NewRun, Newcastle’s running festival is on over the 3rd and 4th April, with the exciting addition of our first marathon! You might be forgiven for driving past Entice Café on Ken Tubman Drive in Maitland, we almost don’t want to tell you about it as it’s our little secret….. The café is part of the Quest Apartments building. There is no parking outside the café, so the main car park is a good idea as it is just over the road. The café itself is bright, clean and fresh and the service has always been incredibly warm and welcoming. We first started going there a year ago when our pup was just a few months old as we can sit in the covered courtyard at the front. We now have two dogs and they are always made to feel as welcome as we are. The menu is quite varied, although we confess, the burger and hot chips is a firm favourite. We are creatures of habit! Of course you don’t just have to have breakfast or lunch – with great coffee and tea available and a selection of sweet things we’ve seen many people just drop in for a natter over a slice. It’s our favourite bolt hole in Maitland. We can’t fault the friendly service, good food and central location. They’re open in the evenings too!

Sensational 'God of Carnage' at NTC The comedy of manners without the manners, ‘God of Carnage’, written by acclaimed playwright Yazmina Reza makes its Newcastle debut! March 29 to April 12 Wed, Fri, Sat 8pm, 2pm Matinees March 30 & April 5 After an altercation between two school children that leaves one needing medical attention, the parents of the two children decide to meet up and resolve the issues. After all, adults are not at all like children right? Over the course of this play, it is discovered that the parents may have more issues than simply figuring out who are the better parents. Discussions about how much time they put into their children, what lessons they teach them and arguments about who cares more, escalate. Throw in some alcohol, a bad cake and an argument about a missing hamster into the mix and we see the collapse of everyone on stage. This play was a sensation at it’s Broadway premiere In 2009, where it won best play and best director. Directed by Newcastle director John Wood, making his NTC directorial debut, and starring a stunning ensemble of Linda Read, Michael Byrne, Richard Murray and Rosemary Dartnell. For 90 minutes let ‘God of Carnage’ take you to the surreal, where we will all pretend that we don’t act like this.

Cessnock & Kurri Kurri Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast. Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland.

During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the last twenty years. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing

April Exhibitions at CRAG Join Cessnock Regional Art Gallery for Reflections on the Hunter, an exploration of the region by artists Brian Roberts and Shirley Cameron-Roberts. Brian’s luscious oils portray the big picture, with dramatic paintings of sea and land as well as a glimpse of the people and creatures that live there. Groovin: The Story of Groovin the Moo at Maitland Regional Arts Gallery until 25th May Groovin is a multi-media exhibition featuring graphics, objects, video, music, and writings from the archives of the Groovin’ the Moo music festivals. The visually and technically diverse collection of exhibits has been curated by Cattleyard Productions to allow the audience unique insights in to the artistic process that unfolds before, during and after a music festival. The Allyn & Paterson River Valley Tocal - Paterson - Vacy - East Gresford - Gresford There is a lot on offer for visitors to the Allyn & Paterson River Valley, just two and a half hours’ drive from Sydney, an hour from Newcastle and where Dr Henry Lindeman planted his first grape vines in 1843.
