December From the Editors Well, the festive season is upon us and there is no better place to relax and enjoy your Christmas holidays than on the South Coast. This month there are Christmas celebrations galore. The annual Gerringong Street Parade is on again and there are carols by candlelight events to enjoy in Kiama and the Shoalhaven. As we race to the end of 2011, you can see in the New Year with fireworks displays around the South Coast. Check out our ‘What’s On’ page for the details. The South Coast also has much to offer for your Christmas shopping. In Kiama, head for Kiama Terrace Gift Shoppe for an amazing variety of confectionery and gifts. To give an authentic taste of the region’s fresh food look no further than the Christmas gift packs at South Coast Providores in Berry. If it’s a special piece of jewellery you’re after, Ackroyd Opals in
Berry has a fresh supply of stunning new opals from a recent mining expedition. For the South Coast’s greatest choice of gifts in one location, head for Jindyandy Mill in Pyree, East of Nowra. See the advertisement and article on pages 30 and 31 for all the details. We continue enjoying the South Coast’s favourite pastimes this month with our expanded Boating, Camping and Fishing on the South Coast feature, and we focus on Coolangatta Estate in our continuing series of articles about the region’s wineries. From us, we wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy, safe and prosperous 2012. See you around the South Coast.

Memories are made in the summer holidays as many kids catch their first fish from the myriad of south coast wharves and jetties. The secret to keeping the kids entertained and enthralled lies in some good old fashioned bait and berley. It only takes a few minutes to grab a couple of loaves of bread and the remains of a good Christmas feed of prawns and you’re away. Simply mix the prawn heads and shells into a bucket with the bread and water until you have a slurry. Shovel the berley one scoop at a time with a cut down plastic milk container into the water and then toss in a cooked peeled prawn on a no 4 hook with a really really tiny ball sinker and light line and you’re in for hours of entertainment. Add a small float attached either side of a small swivel if you’re chasing mullet, and don’t forget to remind the kids why we throw the really small, and the really big fish back. Hiring a professional guide is also a great way to learn new skills and hopefully hook that fish of a lifetime. BOATING, CAMPING & Stingray Sterndrive Surprise! Boat Fishing Magazine’s Jim Harnwell recently tested a Stingray bowrider from Nowra Powerboats and discovered a crossover sports boat that blurs boundaries… If you’re into water skiing, or just cruising around with the wife and kids, then Stingray probably has a boat for you. If you’re a fisho, well, the 195FX tested here is the only boat in the Stingray range which has any fishing credentials to speak of. The FX is based on Stingray’s LX, which is a stock standard bowrider/ski boat. The main differences between the FX and the LX is that the FX has forward and rear casting decks, a mount for an electric engine, tackle storage, and a livebait tank (mounted under the rear seat). The hull, seating arrangements, engine options and basic layout are fundamentally the same.
a “fish and ski” boat and that’s a pretty apt description. The 195FX we tested was fitted with a fuel injected 4.3 litre V6 Volve Penta sterndrive. Rated at 225hp, this is a sweet engine that gives this boat excellent performance and fuel economy. The FX’s flat rear deck, which is actually the engine cover, offers unimpeded casting and fishing access. Most of us are used to having an area at the back of the boat taken up by the outboard – that’s a significant amount of fishing area lost. In this boat it’s all open, meaning you can cast and fish out the back with no hassles. This is a major benefit that has to be experienced to be fully appreciated.
The FX is spruiked by Stingray as being
for inshore use – although Nowra Powerboats owner George Klapsis regularly takes this boat out fishing in Jervis Bay, which can get pretty choppy. George reports good performance, even in decent swells. George and I targeted estuary perch and bass from the FX, with two chunky little EPs to me and a solid Shoalhaven bass to George. This fish was chasing prawns along a rock wall and George landed a cracker cast hard up against the rocks with a green coloured Chubby diver to get a solid strike the second the lure hit the water. All up, I was surprised by the efficiency of the Stingray 195FX as a fishing platform.
The sterndrive seems to perform just as well as an outboard, uses less fuel and costs the same, maybe even less.
There are no doubt better, more specialised fishing craft out there but the general fishability of this boat, combined with the excellent performance and economy of the Volvo Penta sterndrive, make the Stingray an interesting option to consider – especially if you like skiing as well as fishing.
This sort of boat is designed primarily

The Roo Theatre Company’s Children’s Theatre Performance Group presents “The Pied Piper” By special arrangement with Dominie Pty Ltd By David Wood & Toni Arthur The Pied Piper is based on the traditional tale made famous by Robert Browning, and uses much of Browning’s poem. This adaptation has the Piper making his first appearance as a modern busker, delighting the children with his music. Their parents, though, are not so delighted and soon put a stop to the energetic dancing, telling the children and the busker that music has been banned on this street for hundreds of years. The children ask why. In reply, the townsfolk act out the story of the Pied Piper, playing their medieval counterparts and involving the children and the busker as the Piper. But when the tale is told, the Piper once again enchants the children with his music, and the horrified townsfolk suddenly realise that he has come back to claim his fee, refused to him all those years ago. All ends happily, however, for it seems that, consumed
Illawarra Fly Treetop Adventures by guilt, the medieval townsfolk put aside the thousand gilders, just in case the Piper should ever return. The Piper accepts his fee, and frees Hamelin from his curse at long last. Friday 2nd December 7.30 pm Saturday 3rd December 1.30 pm & 7.30 pm Tickets: Adults: $12 Concessions: $6

Kiama - Jamberoo Kiama The coastal town of Kiama is said to gain it’s name from the aboriginal word Kiaram-a which when translated from the local aboriginal language “where the sea makes a noise”, is undoubtedly referring to the famous ‘Kiama Blowhole’. At present, there is a wide assortment of things to do and see in the Kiama area. Walking tracks ensure that you can visit the Lighthouse, Kiama Harbour and both the Main and Little Blowhole with ease. Fishing, beach swimming and exploring the rock pools are also great activities. Some great cafes line the main street for those looking for a bite to eat and the Sandstone Terrace Shops make a great place to browse with friends. The Kiama Terraces in Collins Street date from around 1886 and are now classified by the National Trust. Many of the historical buildings can
www.southcoastimag.com.au
also be viewed and a top heritage walk leaflet is available at the Kiama Visitor's Centre.
Jamberoo
Jamberoo was opened up for grazing in the 19th century and, at the time, much of the original rainforest was shipped out to Sydney as building material. Jamberoo was settled in the 1820's when it abounded in dense vegetation and rainforest. Jamberoo today is a small but quaint village and visitors will enjoy a leisurely drive out to the town past the rolling hills and countryside. Jamberoo still houses many of the original churches and the schoolhouse with the local pub's age dating back to 150 years ago. Fredericks General Store in Allowrie Street can provide you with a local map should you need one. Minnamurra Rainforest Reserve and Jamberoo Recreation Park are top

What to See & Do
Gerroa is the closest town to Seven Mile Beach National Park, a grand and inspiring sweep of sand with an extensive dune system and a wealth of bird and mammal life. Gerroa developed as a holiday town, although Seven Mile Beach had been used for horse racing as early as the 1860s. In 1933, aviator Charles Kingsford-Smith used this beach as the runway for his pioneering flight across the Tasman to New Zealand. Gerroa offers easy access to several national parks and fine beaches as well as many of the prime attractions of the Illawarra, such as wineries, quaint country towns and historic attractions. In Season in December Fresh herbs abound with basil being the perfect partner for summer tomatoes. Rocket and salad greens are plentiful. Summer heralds the emergence of sweet red peppers, eggplant and zucchini all perfect for an Italian roasted vegetable platter. Baby zucchini flowers are great stuffed with goat’s cheese, breadcrumbed, and quickly shallow fried in olive oil. Beans, cucumbers and fennel lend colour and crunch to a salad. Best of all is the start of the sweet corn season which grows so well in the Shoalhaven region.

Coolangatta Estate: where south coast wine began
Coolangatta Estate is where it all began. Not only is it the site of the South Coast’s first European Settlement, it’s also the beginning of the local wine industry. The first grapes on the South Coast were grown on the foothills of Mt. Coolangatta by Alexander Berry in the mid 1800s, but it was not until the 1980s that Greg Bishop—son of estate owner Colin Bishop—saw the potential to re-establish vineyards on this historic site. Convinced that good wine grapes could grow in a maritime climate, Greg Bishop planted a vineyard of Sauvignon Blanc on the eastern slopes of Mt. Coolangatta, naming the vineyard ‘Cullengatty’. His sweat, study and professional consultation paid off, when in 1990, the inaugural vintage of Sauvignon Blanc was hand-picked at the estate and sent to Tyrrells to be vinified.
Since 1990 the range of entirely estategrown wines has grown to include Semillon, Verdelho, Chardonnay, Savagnin, Chambourcin, Tannat and Cabernet Sauvignon More recently Tempranillo has been planted. The delicate combination of Shoalhaven Coast’s maritime climate and geology, cool coastal sea-breezes,
sophisticated viticulture and the expertise of winemaker Andrew Spinaze (2004 Australian Winemaker of the Year) have seen Coolangatta Estate’s white wines rated among Australia’s best. Coolangatta Estate’s medium-bodied red wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Tannat and Chambourcin, have also become known for their fine tannins and elegant fruit character and claimed awards at national wine shows. Owing to its 20 year partnership with winemakers’ Tyrrell’s Winery in the Hunter Valley, Coolangatta Estate has become the Shoalhaven’s largest wine producer, most awarded winery and only 5 star winery (James Halliday 2011, 2012 editions). By October 2011, Coolangatta Estate Wines had won 117 trophies and over 1350 wine awards at regional, national and international wine shows.

Kangaroo Valley
Kangaroo Valley The original inhabitants of Kangaroo Valley, the ‘Wadi Wadi’ people, shared the valley with kangaroos and other native species. In 1840 a local Pastor declared “This valley takes its name from the numerous kangaroos which abound here”. From the early part of the 19th century, cattlemen like Richard Brooks and Cornelius O’Brien acquired extensive landholdings in the valley. They were followed by Irish settlers who, to the delight of their neighbours, brought with them their “moonshining” skills. Gradually more settlement took place and a patchwork of small farms spread out as far as the escarpments, mainly concentrating on dairying activities. In 1977 the pleasant ambience of the entire valley and village was recognised by the National Trust. An outstanding feature of Kangaroo Valley is the Hampden Bridge across
Cambewarra Mountain Lookout Tea Rooms Come for the View and come back for the Food!
the Kangaroo River with its impressive castellated sandstone towers. Opened to coach and cart traffic in 1898, the bridge was named after the then Governor of New South Wales, Lord Hampden. While visiting Kangaroo Valley make sure you call in at the Pioneer Farm Museum, a time capsule of life as it was 150 years ago. Kangaroo Valley is both pretty and dramatic – remnants of rainforest cling to the steep escarpment, while the Kangaroo River and small creeks crisscross the valley. Here you can enjoy the ideal ingredients of a short break – cafés, galleries, pubs, cabins in the bush and bushwalks. Kangaroo Valley Pottery located in the main street is a great place to pick up some local pottery and landscape artworks.

Oysters can be served hot or cold. Here we have dressed one with a soya and mirin mix and added Vietnamese mint. The Mediterranean one is very finely chopped tomatoes, shallot and basil. In the little hot oyster cups we dressed with a gruyere cheese béchamel and flashed under the griller. And of course we served one natural – just as nature intended with a squeeze of lemon juice. Bomaderry - Terara - Burrier - Yalwal The regional centre of Nowra, situated on the beautiful Shoalhaven River, is a bustling town which contrasts the pleasant laid back lifestyle enjoyed by locals. The broad Shoalhaven River offers a number of recreational possibilities such as fishing, boating and river cruises. Nowra is also a base for local adventure tour operators and options include canoe trips and skydiving. Nowra has a number of historic buildings and houses dating from the Victorian era. Heritage walks and other information can be picked up from the local Visitors Centre. One of the cultural delights of Nowra is nearby Bundanon, the rural property of the late Arthur Boyd which he gave to the nation to be used as a retreat for artists. Along with the district's many wonderful natural attractions, Nowra
itself provides an extensive selection of entertainment for all ages. Live entertainment is found at local clubs, hotels, halls and schools. Cinemas offer the latest releases and touring circuses pitch their colourful big tops throughout the year. The Fleet Air Arm Museum celebrates links with the aviation industry with a display of military and civil aircraft- it is well worth a visit. You can also explore Meroogal a historic timber gothic-style house with one of the most authentic 19th century interiors in NSW.
Terara
Original historic town with buildings dating back to 1850’s. The area is a prime agricultural region with great fresh local fruit and vegetable shops to buy local produce from. Use Millbank Road to cut through to Pyree and closer to the beach.

Pyree
Currarong
Pyree is also home to the historic Jindyandy Mill - a place where past and present come together in beautiful surrounds. On the way out to Greenwell Point, Pyree is a cluster of buildings nestled in lush green pastures - the ideal place to stop for a coffee, lunch or to browse through the shops. The Jindyandy Cottages provide accommodation on site.
Greenwell Point Greenwell Point, a fishing village is 15 km east of Nowra and named after an Aboriginal doctor, 'Greenwell' who was noted for his treatment of snakebites and toothaches. Originally a shipping port for the Shoalhaven, Greenwell Point is famous for its world-class fresh oysters, fish and other seafood available from take away and eat-in food outlets. Recreational activities
include fishing - both estuary or deep sea, or try your luck with a rod and reel near the new boat ramps at the main wharf. The Point Gallery and Craft Shop consists of a visitors information centre teamed with a great local craft and a history section, they also have exhibitions and workshops. A variety of accommodation is available in town.
Currarong is a quiet coastal village located at the northern end of the rugged Beecroft Peninsula and excellent rock fishing can be found all around this area. Stop for great fish and chips at the local takeaway and enjoy a picnic in the nearby park. A number of walks and sheltered swimming areas can be accessed from the road to Point Perpendicular.
Culburra
What to See & Do
Culburra Beach, is the regional centre for the coastal villages east of Nowra. With great surf beaches, there is plenty to do and when the water level is high, sailing, windsurfing and water skiing are all popular. St Georges Basin - Sanctuary Point - Callala Bay - Callala Beach - Myola - Huskisson - Vincentia - Hyams Beach Jervis Bay measures about 15 km from north to south and about 10 km across. The main town is Huskisson, where you can enjoy dolphin and whale watching cruises, fishing trips and boats, but it’s the natural beauty of the area that seduces. Other towns in this area include St Georges Basin, Sanctuary Point, Callala Bay and Beach, Myola, Vincentia and Hyams Beach. The bay’s beaches are impressive a series of scalloped coves bracketed by rock formations and backed by blackbutt, tea tree and mahogany forest. The bay’s sparkling waters, the underwater topography of arches, caves and rock stacks, and an impressive marine population make this one of the finest dive sites in the state. At its southern end, Jervis Bay is enclosed by Booderee National Park, a
pristine coastal wilderness. From Wreck Bay village on Summercloud Bay in the park’s south, a walking trail circles the peninsula to St Georges Head, passing quiet beaches, cliffs and forests. Huskisson is the location of many facililties including the Lady Denman Heritage Museum, as well as a variety of great cafes and shops to explore. Hyams Beach is surrounded by natural bush and is far enough removed from the ‘rat-race’ to be as peaceful a retreat as one can imagine with the added attractions of pure white sand and crystal clear water. The art of buying art
Personal Taste is more important than Fashion Don't be afraid to trust your own intuition. In buying art your personal taste is the final test. You cannot buy something you absolutely hate just because the artist is very popular and it is a good investment. The best choice always takes into account that emotional "click" between you and the piece.

The canal system has in fact caused the business area of Sussex Inlet to now be located on an island - It is known as the "Island Township". Activities include lawn bowling, fishing, sailing, golf, bingo, water skiing and swimming in sheltered waters. There are several boat hire businesses with small motor boats for hire. There are a large variety of wild birds in the area and kangaroos can be seen
feeding on the lawns of the houses at morning and evening. There are many accommodation businesses including caravan parks, cabins, motels, units and holiday homes available for rental. Sussex Inlet is the perfect place to enjoy some fishing with family and friends, turn to the next page to see our tidal chart with current tide times to help you plan your day.
Wandandian The town of Wandandian is located on the Princes Highway between Bewong and Fisherman’s Paradise. Its name comes from the word still used in the Parish of Wandrawandian, which according to older residents has an aboriginal meaning of 'home of lost lovers'. Wandandian’s beautiful rural atmosphere is enhanced by Kladis
Estate Wines, hobby farms, fruit orchards, galleries, arts and craft shops, antiques and nurseries.

Summer garden tips Mulch, Mulch, Mulch. The most important job for your garden! Helps minimise moisture loss saving you time and money. Cut grass longer. By doing this you will protect the roots from the sun and keep the soil cooler. This will minimise watering. Dead heading flowers. Water in the early morning. Watering in the cool of the day minimises evaporation . The benefit of the morning water is it also discourages fungus to develop as the sun will dry off the leaves. Enjoy your garden. What a great time of year to enjoy time with your friends and family out in your garden. Lake Tabourie - Cullendulla Bawley Point - East Lynne - Termeil - Durras - Kioloa Steamships were once built here at Bawley Point. Much of the timber used in the construction of these ships came from Termeil timber; a horse drawn train was loaded with logs and it clip-clopped its way into Bawley Point to be sawn by the timber mill, built in 1910, and at one time employing 72 men. Visitors to Bawley Point or to neighbouring literary-sounding East Lynne can enjoy tranquil beaches, headlands and lagoons where the prawns are a local delicacy, in season. Much of the area here has been reserved as a sanctuary for wildlife. Warm currents extend the swimming season with miles of quiet beaches and headlands fronting the south Pacific Ocean, which is studded with attractive small islands. Behind the coastline lie the lakes of Termeil, Meroo and Willinga, where vegetation and
picturesque views create an idyllic setting to the backdrop of Pigeon House Mountain. The district offers all kinds of fishing, surfing and swimming for all ages. For the bushwalker there are interesting paths to take through the bush or the Kioloa Forest. While in the district, seek out the small roadside cafes and shops where some of the walls and counters are thick with show awards for pies, rolls, cakes and other mouth-watering goodies - all produced in country kitchens.
This park features beaches, rock platforms, spotted gum forests and rainforest gullies, surrounding the beautiful Durras Lake. The extensive forest in the park is home to many animals. Eastern grey kangaroos, swamp and red-necked wallabies can be seen at dawn and dusk when they feed. Stay in a caravan, cabin or tent and enjoy everything the park has to offer - from walking and picnicking to swimming and fishing. Don't forget to visit Murramarang Aboriginal Area.
Murramarang National Park
Cullendulla Creek Nature Reserve
Murramarang National Park was created in 1973, with an area of 1970 hectares. The park was divided, into two sections north and south of Durras Lake, and included four offshore islands. In 2002 the park was increased to 11,978 hectares and now includes Durras Lake.
The reserve is on the northern shore of Batemans Bay and has beautiful views across to the Tollgate Islands. Explore the mangroves along a raised boardwalk. The unusual dune formations here are known as cheniers and are of great scientific interest.
