Garlic has flowers? Sounds funny, but it’s true that garlic sprouts a flower. It’s quite attractive when in bulb but comes into its own when it will eventually blossom, opening up to reveal a beautiful mauve, pink flower. These flowers start to appear when the garlic is approaching maturation and it’s a signal that the garlic is about ready to harvest. Different varieties of garlic will produce different styles of flowers. Some will look curly while others will be straight and harder. Unfortunately, they are not so friendly to your garlic in the ground. Most growers agree that the flower will take energy away from expanding the bulb, so the bulb may suffer in size or even have a hollow centre when harvested. So, cut the flowers off as soon as they appear and pop them into a vase with water. Don’t worry, they have a very mild garlic fragrance! And they last for a long time! Specialty Beers on Tap The Morpeth Brewery & Beer Co. microbrewery is located at the Commercial Hotel Morpeth: 127 Swan Street Morpeth. At Morpeth Brewery & Beer Co we are passionate about brewing according to artisan principles, and aspire to produce all natural beers from the finest quality ingredients free of additives or preservatives and without resorting to filtration, added flocculants or forced-carbonation. This is pure beer, naturally carbonated in the keg - a beer that we believe is more flavoursome, wholesome, intricate and appealing than mainstream beer. It is Beer As It Should Be! Our three permanent beers on tap are the Close Call Pale Ale, Mullet Run Maple Porter and Big Hitter Special Bitter. All have been named with reference to Morpeth’s rich history. Additional beers on tap are seasonal or themed so there is always something new to try. Come into the hotel to see the microbrewery onsite; join in the free tastings and information sessions with the brewer held every Saturday from 12pm – 1pm; and sample some lovely bistro fare that has been matched with the beers on tap. Refreshing ideas for Christmas Christmas – a time for family, friends, good food and even better wine. What a terrific opportunity to enjoy an Australian Champagne or fresh Semillon; in fact the world’s best Semillon in 2011 was from the Hunter Valley. For a warm Australian Christmas here are some Christmas wine ideas… Sangria is a Spanish favourite and very refreshing. Ideal wines as a base are sparkling Shiraz or Sangiovese. Add lemonade and lots of orange and apple. Frizzante - a sparkling Semillon served with lemon is really refreshing and low in alcohol. When it comes to food nothing can beat matching a Pinot Grigio paired with a Waldorf salad, or grilled prawns with a light salad drizzled with a good caramelised balsamic vinegar. Still on food, lightly baste your BBQ fish with lemon myrtle infused olive oil as this will give you a light lemon tang and help stop the fish drying out. For the perfect finish to a special meal try a chilled liqueur Muscat with Christmas pudding. It will ensure a pleasant Christmas day afternoon with a little nap to end the day. Wherever you are, remember wine is for sharing, enjoying and complementing great food - not for excess. (Also worth remembering - your News Year’s resolution made under the influence is non-binding!)

December: The month of survival If you are looking for the Perfect Christmas Living Gift you can’t go past red poinsettias. They celebrate Christmas in the office, or at home, like no other plant. Keep your lawn longer. It will protect the roots of the grass, especially in the summer heat. Water plants deeply in the early morning preferably, before the day starts to warm up or early in the evening. Daily watering is needed if the weather is hot & dry for all your veggies & annuals, as well as any new plants or plants in pots. We recommend you add a wetting agent such as Wettasoil to both your garden & lawn to make the most of any water they receive.

The Australian Museum of Clothing and Textiles is presenting “TEXTILE WORKS” an exhibition of Textile based HSC Major Projects. We have invited the local secondary schools and colleges to nominate their students who have submitted a major project from the subject areas of Textiles and Design, Design Technology and Art for our inaugural and hopefully yearly exhibition Textile Works. The Australian Museum of Clothing and Textiles felt that our local students should be given an opportunity to have their wonderful pieces of work put on display in a local setting, giving parents, family, and friends and local schools and students studying textiles the opportunity to view a great range of textile based designs locally. The exhibition will open mid- December and run until early March. The Australian Museum of Clothing and Textiles is located in John Street, East Maitland. Open Thursday and Saturday 10am -3pm and Friday 10am – 2pm. Contact Lynette McDowell on 4930 9051. For group bookings: Stephanie Rogers on 0403 652 550. Newcastle Beach

Newcastle Newcastle is a vibrant cosmopolitan city which has everything from world-class surfing beaches, to the emerging food scene, Newcastle has it all. Explore and uncover the flavour and allure of the city’s streetscapes and waterfronts – each with its own feel and character. Five of the city’s pristine beaches are on the eastern side of the promontory. These include; Nobby’s Beach, Newcastle Beach, Bar Beach, Dixon Park Beach and Merewether Beach where there are swimming clubs, kite surfing, rock pools and baths, watching

www.hunterimag.com.au hang-gliders and surfing lessons. The Café culture is emerging with the most popular food areas in Darby Street in Cooks Hill; The Harbour waterfronts including Honeysuckle, Beaumont Street in Hamilton and The Junction. Newcastle is a city that embraces and nurtures creativity, and holds local arts practitioners in high esteem. Newcastle is host to a colourful and expansive array of art galleries, including the Newcastle Region Art Gallery, one of Australia’s leading

regional galleries. Much creative talent has originated in the city including the world-renowned band, Silverchair. Newcastle is all about the experience of different cultures and magnificent scenery. It is a place of attraction that can be enjoyed by everyone. Newcastle Beaches Newcastle is well-known for its stunning coastline and it is one of the few cities in the world that can say it has eight beaches within five minutes of its city centre. Nobbys, Newcastle, Bar, Dixon Park and Merewether Beach, just to name a few, are attractive must-see locations for any visitor to the city. June 2007 storms thrust Nobbys Beach into the International spotlight after the grounding of the massive Pasha Bulker cargo ship on its shores. A monument to the event stands at Nobbys Beach and is a stop off point for visitors and locals alike. Nearby is the Harbour break-wall and Nobby’s Lighthouse, perfect for that afternoon stroll and the ideal vantage point to watch 300m cargo ships come into port. Newcastle Beach is known for being one of the best surf locations in Australia along with Merewether

Beach, home to the annual International Surfest competition. Adjacent are the Merewether Baths, the largest ocean bath complex in the Southern Hemisphere – there is nothing else like this facility in Australia. The bath is a favourite for locals of a warm summer’s day and ideal for lap swimmers all year round. One of the city’s most outstanding historic landmarks is the Newcastle Ocean Baths. With its art deco architecture and picturesque views of the ocean, the bath has long been an icon of the Newcastle coastline. Adjacent to the ocean bath is Newcastle Canoe Pool, which once featured a map of the world with small islands representing the continents. The shallow canoe pool is the perfect place for young children to swim in safety away from waves and surfers.

A visit to Newcastle is not complete without a day on the beach. So grab a parcel of fish and chips and join the locals on the sand. Don’t forget to watch out for dolphins, a common sight off Newcastle’s beaches. To keep up with the weather, tides and surf check out @NDays on Twitter!

Art in the Park Daylight Saving Written by Nick Enright following the successful Venetian Twins, this award winning Australian comedy was published in 1990 after its first staging in 1989 by the Ensemble Theatre, Sydney. The play is set in a house overlooking Pittwater, north of Sydney, over two weekends in March. The second weekend the clocks are set back one hour as daylight saving ends. Flick is a successful restaurateur trying to cope with a 'gay chef' crisis. Her husband Tom will be absent on their wedding anniversary managing a young neurotic tennis pro, Jason. Jason is having trouble with his psychic. Josh, an ex-boyfriend of Flick's, is in town and gets an invitation to dinner. A stressed neighbour, Stephanie, keeps dropping in. Bunty, Flick’s nosy mother, is being difficult to get out of the house. These are the tasty ingredients to the play that won the Gold Awgie as well as Best Stage Play at the 1990 Awgie Awards. After a 20 year gap, Newcastle Theatre Company is revisiting this wonderful comedy. Noel Grivas, who played Josh in the 1992 production, is directing after honing his skills by staging Ray Lawler’s ‘Doll Trilogy’ at Maitland Repertory Theatre over the last three years. NTC’s production of Daylight Saving by Nick Enright opens on Saturday 19 January 2013 and plays Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights until 2 February 2013. There are matinees on Sunday 20 and Saturday 26 January.

An Interview with Prof. McMillen Vice Chancellor of Newcastle University 1. What motivates and inspires you? Working in an environment focussed on supporting people from all backgrounds to achieve their potential through education is a daily motivation and seeing the pride on the faces of graduates and families on Graduation Day is an inspiration. Discussing research with staff who are world leaders in their field is always a privilege –seeing their tireless commitment to improve the world in which we live is inspiring. 2. What do you do to relax? Walking around Newcastle - along the harbour, out to the Breakwall or along to Merewether Surf Club on a Sunday for a (very) late breakfast with my husband. A quiet double shot cappuccino at 23 Hundred on Scott St with the Herald in the early morning – and you can’t beat a book and 20 minutes of really bad TV at the end of a long day. 3. What's next on the horizon for you? The next year at the University will be one where build on our great performance and work to strengthen our global reputation. We will engage with the world’s best in education and research and attract bright and talented minds to Newcastle and our regions- to talk, work, study, create and engage with our University and our communities. 4. What does it mean to you to be a Novocastrian? I was born in the great harbour city of Belfast and grew up in a ‘steel town’ in Northern England – and feel absolutely at home in Newcastle. I have found Novocastrians to be welcoming, grounded - and smart. As a ‘rookie Novocastrian’ I am proud to be in a city which is resilient, creative and has a strong sense of social justice. 5. What do you love most about Newcastle? Working in one of the most interesting universities in the country alongside staff who are passionate about what they do and with bright students who challenge and inspire. And at the end of a long week - sitting on the veranda, looking out across the harbour lights and watching the tugs work alongside the magnificent coal ships would have be one of the best views on the planet.

Kurri Kurri Mural - 'Bullocky'

Cessnock & Kurri Kurri Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast. Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland. During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the

last twenty years. Consequently many areas have undergone a change in character, with rural residential housing development and weekend retreats becoming popular. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convictbuilt Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures.

Whimsical new exhibition at Cessnock Regional Art Gallery HOME brings together four female artists, winners of the 2011 Sculpture in the Vineyards CRAG Award. The exhibition explores the idea of home: is it safe? Is it warm and comforting? But the more you explore this exhibition, the more you realise that nothing is ever as it seems. The JaM collective combines a soundscape with an eerily swaying, suspended room, asking visitors to question the very fabric of places which were once that of solace.

What to see and do in Kurri Kurri

Dr Melissa Laird creates shrines of eerily assembled mementos, pieced together from found objects to create a Grandma’s cabinet of hoarded trinkets. Specimen-like organs by Tammie Castles capture memories of Cessnock’s coal mining past, questioning what happens when a community loses the industry that created it. Home opens 24th November, and runs until 21st December at Cessnock Regional Art Gallery, 16 Vincent St Cessnock 02 4991 6619 e: info@crag.net.au www.crag.net.au

www.monthlyimag.com.au

Maitland Regional Art Gallery (MRAG) along with Maitland City Council is showcasing some of Australia’s most successful visual artists. Inspiring artists: recipients of the Pat Corrigan Artists’ Grant is an exhibition which looks at the long term positive and in some cases dramatic effects on artists who early in their careers were the recipients of small grants. For fifteen years more than one thousand artists were awarded with a Pat Corrigan Artists’ Grant. The grant scheme, managed and promoted by NAVA (the National Association for the Visual Arts), assisted artists in the early stages of their artistic careers, subsidising the costs of public presentation of their visual arts, crafts and design work. Many of the grant recipients have gone on to achieve national and international success as artists. This exhibition is a small selection of Pat Corrigan Artists’ Grant recipients. Pat Corrigan is still a patron of NAVA and also one of two MRAG Patrons. Awards such as this, although not huge in monetary value, provide needed encouragement and boost an emerging artists confidence, provides validation and inspiration to continue in a profession which provides rewards in unique and unusual ways. Morpeth

www.hunterimag.com.au

Morpeth is an area of outstanding natural beauty and offers a great experience for everyone who enjoys the pleasure of a walk in a country village with the opportunity of shopping and dining in unique style. It's a little place not far from Maitland, with a history to make us all proud. Morpeth was once upon a time a busy river port and frontier town established during the late 1820's. The Heritage buildings and Bond Stores stand in testament indeed, Morpeth was the largest inland seaport of the new Australian colony and commercial icons Brambles, Simsmetal, Arnotts and Soul's Pharmacy were born in this magnificent place. Set along the banks of the Hunter River, the drive to Morpeth is an added attraction. The green fields stretch for miles and the weeping willows sway in the breeze. It is very hard to find a

place to match our beautiful Morpeth. As you stroll through the cobblestoned village you will notice that Morpeth has everything from art galleries to specialty shops to a Trading Post and even a Bazaar. Local artisans and craftspeople have their wares for sale throughout the town. You will have the opportunity to taste locally made fudge and sip ginger beer. Fine fashion, teddy bears, art and craft, tempting treats to take home, beautiful jewellery, home furnishings and objects of interest, we promise that you will find them in Morpeth. A range of restaurants and cafes offer al fresco dining, river views, heritage surroundings and a cosmopolitan standard of menu. Grab a bottle of the finest wine available for tasting from the local wine cellar then select your café, even the most finicky of foodies will find something to their liking.

The Allyn & Paterson River Valley Tocal - Paterson - Vacy - East Gresford - Gresford There is a lot on offer for visitors to the Allyn & Paterson River Valley, just two and a half hours’ drive from Sydney, an hour from Newcastle and where Dr Henry Lindeman planted his first grape vines in 1843. Here you will discover the geographically blessed towns of Paterson, Vacy, Gresford and East Gresford, ringed by the ancient Moonabung Ranges and criss-crossed by the pristine waters of the two rivers that flow from the Barrington Tops. First stop could be historic Tocal Homestead for tales of the olden days of bushrangers, graziers, and other characters who inhabited one of the greatest Australian cattle and horse studs of its time. Have a look at the rare architect-designed barn built around 1867, and the gracious Colonial Georgian country house. Tocal Homestead is a very popular venue for

weddings and milestone celebrations. Paterson has inspired many artists to pick up a brush to try to capture this picturesque Australian country town on canvas. Take the time to look at the many fine old homes, grand commercial buildings, museums, art gallery, pubs, cafes, parks and shops that contribute to Paterson’s unique style. 9km north of Paterson is Vacy, with rugged Mt George to the west. It is well worth a visit to the café, hotel, arts & crafts shop and general store for a taste of country hospitality, great food and quirky crafts. Travel over the Vacy bridge, circa 1898, to Bunna Bunoo olive grove and gift shop. You can see the roof tops of the cabins and lodges such as Banjos Bushland Retreat and Cabins in the Clouds on Mt George, perfect destinations for weekend getaways or a longer stay.

The small towns of Gresford and East Gresford are the gateway to Lostock Dam, Mt Allyn and the Chichester State Forest to the north. Take the Allyn River Road drive past homesteads set among rolling green hills and granite outcrops. Visit Clevedon craft shop, Natural Furniture Works, the Beatty Hotel and Camyr Allyn winery. History lovers will enjoy a drive to St Anne’s Anglican Church and suspension bridge, and St Mary’s on Allyn at Allynbrook.
