Originally, the park was named the Hailey National Park after Governor Hailey. It was later in year 1957 when the park got renamed to its current name. It was named after the British Jim Corbett, who played a major role in setting up the park and also was locally revered for shooting down the tigers who developed the taste for human blood. However, he is more popular as shooting the tigers with his camera rather than shooting them with his gun. Additionally, it was him who put Kumaon in the map of the nation by writing about it in his popular book titled "The Man-Eaters of Kumaon". In 1991 the park became more big when the Sonanadi Wildlife Sanctuary got included in the Corbett National Park.
