Roorkee falls under the Haridwar district and comes in the state of Uttrakhand. The city is spread over a flat terrain; on the banks of Ganga and is at the distance of 30km from Haridwar. Roorkee has a rich history. It was the capital of Moghul Mahal during the time when Akbar ruled the land. It later became the part of the territories governed by the British East India Company. It is being said that the city derived its name from Rurimadi Imran, who was the wife of a local Rajput chieftain. Today the town is best known for the large army base and the world famous IIT Roorkee. The town now, is the educational hub of northern-India. There are some finest educational institutions in the town, namely College of Engineering Roorkee, RIT, RIMS, and Bishambhar Sahai Law Institute
