A riotous night of sheer madness and mayhem !! He is joined by his formidable wife, Sybil, of whom he is terrified; Polly, the most competent member of staff and Manuel, a hapless, confused Spaniard, from Barcelona. Directed by Andrew Forbes, and performed by talented cast and crew members of this much loved Highlands Organisation, "Fawlty Towers" promises to be a joyous experience and a warming treat for these Wintry months.
The Highlands Theatre Group presents its' unique, local interpretation of "Fawlty Towers" Written by John Cleese and Connie Booth, this iconic television series, set in a 1970's Hotel in the UK, is one of the finest farcical situation comedies ever made. Basil Fawlty, the manic, sycophantic and sadistic Manager believes he could "run a first rate hotel, if he didn't have the guests getting in the way!" "QuĂŠ?" From the Editor June Welcome to the Southern Highlands and surrounding areas during our first winter month. Winter in our region is the season for enjoying a leisurely afternoon drive, sleeping in, taking an early morning walk, or just 'tucking in' to some of those comfort foods that you can really only justify in winter. Treat yourself to a bushwalk or a picnic and enjoy the smell of the Eucalypts and the absolute peace and quiet of winter in the bush. See page 32 for details of our picturesque dams, lookouts, waterfalls and walking tracks throughout the Highlands and surrounding areas. Once again the Highlands Theatre Group will present the kind of performances that theatre goers in the Highlands have come to love and expect. For a night of madness and mayhem go along to a local interpretation of "Fawlty Towers", written by John Cleese and Connie Booth.
Take the Kids, take grandma, to IFly 4 Kids during the school holidays in July. The program kicks off with Erths’ Petting Zoo. Erth Visual & Theatre Inc is an Australian theatre company that creates incredible, large scale, life - like puppets of Australian mega-fauna. Full details can be found at www.illawarrafly.com.au Of course, Train Works in Thirlmere, is a 'must visit' attraction in our area. The centre is currently holding an exhibition, 'Innovation by Accident', which details some of the innovative improvements implemented by the railways throughout the years. The exhibition is on until 12 July. As you travel throughout our region, be sure to carry your iMag with you. Have a safe and happy stay! Linda

Camden, Narellan, Campbelltown Macarthur - the best of both worlds! Where can you find a vibrant city with modern delights, enjoy the tranquillity of nature reserves and historic charm, but also revel in adrenalin packed activities. Macarthur is less than an hour’s drive south-west of Sydney and includes the cities of Campbelltown and historic Camden. Throughout the region, the history of colonial settlement is reflected in the large number of heritage listed buildings; Camden Park House and Macarthur Park are fine examples of 19C architecture prevelent in the area. The Macarthur district played a significant role in the birth of the Australian Wool, Wine and Wheat industries. History books tell us that John Macarthur was responsible for our success as producers of fine Merino Wool, but historical records show that Elizabeth Macarthur, his wife, played a larger role than he did. John & Elizabeth Macarthur established convict built Belgenny Farm on part of the original 5000 acres granted to the family by Lord Camden in 1805. Today, Belgenny Farm is a major educational centre with direct links to our agricultural history. It offers specialised educational and environmental tours, giving young people and special interest groups a chance to learn about agriculture and its history in NSW. Macarthur is rich in history but also in art & culture. There is a diverse range of cultural venues including a number of small boutique art
galleries such as Struggletown Fine Arts Complex. Campbelltown Arts Centre and the Campbelltown Entertainment and Exhibition Centre are the entertainment heart of Macarthur. Macarthur is bordered by scenic hills, nature reserves and the Georges and Nepean Rivers. The beauty of the nature reserves and wildlife trails will surprise and delight with spectacular flowing streams, rock escarpments and native flora and fauna. For a superb day out, visit one of Macarthur's most interesting attractions; Australian Botanic Gardens, Mount Annan offers a lovely family day out in the midst of 416 hectares of Australian bushland. The facility includes picnic areas, a restaurant, over 10 kilometres of walking tracks and a native flora research facility and NSW Seedbank.

What’s New at Boyd Gallery
BOYD GALLERY Fine Australian Art
Boyd Gallery at Narellan has been leading the art scene in Macarthur for over 25 years. In February, new owners Rowan and Pania Gregson, relaunched the local icon, now sporting a fresh new look, with an event to support local charity, The Right Start Foundation. Pania Gregson, Camden Mayor Greg Warren, Russell Matheson MP, Rowan Gregson at the re-launch of Boyd Gallery on 23 February. “The local community has supported the gallery for the past 25 years so we wanted to give something back,” Rowan Gregson said. “A portion of proceeds from all of our opening nights will be donated to the Foundation,” he said. Another new initiative will be a series of ‘Dinner with the Artist’ events, run in conjunction with Lexie’s Restaurant, situated behind the gallery. Under new management, the restaurant has a more contemporary look and menu which is fast becoming a favourite with locals. The first will be a French-inspired food and art event to coincide with Bastille Day in July. The exhibition, aptly titled “Viva la France!”, will showcase Frenchthemed works by regular Boyd Gallery artists Greg Jarmaine, James Boissett, Patrick Carroll and others. Guests will be able to preview the exhibition with champagne and canapés and then enjoy a specially created menu with some of the artists. www.highlandsimag.com.au
Bundanoon Berrima - a shoppers paradise Berrima is a unique, historic village offering a day tripper the most wonderful array of food and shopping experiences in a living history environment. Established as a township in 1831, Berrima is a preserved Australian, Georgian, colonial town. It is located in a picturesque valley on a bend of the Wingecarribee River. The town was laid out in the manner of an English village around a village green. The centre of the village today is a living museum, with many of the original buildings, including the gaol, still providing a unique atmosphere within the town. The area is famous for its bushranger activity in the late 1800s. Today, Berrima is a favourite day trip destination for Sydneysiders and Illawarra and Canberra residents. It offers exquisite boutique shopping, antiques and great food. Moss Vale, the Shire Capital Moss Vale is the gateway to the Hume Highway and the Illawarra and is central to Southern Highland townships and villages and to Highland attractions. The town retains an atmosphere and charm of yesteryear due to an effort to preserve and restore old public buildings and private homes. Some buildings date to the 1860s 1890s, the Old Post Office. The Moss Vale Hotel, Court House and the historic Railway Station are fine examples of the 19C architecture. Leighton Gardens, in the centre of town, is as pretty as a picture in spring and autumn with massed displays of flowers and shrubs.

Bundanoon, a "place of deep gullies". Early industries in the district included timber milling, sandstone quarrying and farming. Today Bundanoon retains many of its early 20C buildings and has a 'yesteryear' charm about it. Bundanoon has its share of interesting craft shops, art galleries, cafes, restaurants, nurseries and picnic areas. You can hire a bike, walk through nearby Morton National Park, enjoy picnic spots, native flowers and birds and see kangaroos and wallabies at dusk on the edge of town. Take a walk to "Glow Worm Glen" and discover how the Glow Worms live and glow. Bundanoon is a bushwalkers paradise with fourteen suggested walks; most have vantage points with spectacular views across the valleys. Probably the most visited lookout is the one overlooking the Grand Canyon 3km from the town centre.

Tertini Wines is one of the most awarded wine producers in the Southern Highlands. Our wines are subtle and elegant, with excellent fruit characters arising from the long, slow ripening period and our commitment to low cropping levels, hand pruning and hand picking. Robertson Potato Farm
Robertson
www.highlandsimag.com.au
The green heart of the Highlands Robertson is a pretty rural village with breath-taking scenery, spectacular waterfalls and rainforests in nearby National Parks. Lush surrounding farmland and country lanes complete the picture for this 'not to be missed' visitor friendly village, which lies at the edge of the Southern Highlands. In Robertson, you’ll find cosy cafes and restaurants, antiques and collectables, galleries with regular exhibitions, and a heritage railway station in landscaped gardens. Many shops specialize in goods that are both hand - made and Australian. The building known as ‘The Cheese Factory’ is a ‘must see’ in Robertson as it now houses a collection of shops offering, cheese, gifts, craft and collectables. The village is worth visiting both for itself, and as an ideal base to explore a spectacular hinterland, it is recognized as the “green heart” of the Southern Highlands on account of its superb rural scenery. Ridge roads with sweeping views contrast with sheltered tree-clad lanes, making this a delightful place for a scenic drive. There is much to discover. Stud cattle, sheep and alpacas graze green pastures. Rich, deep, red soils grow the legendary “Robbo Spuds” - Australia’s most sought-after potatoes. Robbo Spuds are always on sale in season (December to April). All this and more in a picturesque village where people are friendly, parking is easy and there is a genuine country town atmosphere.
Nearby are three of the longest drop waterfalls in Australia. They all plunge from rugged sandstone escarpments into rainforest canyons and valleys. Barren Grounds nature reserve has wonderful wild flowers and easy plateau walks to coastal views. The Illawarra Fly turns exploring the cliff tops into a great adventure with treetop walkways, a soaring tower, and sweeping coastal vistas from Port Kembla to Kiama. Further afield you can find Fitzroy Falls which offers scenery on a grand scale. Waterfalls, sandstone cliffs, lush rainforest gullies and sweeping views of the escarpment are a good reason for visitors to include this area in your tour of the Southern Highlands. There are several walks to choose from; a timber boardwalk to the falls, or for the more adventuresome a 7km walk into a rainforest gully. The Fitzroy Falls Visitor Centre is open seven days and provides a range of information on Morton National Park and other places to visit in the area. The Falls Café offers a selection of tasty home cooked meals or simply coffee and cake in a bush environment. Barbecue facilities, toilets, picnic shelters all with disabled access. Open seven (7) days per week 9am to 5pm. (02) 4887 7270. Park Use fee applies.

Historic Homes in Goulburn
Goulburn
www.highlandsimag.com.au
Australia’s first inland city Goulburn is a thriving rural and commercial centre and offers country style living and hospitality. The city is rich in heritage and natural beauty and any visitor interested in the history and development of this beautiful city will be delighted during guided and self guided tours of historic sites, homesteads, cathedrals, cemeteries and points of interest. The first white explorers sited the land that was to become the first inland city from Mt. Towrang in 1798, but it was not explored until some 20 years later. Governor Macquarie declared it the Goulburn plains in 1820. Land seekers settled the area from 1818 onwards. By 1841 Goulburn had a population of some 1,200 people - a courthouse, police barracks, churches, hospital, post office and was the centre of a great sheep and farming area. It became an administrative centre for the district taking in surrounding townships for the new County Argyle. It is home to the Big Merino & the NSW Police Academy and its secondary industry is based on a mix of private and Government enterprise. In the private sector, firms are engaged in wool scouring, cotton products, footwear, heavy and light engineering, building related undertakings, retail distribution and concrete products. St Saviour's Cathedral 1874 to 1884 - one of the finest white sandstone cathedrals in the Southern Hemisphere. The splendid bell-tower, soaring windows and massive stone work are the first impressions one has of the building. The Cathedral and Hall were

designed by Edmund T. Blackett at the peak of his career. The Forster and Andrews organ contained 43 stops and 2252 pipes when installed but has been modified several times since. It is regarded as one of the best pipe organs in Australia and one of the most sought after by organists. Ph: 4821 2206 Goulburn Historic Waterworks - a part of Australia's heritage The Goulburn Historic Waterworks is located on the banks of the Wollondilly River. It has fully operational steam engines; the 1883 Appleby Bros. beam engine and the 1860s Hick Hargreaves corliss valve engine. The beam engine dates to the 1880s when it was installed to pump water for Goulburn. The Waterworks is of national significance as it is the only complete, workable, steam powered municipal water supply left in its original location in the Southern Hemisphere. It is steaming again after an absence of over two years due to essential maintenance on the boiler. The Pumphouse Café serves locally produced meals and has a retro-style theme. Ph: 4823 4448 Riversdale Historic Homestead – a historic 1830s Inn Riversdale was purchased in 1875 by Edward Twynam who later became Surveyor General of NSW. It was acquired by the National Trust in 1967 from the Twynam family and is set in beautiful flowering gardens. The Inn is furnished as a mid-19th century colonial cottage. It is an ideal venue to just have a picnic or to book a function, a wedding or a christening. Mob: 0414 951 955

Wollongong - where the mountains meet the sea! Wollongong is located 80 kilometres south of Sydney and is bordered by the Royal National Park to the north, Lake Illawarra to the south and the Illawarra Escarpment to the west. The Wollongong coastline offers 17 sparkling surf beaches that are patrolled by lifesavers from September to April. Beaches are generally in easy walking distance from shops, hotels and clubs. Stanwell Park to the north of Wollongong City, could be regarded as the gateway to the Illawarra region and is an ideal spot for day trippers. Bald Hill Lookout, a magnificent platform looking south over Wollongong City, has outstanding views of the Illawarra and its escarpment. Watch hang gliders and para gliders or marvel at the spot
where Lawrence Hargrave first took flight. Experience the Grand Pacific Sea Bridge, 665 metres over-the-ocean, near Stanwell Park; spend some time exploring northern coastal villages while heading down the cliff hugging roads hanging above the ocean. North of Wollongong the coastal villages are famous for their unspoilt beaches and rock pools, unique art and crafts, great fishing and surfing spots as well as many cafes and restaurants. From those northern villages, the Grand Pacific Drive makes its way into the city of Wollongong. It's full steam ahead for Goulburn Waterworks! After an absence of two years it’s full steam ahead at Goulburn Historic Waterworks. Major work to the boiler has recently been completed allowing the 1883 Appleby Bros beam engine and the 1866 Hick Hargreaves Corliss valve steam engine, both rare engines, to be in operation one Sunday of each month (except August). Built between 1883 and 1885 the beam engine began pumping water to the residents of Goulburn in January 1886. It was shut down in 1977 and has operated as a museum ever since. It is now the only complete, operational beam engine left in its
