Roo Theatre presents The Full Monty Roo Theatre celebrated its 25th birthday on Saturday 25th February with a special performance of the musical The Full Monty. Now the public can also enjoy this hillarious comedy. The Full Monty is directed by Roo Theatre’s founder Gordon Streek. “With all the downturn in the local steel industry this show is particularly relevant”, Mr Streek said. “It has great music and good Aussie humour”. Based on the English film, the show tells the story of six unemployed Wollongong men—yes we have localised it—low on cash and prospects, who decide to present a strip act at a local club after seeing their wives' enthusiasm for a touring company of male strippers. To compete they threaten to go all the way, the full monty. As they prepare for the show, working through their fears, self-consciousness and anxieties, they overcome their inner demons and find strength in their camaraderie. Kiama - Jamberoo Kiama The coastal town of Kiama is said to gain it’s name from the aboriginal word Kiaram-a which when translated from the local aboriginal language “where the sea makes a noise”, is undoubtedly referring to the famous ‘Kiama Blowhole’. There is a wide assortment of things to do and see in the Kiama area. Walking tracks ensure that you can visit the Lighthouse, Kiama Harbour and both the Main and Little Blowhole with ease. Fishing, beach swimming and exploring the rock pools are also great activities. Some great cafes line the main street for those looking for a bite to eat and the Sandstone Terrace Shops make a great place to browse with friends. The Kiama Terraces in Collins Street date from around 1886 and are now classified by the National Trust. Many of the historical buildings can

also be viewed and a top heritage walk leaflet is available at the Kiama Visitor's Centre.

Jamberoo

Jamberoo was opened up for grazing in the 19th century and, at the time, much of the original rainforest was shipped out to Sydney as building material. Jamberoo was settled in the 1820's when it abounded in dense vegetation and rainforest. Jamberoo today is a small but quaint village and visitors will enjoy a leisurely drive out to the town past the rolling hills and countryside. Jamberoo still houses many of the original churches and the schoolhouse with the local pub's age dating back to 150 years ago. Fredericks General Store in Allowrie Street can provide you with a local map should you need one. Minnamurra Rainforest Reserve and Jamberoo Recreation Park are top

attractions in the area to check out and should not be missed when in the area. The rainforest reserve is home to abundant native wildlife and spectacular waterfalls whilst the Jamberoo Action Park is fun for the whole family!

What to See & Do

Gerroa is the closest town to Seven Mile Beach National Park, a grand and inspiring sweep of sand with an extensive dune system and a wealth of bird and mammal life. Gerroa developed as a holiday town, although Seven Mile Beach had been used for horse racing as early as the 1860s. In 1933, aviator Charles Kingsford-Smith used this beach as the runway for his pioneering flight across the Tasman to New Zealand. Gerroa offers easy access to several national parks and fine beaches as well as many of the prime attractions of the Illawarra, such as wineries, quaint country towns and historic attractions. North Werri Lagoon – A Family Favourite by Amanda Lawrence

In January’s recipe I inadvertently missed out the almond meal – thanks to all those who phoned to check the amount needed This is a variation of that recipe – it’s simple and quick and can be adapted to any fruit in season

The Lagoon at North Werri Beach has become our family favourite lately - it covers all the essentials. With the lagoon entrance currently open to the ocean, the water has been pristine – a stunning place for my two year old to swim, and “whoosh” through the incoming current. After our swim we wrap up and climb the sand dune to try and spot Daddy in the surf. He has found a left hander and we watch him on some nice waves. Then there are castles to build, and rocks to explore. We watch people on the costal walk from Kiama to Gerringong. It starts at Kiama Heights (Loves Bay) and finishes six kilometres later at the Werri Lagoon. This walk is definitely on my

list of things to do. But for the mean time I will continue to laze on the beach and smile, witnessing some amusing reactions as people reach the end of their trek and realise they have a compulsory lagoon wade, for some this is obviously unexpected! Loving life on the South Coast.

Kangaroo Valley The original inhabitants of Kangaroo Valley, the ‘Wadi Wadi’ people, shared the valley with kangaroos and other native species. In 1840 a local pastor declared “This valley takes its name from the numerous kangaroos which abound here”. From the early part of the 19th century, cattlemen like Richard Brooks and Cornelius O’Brien acquired extensive landholdings in the valley. They were followed by Irish settlers who, to the delight of their neighbours, brought with them their “moonshining” skills. Gradually more settlement took place and a patchwork of small farms spread out as far as the escarpments, mainly concentrating on dairying activities. In 1977 the pleasant ambience of the entire valley and village was recognised by the National Trust. An outstanding feature of Kangaroo Valley is the Hampden Bridge across

the Kangaroo River with its impressive castellated sandstone towers. Opened to coach and cart traffic in 1898, the bridge was named after the then Governor of New South Wales, Lord Hampden. While visiting Kangaroo Valley make sure you call in at the Pioneer Farm Museum, a time capsule of life as it was 150 years ago. Kangaroo Valley is both pretty and dramatic – remnants of rainforest cling to the steep escarpment, while the Kangaroo River and small creeks crisscross the valley. HopDog to release new season beers The South Coast’s newest micro brewery, HopDog BeerWorks, will launch its second range of seasonal beers this month, boasting new and creative flavours. Owner Tim Thomas and wife Tess have developed three new recipes to complement the foods more commonly eaten during cooler months: Alluvial Peach - brewed using peaches from the Arulean region of NSW and aged in French Oak barrels; an ageold method more common in wine production. Ham on Rye – a complex golden ale brewed with smoked German Rauch malt and hint of rye, giving an aroma of cracked pepper, smokey bacon and taste described as ‘a bacon sandwich in a glass’. This autumnal ale promises a dry finish and assertive taste. Coffee Pants – a strong dark coffee stout beer made by adding organic fair-trade coffee at two separate occasions during the fermentation process. Tim says this is a beer coffee lovers shouldn’t miss.

Stout is a style of ale, just bigger and darker than it's paler cousins. The new range’s release marks a milestone for the 200 litre nano-brewery that only commenced operation in mid 2011. The new beers will be released at a launch event on 25 March from 11am-2pm in the brewery tasting room. There will be a brewery tour at 11am followed by the launch and tastings. To complement the flavours of the new beers, a professional barista will operate on site while bacon and egg rolls are cooked on a barbecue. The new beers and all-season ranges will be available to purchase in standard bottles and 2-litre refillable bottles, called growlers. The Butterfactory & The Woodbox Cafe, Pyree This month, we caught up with Andrew Heffill, owner of The Butterfactory Restaurant and the Woodbox Cafe... Who taught you to cook? My mum and nanna. What inspired you to become a chef and restaurant and cafe owner/operator? I like food. I like everything to do with food. I enjoy meeting people and the social nature of the industry. I couldn’t think of anything else I’d rather be doing. Do you have a philosophy on food? ‘Fresh is best’ and ‘if it’s not perfect, don’t serve it’. Food has got to be fresh and visually appealing. I serve food that I like and that I hope others like too. If it’s made with local ingredients: even better. What are three things in your kitchen you can’t live without? My dishwasher, a good knife and good kitchen staff. What was your most memorable meal? A meal at La Trianon restaurant in Darling Point, Sydney. It was my sister’s 21st birthday and I was a teenager. It was the most amazing place I’d ever seen and it had an impact on me going into the hospitality industry. It showed

me what good hospitality can do for people. We still talk about that dinner as a family experience. What is your typical breaky? A cup of tea and piece of toast. Every good day starts with a cup of tea. What are you most proud of about the Butterfactory Restaurant and the Woodbox Cafe? That the Butterfactory is still here after six years and that people keep coming back because they enjoy it (people who came as guests are now friends) and how we support the local community. We also do lots of weddings. It makes my day to give people good memories of such an important day. What is your favourite dish from your menus? At the Butterfactory it’s our Seafood Tasting Plate. It’s a light and fresh entree, using local seafood. It’s delicious. At the Woodbox Cafe, it’s the hamburger. I enjoy a good hamburger so we’re doing a fantastic burger there you’ve just got to taste it!

St Georges Basin - Sanctuary Point - Callala Bay - Callala Beach - Myola - Huskisson - Vincentia - Hyams Beach Jervis Bay measures about 15 km from north to south and about 10 km across. The main town is Huskisson, where you can enjoy dolphin and whale watching cruises, fishing trips and boats, but it’s the natural beauty of the area that seduces. Huskisson is the location of many facililties including the Lady Denman Heritage Museum, as well as a variety of great cafes and shops to explore. Hyams Beach is surrounded by natural bush and is far enough removed from the ‘rat-race’ to be as peaceful a retreat as one can imagine with the added attractions of pure white sand and crystal clear water. Sussex Inlet & Wandandian Sussex Inlet Situated 35km south of Nowra and 13km off the Princes' Highway, Sussex Inlet is a popular spot for water sports, being on the small river which connects St Georges Basin with the ocean. There is a population of some 4,000 permanent residents in Sussex Inlet and adjoining areas of Berrara, Cudmirrah and Swanhaven. A feature of the town is the housing development situated on a tidal canal system. The canal system has in fact caused the business area of Sussex Inlet to now be located on an island - It is known as the "Island Township". Lake Tabourie - Cullendulla Bawley Point - East Lynne - Termeil - Durras - Kioloa Steamships were once built here at Bawley Point. Much of the timber used in the construction of these ships came from Termeil timber; a horse drawn train was loaded with logs and it clip-clopped its way into Bawley Point to be sawn by the timber mill, built in 1910, and at one time employing 72 men. Visitors to Bawley Point or to neighbouring literary-sounding East Lynne can enjoy tranquil beaches, headlands and lagoons where the prawns are a local delicacy, in season. Much of the area here has been reserved as a sanctuary for wildlife. Warm currents extend the swimming season with miles of quiet beaches and headlands fronting the south Pacific Ocean, which is studded with attractive small islands. Behind the coastline lie the lakes of Termeil, Meroo and Willinga, where vegetation and

picturesque views create an idyllic setting to the backdrop of Pigeon House Mountain. The district offers all kinds of fishing, surfing and swimming for all ages. For the bushwalker there are interesting paths to take through the bush or the Kioloa Forest. While in the district, seek out the small roadside cafes and shops where some of the walls and counters are thick with show awards for pies, rolls, cakes and other mouth-watering goodies - all produced in country kitchens.

This park features beaches, rock platforms, spotted gum forests and rainforest gullies, surrounding the beautiful Durras Lake. The extensive forest in the park is home to many animals. Eastern grey kangaroos, swamp and red-necked wallabies can be seen at dawn and dusk when they feed. Stay in a caravan, cabin or tent and enjoy everything the park has to offer - from walking and picnicking to swimming and fishing. Don't forget to visit Murramarang Aboriginal Area.

Cullendulla Creek Nature Reserve

Murramarang National Park was created in 1973, with an area of 1970 hectares. The park was divided, into two sections north and south of Durras Lake, and included four offshore islands. In 2002 the park was increased to 11,978 hectares and now includes Durras Lake.

The reserve is on the northern shore of Batemans Bay and has beautiful views across to the Tollgate Islands. Explore the mangroves along a raised boardwalk. The unusual dune formations here are known as cheniers and are of great scientific interest.
