Hunter Valley Gardens Christmas Lights
From the Editor
www.hunterimag.com.au
December Hello and welcome to the December issue of the Newcastle and the Hunter iMag. December is always an exciting month in the Hunter region as we prepare for the Christmas festivities. As usual there is plenty of things to see and do during the holidays so check out page 18 for details of what’s on or find out online at www.hunterimag. com.au If you are looking for the perfect gift, for something original or unique then take a look at pages 2 and 3 in this issue to find out when the markets are on in your area. There is so much variety available and most of the markets also have food stalls and live entertainment – making the trip great fun for all the family, and you never know, you might pick up a bargain to boot! For those of you who want to feel a bit more festive, there will be plenty of carol concerts taking place across the region throughout the month, including the Carols by Candlelight in Swansea on the 21st. See page 13 for more details. Remember that if you are intending dining out during the holiday season, book early as restaurants, pubs and clubs fill up pretty quickly. Do you want to savour the delights
Contents and experience the legendary hospitality of continental Europe? Then try dinner at Emma’s Cottage with dessert at Sabor in the Hunter on Wilderness Road in the heart of the Hunter Valley. A delightful location with both restaurants offering exquisite menus and the friendliest welcome! See page 22 for contact information. Of course to truly experience the Christmas spirit, why not take your family along to one of the many Christmas services on at your local church? Candlelight, carols and the story of the Nativity told by children and adults in your local community are a great way to celebrate with your family. Our local church here at Hunter iMag is the beautiful St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church in Raymond Terrace – to find out what’s on there over the Christmastime, see page 27. Whatever you do, stay safe, don’t drink and drive and have a very Merry Christmas!

The café is comfortable and everyone is greeted with a bright and cheery welcome by Warren, Barbara and their staff. It is a firm favourite for locals who like a good hearty brekky to start the day off right and weekend brunches are always popular. It’s a well-loved meeting place for cycling groups, car and bike enthusiasts. To the right as you walk in is the “Wall of Fame” – literally hundreds of photos of all the different types of people who have been to the spot over the years. What you can’t see as you drive past is the courtyard garden out the back. It’s a great space for a light lunch or an afternoon tea. As well as basic essentials on sale, Warren always has fresh seasonal veggies on sale from local farms (gorgeous plump tomatoes are coming soon) and don’t forget to pick up some of Barb’s home made jams and preserves – a deliciously indulgent treat that’s just too good to miss. Tasting in the Hunter Refreshing ideas for Christmas Christmas is a time for family, friends, good food and even better wine. The warm summer afternoons and balmy evenings offer a great opportunity to enjoy an Australian Champagne or fresh Semillon. For a warm Australian Christmas here are some Christmas wine ideas‌ Sangria is a Spanish favourite and very refreshing. Ideal wines as a base are sparkling Shiraz or Sangiovese. Add lemonade and lots of orange and apple. Frizzante - a sparkling Semillon served with lemon is really refreshing and low in alcohol. When it comes to food nothing can beat matching a Pinot Grigio paired with a Waldorf salad, or grilled prawns with a light salad
drizzled with a good caramelised balsamic vinegar. Still on food, lightly baste your BBQ fish with lemon myrtle infused olive oil as this will give you a light lemon tang and help stop the fish drying out. For the perfect finish to a special meal try a chilled liqueur Muscat with Christmas pudding. Wherever you are, remember wine is for sharing, enjoying and complementing great food - not for excess. (Also worth noting - a News Year’s resolution made under the influence is non-binding!)

Swim challenge from Icon to Icon. Are you Game? It is not often that swimmers get the opportunity to swim from iconic Nobbys spit to the famous Newcastle Beach with a full flotilla of water safety and support on hand. On Saturday 15 December over 300 competitors will put that question to the test in a new Ocean Swimming race being organised by Newcastle Surf Life Saving Club, with event timing managed by H Events. Newcastle is now on the calendar with a challenging swim that has the swim chat rooms busy. The 2km event will swim out between the 2 Nobbys reef breaks and then head south behind the breakers toward the Cowrie Hole and Newcastle Baths to then turn right towards Shark Alley and Newcastle Beach. It’s great to have the support of our neighbour club, Nobby’s Surf Life Saving Club to assist make the swim as safe as possible. Michael Fox of Duckenfield is no stranger to the NSW coast line and competes in Ocean Swims almost every weekend and was last year’s Oceans Swims Series winner. He says, ‘There are plenty of tricky bits along the course, and with an incoming tide swimmers will have to keep well on track to avoid the rocks’. Entries have been received from as far away as Sydney and Tamworth with the main field filled with Hunter residents. For information go to www.hevents.net

Governor’s Residence (Maitland Gaol), John Street, East Maitland Contact: 0458 505 2800 The glamour of 1920’s fashion is highlighted in the current exhibition - it was an era of great change in women’s fashion, the styles were less structured and with more informal designs. Hemlines were shorter and the wearing of boned and tight corsetry was a thing of the past. Women appeared wearing trousers for the first time. Coco Chanel used black for the first time in evening wear, leading to the iconic little black dress. On display are demure day dresses in linen and cotton, beautiful silk nightwear and luxurious evening clothes, handbags, accessories and a hint of bridal wear. Kurri Kurri Mural
Cessnock & Kurri Kurri Cessnock is a sub-region of the Hunter Valley, 120 kilometres north of Sydney, 40 kilometres west of Newcastle and 30 kilometres from the coast. Pastoralists commenced settling the land in the 1820’s. The township of Cessnock developed from 1850, as a service centre at the junction of the Great North Road, with branches to Black Creek (Branxton) and Maitland.

During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. Changes in mining, including automation and the introduction of sophisticated computerised equipment, have lead to the closure of some mines in the area and this, together with the natural ageing of the population, has resulted in a decline in population in some villages over the last twenty years. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing
tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convictbuilt Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures. Kurri Kurri is famous for its Murals, they are a wonderful expression of our history and region, and tours are available all year round, we have many coach groups coming into town to view these amazing outdoor artworks and are proud to be the biggest Mural town in Australia. There are now over 50 murals, making Kurri Kurri the largest mural town in Australia. New murals are currently underway. Don't forget to look for the kookaburra in every mural, some are quite difficult to find. To book a tour, enquire about projects contact the Kurri Kurri VIC 4936 1909.
DECEMBER at the Cessnock Regional Art Gallery Until the 8th December, Cessnock Regional Art Gallery will present Hunting and Gathering, a major exhibition of contemporary sculpture. This exhibition presents the work of some of the state's most exciting sculptors selected from last year's Sculpture in the Vineyards: Stevie Fieldsend, Jenny Herbert-Smith, James McCallum, Flossie Peitsch, Penny Philpott and Nardja Williams. This will be followed from 12th December by Vintage: the lost works of Max Dupain, which brings together two glorious collections of forgotten images of wine grape vintages in the Hunter by the legendary photographer Max Dupain. The McWilliam's Mount Pleasant images are held in the National Library of Australia but are little known within Dupain's wider opus. The equally significant Tulloch photographs
were gifted to the family in an album of original photographs printed by Max himself. Presented together the Mount Pleasant and Tulloch photographs reveal a little known part of Australia's farming past and the labours of love which produced some of the most memorable wines of the early 1950s. Cessnock Regional Art Gallery will close on Sun 22nd Dec, andd reopens on 7th Jan 2014.
Marthaville Guildry Craft and Gift Centre The remains of a well and a slab built shed may still be seen in the Marthaville grounds. A large garden gazebo has been built in the grounds and they are often used for weddings and wedding photographs.
Marthaville is the oldest timber sawn home in Cessnock and still retains many of its original piers, which have been treated to resist the ever-present danger of white ants and borers. Under the galvanised iron roof, timber shingles can still be seen. Three of the rooms have retained their original fireplaces and cedar mantelpieces. The kitchen stove is wood or coal burning. Fuel stoves of this vintage are rarely seen today.
Marthaville is now a vibrant Arts and Cultural Centre, playing host to a wide variety of events, exhibits and activities including Wine Country Bear Club and Floral Art workshops. Marthaville Guildry has operated since 1996, displaying for sale a wide range of arts and crafts made by residents of the Cessnock area. The Marthaville Management Committee received a grant to extend the workshop room to enable bigger workshops, etc. and to provide overflow exhibit space for larger exhibitions. This extension was built during 1996 and through careful restoration and maintenance it has retained its sense of history.
The present grounds are a small portion of what was once a large estate. Many original plants and trees have been retained including the rose garden.
Admission is FREE so call in and see the delightful range of locally hand-made crafts and giftware available, it really is worth a visit.

Curated by Maitland Mercury chief photographer Cath Bowen, the exhibition features over 25 black and white images mined from the Maitland Mercury archives. Local disasters, political agendas, significant social change, fashion flares and even cutting edge popular culture are all featured in this fun and inviting exhibition. With these images we can see Maitland experienced High Street headaches, drama, political upheaval and significant social change. Bowen has assembled a series of images that allow us to peer through the rose coloured glasses of 50 years and nostalgically, or indeed critically, look at how we have grown as a community in Maitland. MRAG invites everyone to take a look; at themselves, their relatives and neighbours from 50 years ago and enjoy 50 years, Picture that in Maitland: 1963. The exhibition will be available all November with the art gallery open Tuesday – Sunday 10am – 5pm. Entry is always free and everyone is welcome.

Morpeth
Morpeth Morpeth is an area of outstanding natural beauty and offers a great experience for everyone who enjoys the pleasure of a walk in a country village with the opportunity of shopping and dining in unique style. It's a little place not far from Maitland, with a history to make us all proud. Morpeth was once upon a time a busy river port and frontier town established during the late 1820's. The Heritage buildings and Bond Stores stand in testament indeed, Morpeth was the largest inland seaport of the new Australian colony and commercial icons Brambles, Simsmetal, Arnotts and Soul's Pharmacy were born in this magnificent place. Set along the banks of the Hunter River, the drive to Morpeth is an added attraction. The green fields stretch for miles and the weeping willows sway in the breeze. It is very hard to find a place to match our beautiful Morpeth. As you stroll through the cobblestoned village you will notice that Morpeth has everything from art galleries to specialty shops to a Trading Post and even a Bazaar. Local artisans and

craftspeople have their wares for sale throughout the town. You will have the opportunity to taste locally made fudge and sip ginger beer. Fine fashion, teddy bears, art and craft, tempting treats to take home, beautiful jewellery, home furnishings and objects of interest, we promise that you will find them in Morpeth. A range of restaurants and cafes offer al fresco dining, river views, heritage surroundings and a cosmopolitan standard of menu. Grab a bottle of the finest wine available for tasting from the local wine cellar then select your café, even the most finicky of foodies will find something to their liking. Morpeth does have its own museum, a service that traces family names and shields, St Johns Theological college and is home to the beautiful St James church to name but a few of the significant buildings throughout the town. Just down the road a way is a structure of a different nature. The infamous Maitland Gaol is now open to the public, experience what it's like to walk in the footsteps of some of Australia's
most notorious criminals. Morpeth, the town, the heritage, the buildings and carriage ways make this a place to not only visit but make a regular event.

The Allyn & Paterson River Valley Tocal - Paterson - Vacy - East Gresford - Gresford There is a lot on offer for visitors to the Allyn & Paterson River Valley, just two and a half hours’ drive from Sydney, an hour from Newcastle and where Dr Henry Lindeman planted his first grape vines in 1843. Here you will discover the towns of Paterson, Vacy, Gresford and East Gresford, ringed by the ancient Moonabung Ranges and criss-crossed by the pristine waters of the two rivers that flow from the Barrington Tops. First stop could be historic Tocal Homestead for tales of the olden days of bushrangers, graziers, and other characters who inhabited one of the greatest Australian cattle and horse studs of its time. Have a look at the rare architect-designed barn built around 1867, and the gracious Colonial Georgian country house. Tocal Homestead is a very popular venue for weddings and milestone celebrations. Paterson has inspired many artists to
pick up a brush to try to capture this picturesque Australian country town on canvas. Look at the many fine old homes, grand commercial buildings, museums, art gallery, pubs, cafes, parks and shops that contribute to Paterson’s unique style. 9km north of Paterson is Vacy, with rugged Mt George to the west. It is well worth a visit to the café, hotel, arts & crafts shop and general store for a taste of country hospitality, great food and quirky crafts. Travel over the Vacy bridge, circa 1898, to Bunna Bunoo olive grove and gift shop. You can see the roof tops of the cabins and lodges such as Banjos Bushland Retreat and Cabins in the Clouds on Mt George, perfect destinations for weekend getaways or a longer stay. The small towns of Gresford and East Gresford are the gateway to Lostock Dam, Mt Allyn and the Chichester State Forest to the north. Take the Allyn
River Road drive past homesteads set among rolling green hills and granite outcrops. Visit Clevedon craft shop, Natural Furniture Works, the Beatty Hotel and Camyr Allyn winery. History lovers will enjoy a drive to St Anne’s Anglican Church and suspension bridge, and St Mary’s on Allyn at Allynbrook. For more information please go to www.apvt.com.au
What to See & Do ■ Treat yourself to Sunday morning brunch at the CBC cafe. ■ Sample superior oils and preserves at Bunna Bunoo olive grove. ■ Experience Camyr Allyn’s inviting cellar door and beautiful surrounds. ■ Pack a picnic and head to Lostock dam. ■ Discover the valley’s many beautiful historic bridges and churches.
