bingo, water skiing and swimming in sheltered waters. There are several boat hire businesses with small motor boats for hire. There are a large variety of wild birds in the area and kangaroos can be seen
feeding on the lawns of the houses at morning and evening. There are many accommodation businesses including caravan parks, cabins, motels, units and holiday homes available for rental. Sussex Inlet is the perfect place to enjoy some fishing with family and friends, turn to the next page to see our tidal chart with current tide times to help you plan your day.
Wandandian The town of Wandandian is located on the Princes Highway between Bewong and Fisherman’s Paradise. Its name comes from the word still used in the Parish of Wandrawandian, which according to older residents has an aboriginal meaning of 'home of lost lovers'. Wandandian’s beautiful rural atmosphere is enhanced by Kladis
Estate Wines, hobby farms, fruit orchards, galleries, arts and craft shops, antiques and nurseries.
What to See & Do ■ Bring your own or hire a bike and enjoy the great cycleways around Sussex Inlet. ■ Sussex Inlet is the perfect place for a weekend spent fishing, you can hire a boat or enjoy rock or beach fishing. ■ Enjoy a picnic at pretty Swan Lake, stay for the spectacular sunsets! ■ Take the kids for a bushwalk in the local surrounds. ■
Surfing is great at Cudmirrah Beach.

TIDE TIMES FEBRUARY NOTE - Time & Tide as at Fort Denison E.S.T.
Winery of the month: Kladis Estate Wines Already known for its pristine beaches and national parks, the Shoalhaven Coast is now emerging as Australia’s newest wine region. One of its most awarded wineries is Kladis Estate Wines at Wandandian, just 10 minutes from Jervis Bay, Sussex Inlet and St Georges Basin. Not only is Kladis Estate at Wandandian picturesque, with its beautiful gardens set against a backdrop of Wandean Ridge, but it’s also in perfect grape growing country thanks to Wandandian’s warm days, cool evenings and afternoon sea breezes from St George’s Basin. With Mediterranean heritage and several generations of winemaking behind him, Jim Kladis and wife Niki established Kladis Estate Wines. The winery is currently growing Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Merlot, Muscadelle, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Verdelho varieties. Jim and Niki believe that superior viticulture practices coupled with
an esteemed wine maker are key ingredients to producing wines of intense varietal flavour. In 2004 Kladis Estate engaged Steve Dodd as winemaker and expanded to include vineyards in the Hunter Valley and Adelaide Hills. With Steve at the helm, Kladis Estate is rapidly establishing a reputation for producing premium quality wines. In 2007 the winery was rated as a five star winery by James Halliday and went on to win International Gold and Silver Medals in the 2008 AWC– Vienna (the second-largest wine competition in the world). Boasting a string of other awards and prestigious recognitions, Kladis Estate is definitely worth a visit. Drop in for a tasting and a warm, personal welcome. The cellar door is open 7 days 10am – 5pm. Find Kladis Estate on the western side of the Princes Highway, Wandandian or call on 4443 5606 or visit www.kladisestatewines.com.au

WOW Watersports Fantastic Family Fun Says Mayor Shoalhaven Mayor Councillor Paul Green and his family recently enjoyed the Shoalhaven lifestyle while experiencing firsthand the excitement, adrenaline and family fun of a day out with Walking On Water (WOW) Watersports. Councillor Green’s wife, six children and a family friend celebrating her 18th birthday all took to the waters of Fisherman’s Paradise recently with WOW owner Simon Twitchen. “Simon was completely professional from the time we arrived and were fitted with lifejackets to the time we said goodbye,” Councillor Green said. As usual, Simon provided a full safety briefing before starting the day's activities. The day’s fun included introductory wakeboarding, rides on an inflatable called ‘the biscuit’ and a demonstration of the capabilities of the highperformance Stingray powerboat supplied by Nowra Powerboats. It was the first time wakeboarding for the mayor and his family and they all managed to get up and enjoy a ride, but it was the fun on the biscuit that was the highlight. “Riding the biscuit was great for family dynamics. “Parents have far too little fun with their kids these days and it was great
for me to be on with my sons and my wife on with our girls having fun together. “The adrenalin only adds to the fun with that little voice in your head that says “I will NOT let go”, and I didn’t”, he said. And would the mayor recommend the experience to other South Coast locals or visitors? “Absolutely. “It’s fantastic family fun at an affordable price in a region that is so well suited to this kind of activity with its beautiful waterways.
“With WOW Watersports, you don’t need to buy your own boat to enjoy this experience. “But, if you are considering buying your own boat a day with WOW Watersports is a great way to be introduced to the sports,” Councillor Green said. To arrange your day of fantastic family fun, contact Simon Twitchen at WOW Watersports on 0417 360 791 or visit www.wow-watersports.com.au See the ad on page 9 for more information about the experiences on offer.

Lake Tabourie - Cullendulla Bawley Point - East Lynne - Termeil - Durras - Kioloa Steamships were once built here at Bawley Point. Much of the timber used in the construction of these ships came from Termeil timber; a horse drawn train was loaded with logs and it clip-clopped its way into Bawley Point to be sawn by the timber mill, built in 1910, and at one time employing 72 men. Visitors to Bawley Point or to neighbouring literary-sounding East Lynne can enjoy tranquil beaches, headlands and lagoons where the prawns are a local delicacy, in season. Much of the area here has been reserved as a sanctuary for wildlife. Warm currents extend the swimming season with miles of quiet beaches and headlands fronting the south Pacific Ocean, which is studded with attractive small islands. Behind the coastline lie the lakes of Termeil, Meroo and Willinga, where vegetation and
picturesque views create an idyllic setting to the backdrop of Pigeon House Mountain. The district offers all kinds of fishing, surfing and swimming for all ages. For the bushwalker there are interesting paths to take through the bush or the Kioloa Forest. While in the district, seek out the small roadside cafes and shops where some of the walls and counters are thick with show awards for pies, rolls, cakes and other mouth-watering goodies - all produced in country kitchens.
This park features beaches, rock platforms, spotted gum forests and rainforest gullies, surrounding the beautiful Durras Lake. The extensive forest in the park is home to many animals. Eastern grey kangaroos, swamp and red-necked wallabies can be seen at dawn and dusk when they feed. Stay in a caravan, cabin or tent and enjoy everything the park has to offer - from walking and picnicking to swimming and fishing. Don't forget to visit Murramarang Aboriginal Area.
Murramarang National Park
Cullendulla Creek Nature Reserve
Murramarang National Park was created in 1973, with an area of 1970 hectares. The park was divided, into two sections north and south of Durras Lake, and included four offshore islands. In 2002 the park was increased to 11,978 hectares and now includes Durras Lake.
The reserve is on the northern shore of Batemans Bay and has beautiful views across to the Tollgate Islands. Explore the mangroves along a raised boardwalk. The unusual dune formations here are known as cheniers and are of great scientific interest.
Lake Tabourie Tourist Parkk Choose Lake Tabourie Tourist Park for your next family holiday. Located between the lake and the beach, the park is ideal for those who enjoy all manner of outdoor water activities. Within the park guests will enjoy:

There are plenty of great spots for beach, rock and blue water fishing, with a boat ramp nearby and plenty of well-tended bush walking trails on which to explore the botanical delights of Murramarang National Park. There are organised kids activities during Christmas holidays, including jumping castles and plaster painting.
Guests can also take advantage of the special deals to visit Mogo Zoo—just a short drive away in Batemans Bay— and enjoy fine dining at Merry Street Restaurant and Bar, which is within walking distance. With all that’s on offer, you could be excused for thinking a holiday at Merry Beach will be an expensive one, but rates start from just $25 per night for an unpowered camping site in low season.
