KEEPING HISTORY ALIVE

When I drive down the streets of Jefferson City, I can’t help but find myself rubbernecking at what I see. The beauty of the architecture and noticeable history are something that make this city unique. Jefferson City has 44 properties and districts listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This distinction came to be because of the efforts of countless residents to preserve its history. Historic preservation is an effort that unless continued by every consecutive generation, is futile. Jefferson City has one Local Historic District, also known as the School Street Historic District, which is recognized for its black history. Once known as “The Foot,” this 28-parcel lot grew from the 1860s as a vibrant community with schools, grocery stores, beauty shops, dry cleaners, community pool and filling stations. In 1871, Lincoln University built the first permanent building of its current campus. The black community expanded around the The Foot, which continued to serve blacks during a time of segregation. However, the majority of the homes and businesses were claimed in the 1960s due to a federal urban renewal program.

The district is a collection of mostly intact late 19th and early 20th century single family residences and duplexes located on West Main Street along the southern bluff overlooking the Missouri River. The homes consist of 4 different architectural styles: American Folk Victorian, Bungalow, American Foursquare and Picturesque Revival styles. Conservation districts also have rules in place that protect mature trees from demolition. The second conservation district is more well known, as this stretch has uninterrupted views of the Capitol Building. Capitol Avenue Conservation Overlay District encompasses 107 parcels and stretches over 32 acres from Adams Street to Chestnut Street. Jane Beetem, Historic City of Jefferson board member reflects, “After many years of neglect, primarily by a small group of property owners, the city partnered with the Housing Authority to address the blighted neighborhood.” They had a consultant conduct a blight study which said the area was “blighted.” Public input sessions were held. The Jefferson City Housing Authority requested improvements from the blighted homes’ owners, and a number of them have already made those improvements to remove the blighted designation from their property. The remaining blighted homes are intended to be sold by the Jefferson City Housing Authority to rehabbers for improvements. Property owners and rehabbers must adhere to strict design requirements: Exterior walls must be built from brick or stone. Roofs must have a pitch between 15 and 45 degrees. All buildings must be between 2 and 2.5 stories and there must also be three architectural features on the front façade. These are just a few of the requirements of any new construction and rehab projects that are located in the district. These design requirements may seem like a lot for one homeowner, but when the entire district abides, the result is stunning cohesive display that can only be achieved with full participation.

© Cole County Historical Society

Today, the School Street Historic District is officially established and encompasses 27 buildings from East Dunklin to Miller Street. The designation was obtained after receiving signatures from 75% of the property owners in the proposed district. In signing the statement, property owners agree to abide by design guidelines that will help preserve the original characteristics of the area. Along with the City of Jefferson, groups such as Friends of Lafayette Street and The Historic Foot District are working to bring economic development to the area.

Unlike the Historic District, there are areas that are worthy of preservation but lack sufficient historical, architectural or cultural significance to qualify as historic areas. The Lower Conservation District was created by the neighborhood who had just faced the demolition approval of the Sam Cook Mansion and were further facing the demolition of a 1930's English Revival home to make way for an apartment complex. Founder of the district, Laura Ward explains, “Our intent was to protect the architectural character of the neighborhood by creating a district which would require all exterior renovations and additions of existing structures not to detract from its original historic character.”

There are 98 locations in Jefferson City that have received this honorary designation, most recently the Deetz Home and Brandenburger Drug Store on High Street and the Collett Home on Elmerine Avenue. Each year, the Historic Preservation Commission recognizes a property’s historical significance and contribution to the community. Past award recipients have included not only freestanding monuments but also educational institutions, retail stores, houses of worship, governmental properties and residences. Many volunteers have sought out these designations in order to preserve history for future generations. Historic preservation

MISSOURI’S 6 STATE CAPITOLS

The first seat of state government and capitol of Missouri was located in St. Louis in the Mansion House (on Third and Vine Street) in 1821.

The second capitol of Missouri was relocated in the Missouri Hotel (Main and Morgan Street) in St. Charles.

10

is an ongoing effort that requires participation from the community as a whole. Jefferson City’s history dates back to its founding in 1820. As we look forward to our bicentennial celebration in 2021, we can continue to commemorate the rich history and privilege we have to live in this great community.

BRIDGE TO BUSINESS | 2020

The third capitol was temporarily located at 208216 South Main Street in St. Charles from 1821 to 1826. During this time, Missouri’s first legislators searched for an undeveloped tract of land located in the center of the state, overlooking the Missouri River to become the Missouri’s permanent capital. This temporary capitol was provided by the citizens of St. Charles free of charge and furnished in exchange for the honor of being the temporary capital.

The fourth capitol of Missouri was built in Jefferson City from 18231826 at a price of almost $19,000. The building was located where the presentday Governor’s mansion is and the building measured 40 feet by 60 feet. It was destroyed by a fire in 1837.

Missouri’s fifth state capitol was already being constructed in Jefferson City in 1837 when the fourth capitol was destroyed. Construction was completed in 1840 for roughly $350,000. This building was also destroyed by fire on February 5, 1911 when a bolt of lightning struck the dome.

The sixth (and current) state capitol building was built from 1913-1917 and stands in the same location as the previous capitol, covering nearly 3 acres at a length of 437 feet and a width of 200 feet. The original budget was $3 million, but due to miscalculations on revenue projects, over $4.2 million was collected for the project. The extra funds were used to construct the high caliber sculptures and artwork seen throughout the capitol today.

CAPITOL “Historic buildings are a part of us. They embody our identity and give us a shared sense of community.” — Anne Green, Executive Director, Historic City of Jefferson Capitol Avenue is sprawling with history, and a few years ago, you could appreciate the history by walking down the sidewalks, gazing at the mature trees, expansive front porches and hear neighbors bustling along. Today, we have to dig a little deeper to “feel the history.”

"The historic buildings in Jefferson City were severely damaged by the May 2019 tornado," said Green. "However, despite the destruction, the voice of historic preservation is louder now in our community than it ever has been. Individuals have noticed the damage and the loss over the past year and are now taking a stand to say 'Historic preservation matters to Jefferson City.' "Historic preservation has transitioned from being an end to itself (saving old buildings in order to save old buildings) to instead, focusing on the broader good of our community—revitalizing main street, creating jobs, serving as an incubator for small businesses, providing affordable and unique housing, increasing historic tourism, etc.”

THE ENTREPRENURIAL PIPELINE They say starting a business is as easy as 1, 2, 3. But what are those steps exactly? We asked Lauren Carter, the Executive Director of Lincoln University’s Small Business Development Center that question, and here is what she had to say. I have a few tips of advice for anyone who wants to start their own business. 1) KNOW WHY YOU ARE STARTING A BUSINESS. Understanding the “why” behind your business helps you get through the hard times. Entrepreneurs must devote a lot of time, energy, and money into growing their business. They must love what they do and have a deep passion for why they are doing it. 2) HAVE A PLAN. Business plans are roadmaps entrepreneurs use to make their business idea a success and also to achieve their short- and longterm goals. Next, educate yourself on different funding options. A lot of traditional lenders may not loan to new businesses with no history or businesses breaking into a new industry. The reality is, many entrepreneurs may be turned down for traditional bank loans due to the riskiness of their business or industry, lack of credit worthiness, or lack of personal investment. When this happens, entrepreneurs need to have a financial fall back plan and the dedication to keep trying to obtain funding.

3) SEEK HELP.

14

BRIDGE TO BUSINESS | 2020

Entrepreneurs do not need to be an expert in every area of business. There is a lot of no to low cost help for business owners. Utilize these organizations because they are filled with knowledge and resources that could make the journey of starting your own business much easier. Build a team of people that can assist in the areas you need help in. If you are not a bookkeeper, then hire one. If you are not an attorney, then hire one. Having a good team of people is key to having a successful business.

Campus Coworking Space, a dedicated coworking office space, was lifted off the ground after they pitched their business idea at the Jefferson City Area Chamber of Commerce’s Pitch It & Win It Competition where they won $5,000 of start up capital. Shortly after the business opened its doors, it was struck by a devastating tornado. They didn’t let that hold them down and recently re-opened Campus Coworking Space at a new location.

Millennials now make up around 35% of the workforce (Source: Open Access Government). This group is generally characterized as those born from 1981 to 1996. As with every generation, they have their own expectations of their employers. Employers are asking: what exactly are those expectations? We are here to tell you… we found out! We asked a couple of our local millennial business owners, how their workplaces have (and will) evolve to cater to the changing workforce demographic. Here is what they had to say: HAVE YOU DONE ANYTHING IN YOUR BUSINESS THAT CATERS TO MILLENNIALS? Here at the agency we offer Flexible Time Off. As long as there is ample notice and there are other team members at the office to take care of our customers they are allowed to take off. One of the reasons I got into this career is because of the flexibility that it offers and being able to spend time in the community or with my family. I personally don’t think I should be the only one that gets to take advantage of that. – Doug Otto, Owner, American Family Insurance – Douglas Otto Agency

SPEAKING FROM YOUR OWN EXPERIENCE, WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT IN THE WORKPLACE FOR MILLENNIALS? We encourage strong values in participation. We want our employees to take pride in what they are doing. We want to give them some creative freedom AND take ownership of the position and the “product” they are making. I think these ideas are important when catering to millennials — and everyone in my opinion — to maintain interest in a job… even if it’s just serving burgers and fries! It’s a simple exchange in business that can make both sides of the transaction extremely happy after it is completed… or watching it be completed when you serve food! – Quinten Rice, Owner, Q Entertainment; Co-Owner, JQ’s on High; Co-Owner, Avenue HQ; Partner, Stitt-Barony HOW DO MILLENNIALS’ NEEDS DIFFER FROM OTHER GENERATIONS’ NEEDS? The way that they communicate. I know many people think that we are just on our phone scrolling social media, but in reality, that is how we communicate and conduct business. Individuals are now able to utilize their social network and collaborate with others like no other time in history. – Doug Otto

Biography Channel’s My Ghost Story TLC’s Who Do You Think You Are? History Channel’s American Pickers What do these films have in common? They all had episodes shot in Jefferson City. Independent feature films have also shot here including Paranormal America, Haunting of Cellblock 11, Darkness Reigns, and many others. These film crews were all attracted to Jefferson City with the opportunity to shoot at the city’s film “hotspot,” the legendary decommissioned Missouri State Penitentiary. Other projects have been shot at the Missouri State Capitol and the Missouri River pedestrian walkway. However, there is one thing that Missouri is missing that most filmmakers deem as a “deal-breaker.” Since November of 2013, there has not been a tax credit incentive for filmmakers in Missouri. Brittany Mormann, Communications and Film Manager at the Jefferson City CVB says, “While there have been many Missouri-based films produced, many of them are shot elsewhere due to the tax incentives in other states. There is a lot of interest from companies looking to film in Missouri, but they oftentimes consider other filming locations since we do not have a tax credit.” At this time, there are many advocates who are trying to reinstate the expired tax incentive to help bring projects 18

The Jefferson City Convention and Visitor’s Bureau (CVB), along with the Statewide Missouri Film Industry and National Missouri Film Office (MFO) meet annually in Los Angeles each year in an effort to connect the Missouri Film industry with TV and film professionals living in Los Angeles and New York. The Jefferson City CVB pulls out all the stops to attract producers despite the lack of a tax credit incentive. If a producer is interested in filming in Jefferson City, the CVB helps crews seamlessly carry out the project by facilitating contact between the production company and their locations of choice, partners, services and other local resources that would be of support to their project. For example, the CVB works with various hotels and businesses to help find a suitable base camp and production office and secure lodging at affordable prices. The CVB helps the film crews navigate the city and county channels, obtaining permits as needed. They will also work with local authorities to set up street closings and help with traffic flow. Central Missouri has everything you need, whether it’s lighting and sound, car rentals or catering. With its mix of urban and rural scenery, many historical landmarks, and charming downtown area, Jefferson City is an attractive location for filming. FIGHTING During the COVID-19 pandemic, everyone struggled in some form or fashion. Chamber member businesses stepped up to the challenge and adapted to meet the needs of our community. We are proud of all of our members and wanted to showcase some of their stories. With the demand growing for protective glass to keep essential employees safe during the pandemic, Brady’s Jefferson City’s Glass Company made this product their number one priority. They installed Lexan shields in countless Jefferson City (and surrounding) businesses such as SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital, Cole County offices and the Missouri State National Guard to name a few. These shields provide a clear view of clients and customers without direct contact. They also allow for pass-through openings to enable business transactions as usual. The Lexan shields offer the safety and security required, with minimal disruption to daily business activities. Thank you to Brady’s for helping so many businesses remain operational during the pandemic!

Love2Nourish is no stranger to helping in times of need. During the aftermath of the 2019 tornado, they wasted no time in serving the families and workers in the area. The COVID-19 pandemic was no different. They quickly began offering curbside and free delivery in Jefferson City, Columbia, Holts Summit and other surrounding areas. They also began offering basic necessity items for sale such as bleach, toilet paper, milk, eggs, bacon, and more in addition to their normal menu items. They even delivered some of their famous “amazeballs” to physicians at SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital to show their appreciation.

Barvino has really shown their strength throughout this crisis. As the pandemic unfolded, they began selling discounted bottled wine, growlers of beer, and food for pickup only. Shortly after, in an effort to cater to those who were uncomfortable leaving their homes, they expanded their services to include delivery. They utilized social media to its fullest potential throughout the pandemic and at one time garnered interest in their wines with a virtual wine-tasting event. As a small business themselves, Barvino understood how much they had to do to keep their employees paid and maintain some sense of normalcy. They partnered with O'Donoghue's Steaks and Seafood and for every Barvino receipt presented, customers received a 10% discount off of their order at O’Donoghue’s Steaks and Seafood.

THE VIRUS

At the Chamber, we pivoted our support of membership by using Zoom meetings to continue to provide useful and timely information, to continue promoting a hopeful and positive business climate during this difficult time. We promoted our “Let’s stick together” sticky note campaign in the newspaper, on social media and even mailed sticky notes with this positive message to our members. We disseminated information as it came in regarding grant programs, new legislation, and local and federal directives. In addition, surveys were conducted to track local employment, we promoted a “shop local” message to consumers and created the JCMO Chamber Marketplace where members could advertise promotions and changes to operations and hours. The Marketplace is still providing benefits to our members today.

As a large company, Walmart understood that their policy changes would impact a large number of people and took that responsibility to heart. They knew the most “at risk” in the population would need essential groceries and prescriptions from their stores. They dedicated shopping hours from 6-7 a.m. exclusively to seniors, just after the store had been sterilized, to ease their worries. Alternatively, they offered curbside pickup for prescriptions, a service they had not offered before. A home delivery service was launched at the beginning of the pandemic as well to keep customers from having to come into the store. If customers did venture into the store, they were greeted with sterilized carts, masked and gloved employees and signs reminding them to practice social distancing. Walmart also streamlined the hiring process so that applicants could apply and begin work on the same day.

We are so very proud of how the community has supported one another and taken precautions to operate safely. Unfortunately, we can’t mention every business’s efforts and good deeds. It is no surprise that our community businesses stepped up and stayed strong as they weathered the unknown. There was great cooperation with the local, state and national stay-at-home orders. Many people supported small and large businesses by continuing to shop local and prop up businesses with donations and gift card purchases. We are thankful to support such a wonderful community that truly cares about each other.

HEALTHCARE EVOLUTION The healthcare world is changing right before our eyes. That change is evident, even right here in Jefferson City! Dr.

© Oftentimes people know about “holistic,” “complementary,” “natural” and “alternative” medicine, but they don’t know what “integrative medicine” is. Integrative medicine requires traditional allopathic medical training that combines not only holistic and alternative medicine tools but also medical knowledge from many other medical trainings some of which are chiropractic, Ayruvedic, and Eastern medicine. And all of this is evidence-based medicine.

It is so fulfilling to see patients take control of their health by getting the tools they need to be in control of their health and wellness and to help their other doctors have successful prevention, resolution or stabilization of their high blood pressure, anxiety, diabetes, infertility, reflux, dementia, etc. Why did you choose integrative medicine over traditional medicine? After being in practice for 20 years, I was like a lot of physicians that noticed that patients are not satisfied with their health. They leave our offices with the same unspoken BRIDGEJC.COM

worries: “I don’t want to get Alzheimer’s Disease like Mom.” “I am so afraid to get cancer like my brother.” “I wish I didn’t have to take my anxiety pill.” They may have been given a good checkup or been told that they don’t have cancer, but they don’t leave with any tools to help themselves be a whole person. They usually feel frustrated because another medication has been prescribed, or they feel rushed and aren’t given any practical tools to help themselves keep from getting sick again.

DIRECT PRIMARY CARE

After my second year in a row of having debilitating arthritis, two hospital visits for pneumonia and developing an irregular heart rhythm, I went to see Dr. Chris Link. (Since my cardiologist and primary care doctors found nothing serious with me, I thought that Dr. Link would be a good next step to see why at the age of 45, I felt so very old). He discovered that I had severe allergies to gluten and kidney beans and was deficient in several vitamins. Within one week, I felt 100% better. In fact, after the next visit, I didn’t even need to see him anymore. A couple of months later, my husband told me that Dr. Link had graduated from the University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine (now known as the “Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine”) and that we could apply to get in. We both applied, were accepted and graduated together with the spring Class of 2019.

What is direct primary care?

Is integrative medicine a growing medical model in the U.S? It is definitely growing in the U.S. Since the inception of the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine in 2004, it has grown into a huge international community of skillfully trained integrative physicians and allied health professionals. Our founder, Dr. Andrew Weil has a hope is that in the future: ALL medicine will be “integrative.”

Dr. Jeff Teeter, DO Titan Health: Direct Primary Care 3121 Emerald Ln., Ste. 800, Jefferson City (573) 614-7022 Dr. Jeff Teeter is the first physician in Jefferson City to bring direct primary care to the community.

Direct primary care, or DPC, is an affordable healthcare option where patients pay their physician directly, without the need to send claims to insurance providers. This is in stark contrast to traditional fee-for-service practices that hope insurance companies will reimburse for the services physicians provide to patients. It also takes out the guesswork for the patient, questioning if insurance will cover something or “allow” them to receive the care they deserve. With DPC, you simply pay a monthly membership fee that provides you with direct access to your physician, and easily accessible care the moment you need it, not 6 months down the road. What made you want to begin your own direct primary care clinic? After a year of general practice in Florida and two years of residency-based practice through Capital Region, I began to see just how broken our healthcare system is, for all parties involved. I grew tired of the ever-escalating documentation requirements and ever-growing need to see more and more patients in a day for the exact same compensation. This is not only unfair to the physician. It isn't fair to the patient who only gets to see their doctor for 5 to 10 minutes, because they have to go on to see 30 other patients in order to keep the practice alive. That isn't quality health care! That doesn't give you enough time to breathe, let alone weigh in and think about your patient’s disease process. I first heard about direct primary care while in medical school and honestly didn't give it a second thought. At that point, I was still naive to the true workload and paperwork required to run an effective medical practice. I thought: “Insurance is just the way it's done. Why buck the system?” As I learned the reality of the situation and became fed up with it, I started doing more research about DPC. During this research, I ran across a DPC practice run by Dr. Josh Umbehr called Atlas MD. I decided to reach out to him with my questions and he invited me to visit his practice in Wichita for a day. I was blown away by the quality of care and the relaxed nature between him and his patients. At that point, I was hooked and started navigating the legal and start up requirements to begin my own DPC practice! Thus, was born Titan Health: Direct Primary Care!

How fast is the CBD trend growing trend in the U.S.? CBD is a fast-growing industry, mostly due to the fact that people are wanting a more natural form of pain relief. We consistently receive doctor referrals and even have doctors as customers. Is direct primary care a growing medical model in the U.S.? Yes. As you well know, people are getting fed up with rising health care costs, unchecked inflation on medication prices, and insurance companies that are charging more and more while covering less and less. Because of this, not only are patients looking for alternative ways to obtain quality medical care, doctors are looking for alternative ways to practice medicine. For these reasons, there has been a surge of DPC practices opening around the United States and patients are flocking to their doors. As this model gains popularity in new areas, such as Jefferson City, more and more individuals see the value of a DPC practice and seek it out instead of traditional clinics or hospital-based practices.

CBD Cheryl Pingleton American Shaman 3702 W. Truman Blvd., Ste. 200, Jefferson City (573) 616-2524 In 2018, Congress legalized hemp, which also includes products like CBD. American Shaman is among one of the first CBD retailers to open in Jefferson City. Why did you decide to start your own CBD business? Our family discovered CBD while dealing with our own health problems. My dad, Charlie Pingleton, wanted to get a Harley and ride to every state, but his wrists and hands hurt. He eventually came across CBD and he has had amazing results with it. I also found relief from my fibromyalgia through CBD.

What does the future of CBD look like? We hope that CBD can become regulated so people can know exactly the ingredients in what they're taking. American Shaman is 3rd party tested, which further verifies its status as being a safe and high-quality product. We have customers that had been buying what they thought was “CBD” on Amazon and learned from us that Amazon’s policy prohibits the sale of CBD, so what they had actually received was likely hemp oil. So, CBD regulation is very important to us. What ailments does CBD treat? We have customers that come in looking for CBD for all different needs like PTSD, ADHD, high blood pressure, neuropathy, arthritis, anxiety, migraines and tobacco addiction. We try to provide a large selection of products that can fit into anyone’s budget and lifestyle. We sell tinctures, lotions, and even bath bombs. We carry products appropriate for people who are just discovering CBD and also for the long-time user. We're also excited to start carrying products made not only from CBN but also CBG, the mother cannabinoid. At American Shaman, we use nanotechnology, which makes the CBD very small so your body can absorb it better and you won't need to take as much.

TAKING 2020 IN STRIDE In this past year, Jefferson City has been through a lot! From tornadoes, flooding, and hail, to COVID-19, there’s not much more we can check off our list. Despite our troubles, we have accomplished some truly incredible things in a very short amount of time. In addition to helping restore our community, the Chamber has been diligently working with our partners to complete some mammoth projects that will make an impact for generations to come.

PORT The Heartland Port project has been in the works for quite a few years. In 2018, the Heartland Port Authority of Central Missouri (the port’s governing body) was formed. The Heartland Port Authority Board of Commissioners is as follows: Roger Fischer

Rick Mihalevich

Kris Scheperle

Hank Stratman

Jim Jordan

Calvin Broughton

Thomas Woods

Ann Pardalos

Jeff Naught

On May 15, 2020, the General Assembly voted 145-3 in favor of transferring ownership of 116 acres (between the Ike Skelton Training Center and the Algoa Correctional facility) from the state to the Heartland Port Authority. Recently, the Port Authority received a $183,700 grant for a market study and business development plan. After 6 months of in-depth research by Iowa-based Decision Innovation Solutions, it was determined that the operation of a port in Central Missouri would be economical to potential users in a 24-county area. As another part of the study, it was determined that the port should operate under a “landlord port model concept,” which would mean the entity that operates the port would pay a concession fee to the Port Authority. The next step for the Heartland Port is to utilize recently awarded grant funds for conceptual design and environmental work such as NEPA reviews, archaeological and historical preservations studies, and preliminary engineering design. In order to be successful, federal and state funding sources will need to be leveraged alongside private dollars to make the port viable. BRIDGEJC.COM

The project accomplishes two of Jefferson City’s biggest goals: 1) the construction of a much-needed conference center and 2) to fulfill the MSP Master plan by developing the land to showcase not only the scenic river views but the historic penitentiary itself.

The Chesterfield Hotels/Arcturis proposal includes the construction of a Hilton Tapestry hotel, and conference center in phase 1. Later phases include the construction of an ice arena, five-story parking garage, museum, office building, single family townhomes, retail and more!

The City Council made a historic vote on June 1, 2020 to begin working with a developer to transform the 32 acres of land parked behind the historic Missouri State Penitentiary (MSP). After the vote to select for the Chesterfield Hotels/Arcturis team of developers passed 6- 4, Mayor Carrie Tergin’s smile said it all... After almost a decade of planning and hard work, the project finally began forming into something tangible.

The island will be a passive recreational area with trails allowing visitors to hike through the wooded area and experience the riparian environment along the banks of the Missouri River. Later phases of the project hope to connect the Bridge with the newly redeveloped Missouri State Penitentiary area.

DeLong, along with the philanthropists before her, recognized the beauty in the assets of Jefferson City, the Capitol, the Missouri State Penitentiary and the Missouri River. However, there currently is not any infrastructure connecting the three. The 12-foot wide pedestrian and bicycle bridge would extend from the Missouri State Capitol Complex, over the railroad to

Growing up, I volunteered with several United Way partner agencies, and I was the United Way campaign coordinator for Modern Business Systems, my employer after college. When I heard about the position with the United Way, I felt called to apply—it would be an amazing opportunity to combine my passion to serve with my profession.

It’s hard to image the amount of stress you endured after the tornado. How did you manage to keep a positive attitude during all this? On May 23, I felt this overwhelming sadness about what had happened to our beautiful city, the lives that had been devastated and how the United Way needed to respond. My father-in-law’s home was destroyed by the storm, and being worried about him and what he had gone through was also consuming my thoughts. It was heartbreaking. But I knew, as did my United Way team, that it was critical that we model courage, perseverance, resiliency and hope. We wanted to show the community that we believed it was going to be okay—we believed our community would work together to recover and rebuild. So heartbreaking turned into heartwarming in the days and weeks to follow, as the phone started ringing and people were coming in the door of the United Way at a pace that we had never seen… so much so that Central Bank sent five team members to our aid to help manage the phones, disaster survivor requests for help and volunteer and donation requests for the first several weeks. There was an amazing sense of calm amidst the chaos that could accurately describe our office, because we felt the love of our community. We always knew there were people and businesses we could call who would provide the help needed… and if we made a call and that person couldn’t help, they would help us find the person or business that could help. It is something I will never forget. It was caring, compassion and selflessness at its best. You obviously have the heart of a servant, what inspired you to want to serve our community in this way? My parents, Don and Ruth Ann Schnieders. They never really talked about service, they just modeled it by leading committees, raising their hand to volunteer when they saw a need, and selflessly giving of their time, talent and treasure. They instilled this passion and understanding in me and my six siblings to step forward and serve because it’s the right thing to do. BRIDGEJC.COM

We have only heard positive things about the program and wanted to share a few of our member’s comments to further encourage others to take advantage of this huge cost-savings. 601 E. Smith St. California, MO 65018 (573) 464-4361

Dr. Derrijk, how did you react when you won the Small Business of the Year Award? Humbled and beyond grateful. With neither Dr. Hilary nor I being Jefferson City natives, we wanted to give back to a community that welcomed us with open arms. So, to be recognized as being leaders in the community is a huge honor for us. However, we also know that we would never have accomplished this achievement without the support of our Hollon Family Chiropractic family and team.

Tell us your story! How and why did you get into chiropractic care? How did you meet each other in order to start the business later on together? We both knew we wanted to help people from an early age, but neither of us knew exactly how we wanted to do that. Eventually, both of us enrolled to Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa where we met each other and began interning at the Troxell Intern Program. Our friendship quickly grew and by the time that we graduated, we already had plans to open our own office together in the heart of Missouri. Dr. Hilary, how are things going at the newest practice in California, MO? Great! After nearly 6 months, we completed the full renovation of our California location in January. However, we have been serving patients in the California office since mid-November. We are growing rapidly, and excited to bring quality chiropractic care to another community. The residents of California have been extremely warm and welcoming, and it has been a lot of fun serving the residents of California and the surrounding communities. In a few short years, you opened two practices. Are there plans for a third practice in the future? We are always planning for the future of Hollon Family Chiropractic. Currently, we have plans to open a third office, but are still in the initial stages of development.

After working just short of 2 years at C&S you won this prestigious award, so what is the secret to being an exceptional employee? I don’t know that there’s a “secret formula” or anything…I just do what I was taught by my parents and what tons of other people do every day…I try to do my best. What do you do when you’re not being an exceptional employee? I grew up (the youngest of 6) on a farm in Osage County and have lived all my adult life in Jefferson City. My husband, Bruce, and I have a grown daughter, Mackenzie, who lives in St. Louis. I also have a “Little Sister” through Big Brothers Big Sisters that I have been matched with for over 6 years now. In my spare time, I like hanging out with family & friends, shopping, jogging/walking outdoors, and going to (rock) concerts. At last count, I think I’ve seen over 60 different (rock) bands and I’m looking forward to adding to that list!
