Kiama Coastal Walk © Kurt Douglas
Kiama - Jamberoo Kiama The coastal town of Kiama is said to gain it’s name from the aboriginal word Kiaram-a which when translated from the local aboriginal language “where the sea makes a noise”, is undoubtedly referring to the famous ‘Kiama Blowhole’. There is a wide assortment of things to do and see in the Kiama area. Walking tracks ensure that you can visit the Lighthouse, Kiama Harbour and both the Main and Little Blowhole with ease. Fishing, beach swimming and exploring the rock pools are also great activities. Some great cafes line the main street for those looking for a bite to eat and the Sandstone Terrace Shops make a great place to browse with friends. The Kiama Terraces in Collins Street date from around 1886 and are now classified by the National Trust. Many of the historical buildings can
www.southcoastimag.com.au
also be viewed and a top heritage walk leaflet is available at the Kiama Visitor's Centre.
Jamberoo
Jamberoo was opened up for grazing in the 19th century and, at the time, much of the original rainforest was shipped out to Sydney as building material. Jamberoo was settled in the 1820's when it abounded in dense vegetation and rainforest. Jamberoo today is a small but quaint village and visitors will enjoy a leisurely drive out to the town past the rolling hills and countryside. Jamberoo still houses many of the original churches and the schoolhouse with the local pub's age dating back to 150 years ago. Fredericks General Store in Allowrie Street can provide you with a local map should you need one. Minnamurra Rainforest Reserve and Jamberoo Recreation Park are top
attractions in the area to check out and should not be missed when in the area. The rainforest reserve is home to abundant native wildlife and spectacular waterfalls whilst the Jamberoo Action Park is fun for the whole family!
What to See & Do ■ Enjoy the many shops, boutiques and cafes. Check out the Kiama Terraces. ■ Take a walk in the Minnamurra Rainforest or head to Illawarra Fly Treetop walk. ■ Visit the famous Kiama Blowhole or to the Little Blowhole. ■ Be thrilled at Jamberoo Action Park.

New manager’s makeover revives Kiama Cove Boutique Motel Long renowned for its convenient location and stunning views, Kiama Cove Boutique Motel now also offers greater comfort, cleanliness and luxury thanks to a $100,000+ makeover, with more improvements on the way! Located in Bong Bong Street, Kiama Cove Boutique Motel is just a short walk from Kiama’s showground, shops, cafes and restaurants and overlooks picturesque Coronation Park and Surf Beach. New managers Simon Rorke and Janine Francis took over in January and immediately began giving the property a new lease of life. Improvements include new king, queen and king-single beds, complete with new linen, bedding and valances as well as new flat screen TVs with an improved selection of Pay TV channels. The executive apartment received new carpet, timber floors, contemporary colour scheme and larger flat screen TV. A new interconnecting room has been added to provide more room for families or couples travelling with parents. The whole property has also had a ‘spring clean’, with carpets steam cleaned throughout and air conditioners replaced in some rooms. Reception is now more user-friendly, with new reception desk and a TV
screen displaying images of the motel’s rooms and facilities. The exterior has received a fresh coat of paint and the previously closed rooftop deck area is being refurbished with barbeques and outdoor furniture to come so that guests will be able to enjoy the spectacular ocean views. The pool surface is scheduled to be repainted during the winter and new barbeques and outdoor furniture are on the way. There is even new fish for the fish pond – just to top it off. Despite the improvements, one thing that hasn’t changed is the affordable price list. Manager Simon Rorke says the improvements have had an immediate impact. “Guests are appreciating cleaner, more comfortable rooms. “We are seeing business travellers return and the apartment and interconnecting
rooms are proving popular with families. “The apartment is also being used by corporate clients and other groups staying at the motel,” Simon said. Kiama Cove Boutique Motel has partnered with Kennedy’s Tours to provide for guests’ coach travel needs. This service has been used to transport wedding guests and by other groups for local tours or visits. Most importantly, guests will be welcomed by new, friendly staff eager to help their guests. “We try to be as flexible as we can to help our guests. “Our motto is: ‘Nothing is a problem. If we can help you, we will’”, Simon said. To reserve a room at the refurbished Kiama Cove Boutique Motel, call 02 4232 4500 or visit www.kiamacove.com.au

It was first sighted by George Bass, when he anchored his whale boat in the sheltered bay now known as Kiama harbour, in December 1797. It is estimated that 600 000 people visit the Blowhole per year to view the spectacular plumes of water that can be seen when the seas are running from the South East. Only a short distance from the town centre and railway station, the Kiama blowhole has picnic areas and a rock pool nearby. A viewing platform with
disabled access gives good views of Kiama blowhole and surrounds. The Beach and Bush Cafe, Visitors Information Centre and toilets are also located nearby and are open 9am to 5pm. The Kiama Blowhole is accessible at all times and floodlit until 1am each morning For more information contact Kiama Tourism on 1300 654 262. Source: www.visitnsw.com

The South Coast is full of amazing scenery just waiting to be captured by keen photographers. Each month we select an outstanding image from our Flickr group and publish it with full credit to the photographer. May’s photo of the month is ‘We Three’ taken by Ian Ramsay, at the entrance of Moona Moona Inlet. The three seagulls were positioned on the flat rocks sheltering themselves from a strong wind. Gerringong - Gerroa Gerringong Cleared by cedar cutters, Gerringong developed as a dairying village at the centre of rich pastures. More recently it has become a holiday town, popular with those who prize its beaches, glorious surroundings and proximity to Sydney. A variety of great quality accommodation is available as well as many shops and cafes in the main street to enjoy. The local Crooked River Winery has beautiful wine to both purchase or enjoy with a meal in their cafe whilst overlooking the picturesque pastures of the winery. Open on weekends, the Gerringong Heritage Museum is located in Blackwood St, displaying information about Gerringong’s interesting past. Gerringong is a picturesque town located between the pristine Pacific
Ocean and flourishing farmlands with an abundance of activities to while away a weekend!
Gerroa
Gerroa is the closest town to Seven Mile Beach National Park, a grand and inspiring sweep of sand with an extensive dune system and a wealth of bird and mammal life. Gerroa developed as a holiday town, although Seven Mile Beach had been used for horse racing as early as the 1860s. In 1933, aviator Charles Kingsford-Smith used this beach as the runway for his pioneering flight across the Tasman to New Zealand. Gerroa offers easy access to several national parks and fine beaches as well as many of the prime attractions of the Illawarra, such as wineries, quaint country towns and historic attractions.

What to See & Do ■ Visit the Village Craft Shop - they have very affordable, handmade gifts. ■ Enjoy a walk along the beach at Werri or Seven Mile Beach, or try surfing at Gerroa. ■ Take a dip in the rockpools at one end of Werri Beach or the natural lagoon at the other, perfect for kids. ■ Grab a coffee, snack or meal at Sea Vista, Scoops or Zoobs in the town centre.

Hampden Bridge © $100 Tomato Pictures
Kangaroo Valley The original inhabitants of Kangaroo Valley, the ‘Wadi Wadi’ people, shared the valley with kangaroos and other native species. In 1840 a local pastor declared “This valley takes its name from the numerous kangaroos which abound here”. From the early part of the 19th century, cattlemen like Richard Brooks and Cornelius O’Brien acquired extensive landholdings in the valley. They were followed by Irish settlers who, to the delight of their neighbours, brought with them their “moonshining” skills. Gradually more settlement took place and a patchwork of small farms spread out as far as the escarpments, mainly concentrating on dairying activities. In 1977 the pleasant ambience of the entire valley and village was recognised by the National Trust. An outstanding feature of Kangaroo Valley is the Hampden Bridge across

the Kangaroo River with its impressive castellated sandstone towers. Opened to coach and cart traffic in 1898, the bridge was named after the then Governor of New South Wales, Lord Hampden. While visiting Kangaroo Valley make sure you call in at the Pioneer Farm Museum, a time capsule of life as it was 150 years ago. Kangaroo Valley is both pretty and dramatic – remnants of rainforest cling to the steep escarpment, while the Kangaroo River and small creeks crisscross the valley. Here you can enjoy the ideal ingredients of a short break – cafés, galleries, pubs, cabins in the bush and bushwalks. Kangaroo Valley Pottery located in the main street is a great place to pick up some local pottery and landscape artworks.
What to See & Do ■ Kangaroo Valley boasts some wonderful rural scenery- be sure to bring the camera and stop along the way for photo opp ortunities. ■ Visit the Kangaroo Valley Olives Centre processing facility and cellar door for fresh olive oil or tasty olives. ■ Stay overnight in your choice of great B & B ‘s and country home stays, some have won spectacular awards. ■ Join a kayaking or canoeing safari to Kangaroo River and Shoalhaven Gorge. ■ Visit Pioneer Museum Park - based on a typical 19th century farmhouse. ■ Kangaroo Valley is the perfect place for a bushwalk.

Kangaroo Valley - Australia’s most beautiful valley
Visitors and locals are still enjoying the sweet taste of Kangaroo Valley fudge after new owners Mick and Paula Woodney spent last summer restoring the original recipe that made it a favourite for a generation. They’ve learnt the original recipe from Kangaroo Valley Fudge House founders Dougall and Diane Blanch, and are making it the old fashioned way: by hand using the best quality ingredients and without artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. While Mick and Paula restore the famous Kangaroo Valley Fudge House flavours, the building’s owners are restoring the building to its original 1891 glory when it was home to the local branch of the English, Scottish and Australian Bank. The façade has been restored over summer. Work is now underway on the balcony, railings and decking. The Fudge House’s relaxed family-
friendly dining atmosphere has also been restored with Devonshire teas done the traditional way – with homemade ingredients served on vintage china. Other sweet delicacies on offer include peanut, macadamia nut and mixed nut brittles, and Australian, American, Dutch and New Zealand lollies. They are even scooping gourmet Norgen Vaaz and Ben & Jerry’s ice cream! Mick and Paula say the Fudge House is again a place people of all ages can come to relax and enjoy. Taste the fudge and the vibe for yourself next time you’re in Kangaroo Valley.

Shoalhaven Heritage Weekend - Museums & Memory Explore your Shoalhaven Heritage Weekend. The Shoalhaven Museum and Arts trail are celebrating International Museums day on the weekend of 19 and 20 May with all offering free entry to all their Museums over this period. Museums hold memories and tell stories - they have in their collections numerous objects that are basic to the memory of the communities we live in. These objects are the expression of our natural and cultural heritage. Many of them are fragile, some endangered and they need special care and conservation. International Museum Day 2011 will be an opportunity for visitors to discover and rediscover their individual and collective memory. Meroogal Manager, Sandra Lee said "Our Museum Trail group is looking forward to meeting new people and families over this weekend and Bundanon
to introduce them to our individual and unique properties and galleries. Shoalhaven has such a rich collection of stories and artefacts its a great opportunity to get out and explore them all - for free. Just how many museums you can fit into a weekend will be quite a challenge, but we hope people will be able to go to at least two or three". Over the weekend some museums will be open both days, others either Saturday or Sunday. Please check the ad below to make sure. Meroogal

St Georges Basin - Sanctuary Point - Callala Bay - Callala Beach - Myola - Huskisson - Vincentia - Hyams Beach Jervis Bay measures about 15 km from north to south and about 10 km across. The main town is Huskisson, where you can enjoy dolphin and whale watching cruises, fishing trips and boats, but it’s the natural beauty of the area that seduces. Other towns in this area include St Georges Basin, Sanctuary Point, Callala Bay and Beach, Myola, Vincentia and Hyams Beach. The bay’s beaches are impressive a series of scalloped coves bracketed by rock formations and backed by blackbutt, tea tree and mahogany forest. The bay’s sparkling waters, the underwater topography of arches, caves and rock stacks, and an impressive marine population make this one of the finest dive sites in the state. At its southern end, Jervis Bay is enclosed by Booderee National Park, a
pristine coastal wilderness. From Wreck Bay village on Summercloud Bay in the park’s south, a walking trail circles the peninsula to St Georges Head, passing quiet beaches, cliffs and forests. Huskisson is the location of many facililties including the Lady Denman Heritage Museum, as well as a variety of great cafes and shops to explore. Hyams Beach is surrounded by natural bush and is far enough removed from the ‘rat-race’ to be as peaceful a retreat as one can imagine with the added attractions of pure white sand and crystal clear water. Don’t miss See Change 2012 It’s on again! See Change Winter Arts Festival, the South Coast’s premier biennial community arts exhibition. Held over 16 days from Saturday 2 June to Sunday 17 June, the See Change Festival brings together more than 20 exhibitions and events in around 20 diverse venues including private residences, cafes, restaurants, galleries and museums. Hosted by Jervis Bay and Basin Arts Inc, the festival showcases the artistic talents of the Jervis Bay region and is supported by Festival Patron, former ABC TV presenter, host of SBS TV's Letters and Numbers, artist, speaker and Jervis Bay resident, Richard Moorecroft. “So many festivals are held around the world in big cities. “Here we have a wonderful, creative festival in the midst of the most beautiful natural environment. “So much of the time when we talk about arts festivals we tend to think of the visual arts, and the See Change festival is so much more than that,” Mr Moorecroft said. Festival organiser and Huskisson Gallery and Picture Framing owner, John Fimmano agrees. “See Change is not only a festival of art works, but a festival of activities including a literary lunch, music, guided walks and workshops.
“There are lots of things to choose from for the whole family,” he said. John says the level of interest is high, and encourages anyone planning to attend to book accommodation as soon as possible. Although not an official festival theme, the environment will be strongly reflected through the festival, as it coincides with World Environment Day on Tuesday 5 June. Special World Environment Day celebrations are planned at the Lady Denman Heritage Complex. (see p6). The festival website is under construction. Sussex Inlet & Wandandian Sussex Inlet Situated 35km south of Nowra and 13km off the Princes' Highway, Sussex Inlet is a popular spot for water sports, being on the small river which connects St Georges Basin with the ocean. There is a population of some 4,000 permanent residents in Sussex Inlet and adjoining areas of Berrara, Cudmirrah and Swanhaven. A feature of the town is the housing development situated on a tidal canal system. The canal system has in fact caused the business area of Sussex Inlet to now be located on an island - It is known as the "Island Township". Activities include lawn bowling, fishing, sailing, golf, bingo, water skiing and swimming in sheltered waters. There are several boat hire businesses with small motor boats for hire. There are a large variety of wild birds in the area and kangaroos can be seen
feeding on the lawns of the houses at morning and evening. There are many accommodation businesses including caravan parks, cabins, motels, units and holiday homes available for rental. Wandandian The town of Wandandian is located on the Princes Highway between Bewong and Fisherman’s Paradise. Its name comes from the word still used in the Parish of Wandrawandian, which according to older residents has an aboriginal meaning of 'home of lost lovers'. Wandandian’s beautiful rural atmosphere is enhanced by Kladis
Estate Wines, hobby farms, fruit orchards, galleries, arts and craft shops, antiques and nurseries.

Lake Tabourie - Cullendulla Bawley Point - East Lynne - Termeil - Durras - Kioloa Steamships were once built here at Bawley Point. Much of the timber used in the construction of these ships came from Termeil timber; a horse drawn train was loaded with logs and it clip-clopped its way into Bawley Point to be sawn by the timber mill, built in 1910, and at one time employing 72 men. Visitors to Bawley Point or to neighbouring literary-sounding East Lynne can enjoy tranquil beaches, headlands and lagoons where the prawns are a local delicacy, in season. Much of the area here has been reserved as a sanctuary for wildlife. Warm currents extend the swimming season with miles of quiet beaches and headlands fronting the south Pacific Ocean, which is studded with attractive small islands. Behind the coastline lie the lakes of Termeil, Meroo and Willinga, where vegetation and
picturesque views create an idyllic setting to the backdrop of Pigeon House Mountain. The district offers all kinds of fishing, surfing and swimming for all ages. For the bushwalker there are interesting paths to take through the bush or the Kioloa Forest. While in the district, seek out the small roadside cafes and shops where some of the walls and counters are thick with show awards for pies, rolls, cakes and other mouth-watering goodies - all produced in country kitchens.
This park features beaches, rock platforms, spotted gum forests and rainforest gullies, surrounding the beautiful Durras Lake. The extensive forest in the park is home to many animals. Eastern grey kangaroos, swamp and red-necked wallabies can be seen at dawn and dusk when they feed. Stay in a caravan, cabin or tent and enjoy everything the park has to offer - from walking and picnicking to swimming and fishing. Don't forget to visit Murramarang Aboriginal Area.
Murramarang National Park
Cullendulla Creek Nature Reserve
Murramarang National Park was created in 1973, with an area of 1970 hectares. The park was divided, into two sections north and south of Durras Lake, and included four offshore islands. In 2002 the park was increased to 11,978 hectares and now includes Durras Lake.
The reserve is on the northern shore of Batemans Bay and has beautiful views across to the Tollgate Islands. Explore the mangroves along a raised boardwalk. The unusual dune formations here are known as cheniers and are of great scientific interest.

5MINUTES WITH A FOODIE
Matt Upson
Chef & Co-owner of Merry Street Restaurant and Bar, Kioloa
Who taught you to cook? My mum, initially. Dad had a beautiful garden and we picked and cooked what was in season. What inspired you to become a chef and restaurant or cafe owner? My sister’s boyfriend had a restaurant, I thought that was cool. While I was at high school I was washing dishes. I started cooking on Sundays and they offered me an apprenticeship. I took it and I enjoyed it and I’ve never looked back. I guess owning a business of my own has always been up there on my list of things to do...Everyday brings a new challenge. Its definitely never boring! Do you have a philosophy on food? I believe in simplicity. Using fresh, local seasonal produce. I lean towards the Asian dining philosophy of eating and sharing. I try to use as much ethically killed or grown produce as possible. If it's fresh and at its peak it makes my job a lot easier. What are three things in your kitchen you can’t live without? Good staff, sharp knives, and dishwasher. What was your most memorable meal? The Grange Restaurant in Adelaide. It was awesome. I ended up working under Cheong Liew for a few years. This was a great place to learn and and use as a stepping stone to travel overseas. What is your typical breaky? Poached eggs or my new favourite, porridge with grated apple, cinnamon and brown sugar, which I unwillingly share with my 15 month old son. What are you most proud of about your restaurant or cafe? Seeing people come back and enjoy the food, space and philosophy we have created. What is your favourite dish from your menu? Our mixed entree plate. It may include snapper sashimi, Portuguese fish cake, tempura oysters and chargrilled prawns with green pawpaw salad. Its ever changing and gives us a chance to have a play around with lots of different flavours.

Southern Lakes paddling & camping gems The Southern Illawarra and Shoalhaven are a paddler’s paradise. Nothing beats this activity for getting up close and personal with the area’s watery delights. There’s a string of beautiful lakes lining the southern Shoalhaven coast. Lake Conjola, Burrill Lake and Durras Lake are the largest and most easily accessible, but Meroo National Park south of Ulladulla hides several smaller gems. In Meroo National Park, combine lake paddling with camping. Termeil Point off Blackbutt Road gives access to Termeil Lake, while Meroo

Head at the end of Meroo Point Road is a good base for paddling Meroo Lake. In both cases there’s a portage to get your craft to the water.
