Garlic has flowers? Sounds funny, but it’s true that garlic sprouts a flower. It’s quite attractive when in bulb but comes into its own when it will eventually blossom, opening up to reveal a beautiful mauve, pink flower. These flowers start to appear when the garlic is approaching maturation and it’s a signal that the garlic is about ready to harvest. Different varieties of garlic will produce different styles of flowers. Some will look curly while others will be straight and harder. Unfortunately, they are not so friendly to your garlic in the ground. Most growers agree that the flower will take energy away from expanding the bulb, so the bulb may suffer in size or even have a hollow centre when harvested. So, cut the flowers off as soon as they appear and pop them into a vase with water. Don’t worry, they have a very mild garlic fragrance! And they last for a long time! Refreshing ideas for Christmas Christmas – a time for family, friends, good food and even better wine. What a terrific opportunity to enjoy an Australian Champagne or fresh Semillon; in fact the world’s best Semillon in 2011 was from the Hunter Valley. For a warm Australian Christmas here are some Christmas wine ideas… Sangria is a Spanish favourite and very refreshing. Ideal wines as a base are sparkling Shiraz or Sangiovese. Add lemonade and lots of orange and apple. Frizzante - a sparkling Semillon served with lemon is really refreshing and low in alcohol. When it comes to food nothing can beat matching a Pinot Grigio paired with a Waldorf salad, or grilled prawns with a light salad drizzled with a good caramelised balsamic vinegar. Still on food, lightly baste your BBQ fish with lemon myrtle infused olive oil as this will give you a light lemon tang and help stop the fish drying out. For the perfect finish to a special meal try a chilled liqueur Muscat with Christmas pudding. It will ensure a pleasant Christmas day afternoon with a little nap to end the day. The Australian Museum of Clothing and Textiles is presenting “TEXTILE WORKS” an exhibition of Textile based HSC Major Projects. We have invited the local secondary schools and colleges to nominate their students who have submitted a major project from the subject areas of Textiles and Design, Design Technology and Art for our inaugural and hopefully yearly exhibition Textile Works. The Australian Museum of Clothing and Textiles felt that our local students should be given an opportunity to have their wonderful pieces of work put on display in a local setting, giving parents, family, and friends and local schools and students studying textiles the opportunity to view a great range of textile based designs locally. Art in the Park Daylight Saving Written by Nick Enright following the successful Venetian Twins, this award winning Australian comedy was published in 1990 after its first staging in 1989 by the Ensemble Theatre, Sydney. The play is set in a house overlooking Pittwater, north of Sydney, over two weekends in March. The second weekend the clocks are set back one hour as daylight saving ends. Flick is a successful restaurateur trying to cope with a 'gay chef' crisis. Her husband Tom will be absent on their wedding anniversary managing a young neurotic tennis pro, Jason. Jason is having trouble with his psychic. Josh, an ex-boyfriend of Flick's, is in town and gets an invitation to dinner. A stressed neighbour, Stephanie, keeps dropping in. Bunty, Flick’s nosy mother, is being difficult to get out of the house. These are the tasty ingredients to the play that won the Gold Awgie as well as Best Stage Play at the 1990 Awgie Awards. After a 20 year gap, Newcastle Theatre Company is revisiting this wonderful comedy. Noel Grivas, who played Josh in the 1992 production, is directing after honing his skills by staging Ray Lawler’s ‘Doll Trilogy’ at Maitland Repertory Theatre over the last three years. NTC’s production of Daylight Saving by Nick Enright opens on Saturday 19 January 2013 and plays Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights until 2 February 2013. There are matinees on Sunday 20 and Saturday 26 January.

An Interview with Prof. McMillen Vice Chancellor of Newcastle University 1. What motivates and inspires you? Working in an environment focussed on supporting people from all backgrounds to achieve their potential through education is a daily motivation and seeing the pride on the faces of graduates and families on Graduation Day is an inspiration. Discussing research with staff who are world leaders in their field is always a privilege –seeing their tireless commitment to improve the world in which we live is inspiring. 2. What do you do to relax? Walking around Newcastle - along the harbour, out to the Breakwall or along to Merewether Surf Club on a Sunday for a (very) late breakfast with my husband. A quiet double shot cappuccino at 23 Hundred on Scott St with the Herald in the early morning – and you can’t beat a book and 20 minutes of really bad TV at the end of a long day. 3. What's next on the horizon for you? The next year at the University will be one where build on our great performance and work to strengthen our global reputation. We will engage with the world’s best in education and research and attract bright and talented minds to Newcastle and our regions- to talk, work, study, create and engage with our University and our communities. 4. What does it mean to you to be a Novocastrian? I was born in the great harbour city of Belfast and grew up in a ‘steel town’ in Northern England – and feel absolutely at home in Newcastle. I have found Novocastrians to be welcoming, grounded - and smart. As a ‘rookie Novocastrian’ I am proud to be in a city which is resilient, creative and has a strong sense of social justice. 5. What do you love most about Newcastle? Working in one of the most interesting universities in the country alongside staff who are passionate about what they do and with bright students who challenge and inspire. And at the end of a long week - sitting on the veranda, looking out across the harbour lights and watching the tugs work alongside the magnificent coal ships would have be one of the best views on the planet.

Over 250,000 lights have been added to this year’s Christmas Lights Spectacular at Hunter Valley Gardens ensuring that the event, with over 1.25 million lights in total, will be the best yet! The Gardens will be filled with vibrant colour, incredible light and sound displays every night from Friday 9th November, 2012 until Saturday 26th January, 2013 (excluding Christmas Day and night). Special Olympics National Junior Games From 6th - 10th December 250 athletes between the age of 8 - 15 years will come to Athletes Olympic Village situated at Newcastle University to compete in the 3rd Junior National Junior Games. competing in Swimming, Cricket, Basketball, Tennis and Soccer with Skills programs in Gymnastics and T-Ball. This is part of the Special Olympics Movement, an organisation that provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with an intellectual disability. The Junior National Games are held every four years and are specifically designed to provide an opportunity for athletes under 16 to experience quality competition and for the majority of these children it is the first chance they have to leave home on their own and compete at a National Level. The Opening Ceremony of the Games will be held at the Newcastle Basketball Stadium on the 7th December and will showcase the athletes, local dance and performance groups, the Police Law Enforcement Torch Run and country music talent Amber Lawrence. This year’s theme will be “A Christmas Carol” and artists include Taga Paa, well known for his performance on The Voice, and some great local talent, Matt Purcell and Kirsty Larkin together with the Jitterbugs children’s entertainment. Kurri Kurri Mural - 'Bullocky'
Cessnock & Kurri Kurri Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast. Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland. During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the
last twenty years. Consequently many areas have undergone a change in character, with rural residential housing development and weekend retreats becoming popular. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convictbuilt Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures.

Whimsical new exhibition at Cessnock Regional Art Gallery HOME brings together four female artists, winners of the 2011 Sculpture in the Vineyards CRAG Award. The exhibition explores the idea of home: is it safe? Is it warm and comforting? But the more you explore this exhibition, the more you realise that nothing is ever as it seems. The JaM collective combines a soundscape with an eerily swaying, suspended room, asking visitors to question the very fabric of places which were once that of solace.

Maitland Regional Art Gallery (MRAG) along with Maitland City Council is showcasing some of Australia’s most successful visual artists. Inspiring artists: recipients of the Pat Corrigan Artists’ Grant is an exhibition which looks at the long term positive and in some cases dramatic effects on artists who early in their careers were the recipients of small grants. For fifteen years more than one thousand artists were awarded with a Pat Corrigan Artists’ Grant. The grant scheme, managed and promoted by NAVA (the National Association for the Visual Arts), assisted artists in the early stages of their artistic careers, subsidising the costs of public presentation of their visual arts, crafts and design work. Many of the grant recipients have gone on to achieve national and international success as artists. This exhibition is a small selection of Pat Corrigan Artists’ Grant recipients. Pat Corrigan is still a patron of NAVA and also one of two MRAG Patrons. Awards such as this, although not huge in monetary value, provide needed encouragement and boost an emerging artists confidence, provides validation and inspiration to continue in a profession which provides rewards in unique and unusual ways. Many of the artists went on to develop substantial artistic and creative careers contributing to the long term cultural Australian landscape. The artists represented in the exhibition include Lionel Bawden, Nike Savvas, Patricia Piccinini, and includes local artists Brett Alexander Braddon Snape, Michelle Brodie and Nell who recently reatured in a solo show at MRAG. The exhibition runs from 9 November 2013 – 17 February 2013 with the opening celebration 17 November - everyone is welcome and entry is free.

The Allyn & Paterson River Valley Tocal - Paterson - Vacy - East Gresford - Gresford There is a lot on offer for visitors to the Allyn & Paterson River Valley, just two and a half hours’ drive from Sydney, an hour from Newcastle and where Dr Henry Lindeman planted his first grape vines in 1843. Here you will discover the geographically blessed towns of Paterson, Vacy, Gresford and East Gresford, ringed by the ancient Moonabung Ranges and criss-crossed by the pristine waters of the two rivers that flow from the Barrington Tops. First stop could be historic Tocal Homestead for tales of the olden days of bushrangers, graziers, and other characters who inhabited one of the greatest Australian cattle and horse studs of its time. Have a look at the rare architect-designed barn built around 1867, and the gracious Colonial Georgian country house. Tocal Homestead is a very popular venue for
weddings and milestone celebrations. Paterson has inspired many artists to pick up a brush to try to capture this picturesque Australian country town on canvas. Take the time to look at the many fine old homes, grand commercial buildings, museums, art gallery, pubs, cafes, parks and shops that contribute to Paterson’s unique style. 9km north of Paterson is Vacy, with rugged Mt George to the west. Christmas Bells + Summer Shineshine at Scone Homegrown + Handmade Market Why not do all your Christmas Celebration Shopping this year at the popular Scone Homegrown + Handmade Market and support local producers and suppliers with your purchases. The Christmas / Summer market will be held on Saturday 15 December at Kerv Café with extended market trading hours by request from 8am to 2pm. There are a range of new initiatives for stallholders and market goers alike. They include a Handmade Creations Fashion Parade where stallholders will showcase their Summer fashions, jewellery, hats and hair accessories. A variety of new stallholders will showcase their wares at the Spring Market and market visitors will discover more local produce and food as well as locally made and handcrafted gifts, clothing and accessories not only for the girls but for the boys as well. The James Estate Ridge Walk The track to James Estate starts along the great Bylong Valley Way 15 mins from Denman. The Ridge Walk showcases the natural beauty of our region with commanding views in all directions, overlooking James Estate winery, the Goulburn River Valley and our highest peak
Mount Dangar. The full trail is a signed four km (return trip) Grade 3 walk. To fully appreciate the experience it is best to allow 1.5 hours for the walk from the James Estate Cellar Door. For the less energetic there is a shorter walk available that still affords spectacular views across the valley.
