Making it personal These days it is rare to find an artist making, exhibiting and selling their art while also running their own gallery but on Beaumont Street, Hamilton you will find, not one, but two artists doing just that: Barbara Nanshe of Nanshe studio gallery and Ahn Wells of Gallery 139.
Nanshe studio gallery has been operating since May 2012, with Barbara earning her living solely from her art practice (bespoke jewellery) and gallery, where she exhibits a wide variety of art forms including painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics and mixed media by local emerging and established artists. The gallery is located between Tudor and Dension Streets in what Barbara's friends call the ‘Paris’ end of Beaumont Street.
to Sydney later this year to exhibit under the Gallery 139 banner. Both gallery owners have found their galleries benefiting from each other’s closeness. Ahn says, “Visitors can do two galleries, have a coffee, do some op shopping, and buy fresh flowers all in the one trip and that's only our little block of Beaumont Street!” Visit Nanshe studio gallery and Gallery 139 from Wednesday to Friday and Saturday mornings.
Across the road is Gallery 139, now in its second year. The gallery was started by Ahn Wells, who has been exhibiting and curating exhibitions since she completed her Fine Art studies over 10 years ago. Wells opened her gallery “to support and promote Newcastle artists, locally and outside of Newcastle”. She will be taking three of her ‘represented artists’ Barbara Nanshe in front of her work in "Not Just Collage" exhibition at Gallery 139 earlier in 2016.

Gallery hopping through Autumn
THE 16TH ANNUAL
NEWCASTLE EMERGING ART PRIZE 2016
The leaves on the trees have started to turn and the early morning air is now feeling cool. March brings the change of the seasons with autumn the perfect time to take a trip around the local galleries of Newcastle. Highlights would include, from March 11 to 20, Art Systems Wickham for “Waterworks”, the solo exhibition by Peter Read, based around Newcastle's first subterranean drinking water reservoir “Reservoir Number 1”. Peter gained permission from Hunter Water to access the underground maze to complete this intriguing exhibition of sculpture and painting. Not to be missed is Newcastle Art Space, a gallery run solely by volunteers, usually art students or early career artists, who are looking to gain experience in running a professional art space. A themed exhibition “32.9° S 151.5° E” is raising funds for the 16th annual Newcastle Emerging Artist Prize, with artists asked to submit works in response to the title of the geographic coordinates of The City of Newcastle. Make sure you visit the laid back Gallery Sixty One Revisited with it's own in-house mini cafe. If you visit during March 18 to April 14, you'll see the amazing 2015 DiverCity Prize exhibition by Luke Grey, Gillian Anderson and Phillip Ross. What’s the deal with ground coffee?
There are a few things to consider about this question: • What method am I using e.g. Plunger, Espresso? • When am I going to use it? • Is it worth the expense and effort when I can buy it ground already? The coffee making method is an important factor. If you want to drink the best espresso (that includes milk based drinks) from your espresso machine or moka pot then you simply must have a good grinder next to it, no question. The individual grinds deteriorate so quickly (within a few minutes) due to oxidization, that it is difficult to create enough resistance in the basket for the water

to extract the actual coffee flavour from the grinds. When using a plunger the freshness is not as important. When travelling I will take pre-ground coffee for my plunger; it ages gracefully. If I am taking a little espresso maker I’ll pack a good hand grinder. So for espresso you must grind on demand. For plunger you can use pre-ground but it must be ground from fresh beans (up to 10 days old). Many people believe that the more they spend on a coffee machine the better the coffee will be. To some extent that is true but it is far more important to invest in a good grinder. After all the coffee machine just pours hot water over the coffee so if the coffee component is inferior in any way then that will be obvious in the cup.

Tintilla Estate was established in 1994. It is a family-run, 25 acre vineyard and winery in Pokolbin, in the heart of the Hunter Valley wine growing area. Olive trees and woods flank the vineyard with its mosaic of vines planted to match the soils and slopes of the property, creating the unique Terroir that produces our distinctive, individual, award-winning wines. Our careful attention to the vineyard produces healthy grapes with optimal ripeness and varietal character. Our low yielding vines produce rich and concentrated fruit with the acidity and tannins that lead to longevity with a softness derived from the Hunter climate. Here at Tintilla we make traditional Hunter varieties Semillon and Shiraz, we also do Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and pioneered Sangiovese in the Hunter, being the first winery to plant this variety back in the 90s. We now have 4.5 acres of our 25 acre vineyard dedicated to this ancient Italian vine

Raymond Terrace Situated where the Hunter and Williams Rivers meet, about 25 kilometres north from Newcastle along the Pacific Highway, Raymond Terrace is home to Port Stephens Council. It is also the hub for the surrounding river flats farms and communities with two shopping malls and all essential services. The town has been bustling with a variety of industries since the early 1800’s and there are many beautiful historical buildings and attractions to remind of its long history. Good sandstone was quarried close to the town in the 1800’s and used in the local Anglican and Catholic churches, houses and stores. The Old Rectory and historic St. John’s Anglican Church are a wonderful example of these building. The Old Rectory has been lovingly restored and is a beautiful venue for a high tea or other special events. In its early days, a tannery and a steam sawmill were also built, and boat and shipbuilding, farming and dairying became important industries. The business centre developed in King Street, adjacent to the river, where many of the old two storey timber shops and residences still stand today. Nowadays you

Help The Gardens Celebrate 30 Years In 2016 In May 2016 the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens will celebrate its 30th anniversary, nearly 150 years after planning for the establishment of a botanic garden in the Hunter Region commenced. Regarded by many as one of the jewels of the Hunter, the Hunter Region Botanic Gardens have been transformed by dedicated volunteers from a weed-infested 133 hectare bushland site into a botanic collection enjoyed by the community and visitors from around the world. Significantly, 2016 will be a watershed year in the development of the Gardens, with the anticipated formalisation of a long term partnership with Hunter Water which will provide the financial security necessary for the Gardens to maintain its current operations and to provide for future development. The Gardens Board of Directors, volunteers and staff are keen to involve the local Hunter community in our anniversary celebrations and we are planning a number of events in the lead up to May. Highlights from the MRAG Collection 1957-2016 will be on display until the 29th May 2016 and will feature significant and beautiful artworks selected from the entire Maitland Regional Art Gallery (MRAG) Collection - from the first work accessioned in 1957 up to the most recent acquisitions. Within this exhibition are artworks that have become favourites of both visitors and staff such as Margaret Olley’s Banksia, 1970 and John Coburn’s Legend IV, 1965 and artworks that have not been out of the collection store for quite some time, such as Ray Crooke’s, Island Villagers, 1969 and Tim Tjapaltjarri’s Untitled (Fire dreaming), c.1973. It is a pleasure to see them alongside more recent acquisitions that have not yet been exhibited at MRAG, including Charles Blackman’s Untitled (Reclining girl with flowers), 1976, Judy Cassab’s Bonsai, 2005 and Rosemary Laing’s small work from her Paradise Series, 1990-91. Selecting the ’highlights’ was not an easy task with more than 4400 works by hundreds of artists to choose from, so for this exhibition there is a botanical theme to complement the other exhibitions that are also on show at MRAG at this time. One exciting highlight within the exhibition is a section that features a significant recent acquisition a large private collection of Les Darcy items donated to MRAG last December by Iris Darcy, on behalf of her late husband Joe Darcy. Together, this new acquisition of Les Darcy items and the ‘mixed bouquet’ selection from the Collection demonstrate what a very important cultural asset the MRAG collection is, not only to the City of Maitland but also to the nation.

Kurri Kurri and Cessnock to Wollombi
Credit: Destination New South Wales
A rich wine growing area During the 1860’s, land settlement was extensive between Nulkaba and Pokolbin with wheat, tobacco and grape growing, the main crops. Coal mining was the principal industrial base of the Cessnock area for over fifty years. The Hunter Valley wine-growing area in Cessnock City is one of Australia’s oldest wine regions and one of the most famous with around 4,500 acres under vine. The vineyards of Pokolbin, Mount View and Allandale, with their rich volcanic soils tended by entrepreneurial vignerons, are also the focus of a thriving and growing tourism industry. The town has a number of fine restaurants, guesthouses and galleries. The Convict Trail is a conservation project that is restoring the convict-built Great North Road. This is one of Australia's national historic treasures. 26

In February, 1890, an Aberdeen correspondent having little news of importance to relate, contributed the following colourful account. It seems that Aberdeen's energetic flour miller, Mr Schrader, last week had a thrilling experience, through the running away of the horse attached to the cart he was driving. It appears, by some unaccountable means, the winkers came off the mare he was driving, when she took off at a gallop, going up a very steep hill, and when on the top turned sharply around and went at full gallop down the hill side, a place where few men would even venture to walk. Mr Schrader now reclining on his back in the bottom of the cart, if reclining it could be called, being continually bumped up and down. When they arrived at the bottom, and got onto a level road, Mr Schraeder decided that he was never intended to be an Indian rubber ball, so he made a partnership dissolution with the cart, by jumping out behind, when, lo and behold, the road seemed to fly from under him, and he kissed mother earth with more force than was compatible with his dignity or personal appearance, leaving behind him several pieces of skin from off his forehead and nose. The horse eventually over-turned the cart, and calmly laid there viewing the azure canopy. We are glad to say Mr Schraeder had since recovered, and was going about his usual milling occupation. At first Mr August Schrader had been a miller at Scone. He was born in 1834, in Prussia, and trained to the milling business. After serving his term in the Prussian Army, he came out to Australia in 1861, being engaged by the Hon. James White, of Denman, with whom he remained for upwards of fourteen years. In 1875, Mr White purchased the Segenhoe Estate, and rebuilt thereon the old flour mill, which Mr Schraeder leased. From there he moved on to Aberdeen.
Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival 18, 19 and 20 March 2016 Rock ‘n’ roll comes to town for the annual Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival in March. Enjoy free live entertainment throughout the weekend from great bands including Voodoo Rhythm Shakers, Shelley & Lawrie Minson, Rattlesnakes, At the Hop, Jumpin Jukebox and Cherry Divine. Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival is now in its second decade and has established itself as one of the Hunter’s premier festivals, featuring all things rock ‘n roll, cars, music, fashion and dancing. The weekend attracts crowds of people to our town, making it one of the largest festivals of its kind in Australia and a feature tourism event. There is something for everyone at the Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival - with a range of free entertainment over the weekend, including live rock ‘n’ roll bands and 50s music, classic cars and hot rod displays, retro market stalls, children’s rides, dancing and retro fashion parades. Dressing up and dancing in the streets is just part of the fun!
Our best dressed competitions are now so popular that we have four separate categories - Traditional Best Dressed, Junior Best Dressed, Couples Best Dressed and a pin-up section called Miss Modern Day, which recognises the growing popularity of the scene and allows for girls that incorporate reproduction clothing, tattoos and piercings in their look. There are great prizes in each category on Saturday and Sunday. Our special guest judge this year will be the lovely Shelley Minson, winner of Pinup America magazine photo competition. There are also a variety of night time dance and music events at local venues. A highlight is the Rock N Roll Express, including a twilight steam train ride and live entertainment at one of the more unique local venues, Richmond Vale Railway Museum. So polish your car, press your dress and shine your shoes, we’re bringing back the good times. For the full programme and more information visit: www.kurrikurrinostalgiafestival.com.au

Hart & Hunter are set for another great year! What a ride it has been for winemaking couple Damien Stevens and Jodie Belleville since they secured the first Shiraz fruit in 2009, for their Hart & Hunter label. The first trophy arrived a mere 12 months later and has since been joined by a further TWELVE trophies proudly adorning the Hart & Hunter cellar door. In 2014, whilst quitting their day jobs and having their second child they decided what better time to open their own cellar door. The Hart & Hunter cellar door is an intimate, inviting space, overlooking the vineyards, with a turntable in the corner, where you are encouraged to choose your own tunes to enjoy whilst tasting. Seven years on, Damien & Jodie, still very passionate about honouring the Hunter Valley with the Single

Vineyard series, have introduced a new range to their portfolio, named the Black Series. This range inspires them to create something a little unique and invokes memories of vintages and travels gone by. Of particular interest is Dr B’s 2015 Black Series Fiano, named in homage to ‘Dr. B’, their host, dreamer and all around good bloke, during a 2006 vintage in Italy. This wine is made in the traditional Italian style with extended skin contact creating a super textural wine with extended palate length and weight. The palate is rich and alluring, tantalising in its crispness, with orange, honeysuckle and ginger beer-esque characters. And it doesn’t look like 2016 is going to slow down too much, with some exciting collaborations, a new label and the launch of a range of interesting wine experiences for individuals and groups. Jodie and Damien invite you to pay them a visit at the cellar door, so you can experience the great wines and warm and friendly service that comes with a Hart & Hunter tasting. If you can’t make it soon but would like to try the wines, visit www.hartandhunter.com.au or give us a call and we can send you a ‘Hart Starter’ sample pack to start your journey. MARKETS GUIDE Handmade in the Hunter Markets
Come and Celebrate with us! Handmade in the Hunter Markets will be 5 years old on Saturday, 16 April. We started 5 years ago with 6 stalls and a vision to be a 100% handmade market that featured local artists, artisans and food producers. With that meager start and lofty vision, we have evolved to 50 high-quality and unique stalls. Since we are ‘space-challenged’, we choose to focus on variety of items rather than a huge quantity of stalls selling the same types of things. On any normal market day, we do not have 2 stalls selling the same types of handmade items. However, on this milestone event, most of the stallholders will be present to celebrate together. We will be opening up extra areas to accommodate everyone. Also, the Pokolbin Rural Fire Brigade will be there with their fire trucks for the kids to climb on, free give aways as well as doing some fundraising for themselves. There will be free birthday cake as well as a few more surprises that will make this a great day out.
