The Dream of it.
The Waiting.
Home comes from the The homeowners had been dreaming about their forever home since they were married 17 years ago. Over the years, they patiently compiled a list of their “must haves”. Then one night they were having dinner with their friends Scott and Bobbie Schaeperkoetter, and the conversation turned to building. The conversation wasn’t just about the structure, but more about how they would live in the home. They wanted a place to connect and have purposeful conversations, so their children would have wonderful memories...a place where they could deepen their connections to family and friends and keep their lives on track. Their home is beautiful and relaxing, and at the same time lives efficiently. To them it’s not about taking care of the house, but the people in it. They found a beautiful building site that reminded them of farmland. Their home overlooks a natural setting bordered by mature trees. Much consideration went into the materials used to give the exterior a fresh appeal while paying tribute to the farmhouse facade. While most modern farmhouses are clad in vertical board and batten, the exterior is an artful mix of brick colors, enhanced by details executed by a skilled mason. The shake and horizontal siding add charm and character.

The spacious and welcoming living room remains uncluttered and bright with a feel of simplified elegance. The color palette is light and subdued with just a whisper of blue gray on the walls. Underfoot, hand-scraped hickory unifies the home with it's warm tone. The huge bank of windows offers a beautiful view and fills the room with natural light. Tremendous consideration went into the artwork to give the home a personalized feel. The fireplace takes center stage. It is the perfect complement to the farmhouse style with the blend of painted brick, simple design and shiplap that soars to the ceiling.

A huge piece of custom art is a sweet surprise... a beautiful moment that sets the tone for the rest of the home. Each work of art they have chosen bears a story, which makes the images they see everyday meaningful.

The space also includes a cross buck dining table base with hammered stainless steel top. The casual blend of seating echoes her modern farmhouse style. Nearby French doors give access to the four seasons room with wall-to-wall windows that keep the view unobstructed. The four seasons room provides a comforting space that overlooks the back property with views of the yard and woods beyond. The EZEBreeze vinyl windows are designed to take an impact if a stray ball happens to hit them. The bead board is an appropriate choice of finish material on the walls and the cathedral ceiling. They enjoy the space as much as possible as weather permits. It's a cozy place to watch the sunrise and while away the day.

The owners' suite is a serene, private area. The homeowner built their bed during construction. The comfortable furnishings lend to the calming feel amongst the soothing colors of the space. The original art was done by a friend. The ensuite is perhaps the most modern room of the house with its spa-like feel and luxurious amenities.

urniture Showrooms by JC Mattress Factory is celebrating their 90th Anniversary. A longtime fixture in Jefferson City, they have grown and responded to the demand for quality furniture and comfortable bedding since 1927. Kay and Dave Mehmert have grown up in the business and learned from hands-on experience. Kay’s parents, Ken and Peggy Clark, purchased the mattress factory from Lester Mueller in 1969. “It started out as a mattress factory, and Ken began adding a few furniture pieces at a time,” said Dave. “I began my career here, working for Ken. Through hands-on experience, he taught me the business and the rest is history.” Dave and Kay took over the reins in 1998, and changed the experience of shopping for furnishings in mid-Missouri. ear after year, they responded to the demand of their customers. A new mattress factory was built in 1988, the new store in 1990, the store at the Lake in 2002 and a huge warehouse in 2005. In addition, they continually refresh the design of the store, adding galleries, expanding furniture lines and bringing on services to make the shopping experience better for their customers. “From the time a customer comes in the door until the delivery team leaves, we want it to be the best experience possible,” said Kay. “Our team of designers and furniture professionals understand the difference between quality furnishings that will last opposed to throw away furnishings. We sit down and take the time to design special order pieces for our customers, or help them choose from our large in-stock selection. Our huge warehouse makes it possible for us to have a variety of choices, so you can take your selections home the same day, or they can be delivered.”
while keeping the best of the past. Many companies stopped manufacturing two-sided mattresses. JC Mattress Factory never did. “It’s a matter of their customers having the best quality in a mattress. They get a good night’s sleep for years to come, and we’ve got a satisfied customer - and that helps us rest easy,” says Dave.

hey’ve become known for mattresses, and it’s easy to understand why. They’ve been manufacturing and selling mattresses since 1927. You've heard the saying, 'they don't make them like they used to'? Well, luckily, they still do. As other mattress companies have cut corners and changed manufacturing methods, JC Mattress Factory has stayed the course, implementing the best of new technology and materials in their bedding,
nterior design services within a furniture showroom is a natural fit for their customers. It’s an ideal working relationship. Customers come in with their vision of what they are looking for, and we help them achieve it. There is so much to navigate, we are able to make recommendations and narrow down their choices, so they choose the best scale, texture and design for their home. “We will work with people in the showroom or make home visits to make sure our customers are satisfied. This is a service we provide for anyone buying furniture, regardless of budget. We offer a wide range of furniture because we want to offer something for everyone,” adds Kay.
T
he demand for quality custom furnishings is on the rise. “We know what's on trend and what's trending forward. We bring the latest to the showrooms to meet the client's wants and needs and create a home that's fresh in design,” says Kay. Recently they have expanded their furniture lines to include Kincaid solid wood furniture and custom upholstery, handmade solid wood Amish Furniture and the Tempurpedic line of mattresses. The furniture in the showroom is properly supported by other selections. From artwork to accessories, you’ll experience designs to integrate and complement your personal style.

The Aiello’s bath is like walking into a comfortable spa. The large closet keeps the couple's wardrobes from commingling. Because this house is full on contrasts, she chose to lighten and brighten the shower space with the same white floor tile that looks like Carrera marble. And she added a centerpiece detail--a floor to ceiling panel featuring glass mosaic deco tile. The tile choice adds tons of shading and texture creating the feeling of walking on a marble pathway. After living in the home 6 months, Steve dug in to finish the lower level by himself. You enter the downstairs through an obscured glass door. She wanted this to be a design statement on the main level…it has the function, but it’s not so obvious. The lower level’s ceilings echo the same crown molding upstairs. This adds a cohesive architectural design element that runs throughout the home. The walk out basement takes advantage of the view with windows lining the full expanse of the exterior wall. Being right on the Osage is a big plus, they get to enjoy being on the river and watching it roll by. They love having fun outdoors and on a cool evening, the fire pit is a welcome addition. The beautiful entrance sets the tone for the design of the house: clean, light and inviting. Immediately you are in the center of the action. hen David and Julie Erwin decided to build their new home, they told Kent Bentlage they wanted a kitchen with a bar that had room for everyone. Julie had found a picture of what she had in mind, and Kent made it happen. They had some plans drawn and built the house around the bar. She smiled when she told us they wanted to downsize, but by the time they planned everything out, having enough space for everyone became the priority. This exceptional home sits on 15 acres surrounded by enough land to give them privacy and plenty of room to have fun!
She believes the key to home design is to pick things you love that also make you happy. She knew what she wanted but was open to new ideas. She has built her style by filling their home with things she thinks are beautiful and help them live the way they want to live.

No smart host wants to be out of the loop while friends sip, laugh or grab a snack. And what better way to persuade people to make themselves at home than to offer a sprawling bar, comfy chairs and a kitchen open to all? This dream kitchen is centered around the huge semi-circular bar clad in the same stone as the living room fireplace. Three pieces of granite were used for the bar tops and two were used for the counters. The large bar features a more than generous workspace, and the unique curved design provides ample seating for everyone who shows up to the party. Wood flooring complements the rich wood cabinetry. 96 |

The huge, gorgeous kitchen features a sleek backsplash with a stunning beveled glass tile feature. The island offers contrast with white cabinets and dark granite. The unique pendant lights add the bling she has waited so long for. She spent her career in the military, and now that she’s retired, she is ready to discard the camo and add some sparkle. These unexpected touches add interest and depth to the large open space.

Her fresh and comfortable style led her choices in furnishings. The large cozy sectional is a great gathering place. It’s so natural for everyone to gather around the handsome stone fireplace. They can relax and stay as long as they want. The heart of the home has a classic look that she jazzed up with details like extra tall passage way openings and twelve-foot ceilings. The ceilings are amazing and offer architectural details that captures everyone’s attention, adding a ‘WOW’ factor to the expansive room.

“The style is just us. It’s all about what we love and live with. We use everything. I don’t like having things packed away. I want to use it.” The casual breakfast area features a large custom-built bar height table topped with a huge piece of granite. David had seen the piece of granite at Martellaro’s and said, “that’s our table!” Since no ordinary structure would be able to carry the weight, they had a custom steel base built by IEI. The chairs offer style and dining comfort with upholstered seats. There is plenty of room to gather round and share a good meal and laughter!

When slumber calls, the master bedroom is absolute perfection. Everything about this space will have you ready to move in. They carried the architectural ceiling treatments into the bedroom. It makes a stunning statement especially at night when the accent lighting illuminates the interior of the circle. The calming neutral color adds a feminine touch to the room. It is truly a place to unwind!
102 |
They are lucky to have a private setting where they can leave the windows and patio door open without window treatments to enjoy the view of the outdoors. A sleigh bed was chosen with platform storage drawers, and the matching wood nightstands on either side feature pretty lamps with some added bling. The bed is dressed in elegant, matelasse bedding layered with large elegant pillows. A comfortable accent chair completes the stylish furniture arrangement. CAPITAL LIFESTYLES ď‚š SUMMER 2017
The neutral palette continues into the master bath. It is a dream in sophisticated design elements. Oversized tiles have a modern light and dark stria pattern. An accent tile strip with metallic details was applied vertically to highlight the design of the large walk-in shower.
She took every opportunity to add a bit more bling! Spacious his and hers vanities are separated by a storage tower which offers just the right amount of privacy. Each vanity is illuminated with different, but complimentary crystal light fixtures. A dream custom closet sits behind the door off the bathroom. The clothes storage is to die for, but her private nook in the back gives her plenty of room to get ready. A large mirror, vanity table and more clothes storage makes this an unexpected gem, ‌and the crystal chandelier is the jewelry to create the sparkle she loves. WWW.CAPITALLIFESTYLES.NET

CAPITAL LIFESTYLES ď‚š SUMMER 2017
Together with some of their good friends, they took the plunge and installed a large L-shaped pool themselves. They plan to enjoy their pool as much as possible and share the fun with their friends. The pool is already a welcome relief from the heat and is the center of their back-yard oasis. They’ve thought of everything. When it’s time for a nap, the double lounger offers a convenient shade canopy. A chimenea provides warmth, and it’s easy to spend evenings whiling away the hours watching the flames give way to glowing embers. The stainless-steel grill and outdoor kitchen with a beverage center is a magnet for friends and family. If you’re hungry, it’s no fault but your own! There’s always plenty of good food on hand! Just like inside, comfortable seating for dining and lounging is arranged to complete this relaxing outdoor space. Sunday is Funday, and family and friends come to hang out and come together for good times!
See you by the pool!

T
he summer movie season, a time which promises to bring the best in big-budget Hollywood entertainment to your hometown, and 2017’s continuing swath of franchise-building sequels, reboots, and remakes appears to be no exception to that trend. Among the fast-paced and often frantic routine of everyday life, the chance to finally go out and see that latest blockbuster you’ve simply been dying to see is something that many of us savor to have with our friends, families, or simply at our own leisure.
This summer has already offered a variety of entertainment selections, from the hilarious and action-packed Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to the earnest and empowering Wonder Woman, and in the next few months, even more long-awaited material awaits as this “summer of sequels” rolls on with ever increasing momentum! Thus, the collective critic is here to give you what I recommend to be some of the most worthwhile features to grace the silver screen in these next few months!
Despicable Me 3 (PG):
Families and young children will no doubt be chomping at the bit to see this sequel featuring a horde of everyone’s favorite gibberish-speaking yellow dudes and the continued antics of ex-super villain Gru and his three adopted daughters. Will most likely turn away anyone annoyed by the Minion craze, but will draw in crowds of the little ones nonetheless! Shows begin June 30th.
Spider-Man Homecoming (NA): Your friendly neighborhood webslinger crawls right back onto the big screen, as well as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, home of heroes like Iron Man, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America and Doctor Strange just to name a few! With this iconic character finally arriving to Disney’s much beloved and highly successful franchise, this is sure to be one that fans and movie-goers alike can’t possible possibly resist. Shows begin July 7th. 112 |
CAPITAL LIFESTYLES SUMMER 2017
War for the Planet of the Apes (NA): The third installment in the prequel series to the highly iconic sci-fi franchise roars back into theaters in what promises to be a concluding chapter unlike nothing we’ve see from the series thus far. With the first two installment of this highly entertaining and thought-provoking series being so successful with critics and audiences alike, everyone will be itching to see where it all ends, and I can’t wait! Shows begin July 14th. Dunkirk (PG-13): The genius director behind The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, and Interstellar brings to us what promises to be a captivating World War II drama about brave souls fighting back against one of the most evil regimes from a truly dark period in our history. Fans of Christopher Nolan’s flair for grounded realism, intriguing commentary, and intelligent dialogue will no doubt have plenty to look forward to, as well as the Oscar voters. Shows begin July 21st.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (PG-13):
Adventurous sci-fi is always a staple of summer entertainment, and the director behind cult favorites like Lucy and The Fifth Element seems to be delivering some over-the-top thrills with this adaptation of a beloved graphic novel. I confess I know little to nothing about the source material that this is based on, but with a highly ambitious look, as well as creative set design and character models, I’m hoping for a space adventure that pleases the heart as well as the eyes. Shows begin July 21st.
Atomic Blonde (R): Fist fights, gunfire, and a beautiful, as well as talented lead
actress in the starring role? What else could the action junkie in all of us possibly ask for!? Charlize Theron is sure to deliver in what promises to be an adrenaline-fueled roller coaster ride with flashing neon style and enough gorgeous stunts to satisfy anyone looking for a good thrill, but please, leave the kids at home for this one! Shows begin July 28th.

Open concept homes make a statement with their easy flow from one living space to the next. These homeowners used transitional design to blend traditional and modern styles throughout the home. The modern white sectional sofa is laid-back and easy and counter balances the large traditional bank of custom cabinetry that houses the TV and fireplace. They did a pop of color with draperies and a pretty accent chair.

The large kitchen has an air of sophistication, but it still has personality. The white cabinetry surrounds the perimeter, while the large wood island takes center stage. It's all about balancing the materials... painted and stained wood cabinetry; raised panel solid wood doors; display cabinets inset with glass; solid granite and pretty backsplash. The casual dining space adjacent to the kitchen has a homey feel. The striped area rug, drapery fabrics and soft upholstered seats on the chairs help to soften all of the wood.
