To celebrate this milestone, the Highlands Theatre Group will be performing Pride And Prejudice this April. Autumn in Bowral
From the Editor March Autumn is a most delightful time to visit the Southern Highlands region and an ideal time to enjoy the host of shows and festivals on offer. The village of Thirlmere will host the Thirlmere Festival of Steam this month. You can enjoy all the fun of a country fair with entertainment, parades, plus guided tours of the Rail Museum. There is something for music lovers when Bowral hosts the annual Music Festival. This is an annual event of concerts and recitals, of high quality classical chamber music, at the Anglican Church St Jude in Bowral and at the Mittagong Playhouse. Don’t miss the Rose Festival in Goulburn this month. The festival will feature rose displays, bus tours of the public rose gardens, an art exhibition, demonstrations and market stalls. There will be loads of other events throughout March to mark the establishment of Goulburn as a city 150 years ago.
Contents
If you enjoy a good old - fashioned country show, then we have four on offer. Robertson, Moss Vale, Goulburn and Camden Shows will provide all the excitement of large regional shows with the usual line up of interesting agricultural attractions as well as novelty events and sideshows. An annual ‘standout’ festival in the Southern Highlands is Brigadoon in Bundanoon. Held each year in April, the gathering of the clans means that festivities will include a street parade, massed pipe bands, dancing, games, displays and more. All to celebrate this important Scottish event! The Robertson Railway Committee will host a Vintage and Classic Car Day during April as well. The day will be made special with displays of restored and functioning vintage and working machinery. Enjoy your stay and as always carry your iMag with you.

Moss Vale faces Minor invasion at Easter 30 March 10-4pm
The Southern Highlands is preparing for a British invasion over Easter, but the invaders come for peace, not war. More than 100 Morris Minors and their owners, companions and families have registered for the 16th National Morris Minor Rally, a biennial gathering of car lovers, which will be headquartered at the Moss Vale Showgrounds. The rally is being hosted by the Southern Highlands Morris Minor Car Club (more info: www.shmmcc.net or ph 0438 691 259). The first national Morris Minor Rally was held in the region 32 years ago. Most of the cars will arrive in the region under their own steam, with enthusiasts driving from as far afield as Tasmania and Perth. Almost everyone has a Morris Minor story, owners are regularly approached at local car shows by passers-by who say: ‘My first car was a …’ or ‘My uncle had two…’ The first Morris Minor was unveiled at the Earls Court Motor Show in London in 1948, although work designing a car for a typical English family started in
18 www.monthlyimag.com.au
1943, and the last produced in the UK was completed on 12 November 1970. And, while they may not have quite the same cachet as a Talbot or a Rolls Royce, Morris Minors are enduring and easily worked-on cars nonetheless, that regularly top classic car popularity polls. Many of the cars visiting over Easter will be standard and, while the purists may frown, Morris Minors are robust enough to also be updated with more modern engines, suspension, brakes and comforts. The cars will be on display at the Moss Vale Showgrounds between 10 am and 4 pm on Saturday, 30 March, and will be driven, in loose convoy through the district on Sunday.

Three Day Music Festival in Bowral www.bowralautumnmusicfestival.org.au The seventh Annual Bowral Autumn Music Festival will be conducted from March 22nd to 24th 2013 It has been titled “A Little Bit French” and will contain music by some of the great composers of the French Romantic and Impressionist periods. It will not be exclusively French, however, and some favourites such as Bach, Brahams and Schumann are also included. Emma-Jane Murphy, who is returning from Italy, will be joined by some of Australia’s top chamber music performers, including Charmian Gadd and the Festival’s Artistic director, Yvette Goodchild. This year’s festival includes two organ recitals- the “Young Organist Recital” on
Friday at 4.30pm and a recital by David Drury on Saturday at 2.30pm. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience the newly restored organ at St Jude’s. This festival will be a highlight in the calendar for March. It brings together music lovers and performers in the Autumnal splendour of the Highlands and the historic setting of St Jude’s Church. Full details available on: www. bowralautumnmusicfestival.org.au Tickets for the entire festival or individual concert are available from Mittagong Tourist information Centre 48712888 Further details contact Roma Dix on 4871 1086

You are welcome to visit Cellar Door and enjoy award winning wines and ciders that brothers, Anton and Mark, produce on site at Mundrakoona Estate. Recent awards include 2011 Artemis Riesling, rated at 95/100 and part of the 2012 Citibank NSW Wine Awards “Best of the Best Top 40”. The popular Sunshack Apple and Pear Ciders are also available at cellar door.
The first vineyard that you discover once you leave the M5 motorway from Sydney is The Hermitage vineyard, the home of Marist Brothers Wines. Originally acquired over 100 years ago for the training of the Brothers, the 155-hectare estate is today a sacred place of quiet and tranquility. In addition to the assortment of cool climate wines produced on the 13 hectare vineyard, including sauvignon blanc, riesling, pinot gris, pinot noir and merlot, a selection of homemade jams and relishes is also available for you to taste. $2 Coffee available as well as a range of orchids. Not to be missed on your visit is a viewing of the beautifully restored neo- gothic style chapel.

The 2013 Robertson Show There are so many highlights associated with Robertson’s annual show it’s hard to single out any particular event. From the moment the gates open on Friday, March 1st until the spectacular fireworks display the following evening, this year’s show program promises to be one of the best ever presented with something for all members of the family. Over the two days, the spotlight will shine on the centre ring where horse and rider team up to impress the judges as they strive for the elusive championship ribbons. Early indications are that the Hindmarsh Pavilion will be a popular venue as patrons cast their eyes over a vast number of categories including craft, needlework, flowers and cakes on display. Don’t forget the high quality exhibits
with the Dairy and Beef cattle strutting their stuff while numbers in the poultry and dog sections have surpassed all expectations. Throw in a host of novelty events such as the Great Australian Potato Race, Demolition Derby, Push Bikes and Gig Races, Women’s Pumpkin Lawn Bowls, Weight Judging Competition, Hay Stacking and the unusual rides for those who like to be daring, while those wanting to test their appetite can enter the Pie Eating Competition. Old timers will be able to recall memories of the past when the Berrima District Old Machinery Club promotes an intriguing range of machines from days gone by. Sundowner: Theatre Tackles ‘Taboo’ Subject Of Alzheimer’s
Sundowner explores the fear, humour and dignity of those living with younger onset dementia. The work combines theatre, dance and physicality in an inter-generational story of lament and at times, grief and sorrow. Ultimately though, it is a story of love: love of family, love of history and love of life.
Leading performance company KAGE’s deeply moving work Sundowner is soon to commence a four-month tour to 32 venues across Australia that includes a stop at Illawarra Performing Arts Centre, Wollongong.
The Potter’s Brush: John Kuczwal & Marino Moretti. John Kuczwal, Rainforest, 2012, reduced pigment lustre on earthenware, 31cm bowl.
The Urns Project: Sally Gray Funerary urn, Wollongong. Photography Sally Gray, 2012.
The realm of memory remains a great mystery. Through the eyes of three generations, Sundowner tells the story of so many Australian families. If a loved one starts to lose their memories, what role can we play in holding on to them? And how can we care for them in the present while honouring their memory?
