N IT’S HUNTING SEASON! Unit I highlights their feisty perfromance with a snake roll having the head of a lurking Anaconda, sensing victory and redemption. Red Anacondas finally landed at the top of the food chain as they devoured fellow predators, the Werewolves and Jaguars in this year’s Cheerdance Competition. (BGZR)

fter falling short from last year’s competition, Unit I with their new name “Red Anaconda”gobbled the defending champion Yellow Jaguars, in the CSU Olympics Cheerdance Competition, August 20, 2015. Red Anaconda delivered a feisty performance coupled with flawless choreography which catapulted them to the top with an average total point of 96.67%, which Unit II followed with 90.67% and Unit III with 89%. Their performance was capped by dancing routines and synchronized choreography that went with simple lifts and stunts. The performance ended with a crowd-cheering snake roll, where members of the crew formed a giant anaconda. “Most of the routines na ginamit namin ay galing from last year. We also stuck to the basics,” said Silver Jean Bañares, Unit I trainer. Bañares added that Unit I squad members surprised him on their performance. True to his statement days before the performance, Bañares said that they will bring a fiercer performance saying, “Kakainin namin ang Jaguars at werewolves.” Unit I Red Anaconda received a cash prize of Php 15, 000 for being the champion, while Unit II and Unit III received Php 10,000 and Php 7,000, respectively.

Falcons shape-shifted to Werewolves Unit II, then Blue Falcons, carried their broken wings from the last place finish and like Unit I, they went back as Unit II Blue Werewolves with a goal to avenge their loss. “Once na nadaog ka na, dapat kaipuhan mo na magbag-o,” said Michael John Vargas, former CAS SBO president. “Naputol kaya ang pakpak namo kaya nagbag-o kami nin pangalan,” one of the members added. Unit II Werewolves’ performance included a group dance in which they lacked last year. Like Unit I, they also leaned on their choreography and balanced performance. Jaguars took a deep plunge at the bottom Meanwhile, defending champion Unit III Jaguars failed to make a repeat after an accidental technical stop in their performance. “A little disappointed pero ang masasabi ko lang it’s not our fault it’s their fault,” Jeff Bendal, Unit III trainer, said after the performance. “Natangkas su saksakan dahil sa hangin. Baga na ngani madala uni [pertaining to their booth]. Awat magbukas su machine kaya pakabukas pinarewind mi sainda,” said the Audio Link operators. Despite the power interruption, Unit III Jaguars tried to continue

to dance without the music but only stopped when the sound system gained power. This resulted to them repeating their performance, starting on the part where their music stopped. Unit III Jaguars featured a lot of stunts and lifts in which they recorded a handful of falls. But the highlight of their performance was the four-level pyramid, which they also did last year. When asked about if their plans next year includes changing their name, Capistral said that, “Jaguars forever! Once a Jaguar, always a Jaguar.” They also vowed that they will take what is theirs: “Babawiin namin next year.” Tracing Support To show their support, the different Student Body Organizations in every Unit contributed for the uniforms and snacks of their respective squad. Unit I, composed of the CIT, CICT, and CHS, budgeted Php 19, 000 for their squad. While Unit II, composed of CAF, COE and CAS, set Php 21,000 in which College of Engineering pledged to give 50%; Meanwhile Unit III, composed of CBA and CED allocated Php 15,000 for their contingent. In an interview with the CSU Statesman during their rehearsal, the members of the Unit II squad was surprised to hear of the

budget. “Nag-alambagan pa ngani kami nin 175 pesos for our costumes,” said one of the members. The crew added that aside from the snacks that were given to them, the squad also lacked support, saying that the presidents are nowhere to be found during the practice, and that their lunch and fare were all shouldered by them personally. Charmaine Gianan, COE-SBO president admitted that there was a lack of communication, that she also did not know the schedule of the practice. On the other hand, Nilo Brequillo Jr., CAS-SBO president said that there is a communication that happened between the three colleges. “Of course meron pong pag-uusap”. This was denied by Gianan. Price Tag Indeed, new things surfaced in the cheer dance competition this year. Audio Link Sound system was hired other than used the CIMC sound system to address the request of the different squads. The Federated College Student Council (FCSC) raised the budget to Php 35,000 - 15, 000 for the champion; Php10,000 for the 1st runner-up; Php7,000 for the 2nd runner-up; and Php3,000 for other expenses. Olympics ranking, a déjà vu; Unit II still champ Since the Unit reshuffling last year, this combined team of the College of Engineering, College of Arts and Sciences, and College of Agriculture and Fisheries, has reigned supreme in the three-day sports event.

GAME FACE, ON

abagat winds marinated the closing of the 3rd CSU Olympics last August 20, 2015. In Philippine meteorology, the coming of Habagat or Southwest Monsoon signals the arrival of the wet season in Mainland Luzon. Metro Manila for example would be submerged in floodwaters, taking nature’s toll along its path. Nevertheless, the recurrent gust of Habagat is just a foreshadowing of the enormous storm ahead of CSU. For the administration, there lies the quintessential challenge of providing a rigorous and rock-solid sports program for the chosen athletes who will be representing the university in the upcoming regional SCUAA Meet. This means hiring more competent trainers who will guide the athletes in their quest for that elusive gold. This also entails providing adequate training and conditioning facilities that would ensure the overall preparedness of the student athletes in the actual battlefield. Because when we say sports program, it is not just a one-time-big-time game plan that is carried out overnight. It is a strenuous process of player development, be it in physical, technical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects. Meanwhile, we challenge the student athletes to finally break the cycle of mediocrity that continuously pulls down their compatriot’s morale. Remember that we are not joining the Regional SCUAA Meet just for the sake of participation. We are there to compete. Hence, the clarion call is to raise the bar of excellence and slap naysayers in their own faces. The CSU Statesman 2015-2016

Unit II dominated in athletics (men and women’s division), basketball (men and women), badminton (women), boxing, chess (men and women), lawn tennis (men), softball, football, table tennis (men women), taekwondo (men), and volleyball (women).

Unit I ruled in arnis (men and women), lawn tennis (women), sepak takraw, swimming (men and women), and volleyball (men). Unit III (College of Business and Accountancy, and College of Education) was declared second runner-up with 14 gold, 58 silver, and 23 bronze medals, while Unit IV (CSU-Panganiban Campus) was third runner-up with nine gold, 31 silver, and 29 bronze medals. Meanwhile, in the Search for Sports Ambassador and Ambassadress, Noli Sesalim Jr. (Unit IV) and Cyl Gellaine Tablada (Unit III) were declared winners. (Ace John F. Tabuzo)

Champions find ways to succeed. Losers make excuses. While last school year’s performance was laudable, it cannot guarantee another stellar performance this year. It can be noted that in recent years, the 2014-2015 delegation can be considered the best contingent the CSU has ever had after fielding the most number of delegates to the National SCUAA Meet. But greatness is not measured by a single success story alone. Michael Jordan, considered as the greatest player to ever play the game of basketball, said in one of his classic interviews that what makes him great is his work ethics. He said that he trains harder because he knows somewhere out there, someone bleeds in training just to beat him. Consistency should never be taken out of the equation if we aspire of maintaining a chart-topper performance, if not dominating the regional sports gala. Lastly, we encourage the whole studentry to show support to our athletes. It has been said that the greatest teams on earth achieved great things not through the many might of one but through one might of many. We are part of this great team in the making that is CSU. May we all have that undaunted Catandunganon spirit that says, “Give me a challenge and I’ll meet it with joy.” Rise to the challenge. Weather the storm. It’s time to put the real game face on.
