Whale watching at Port Macquarie just keeps getting better Whale watching on Australia’s Holiday Coast is by far the region’s biggest winter tourist attraction. Majestic Humpbacks on their northern migration pass within 2km of the Tacking Point lighthouse at Port Macquarie. This is where expectant females slow down or rest as they feel the ocean temperature rise to above 18 degrees, knowing that they can safely give birth in the North Coast’s warmer sub tropical waters. Last year 26 baby humpbacks were seen by Cruise Adventures as they travelled north from Port Macquarie. The males and others on the other hand generally keep a steady pace, blowing robustly and ploughing along towards the mating grounds further north. Seeing these gentle giants surfing the northbound swell is spectacular. Port Macquarie Cruise Adventures is the longest established whale watching cruise boat operator at Port Macquarie with 6,000 trips logged so far. All vessels are powered by quiet, economical 4-stroke outboards and carry a maximum of 12 passengers to sea. Discovery - A 12 metre fast catamaran, suitable for all ages and most weather conditions. She is an ex-police force vessel which has been perfectly refitted for whale watching.

Whalewatchers can spread out along one side on the boat for perfect front row viewing and photography. Discovery gives you a quiet, personal and whalefriendly experience on a big boat even in the rain. Apollo 1 and 2 - Two red 8.5 metre Naiad RIBs (rigid inflatable boats). These 2 vessels give you the cream of close & personal whale watching experiences and are definitely the fastest and most stable vessels on the open sea. Whales love red boats. Gemini RIB rides to the whales. This is a fast but easy ride to the whales on an eco-friendly supercharged 8.5 metre RIB. This is not for the faint hearted or small children but safe and stable as a whale watching platform. Cruise Adventures has won the prestigious regional tourism awards for environmental tourism. Part of the enterprise is the Dolphin & Whale Watching Centre, a front line ticket office promoting environmental awareness

and protection of whales, dolphins and marine life. This eco-tourism business is now firmly entrenched as part of the global billion dollar whale watching industry. Find the centre on the wharf at the north end of Short Street, Port Macquarie. If you want to stay on dry land, Tacking Point Lighthouse or the coastal headland walking tracks provide perfect whale viewing points. For people not keen to go in the ocean the 100km of waterways at Port Macquarie is home to bottle nosed dolphins and a variety of marine life. Cruise Adventures also operates 2 shallow draft river cruise boats on dolphin spotting cruises in the river system & wetlands. This is a gentler way to see marine mammals close up. Cruise Adventures eco-cruises are the only cruises to the national park where dolphins, endangered Osprey eagles, kangaroos and koalas are often seen, and visit Oyster World, a working oyster farm. If you are in the area phone the Dolphin & Whale Watch Hotline at Port Macquarie on 1300 555 890 for more information or a whale or dolphin update. Whale & dolphin cruises depart up to 20 times daily from early morning to sunset. WIRES: NSW Wildlife Information and Rescue Service WIRES (the NSW Wildlife Information and Rescue Service) is the largest wildlife rehabilitation organisation in Australia. It is a voluntary, non-profit, non-political organisation operating across NSW.

Reward Your Senses at Sea Acres It’s 9 am and Sea Acres Rainforest Centre boardwalk has just opened for the day. The air is fresh with morning dew and the scent of ancient Bolwarra blends with the primeval smells of this pristine rainforest. Above the forest floor on the elevated boardwalk we sense the intricate web of life that surrounds us and makes the subtropical coastal rainforest at Sea Acres unique. It’s hard to believe we are only 4 km from the bustle of the Port Macquarie town centre. Sea Acres is operated by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and includes the popular Rainforest Café, run by French chef Jean Louis and wife Cherie. There is a gift and souvenir shop and the Centre is open from 9 am to 4.30 pm each day. Take advantage of the guided rainforest tours included in the entry fee or explore at your own pace. To enter the rainforest is to step into another world. It’s cool, the light is dim and the vegetation lusciously green. Catbirds calling, giant strangler figs, lace fungi, and freshly fallen fruits from animals feeding high in the canopy - the rainforest rewards the senses. About two thirds of the way around the boardwalk, glimpses of the ocean through the forest remind us we are close to the sea – Miners Beach is just 200 metres away. Sea Acres Rainforest Centre Pacific Drive, Port Macquarie Phone 6582 3355 Email seaacres@environment.nsw.gov.au

8 www.monthlyimag.com.au

A dynamic and forward-thinking organisation, WIRES has established a network of thousands of volunteer rescuers, carers and veterinarians who rescue and rehabilitate sick, injured or orphaned native animals, then release them into their natural habitat. If you find an injured native animal: • Gently cover the animal with a towel in an escape proof box • Place the box ina warm, quiet, dark room and do not distrurb • Call WIRES immediately on (02) 8977 3333 • Do not attempt to feed, handle or display the animal. Stress associated with human contact can result in death. Other ways to help • Lock your cats and dogs in at night and secure a noisy bell to your cat and dogs collar

• Plant native trees to provide food and shelter • Don’t feed native animals – let nature feed itself • Always put your rubbish in a bin to prevent animals becoming entangled in refuse If you hit an animal with your car, please stop to see if it needs help. If the animal is dead, check the pouch for surviving young that WIRES might be able to help. Remove body from the road. WIRES needs to raise thousands of dollars each year to continue its vital work in protecting Australia’s wildlife. WIRES receives minimal government and welcomes support from individuals, community groups and businesses. Please contact WIRES on 02 8977 3392 or visit www.wires.org.au to find out how you can help, through a tax deductible donation, a legacy or become a WIRES Wildlife Warrior. There are also many opportunities for volunteers to get involved with the vital work of the charity.

The Mid North Coast journey Port Stephens and the Great Lakes are a wonderland for all things marine and the perfect destinations for boating, fishing or a relaxing houseboat holiday. Port Stephens and the lakes network around Forster are home to some of the best seafood you could imagine – fresh oysters, luscious crab and mouth watering fish. And there is no better accompaniment than one of the increasing number of local quality boutique wines and beers. This coastline is also famous for being the ideal place to witness the annual whale migration. There are many excellent vantage points all along the coast between Port Stephens and Coffs Harbour. And if you want to get even closer to nature you can cruise with the dolphins all year round. For natural beauty of a different kind you may prefer to explore the ancient forests in the Taree hinterland or the majesty of the Comboyne Plateau rising high above the Manning and Hastings valleys. From here you can head to Port Macquarie, which offers a mix of cosmopolitan buzz and a laid back seaside feel. Where else could you take a stroll along coastal rainforests right on a beach but at Sea Acres in Port Macquarie?

Another branch off the highway further north brings you to the historic Trial Bay Gaol at South West Rocks and the amazing Smoky Cape Lighthouse. Or turn west into the hinterland between Kempsey and the Nambucca Valley into the classic country of Slim Dusty’s homelands. Make sure you stop for a refreshing ale at the Pub With No Beer or explore the delightful heritage village of Bowraville. Then there is Bellingen, nestled at the base of the Dorrigo Plateau and famous for its friendly and creative community. Further up the scenic Bellinger Valley dramatic escarpments with areas of lush rainforest and dramatic waterfalls create the landscape for the World Heritage listed Dorrigo National Park. All of this clings to the cliffs which are the backdrop overlooking the magnificent Coffs Coast. At its heart is Coffs Harbour, an icon of Australian holidays not just for the Big Banana, but the diversity of beaches, trails, and fascinating villages, which make up this northern tip of the Mid North Coast.

of the rest points on the escarpment of the Waterfall Way between Armidale and the Coffs Coast. You can also fly and drive your way around the Mid North Coast. It can now easily be discovered by flying into any one of three major airports in the region with services to Melbourne and Brisbane as well as Sydney. Plan your trip around Newcastle Airport near Port Stephens, Port Macquarie in the centre of the Mid North Coast or Coffs Harbour Airport in the north. The choice is yours.

Covering: Tea Gardens - Hawks Nest - Seal Rocks Port Stephens was first noted by Europeans in May 1770 when Captain James Cook referred to Port Stephens in his log as "an opening forming a bay".

He went on to describe; "Wind southerly in the day and in the night westerly, a gentle breeze and clear weather. At 4pm past at a distance of one mile a low rocky point which I named Point Stephens... on the north side of this point is an inlet which I called Port Stephens that appears from the masthead to be sheltered from all winds". The twin towns of Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest lie at the mouth of the Myall River and reflect the areas relaxed lifestyle with a sense of peace and tranquility. The towns and surrounds offer a special mix of accommodation and activities.

Seal Rocks, 40 minutes’ drive south of Forster, is the ideal destination if you like bushwalking, surfing or scuba diving. Wauchope Covering: Wauchope: Comboyne - Ellenborough Falls The first European in the Wauchope area was Surveyor John Oxley who named Mount Seaview and the Hastings River (after Lord Warren Hasting, Governor of India) as he passed through the area in 1818. By 1820 cedar was being cut in the district and in 1821 Governor Lachlan Macquarie established Port Macquarie as a penal colony. By 1826 there were numerous experiments with sugar cane along the banks of the Hastings River. In 1828 a number of land grants were made along the Hastings River. In 1836 the village of Wauchope came into existence. Captain Robert Andrew Wauch (he had dropped ‘ope’ from the end of his name as a result of a family dispute) paid a deposit on 760

acres on King Creek. The property was named “Wauchope” and it was from this the town would eventually grow. Today Wauchope is a beautiful town endowed with a traditional timber-milling heritage. Wonderful places of historic importance are located throughout the town and in the surrounding areas a must see destination for all.

At 1584 metres above sea level, nearby Round Mountain is the highest point on the New England Tablelands. The variety of eucalypts and wildflowers attracts an abundance of birds, including rose robins, flycatchers and pardalotes. Grey kangaroos and swamp wallabies are often seen feeding on the heathland plants and mosses around the Barokee Rest Area in the late afternoon. Bushwalkers will enjoy exploring the park’s walking tracks. There are four to choose from: Cathedral Rock Track (5.8km circuit/2.5hrs), Woolpacks Rocks (7.4km return/3hrs), Warrigal Track (1km circuit/30mins) and the more serious Barokee – Native Dog Creek (10.4km one way). Secluded camping is available amid tall banksias and eucalypts at Barokee Camping Area while Native Dog Creek Camping Area is a more spacious site, ideal for caravans and trailers. No bookings are required, but overnight camping fees apply.
