April Happy Easter! With Easter celebrations and school holidays, the South Coast is the place to be this April. The centrepiece of the South Coast’s Easter celebrations is the traditional ‘Blessing of the Fleet’ in Ulladulla, with all the excitement of the parade, pilgrimage, traditional blessing ceremony, entertainment and fireworks display. There’s also plenty of excitement trackside, with the second event in Shoalhaven Turf Club’s Autumn Racing Carnival, the Greenwell Point Cup, on at the Archer Racecourse on Sunday 8 April. To see even more horsepower in action, Nowra Speedway has the ever-popular 410 Sprint Cars returning to head up a packed program of racing on Saturday 7 April. Then, return for Australia’s traditional automotive rivalry at the Ford versus Holden night on 21 April. For art lovers, there's the Currarong Easter Art Show from 7-15 April and the Lady Denman Heritage Complex’s art

exhibition Celebrating a Maritime Year, which is open until 27 May. Our winery of the month is Morrellis Wines. Their cellar door opens every weekend, but they have a special event for wine lovers on 22 April. Find out more in our article on page 17 and their Wine Trail ad on page 14. For shoppers, there’s the monthly markets as well as the hidden gems you’ll find in our South Coast Hidden Treasures feature (pp 4 - 5) and at Jindyandy Mill (p 31). Our article on page 13 has even more Easter holiday fun activity ideas. With so much to see and do, and so many wonderful places to dine and stay, the South Coast is the place to be this month. We hope you enjoy this edition as you explore all this region has to offer. See you around the South Coast.

Illawarra Fly Treetop Adventures The Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk is a unique 1500 metre rainforest walk, which includes the 500 metre long elevated steel structure walk through beautiful warm temperate rainforest nestled in the treetop canopy some 20 - 30 metres above ground level, with breathtaking views over the escarpment.

Who taught you to cook? My grandparents had a big influence on teaching me some basics about cooking, food was always a huge part of family get togethers. What inspired you to become a chef? The idea that my job could take me around the world. Do you have a philosophy on food? Fresh is definitely best and you need good quality ingredients to make that difference. Three things in the kitchen that you cant live without? Good quality knives, pasta roller and most importantly a committed team. Most memorable meal? Eating from a street vendor in a Malaysian street. Typical Breakfast? Coffee Dish your most proud of? House made gnocchi Favourite Dish from the menu? White Chocolate Cheesecake

A courtesy cart operates for visitors with limited mobility. More than a walk… Café 106 operates daily in the visitor centre.

Kiama © Howard Mitchell

Kiama - Jamberoo Kiama The coastal town of Kiama is said to gain it’s name from the aboriginal word Kiaram-a which when translated from the local aboriginal language “where the sea makes a noise”, is undoubtedly referring to the famous ‘Kiama Blowhole’. There is a wide assortment of things to do and see in the Kiama area. Walking tracks ensure that you can visit the Lighthouse, Kiama Harbour and both the Main and Little Blowhole with ease. Fishing, beach swimming and exploring the rock pools are also great activities. Some great cafes line the main street for those looking for a bite to eat and the Sandstone Terrace Shops make a great place to browse with friends. The Kiama Terraces in Collins Street date from around 1886 and are now classified by the National Trust. Many of the historical buildings can

www.southcoastimag.com.au

also be viewed and a top heritage walk leaflet is available at the Kiama Visitor's Centre.

Jamberoo

Jamberoo was opened up for grazing in the 19th century and, at the time, much of the original rainforest was shipped out to Sydney as building material. Jamberoo was settled in the 1820's when it abounded in dense vegetation and rainforest. Jamberoo today is a small but quaint village and visitors will enjoy a leisurely drive out to the town past the rolling hills and countryside. Jamberoo still houses many of the original churches and the schoolhouse with the local pub's age dating back to 150 years ago. Fredericks General Store in Allowrie Street can provide you with a local map should you need one. Minnamurra Rainforest Reserve and Jamberoo Recreation Park are top

attractions in the area to check out and should not be missed when in the area. The rainforest reserve is home to abundant native wildlife and spectacular waterfalls whilst the Jamberoo Action Park is fun for the whole family!

What to See & Do ■ Enjoy the many shops, boutiques and cafes. Check out the Kiama Terraces. ■ Take a walk in the Minnamurra Rainforest or head to Illawarra Fly Treetop walk. ■ Visit the famous Kiama Blowhole or to the Little Blowhole. ■ Be thrilled at Jamberoo Action Park.

Gerringong © Alan Nichol

Gerringong - Gerroa Gerringong Cleared by cedar cutters, Gerringong developed as a dairying village at the centre of rich pastures. More recently it has become a holiday town, popular with those who prize its beaches, glorious surroundings and proximity to Sydney. A variety of great quality accommodation is available as well as many shops and cafes in the main street to enjoy. The local Crooked River Winery has beautiful wine to both purchase or enjoy with a meal in their cafe whilst overlooking the picturesque pastures of the winery. Open on weekends, the Gerringong Heritage Museum is located in Blackwood St, displaying information about Gerringong’s interesting past. Gerroa

What to See & Do

Gerroa is the closest town to Seven Mile Beach National Park, a grand and inspiring sweep of sand with an extensive dune system and a wealth of bird and mammal life. Gerroa developed as a holiday town, although Seven Mile Beach had been used for horse racing as early as the 1860s. In 1933, aviator Charles Kingsford-Smith used this beach as the runway for his pioneering flight across the Tasman to New Zealand. Gerroa offers easy access to several national parks and fine beaches as well as many of the prime attractions of the Illawarra, such as wineries, quaint country towns and historic attractions. The award-winning Sea Vista Café

■ Visit the Village Craft Shop - they have very affordable, handmade gifts. ■ Enjoy a walk along the beach at Werri or Seven Mile Beach, or try surfing at Gerroa. ■ Take a dip in the rockpools at one end of Werri Beach or the natural lagoon at the other, perfect for kids. ■ Grab a meal at one of the cafes or restaurants around the main street.

Berry - Shoalhaven Heads Berry Set amongst rolling green hills with the backdrop of the stunning Cambewarra range, its striking landscape is unparalleled. Berry, the first truly rural town south of Sydney is a country experience like no other. Morrellis Wines: the relaxed vineyard in your backyard

Morrellis Wines, the newest addition to the emerging South Coast wine region, take pride in creating a relaxed, friendly atmosphere that reflects the South Coast’s lifestyle. Owners Isaac and Chris are now going a step further, making their Berry winery a ‘vineyard in your backyard’. On Sunday 22 April, Morrellis Wines is participating in the national ‘Vineyard in your Backyard’ event, promoted by Wine Australia. The event gives visitors at participating wineries the opportunity to meet winemakers and viticulturists, taste current vintage and museum wines and learn about wine through vertical tastings, barrel sampling and tours of wineries and vineyards. “We are focusing on wine education with blend your own wine workshops.

“Our entire range will be available for tasting, people will meet the winemakers and viticulturists, and Chris will be doing a special tasting to appreciate the versatility of Chardonnay with four styles of this popular variety,” Isaac says. The event will be on at the cellar door at 204 Bundewallah Road, Berry from noon until 6pm, with a free sausage sizzle from noon until 1pm. As well as sampling Morrellis Wines, visitors will also be able to take advantage of big discounts. Among the wines available for tasting and purchase will be the increasingly popular 2010 Cabernet Merlot and— Isaac and Chris’ personal favourite—the 2010 Chardonnay. Their signature wines: the 2010 Shiraz and the 2011 Verdelho will also be available. Isaac and Chris describe the 2011 Verdelho as the South Coast’s answer to the ever-popular New Zealand Sauvignon blanc, with its clean, crisp, acidic flavour that is best served lightly chilled. Morrellis Wines are available in a growing number of South Coast eateries, including Berry’s Pavillion Restaurant. Spots for the workshops are limited and bookings are essential. Call Morrellis Wines on 0413 161 216 or 0414 344 431 to book your place.

Kangaroo Valley Fudge House

Kangaroo Valley The original inhabitants of Kangaroo Valley, the ‘Wadi Wadi’ people, shared the valley with kangaroos and other native species. In 1840 a local pastor declared “This valley takes its name from the numerous kangaroos which abound here”. From the early part of the 19th century, cattlemen like Richard Brooks and Cornelius O’Brien acquired extensive landholdings in the valley. They were followed by Irish settlers who, to the delight of their neighbours, brought with them their “moonshining” skills. Gradually more settlement took place and a patchwork of small farms spread out as far as the escarpments, mainly concentrating on dairying activities. In 1977 the pleasant ambience of the entire valley and village was recognised by the National Trust. An outstanding feature of Kangaroo Valley is the Hampden Bridge across

the Kangaroo River with its impressive castellated sandstone towers. Opened to coach and cart traffic in 1898, the bridge was named after the then Governor of New South Wales, Lord Hampden. While visiting Kangaroo Valley make sure you call in at the Pioneer Farm Museum, a time capsule of life as it was 150 years ago. Kangaroo Valley is both pretty and dramatic – remnants of rainforest cling to the steep escarpment, while the Kangaroo River and small creeks crisscross the valley. Here you can enjoy the ideal ingredients of a short break – cafés, galleries, pubs, cabins in the bush and bushwalks. Kangaroo Valley Pottery located in the main street is a great place to pick up some local pottery and landscape artworks.

What to See & Do ■ Kangaroo Valley boasts some wonderful rural scenery- be sure to bring the camera and stop along the way for photo opp ortunities. ■ Visit the Kangaroo Valley Olives Centre processing facility and cellar door for fresh olive oil or tasty olives. ■ Stay overnight in your choice of great B & B ‘s and country home stays, some have won spectacular awards. ■ Join a kayaking or canoeing safari to Kangaroo River and Shoalhaven Gorge. ■ Visit Pioneer Museum Park - based on a typical 19th century farmhouse. ■ Kangaroo Valley is the perfect place for a bushwalk.

Kangaroo Valley - Australia’s most beautiful valley

Visitors and locals are still enjoying the sweet taste of Kangaroo Valley fudge after new owners Mick and Paula Woodney spent last summer restoring the original recipe that made it a favourite for a generation. They’ve learnt the original recipe from Kangaroo Valley Fudge House founders Dougall and Diane Blanch, and are making it the old fashioned way: by hand using the best quality ingredients and without artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. While Mick and Paula restore the famous Kangaroo Valley Fudge House flavours, the building’s owners are restoring the building to its original 1891 glory when it was home to the local branch of the English, Scottish and Australian Bank. The façade has been restored over summer. Work is now underway on the balcony, railings and decking. The Fudge House’s relaxed family-

friendly dining atmosphere has also been restored with Devonshire teas done the traditional way – with homemade ingredients served on vintage china. Other sweet delicacies on offer include peanut, macadamia nut and mixed nut brittles, and Australian, American, Dutch and New Zealand lollies. They are even scooping gourmet Norgen Vaaz and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream! Mick and Paula say the Fudge House is again a place people of all ages can come to relax and enjoy. Taste the fudge and the vibe for yourself next time you’re in Kangaroo Valley.

Nowra

www.southcoastimag.com.au

Bomaderry - Terara - Burrier - Yalwal The regional centre of Nowra, situated on the beautiful Shoalhaven River, is a bustling town which contrasts the pleasant laid back lifestyle enjoyed by locals. The broad Shoalhaven River offers a number of recreational possibilities such as fishing, boating and river cruises. Nowra is also a base for local adventure tour operators and options include canoe trips and skydiving. Nowra has a number of historic buildings and houses dating from the Victorian era. Heritage walks and other information can be picked up from the local Visitors Centre. One of the cultural delights of Nowra is nearby Bundanon, the rural property of the late Arthur Boyd which he gave to the nation to be used as a retreat for artists. Along with the district's many wonderful natural attractions, Nowra

itself provides an extensive selection of entertainment for all ages. Live entertainment is found at local clubs, hotels, halls and schools. Cinemas offer the latest releases and touring circuses pitch their colourful big tops throughout the year. The Fleet Air Arm Museum celebrates links with the aviation industry with a display of military and civil aircraft- it is well worth a visit. You can also explore Meroogal a historic timber gothic-style house with one of the most authentic 19th century interiors in NSW.

Terara

Original historic town with buildings dating back to 1850’s. The area is a prime agricultural region with great fresh local fruit and vegetable shops to buy local produce from. Use Millbank Road to cut through to Pyree and closer to the beach.

What to See & Do ■ Visit Gradys Riverside Retreat in Burrier - you can hire a canoe and explore the Shoalhaven River. ■ Picnic at one of the pretty parks located on the outskirts of Nowra and at Bomaderry (just north of Nowra). ■ Take a stroll through one of the walking trails in Morton National Park. ■ Stop for lunch at the ‘Boatshed by the Bridge’- they serve quality local food and wine.

VISITOR INFORMATION CENTRE The Shoalhaven Visitors Centre is the largest on the South Coast, located on the Princes Highway at Nowra - drop in or phone 4421 0778.

Pears are at their best, most flavoursome and in peak supply in Autumn. This recipe can use Williams, Packham or Beurre Bosc pears – we have used Williams. This recipe can easily be increased for a larger amount of pears which keep well in the fridge for up to a week and can be used for a variety of recipes once poached.

Ingredients 8-10 pears 750ml red wine 750 ml water 400g caster sugar Juice and peeled rind of one lemon 2 cinnamon sticks 6 cloves 2 star anise Peel the pears, leaving the stem intact (this makes it more attractive for presentation) – and toss in the lemon juice (this stops the pears from oxidising and turning brown). Heat red wine, water, caster sugar, lemon peel (no pith) cinnamon sticks, cloves and star anise until sugar has dissolved. Gently lower the pears into the syrup and gently poach (without boiling) until pears are tender – approx 30-50 mins depending on the ripeness of the pears. You can test this with a small sharp knife inserted into the pear. Leave the pears to cool in the liquid and serve at room temperature with cream or ice cream. For Pears Belle Helene – drain the pears and drizzle with melted chocolate.

410 Sprint Cars RETURN

Saturday 7 APRIL

Motor racing fans will be revved up to see some hotly contested racing action this month with two events at the Nowra Speedway. The ever-popular 410 sprint cars are returning to Nowra on Saturday 7 April for what is sure to be a popular night of speedway racing. That same night, the Wingless Sprints will also do battle for the IGA Nowra Speedway Track Championship, while the 1600s, Street Stock Sedans, Quarter Midgets and Karts classes contest the South Coast Titles. Because heavy rains caused some 2011-12 season events to be rescheduled or cancelled, two additional events have been added. Ford and Holden fans will have their chance to cheer on their drivers when this traditional Australian rivalry returns to Nowra Speedway for a Ford versus Holden night on Saturday 21 April, ahead of the final round of titles races on Saturday 12 May. Nowra Speedway Committee member and race organiser Warren Watt says that while cancelling or rescheduling race events because of bad weather was unfortunate, drivers are now more eager to make the remaining races count.

Jervis Bay

www.southcoastimag.com.au

St Georges Basin - Sanctuary Point - Callala Bay - Callala Beach - Myola - Huskisson - Vincentia - Hyams Beach Jervis Bay measures about 15 km from north to south and about 10 km across. The main town is Huskisson, where you can enjoy dolphin and whale watching cruises, fishing trips and boats, but it’s the natural beauty of the area that seduces. Other towns in this area include St Georges Basin, Sanctuary Point, Callala Bay and Beach, Myola, Vincentia and Hyams Beach. The bay’s beaches are impressive a series of scalloped coves bracketed by rock formations and backed by blackbutt, tea tree and mahogany forest. The bay’s sparkling waters, the underwater topography of arches, caves and rock stacks, and an impressive marine population make this one of the finest dive sites in the state. At its southern end, Jervis Bay is enclosed by Booderee National Park, a

pristine coastal wilderness. From Wreck Bay village on Summercloud Bay in the park’s south, a walking trail circles the peninsula to St Georges Head, passing quiet beaches, cliffs and forests. Huskisson is the location of many facililties including the Lady Denman Heritage Museum, as well as a variety of great cafes and shops to explore. Hyams Beach is surrounded by natural bush and is far enough removed from the ‘rat-race’ to be as peaceful a retreat as one can imagine with the added attractions of pure white sand and crystal clear water. Sussex Inlet & Wandandian Sussex Inlet Situated 35km south of Nowra and 13km off the Princes' Highway, Sussex Inlet is a popular spot for water sports, being on the small river which connects St Georges Basin with the ocean. There is a population of some 4,000 permanent residents in Sussex Inlet and adjoining areas of Berrara, Cudmirrah and Swanhaven. A feature of the town is the housing development situated on a tidal canal system. The canal system has in fact caused the business area of Sussex Inlet to now be located on an island - It is known as the "Island Township". Activities include lawn bowling, fishing, sailing, golf, bingo, water skiing and swimming in sheltered waters. There are several boat hire businesses with small motor boats for hire. There are a large variety of wild birds in the area and kangaroos can be seen

feeding on the lawns of the houses at morning and evening. There are many accommodation businesses including caravan parks, cabins, motels, units and holiday homes available for rental. Sussex Inlet is the perfect place to enjoy some fishing with family and friends, turn to the next page to see our tidal chart with current tide times to help you plan your day.

Wandandian The town of Wandandian is located on the Princes Highway between Bewong and Fisherman’s Paradise. Its name comes from the word still used in the Parish of Wandrawandian, which according to older residents has an aboriginal meaning of 'home of lost lovers'. Wandandian’s beautiful rural atmosphere is enhanced by Kladis

Estate Wines, hobby farms, fruit orchards, galleries, arts and craft shops, antiques and nurseries.

This has enabled Maz to spend more time sharing her skills through workshops. Held once a month in Milton, Maz will be conducting her workshops to teach adults, children and families. Using texture, painted paper, shells, acrylics and resin on canvas, this is a fast, fun, easy and affordable approach if you’ve always wanted to paint but didn’t know where to start.

The workshops focus on technique, layering and scraping through to the colours and textures underneath. Why not try something new this month, and get in touch with your creative side…you could be about to discover your new past time! Milton Theatre show in April Paul Greene - Behind the Stars Tour Saturday 21 April, 8pm For Paul Greene, success did not come overnight, but his slow and steady progression has seen him become a respected musician, earning him the mantle of 'Australia’s Hardest Working Musician'. He has worked with some of the worlds most respected artists, including Rob Hirst and Jim Moginie from Midnight Oil, Ani Difranco, Patty Griffin, Alvin Youngblood-Hart, and even The Wiggles. He is also the front man for Australian pub rock icons Spy V Spy.

His new album 'Behind The Stars' has a groove that creates involuntary dancing; infectious melodies; lyrics that make you forget they're songs, feeling more like conversations with a dear friend. There are gentle moments that he is renowned for with songs like 'Shine Like Gold' and 'Work Love Dance Trust', but this album also rocks. Tickets $27 from Country Leather, Milton 4455 3056 and Malibu Music, Ulladulla 4455 5693.

Bawley Point © Douglas Riley

Lake Tabourie - Cullendulla Bawley Point - East Lynne - Termeil - Durras - Kioloa Steamships were once built here at Bawley Point. Much of the timber used in the construction of these ships came from Termeil timber; a horse drawn train was loaded with logs and it clip-clopped its way into Bawley Point to be sawn by the timber mill, built in 1910, and at one time employing 72 men. Visitors to Bawley Point or to neighbouring literary-sounding East Lynne can enjoy tranquil beaches, headlands and lagoons where the prawns are a local delicacy, in season. Much of the area here has been reserved as a sanctuary for wildlife. Warm currents extend the swimming season with miles of quiet beaches and headlands fronting the south Pacific Ocean, which is studded with attractive small islands. Behind the coastline lie the lakes of Termeil, Meroo and Willinga, where vegetation and

picturesque views create an idyllic setting to the backdrop of Pigeon House Mountain. The district offers all kinds of fishing, surfing and swimming for all ages. For the bushwalker there are interesting paths to take through the bush or the Kioloa Forest. While in the district, seek out the small roadside cafes and shops where some of the walls and counters are thick with show awards for pies, rolls, cakes and other mouth-watering goodies - all produced in country kitchens.

This park features beaches, rock platforms, spotted gum forests and rainforest gullies, surrounding the beautiful Durras Lake. The extensive forest in the park is home to many animals. Eastern grey kangaroos, swamp and red-necked wallabies can be seen at dawn and dusk when they feed. Stay in a caravan, cabin or tent and enjoy everything the park has to offer - from walking and picnicking to swimming and fishing. Don't forget to visit Murramarang Aboriginal Area.

Murramarang National Park

Cullendulla Creek Nature Reserve

Murramarang National Park was created in 1973, with an area of 1970 hectares. The park was divided, into two sections north and south of Durras Lake, and included four offshore islands. In 2002 the park was increased to 11,978 hectares and now includes Durras Lake.

The reserve is on the northern shore of Batemans Bay and has beautiful views across to the Tollgate Islands. Explore the mangroves along a raised boardwalk. The unusual dune formations here are known as cheniers and are of great scientific interest.

Lake Tabourie Tourist Parkk Choose Lake Tabourie Tourist Park for your next family holiday. Located between the lake and the beach, the park is ideal for those who enjoy all manner of outdoor water activities. Within the park guests will enjoy:
