Tom and Patsy Hoeferlin were considering downsizing from their larger home where she found this villa under construction in the Orchards. It was in the stud phase, and they both fell for the home. It had such a lovely atmosphere, and they liked how it was just the right size for the two of them. And it is situated right in the heart of the city which is a wonderful location, close to everything. At first, they were a little apprehensive about giving up their larger space, but they love how their home has turned out. During the months of building, they were able to be involved in the details and finishes. They began planning the design with their friend and designer, Theresa Heckman. They’ve been working closely together for years and they enjoy their relationship. Together Theresa and Patsy developed a beautiful design that turned out amazing. “The Hoeferlin’s wanted their home to reflect their welcoming and approachable personalities,” shared Theresa. “They are so fun to work with. Over the years, I’ve learned how to help interpret the tone for their home; tasteful, uncluttered and comfortable. Patsy has a wonderful eye for what she loves, and Tom is happy to let Patsy make the key design decisions.” Their touch is evident throughout the home, reflecting her love of transitional style and neutral colors.

The house literally opens up creating a large living space where light is reflected in the surface finishes. They chose a hand-scraped hardwood which is used throughout the home to maintain visual flow. In their living room, there is plenty to catch the eye. The neutral palette enhances this relaxing space. A large wool rug anchors the space and seating was chosen that is both comfy and beautiful. The modern fireplace is a study of how to combine unrelated tiles to create something unexpected. They chose a sophisticated wood tile and combined it with a dimensional gold tile that glimmers and gleams when they have a fire. Overhead the coffered ceiling features an ‘X’ which was faux finished to look like wood. The simple lines and angles create another interesting design element. Their use of materials in the living room delivers a sense of urban elegance. Carefully chosen accessories appropriately scaled for the space create an intriguing display in this room.

At the heart of the open-plan living space is the kitchen. This area gets a great deal of use. Patsy loves to cook, and the central island is multifunctional. This is a very smart working kitchen where two people can easily work. Dual drum shaped light fixtures over the island with fabulous painted wood beads create a modern, yet glamorous appeal. Patsy’s love of baking necessitated a second island with a stainless-steel top. It was designed a bit taller to make it easier to roll out pie crust and knead homemade bread. The stunning design and custom finish on this unique baker’s table perfectly suites the impeccable design.
th The beautiful cabinetry design utilizes simple lines to create a powerful impact on the open plan living space. A subtle color change on the island just adds enough of a difference to make it stand out and become a beautiful display space when not in use. They chose to mix the finishes on the marble quartzite countertops. A gloss finish was used on the perimeter cabinetry, and they chose a honed finish for the island. The backsplash features handmade subway tiles in one area and coordinating pencil tiles in another. Mixing colors, finishes, materials and textures always make a big design impact. They may seem subtle, but when combined they are what makes the design come to life.

Entering the dining room through the arched stone opening, the walls feature an unexpected burst of glimmer and sheen. When we walked in, it took our breath away, and we couldn’t resist touching it. The texture felt as if the wallpaper was created from finely crushed stone and mica chips. It’s a wonderfully beautiful place to enjoy the company of friends and family while sampling some of Patsy’s culinary treats. Theresa helps them to consider things they hadn’t thought about. For instance, the beautiful light fixture is a perfect example of this— they could have opted for the more obvious chandelier, but this elongated chandelier perfectly fits the space, and Theresa found it while at market. Here is where subtle design choices combine to add a cohesive quality to a finished home. The gold shades are complemented by the gold finish on the crown molding, which is also reflected on the gold accent tiles of the fireplace. These special touches give this house individuality. Fabrics in this room make a huge impact. The Hoeferlin’s hadn’t had their dining chairs for very long, and wanted to use them, but the fabric wasn’t right for their new home. Theresa chose a neutral fabric and added the trim detail, so they now work in the space.

Window treatments in a geometric pattern fabric frame the large windows. “We needed large artwork in here as anything smaller would be lost, says Theresa. They chose a large-scale interpretation of a traditional print and combined it with an abstract piece of art. The use of accessories appropriately scaled for the space created an intriguing display in this dining room that can be changed with the seasons.

Downstairs there is ample room for gathering, lounging and entertaining. Playing off a neutral background, they chose a warmer color palette. An eclectic mix of transitional furniture pieces in walnut wood tones and contemporary upholstery accented by medium toned fabrics. A pair of grey leather chairs finish off the comfortable gathering space. Custom European style cabinetry captures your imagination from the moment you enter. A barrel shaped detail on the custom cabinetry is reminiscent of a wine tasting room. Charming details like the metal strapping, arched granite and ‘brick tile’ backsplash and wine storage cabinetry with ‘X’ design element infuses the room with a warmer rustic feel.

Looking back, Tom and Patsy have no regrets about their choice to downsize. Their personal touches have transformed a house into their home. The final result makes them smile every time they walk through the front door. “We are fortunate to work with a designer who understands us and our needs. We’re always lifted up when we’re here because the house feels like it is a true reflection of us at this time in our journey,” says Patsy.

Extending your home’s square footage with outdoor rooms can result in hours of quality family time where you can relax and spend time together. In the case of these homeowners, Stockman Stonework’s design ideas were a perfect answer to taming the hillside and creating usable rooms that fit their home’s surroundings. The homeowners wanted to completely change the look of not only the backyard, but the front as well. This project was going to be
a big job and cost control was very important to the homeowners. They decided to break the project down into phases. In 2013, they tackled the first phase in the backyard. The homeowners have children and to better serve the growing family, Stockman Stoneworks began by focusing on the existing pool area to build an outdoor retreat for the family. The homeowners wanted a place where they could relax yet still be
able to keep an eye on the children playing in the pool. The perfect solution was achieved by adding stone steps with decorative rock on the side of the home to allow access from the front to the back of the home. They added a new fence and retaining wall to allow privacy and prevent water runoff from reaching the pool. The level patio looks beautiful at night with the installation of ambient lighting. The family’s backyard retreat was completed in 2013. WWW.CAPITALLIFESTYLES.NET

The family enjoyed their backyard, and in 2017 they were ready to begin phase two of their makeovers: the front of the home. Chad Stockman was ready to take on the challenging plan of this family’s makeover. The front yard had a tie wall that had to be removed. New soil was brought in to level out the area. Retaining walls with decorative rock were built to create a barrier against water damage. Large stone steps at the front of the home allowed for an elegant entrance to the home.

Next, pavers were added for the deck to create a beautifully natural look to the existing home. Pilasters were brought into the design to create stone fencing which pulled the design together. The final makeover resulted in beautiful seating areas which allow them to enjoy their wooded lot from different vantage points. Many of us in Mid-Missouri are experienced with the damage that water and erosion can do to property. These homeowners invested in a multi-phase plan where Stockman Stoneworks integrated a beautiful design into a permanent solution. They incorporated the new curbstone curb and gutter system to direct water to a new location with ease. This new system is very effective, decorative and doesn’t break the budget.

Fur-Ever
HOME It’s a dog’s life has a whole new meaning in today’s homes. The days of the family dog being separated from the family and living outside in a dog house tucked away at the far back corner of the yard is a thing of the past. Our furry family members, both dogs and cats, have moved indoors. They have become an integral part of the family pack. Today, if you don’t find Reggie on the family’s sofa, you will find him on his own pet-size furniture. Some of us are even guilty of having purchased an extra chair that is just for our four-legged friends. 48 |
CAPITAL LIFESTYLES FALL 2018
Families are converting any extra spaces in the home into their pet’s favorite hideaways. Under the stairs and underneath window seats have become perfect sanctuaries for our fur buddies. Even closets, coffee tables and old entertainment centers have been repurposed into cozy bedtime spaces for our friends. These quiet, comfortable enclosed spaces remind our fur-friends of their ancestral dens. Homeowners are definitely considering their pets’ needs during the design process. When remodeling and building
their new homes, pet centered spaces are being incorporated into the home’s design with doggy spas and grooming centers. Small showers are being added to mudrooms and bathrooms, making bath-time easy. Food prep and storage is easy with pullout shelves in the kitchen for dog food bowls. Even though pets and interior design don’t normally mix, you can have a beautiful, stylish Fur-Ever Home by incorporating creative designs that are going to the dogs (and cats) with pooch-friendly spaces and conveniences.

heart of
Few things are as peaceful was waking up, looking out the window and watching the river roll by. Obsessed with the peaceful sounds of the river, it’s truly hard to beat the tranquility and sense of peace and self-discovery that a body of water in your back yard can stir in a human being. Inspired by their close ties to nature, Bobbi and Nick Price built their dream home at their dream location on the river. They were passionate about creating a comfortable home for their active family
of four. Being close to nature was a top priority. This custom river-front home with a rustic feel marries interior with exterior to create an ideal environment for family, recreation and entertaining guests. The Prices’ are no stranger to building and design. Thru their business, Carved in Stone, they have been involved in the local building industry since 2007. When it came to their own home, they love the warmth of aged wood combined with stone, and wanted the
design of the home to tie into the rustic vernacular. Their vision led them to the use of reclaimed wood flooring which they laid on the diagonal. They were fortunate to find an old barn that could be disassembled and repurposed in their home.
Throughout the house, a slightly-oversized design style was applied to the features of the rooms to help them feel even larger and inviting in order to accommodate as many family members as possible and still make everybody feel cozy.

From the floor to the ceiling, they used rustic wood elements to create the comfortable space they envisioned. Wood beams highlight the cathedral ceiling and help frame the beautiful view of the river. The fireplace is flanked with custom cabinetry. The fireplace is a testament to the artistic possibilities of granite. A single slab of granite is used to create a special feature in their living room. The story that the combination of wood and stone can tell powerfully impacts this design. Bobbi lightened up the look a bit by injecting a few contemporary furniture pieces. But, the use of granite and glass for the stair railings demonstrates how rustic materials can read as a contemporary design element.

The rustic flooring continues into the kitchen. The extensive stonework on the island and the perimeter cabinets were specifically chosen early in the planning process. Bobbi knows her stone and before planning the details of the rest of the room she had chosen a gorgeous combination of onyx and granite.

A bit of the contemporary lives in this kitchen. Black cabinetry is paired with a beautifully thick onyx countertop on the island. The dramatic statement is continued with the use of leather look black granite. Not only can you see the breathtaking movement in the stone, but you can feel the rich texture! Crackle glass pencil tiles are installed vertically, and Bobbi paired modern patterned fabrics with a handmade wood table in the dining space. The custom banquette maximizes the seating. Just imagine being able to enjoy a river view every time you sit down to have a cup of coffee or enjoy a meal together.

The home’s rustic contemporary style culminates in the master suite. The dark accent wall adds balance to the main focal point in the room… the fireplace. A solid slab of granite surrounds the TV, but the electric fireplace is the real showstopper. The simplicity of the lines and the ethereal glow brings a romantic element to the room. It’s the ensuite bath where the same granite is used on the walls of the shower that deserves a second look. The drama created from the use of stone, glass and rich wood cabinetry creates an artful vignette.

light & bright In their daughter’s bathroom, they injected a colorful and happy design scheme. They used the repurposed barn wood on the floor, except the chippy paint keeps it light and bright. The shower granite is stunning!
It is difficult to see in the photo, but there is a tone on tone pattern etched onto the granite. As the parents of pre-teen and teenage children, the Price’s let the kid’s personality shine in their rooms. Their bathrooms
are to die for! In the son’s bathroom a dark slab of granite lines his shower wall, and it is accented with a wall of crackle glass pencil tile. That same tile is repeated floor–to–ceiling on the wall behind the vanity.

They needed their home to be able to withstand the challenges of living on the river. They built high enough to avoid damage to their main living space. Under the home is everything concrete, and they used 10 X 10’s to build the steps leading to the main level. If the river overflows its banks, it all can be easily power sprayed and returned to usable storage. It’s just part of living on the river, and you have to take it in stride and be prepared. Family, comfort and the outdoors were the Price’s main priorities when building their new home on the river. Living on the river is more of a spiritual experience than living anywhere else. It’s an island of tranquility away from the hustle and bustle. A place to decompress. Sitting on the patio relaxing while waving at passing boats is a seriously idyllic way to spend your days. drawn to the
outdoors
A successful remodel is often a collaboration between the homeowner and builder. That is most certainly the case in this total outdoor transformation of Margaret Wieberg’s lake home. Margaret and her husband had purchased their lake home get away several years ago. After he passed away, she decided to move
off their farm and live at the lake full time. The home originally had wood siding and multiple wood decks. They had lived a useful life, but they were becoming an on-going maintenance issue. She wanted to limit maintenance and insure she would be able to live in the lake home she loved long-term.
When discussing her dream backyard with her son, he told her that Nathan Voss was the only builder he would trust to create the multi-level living spaces she was thinking of. When she met with Nathan, they discussed her options and worked out a plan to integrate three levels of outdoor living space into the natural hillside that makes up her backyard. | 69
70 |
CAPITAL LIFESTYLES ï‚š FALL 2018
Originally, she had intended to only replace the wood decking and add much need structure to the backyard, but as they assessed the condition of the exterior siding, it became apparent all the exteriors needed to be replaced. They embarked on an eight-month construction journey that led to Nathan and his crew building block retaining walls, pouring a concrete driveway, adding the structure for three levels of concrete decking, adding a patio next to the lake with a firepit, and completing the exterior update. The total transformation includes a Juliet deck at the highest level of the home. Those staying on the upper level can enjoy a special perspective of the lake views. She made the most out of her outdoor living spaces with the amazing transformation. The screened outdoor room is an oasis for her eight grandchildren. Water and sun go handin-hand, but a bit of shade offers welcome relief. The railings and screens create a sense of enclosure without taking away from the main reason the family is drawn to the outdoors‌. the lake views. WWW.CAPITALLIFESTYLES.NET
| 71
New concrete retaining walls define the spaces bringing structure to the hillside. Maintenance was a major concern when choosing the best materials for the long-term enjoyment of the home. After all she was creating a magnet to insure her kids and grandkids would visit often. Metal railings and stairs offer a modern design element and keep the view to the lake open. The concrete decking was stamped to bring a natural element to the design. The patio edging created by the talented crew is reminiscent of natural stone.
Supplier List Nathan Voss Construction Scruggs Lumber Matt Rademan Landscape Southerlin Electric
The hillside was layered with different levels. As you head lakeside, you can stop and pause to enjoy the lake views from multiple perspectives. The stamped concrete patio with stone firepit is a beautiful place to relax close to the lake. There’s plenty of room for the entire family to gather round and roast hot dogs, or enjoy the soothing effects only the combination of fire and water can produce.
Charley Town Fabrication
Since maintenance was a big priority, she eliminated any grassy areas by having stone brought in. She softened the hardscape with low maintenance planters. The inverted pyramid design is filled with flowers. Colors change with the seasons, and the flowers add a dose of friendliness and welcome.
Renner Supply Company
As Margaret talked about the project and gave us the tour, it felt as if we had known one another for years. Her gentle spirit and the sentimental attachment to this lake home was revealed. It’s easy to understand what drew her to make this her home. Margaret’s vision and special touches breathed new life into a much-loved lake home that will be a gathering place for her family for years to come. 72 |

A
GOOD
LIFE
FAMILY. HOME. HONOR. LOVE.
When we met Bob and Vickie Aegerter, we were instantly at ease with them. They welcomed us into their home like we were old friends. As the home tour progressed and they shared their story of what they wanted in the home, we got the sense that this family has experienced the good and bad together and have come out the other side stronger and happier for it. Bob spent his career in the military and Department of Defense. 76 |
CAPITAL LIFESTYLES ď‚š FALL 2018
His responsibilities took him away from time-to-time, but you can tell that the family considers service to their country a privilege. Their son, Shaun, has Cerebral Palsy so they made sure that the home would be fully accessible for his needs. The home they built with the help of Paulette Kreter and Dean Holtmeyer speaks to their need for a home that is accessible as they age in place but will also meet the needs of their son Shaun.
The Aegerter’s spent a great deal of time with Paulette working on the design and how to incorporate their needs into a home that serves the needs of the entire family. Bob wanted more room for his truck, and they both wanted more room to spread out. They broke ground in August of 2016 and moved into the home in July of 2017. It was so rewarding because they got
to love it as it progressed. Working with Dean and everyone on the project was a pleasure. Colorado is their favorite state, and this is as close as they’ll get to a Colorado mountain home. With the help of Korie Bock at Scruggs, they integrated as much of that feel into this home as they could. She helped pick out all of the colors, stains and finish materials.

Lounging poolside is a particularly favorite pastime for the Aegerter’s. The pool was designed with shallow steps to make it easy for Shaun to swim and get the therapeutic benefits a pool offers. Their decking and patios on one side, combined with the pool house on the other create a private enclosure. They have so much fun when their other son, Scott, and his wife, Lisa visits. They always have a great time. There is plenty of space to have gatherings of family and friends, and there is plenty to do to enjoy this outdoor family area. WWW.CAPITALLIFESTYLES.NET

Everything was done to minimize maintenance. Stone columns, aluminum posts and fencing enclose the pool decking, and they are a beautiful architectural design element. It’s like going on vacation anytime you want.

A HOT MOVIE SEASON TO WARM UP YOUR WINTER Bumblebee (N/A) I am not a fan of the previous entries in the current Transformers film series, however, this prequel set in the 1980s and starring everyone’s favorite little yellow bug-bot appears to be steering the franchise in a better direction! Action shots so you can actually make out what is happening, charming and likable human characters, designs reminiscent of the original toys and cartoons, as well as a much more credible director at the helm may work well in making the sixth time a charm for these flicks! Only time will tell of course, but I’m optimistic!
Creed II (N/A) A brand-new American underdog steps back into the ring to settle an old score as well as continue the legacy of a beloved franchise with all the sweat, blood, and tears that he can spare...and we should welcome him like a champion! The Rocky series, even in its weakest moments, has always managed to get my blood pumping with some spectacular boxing action, a cast of misfits and average joes you can’t help but root for, and the endless charisma of its leads. This new series starring the son of Rocky’s oldest opponent aims to be no exception to that trend! It looks to be an epic match in the making and I sincerely hope this is another winner which has just as much heart as it does muscle!

CAPITAL LIFESTYLES FALL 2018
Greetings once again fellow film fans! This year has definitely had its ups and downs in terms of film. Highly anticipated projects yielded some disappointing results, while others expected to bomb hard surprisingly exceeded expectations, and some just kind of came and went without much impact. Everyone expects all the Oscar and Golden Globe hopefuls to be released around the holidays, but this year, we’ll see several big-budget blockbusters making their way into the theaters! Here are a few selections you should keep an eye out for!
Some exciting stuff is on the way,
SO HERE WE GO! Aquaman (PG-13)
It’s obvious by this point that Marvel is the undisputed king when it comes to delivering quality and quantity when it comes to superheroes, but DC Comics is not going to stop trying, and their next big attempt at extending their universe will be with Aquaman! I know that this is a character that has become the butt of many jokes in geek culture, regretfully so in my opinion, but people often forget just how awesome a character Aquaman is, and I sincerely hope that this one gets it right as he desperately needs to earn his rightful place alongside Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that this delivers an epic undersea adventure with action and heart to spare!
Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse (PG-13)
Another studio that’s had its share of blunders with superheroes in the past attempts to do something a bit different this time, with an animated adaptation of the Edge of Spider-verse story features different versions of everyone’s favorite web-head from various alternate dimensions! With the origin of Marvel’s most iconic adolescent hero done many, MANY times in both liveaction and animated form, I’d say it’s due time to get creative, and man does this particular story arc have a ton of potential. I’m staying cautious as Sony doesn’t exactly have the best track-record, but just like with Aquaman, I’m keeping my fingers crossed.
Mortal Engines (N/A)
A rather curious and seemingly ambitious fantasy/action vehicle produced by the man who delivered the awe and majesty of Lord of the Rings. The idea of a future where humanity has converted major world cities into gigantic motorized vehicles amongst an endless desert populated by rogues, bandits, and corrupt authority figures is a rather strange one. But, is nonetheless intriguing to me! Any movie that takes outlandish concepts and manages to make it work is definitely admirable and while I can’t say I know what to expect with this, I am hoping for a pleasant surprise! I just hope it works like Lord of the Rings and isn’t another... well, Jupiter Ascending.

Anna and the Apocalypse (R)
Last, but most certainly not least, a Christmasthemed independent musical comedy...set during the ever-popular zombie apocalypse! Oh yes, you heard that right people, and just from looking at the trailer I can tell that it looks like an absolute blast for people like me who love humor mixed with horror! Christmas already has a ton of snowmen and elves around, so if you ask me its high time we threw some zombies in there. If the idea of La La Land meets Shaun of the Dead looks like a lot of fun to you, then chances are this will be right up your alley!

This 7,200 square-foot iconic home at the Lake of the Ozarks sits on the bluff in Blackhawk Estates. When Melinda Christensen found the home, which dates to 1991, it was neglected and in need of a lot of love. She and her family worked tirelessly to restore it to its former glory, and following an 18-month renovation, it is now complete. Luxurious in the grandest sense of the word, the home has vast rooms with high ceilings, tall windows, art deco design details, and beautiful doors and trim. The only thing that can beat the views in this property are its very interesting interiors. Everything here is large -- from the dimensions of the rooms to the windows.
Despite the evident grandeur, the homeowners have banned formality to create a liveable, contemporary home. Melinda created a sophisticated interior, yet it’s not too serious. She wanted something that was a bit relaxed. To achieve that result, she used sumptuous materials, striking furnishings, original detailing, and added modern touches, such as the largely black and grey palette. She recognized the impact on the space of the original dramatic curved glass block wall that defines the living room and stairway leading from the main level to the downstairs. By keeping this original design element, she set her sights on honoring as much of the original home as possible. She trusted her design instincts and knew what was best for the home.

On surveying this calm, elegant main living area, you are struck by the balanced interplay of black, white and grey shades and by the subtle touches of luxury. You are welcomed by the soothing views of the lake you can only get from being this high on the bluffs. You immediately realize how special this home is. Composed with a rhythmic approach to colors and space, this lake home is part design showroom; part family retreat. The smallest detail has been carefully considered, right down to the symmetrical pairing of objects and furniture. Just a few steps down, the expansive living room with a barrel vault ceiling and floor-to-ceiling windows leaves you breathless. They replaced old railings with a new more modern design. Its style is more appropriate for the art deco style. The original entertainment center cabinet panels are one of many focal points in the living room. She chose to keep the original finish on the doors, as well as on the curved book case. Carefully considering what to keep and what to change takes a skilled eye and a restrained touch. She improved on the functionality by adding distinctive pulls. It’s just one of many small details, but when you consider the sum of so many custom touches, they make a big design impact. Whether they’re home alone, or a gathering of friends and family spending time in this room, it’s a special experience. There’s an intimate spot to sit by the fireplace and ample room for relaxing on the lush upholstered furnishings to watch tv, all while remaining close to the inviting kitchen. 102 |

was brought to life in this classic home. A graphic print rug perfectly anchors the round dining table, crystals accent the drum shade chandelier, the graceful curves on the upholstered chairs are a perfect choice and a black glass cabinet adds a reflective quality. The choice
of a round table allows traffic to flow easily through the dining room to the living room on one side and the kitchen on the other. The mix of modern elements with transitional touches cultivates a timeless look perfect for the Lake. And, just look at that view!

EXPERIENCE.
Using the existing good bones of the kitchen, Melinda banished the diner design and replaced it with a striking combination of materials. The high gloss finish on the cabinetry embodies the Hollywood style in the rest of the home. She chose to keep the black granite on the island and surrounded it with sparkling new quartz counters everywhere else. The backsplash has a true WOW factor. She chose a diamond shaped marble tile accented by crystals. In the evening when all of the under counter lighting is on, the room shimmers with light. The uncluttered kitchen is the epitome of chic. The distinctive accent details layer elements from art deco, Hollywood glam and New York sophistication. Tufted leather stools line the lighted glass block bar. For casual meals, the banquette offers ample seating and the high-top table and acrylic stools are a seamless design choice. Living at the lake is a true experience and being able to enjoy a panoramic view from the large window-well what could be better?

In one of three master bedrooms, she integrated both feminine and masculine touches. The modern furnishings show off feminine curves while the wood grain gives a masculine aesthetic. The luxurious bedding beckons you to sink right in and enjoy a good night’s rest. Well-chosen artwork and accent pieces pair beautifully with the restful color palette. The original arched doors were preserved and enhance the art deco feel. The ensuite bath features ample counter space and a beautiful walk-in shower. She added a touch of glamour with the beautiful lighting and cabinet hardware.
PLAN. DESIGN. BUILD.
Each master takes on an individual character. The dark blue accent wall is the perfect focal point for the distinctive furnishings. Hollywood touches are injected into the design with everything from the oval night stands to the luxe bedding and the restored plantation shutters. They maintained this original detail by changing out the hardware right down to the hinges. No detail was overlooked.

In their master suite, she created a cocoon like feel by wrapping the room in a dark grey color. The furnishings are dripping with detail from the bed’s Greek key design and upholstered elements with nail head features and the bench at the foot of the bed with Lucite legs, this room is shear luxe. In this ensuite, Melinda made sure that she gave a nod to the past while infusing present design trends. The original architecture of the home is still recognized because she saved original elements from the past and found ways to give them a current feel.

On the lower level, you get a ‘rat pack’ vibe. From the moody lighting of the glass block to the totally luxe furniture choices, Melinda created a vacation-style home with spaces that feel designforward and inviting. She worked to create a space that sets the mood for kicking back and enjoying lake time by choosing sultry furnishings
and a dreamy palette layered with pops of color. Simple neutral grey tones leave plenty of opportunity to add pops of color. The original curved fireplace also deserves attention. The skillful masonry details are impeccable. The original stone was redone with paint, so it fits in with the new color scheme.

Every floor was redone with beautiful porcelain tile. The circular staircase was completely redone. They added patterned concrete tile as an accent border on one of the decks. For the furnishings, style, durability and comfort were major considerations. They invested in superior quality furnishings that will stand up to the variety of weather patterns they experience at the lake, and it can easily be maintained. The dense foam cushions were custom upholstered with a wide stripped fabric which complements the black and white awnings. The outdoor experience designed into the original structure of this home is unrivaled. It is perfectly unique and there is nothing that even comes close to this iconic style at the Lake. The construction quality and craftsmanship revealed itself to them as they renovated every bit of the outdoor structure. She shares the vacation home with her family and friends as often as possible. When they bought the house, they were drawn to strike a balance between formality and relaxation, as they intended to use their home for family time and to decompress. Her solutions were a sensitive renovation that contrasts light, bright communal spaces with moodier private zones.
They wanted to honor the homes original architectural details. The renovation marries a respect for the original deco features of the property with a love of pushing the boundaries of design. From the first time they saw the home, they knew it deserved to be brought back from years of neglect. Melinda had extensive architectural and design experience and skillfully took on the largest complete renovation of her career. Paying respect to the original bones of the home, they invested the time and budget necessary to get it right. After all, this special iconic home deserves it! 122 |
