Mandalong Gallery is owned and operated by David and Sheila Kearns, and specialises exclusively in Australian Indigenous art. They have been involved in Australian made Aboriginal Art for 19 years and have personal contact with many of their Aboriginal artists. After many years of dealing in Aboriginal Art, Mandalong Gallery moved to a larger property out at andalong. It was here that the current gallery was built. and. It was officially opened in 2000 by John Kilpatrick Lord Mayor of Lake Macquarie. A smoking ceremony, Aboriginal dancing, and Didgeridoo playing completed the official opening. They have travelled extensively in their search of both established and emerging artists. Mandalong Gallery endeavours to purchase directly from the artist whenever possible. All paintings come with a Certificate of Authenticity. If you are looking for a particular artist or style of work not currently featured on the website, please contact Sheila or David and they will email any images and details they have available from their extensive range of works in stock. When Sheila and David are away you will find Patricia and Marjorie in attendance, and willing to help you find that perfect piece. www.mandalonggallery.com.au

Gosford City Farmers Market

Every Sunday from May 3rd Gosford City Farmers Market will commence operations at Gosford Racecourse/ The Entertainment Grounds between 8am and 1pm. Gosford City Farmers Market, like the other flagship farmers' markets operated by NSW Farmers Markets Pty Ltd, will be a haven for fresh produce direct from the farmer or producer with a wide range of fresh vegetables, fruits, primary produce including gourmet jams and preserves, olive oil products, pestos, macadamia nuts and fresh home made products. The market will include other food related items from high quality "foodto-eat" vendors. Flowers, plants and trees will also be available for sale. Additionally the market will also feature handmade quality products from artists and designers. Avenues of marquees brimming with vibrant vegetables, fruit, melt in your mouth products such as Goat and Sheep Cheeses, Lebanese humus, fresh baked breads, patisserie, farm gate meats and other gourmet delights - now add the all important creative souls who bring this to you every week - the Farmers and Artisans who attend Rain, Hail and Shine to serve their customers. The Farmers and Artisans offer up their knowledge, enthusiasm and products from the fruits of a lot of hard work. We believe this exemplifies the country passion of local food, a commitment to farming and the environment to deliver the freshest product direct from the farm gate to you that just cannot be replicated at a supermarket. The only privately owned bakery in a gaol Blackbird Artisan Bakery is a tiny rustic business teaching old world cooking skills to new ageapprentices. We make long cold ferment sour dough, totally handmade. Our bread is low GI, low fat and simply delicious. We work in conjunction with Flinders Ranges Premium Grain – a tiny collective of 5 farms, 4 families in the lowest rainfall, most marginal wheat belt in Australia. Flinders Ranges Farmers produce a beautiful hard wheat which is well suited to artisan bread making. We deal directly with the farm and see first-hand the economic dynamics of this relationship. Our staff have enjoyed professional development visits to the farms during harvest so they understand the journey that our grain makes from the paddock to the plate; from the grain to the flour to our daily bread. This unique partnership gives us total traceability, accountability and reliability. We are justifiably proud of the opportunity to work directly with the grower and to directly benefit their bottom line. To complement our Australian partnership we use a French Rye Flour which produces fantastic rye breads. Everything we do is handmade, high quality and designed to make your belly smile! Kurri Kurri & Cessnock to Wollombi

A rich wine growing area During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convict-built Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures. 24

Kurri Kurri is famous for its Murals, they are a wonderful expression of our history and region, and tours are available all year round, we have many coach groups coming into town to view these amazing outdoor artworks and are proud to be the biggest Mural town in Australia. There are now over 50 murals, making Kurri Kurri the largest mural town in Australia. New murals are currently underway. Don't forget to look for the kookaburra in every mural, some are quite difficult to find. To book a tour, enquire about projects contact the Kurri Kurri VIC 4936 1909.

Historic Wollombi The Wollombi Valley is nestled between the Watagan Forests and Yengo National Park, just an hour and a half from Sydney at the gateway to the Hunter Valley. Wollombi has a rich aboriginal and colonial history, including the convict-built Great North

Until July 12 In 1916, a young man born and raised in the Maitland area fought his way to the very pinnacle of Australian professional boxing, earning himself a swag of wealth from nothing, and the honor of both the Middleweight and Heavyweight Champion titles of Australia. Though a number of the opponents Les Darcy defeated in the ring were themselves world champions, war time turbulence and Darcy’s early death in 1917 saw the coveted title of World Champion elude this great athlete. The high regard with which the people of Australia held Darcy’s achievements were never more apparent than when his coffin made it’s way to East Maitland Cemetery and hundreds of thousands of people came onto the streets to pay their respects - a legend was born. The various items of Darcy memorabilia currently held in the permanent Maitland Regional Art Gallery collection are the result of the collecting acuity of Cultural Director, Joe Eisenberg. Eisenberg identified a lack of representation of this sporting great in the town’s public collections and sought to acquire items that would address this need. It is with great joy that we are able to present a selection of those items in this exhibition for old and new audiences alike - behold, ‘The Maitland Wonder.’

Until the 1980s, Morpeth was a rundown village in fear of demolition. Then it was slowly rejuvenated as a destination and what was left of its charming buildings rescued from the bulldozer. A few local businesses joined together to establish a small jazz festival in the bicentenary year of 1988. The jazz festival soon acquired a life of its own and by 2000 had developed into a major event. World War I lasted over four years and caused the greatest loss of life in Australian history. The impact of the war in Newcastle and the Hunter is still felt today. Shadows of Sacrifice: Newcastle’s Great War 1914 – 1918 will follow general events of the war and also focus on the lives of specific Novocastrians. From 2014 to 2018, the exhibition will change every six months to reflect the changing events of one hundred years ago. From a population of less than 5 million, almost 417,000 Australians served in the war. Ten thousand Hunter and Newcastle men enlisted and at least 75 women served as nurses. Australian war dead totalled 61,520. Many of those who returned were so damaged physically and psychologically that their lives were never the same.
