Visit Summerfield Estates and get ready to build your home! In designing a subdivision, land selection is key. We start by considering the lay of the land and the desirable location to make just the right neighborhood for families to enjoy. We focus on details in order to minimize land disturbance by using the natural characteristics of the land to ensure we are eco-friendly. Then we consider the needs of the community, the financial feasibility of the development as well as the affordability issues for the homebuyer for the development to come together in the final product. Ken Thoenen Homes, Inc. is proud to introduce Summerfield Estates as a new neighborhood for our Jefferson City families.

A LETTER FROM THE

Partner, Imagemark

SANDRA FORBIS

PUBLISHERS

Welcome to our 25th Anniversary Fall issue of Capital Lifestyles Magazine!

DONNA VIESSMAN

As we assembled the features for this issue, we are struck by the imagination and creativity of our homeowners and the craftsmanship of the builders and tradesmen who build and remodel beautiful homes in our capital city area!

Digital Marketing Manager

CHRIS DOWNING

Partner, Imagemark

It would be easy to take the process for granted because of the amount of exposure new builds and renovations are receiving in the media, both on television and online. Creating a new living environment is a process plagued by so many questions…floorplans, room sizes, flow, exterior materials, maintenance, heating and cooling options, energy efficiency, plumbing fixtures, lighting plans, flooring, colors, cabinetry, fads versus classic styles…there is so much to consider. We know how you feel, and we hope that looking through this issue of Capital Lifestyles magazine will help make some of these decisions easier!

All our feature stories are about homeowners who found a true rapport with their team. Each outcome is unique, but what they all have in common is they have a completed project that is the realization of a dream they have thought about and planned for years.

MEET THE TEAM

Teams of builders and designers were credited more than once by the homeowners featured in these pages for their craftsmanship, communication, professionalism, knowledge, insight and hard work. Complex challenges can occur during any building project and having the right professional by your side is essential to achieving your desired outcome.

FALL 2019

One day while driving down the dusty country roads to check on their cattle, a couple happened upon a house for sale, and they decided to take a chance. The property had an old 1960s ranch house that they had planned to remodel. However, everyone that they consulted all agreed: this home was just in too poor of condition for a remodel. With all the work that would be needed to bring everything up to code, it would be better to just start over.

Paulette Kreter of Paulette Designs worked closely with the couple to determine exactly what they wanted from the property. With a blank slate, the shouse they originally thought of building turned into a more “traditional home which would ultimately be a better investment and better fit their vision of a home that would play host to many family gatherings. The couple in collaboration with Paulette drew up the plans for their new home, and Mike Luebbering took on the task of making it a reality.

The homeowners really wanted this home to draw the outside inward. The front of the house features three sets of French doors, which perfectly align with identical sets of French doors on the backside of the house. This allows light to flow completely through the house. From outside, the home looks like a two-story. Once you walk into the space, you realize that the entire second story above much of the open concept living area has been left exposed. The openness is accented by Anderson windows and white oak support beams, drawing your eye upwards to the ceiling, across the space, and furthering that light and expansive feeling.

Inside is a truly rustic, industrial retreat. Old meets new. Traditional meets modern. Natural meets man-made. Built on a slab foundation, the first floor of the home features

engineered hardwood floors that have the feeling of real wood but was easily installed directly over the concrete. Metal accents contrast against the light woods and cream-colored walls. All the

windows and doors have been framed with black trim, echoing the metal strapping on the beams. An exposed duct running across the ceiling even further enhances the industrial style.

With the homeowners’ strong vision for their space, Rachel and Tina of JC Mattress and Furniture Showrooms helped them finish off the design and find the perfect furnishings, lighting and area rugs. In the living room area, they have made great use of symmetry in the layout. A gas fireplace, surrounded by grey tile and topped with a wooden mantle that matches the flooring, stands as the focal point. Two wood and metallic bookcases flank it on either side. In front of the fireplace, the space is softened with plush grey sofas featuring nailhead accent trim, each with a matching table framing their back to offer the final impact on the symmetrical design. A pair of grey armchairs sit at the head of the arrangement. A light-colored, geometric patterned rug anchors the furniture arrangement with a warm tufted leather ottoman at its center.

Beside the living space, a large, light wood farmhouse style table awaits the next family gathering. Overhead, an eye-catching chandelier made of metal with round exposed bulbs takes on a sputnik-inspired silhouette for an artful appearance. Ready for the next dinner party, comfortable seating for ten surrounds the table. The upholstered dining chairs complement the sofa design with nailhead trim and grey textiles. The room then flows right into the kitchen, which is kept just as light and airy as the rest of the space by using light grey cabinetry with gleaming white quartz countertops. Sitting at the large island are distressed wood barstools that feature deconstructed backs that expose a light toffee burlap while the rest of the chair is covered

The master bedroom sits just off the main living area and continues many of its design aesthetics. The barn wood master bed matches the dark wood nightstands topped with industrial metal pipe table lamps. The crisp white bedding proclaims who truly runs this home—the family dog—a theme that is echoed in the corner armchair, covered in a grey, illustrated dog print fabric. Industrial elements reappear in the two-tone metal dresser drawers with riveted details.

The master bath houses one of the treasures honoring the original property. During the demolition of the existing structures, the homeowners had to tear down a machine shed. Columbia craftsman Matt Mehmert was able to reclaim the best of this lumber and utilize it to build the new construction’s bathroom vanities. Each vanity is unique in its construction. The master vanity features lightcolored solid oak boards, planed to showcase the wood’s original saw marks. As you run your hand across the wood, you can CAPITALLIFESTYLES.NET

feel the texture, but such care in craftsmanship has been taken that you’d never get a splinter. Iron handles, quartz counters and double sinks top off this one-of-akind showstopper. The rest of the master bath features neutral tones. A vertically stacked large grey tile with a stripe of diamond mosaic surrounds the shower. Multiple showerheads complete this well-appointed master retreat. A mix of metallic finishes gives the room that industrial contrast.

In the guest bathroom, you’ll spot another unique reclaimed wood vanity, this one containing dark accents of Brazilian cherry. Meanwhile, tucked to the side of the main living area is a staircase that leads to a lofted area above the kitchen. Lined with a horizontal metal railing that furthers the industrial style, it opens to an additional seating area that can also convert to a sleeper. Utilizing a trunk as the coffee table, layered with pillows and textiles, this area has a cozy, softer style. From this height, you can look down over the entire living area below, giving you a bird’s eye view of all the activities that may be happening in the house. From this level, the second-story windows are aligned perfectly so that you can see quite a distance outside to the horizon. Obscured during the spring and summer, once the trees lose their leaves, the homeowners shared that from this vantage point you can see all the way to the river bottoms.

Back downstairs, if you follow the French doors to the back of the property, the homeowners extended the concrete pad in order to create an additional living space and an outdoor kitchen. The entire outdoor space is screened in to more comfortably enjoy the outdoors. Accented with rough sawn cedar posts and Smart

siding, like the front of the home, this continues the couple’s goals of creating a home where the inside and outside flow together. Overhead is pine shiplap that has been treated with a white glaze and sleek, modern black ceiling fans that tie in with the black window and door trim. The

seating area features an electric fireplace furniture piece. They’ve kept the furnishings outside light and natural, while the outdoor kitchen is grey-clad with stainless steel drawers and grill. Since it needed to hold up to the elements, they utilized a dark granite for the outdoor countertop.

During the building process, it can certainly be hard to determine the exact size and scale of everything. At one point, the homeowners stood on the concrete slab that would become their home and voiced their concerns that perhaps it wasn’t big enough. To this, their builder Mike Luebbering reassured them it was. They are glad that they trusted him. Now, from the loft, looking down over their expansive three-bedroom, threebath, 2,300 square foot home, they can rest easy knowing they made the right decisions.

Gardens to Go helped create a low maintenance landscape that would soften the hardscape of the planting beds.

There's no better way to unwind at the end of a long day than relaxing in a beautiful, tranquil garden. Outdoor spaces are becoming more important to our wellbeing, and homeowners and craftsmen are spending more time and effort creating environments where they can escape the 8 to 5 to renew and reconnect with what’s truly important… family. This is exactly what inspired our homeowners’ vision of their backyard transformation. Working within the framework of a fairly typical backyard space with a grass-covered lawn and an existing deck that provided shade to the patio below, the homeowners dreamed of creating a magical landscape where one space seamlessly transitions to another. To revitalize their landscape, these homeowners began the search for the right craftsmen to help them turn their vision into

reality. Their search lead them to Nathan Voss. The homeowners had seen one of Nathan’s projects featured in Capital Lifestyles magazine, and they knew he would be able to help them. Their home originally had a deck and small covered patio on the lower level. While these were nice, their vision included a more updated, comprehensive plan that would transform the entire 56

footprint of the backyard and increase their usable space. One of their initial concerns was to ensure that the structure was solid and engineered to hold the weight of the extensive project to come. They were able to blend the best of structure with an amazing design. From the main level of the home, you step out onto a wonderful deck with an unexpected shade structure. Made of aluminum, a custom laser cut pattern casts playful shadows that reflect the leaf design onto the surfaces below. The homeowners wanted protection from the heat while enjoying the seating area, and this one-of-a-kind structure fulfills the practical need for it. When visiting the space for the first time, you are distracted by its unique design and barely notice how hot it could be without it overhead. The care in planning the new patio is readily apparent. Underfoot is stamped concrete decking, a continuation of the textures from the stairs. Surrounding the space are horizontal metal railings and hefty columns provide the support structure. An outdoor heater stands to extend the outdoor season into the cooler days ahead. This homeowner clearly has an eye for detail and design. On the new patio, furnishings were chosen for the soft curves and comfortable cushions that welcome you to have a seat and stay awhile. Though far removed from the foliage below, the numerous potted plants and greenery connect the space to its natural surroundings, in what could otherwise have felt like a very man-made space. For the lower landscape design, the homeowners enlisted the help of Mick Hartzler to put together just the right mix of plants. He is very knowledgeable about what 58

varieties would work well in the space. The Homeowners were mindful of the level of maintenance that would be involved as everything matures, and Mick was able to bring in natural elements that truly bring life to this landscaping project. They also introduced beautiful containers overflowing with color, a large fountain, and a beautiful fire pit. A stone path leads through the various spaces they created to discover small details tucked in along the way as you explore this classic garden. The natural elements are an ever-evolving discovery of the simple pleasures mother nature provides when you take the time to enjoy its wonder. Nathan created an additional stamped concrete patio, tying this space in with the rest. Curved stone and concrete bench seating frame the patio and provide overflow seating closer to the central gas fire pit. Continuing the continuity of the design, the concrete has a unique shadowy blue hue similar to the deep blue of a pond. Nearby, the homeowners have dedicated an area for their bird feeder aviary. New lighting and added accent lighting highlight the many subtle design features. A skilled restraint was used so as not to overpower the landscape, but to honor the classic design.

They wanted to reuse their existing herringbone paver patio and blend it into their new landscape. Mick and Nathan did an amazing job of working with some of the materials that were already there. the additional beam structure was covered by a new product that looks similar to plaster. Many gifted, hardworking craftsmen lent their skill and talent to create a special place for these homeowners to enjoy with their family. The homeowners placed their trust in Nathan to oversee it all. Because he was always onsite, working alongside his crew, they knew their vision was in good hands. Though this summer’s weather threw them some challenges, they were not in any rush and in the end, the finished project turned out better than they could have ever imagined. The new surroundings they created are a perfect reflection of the homeowners who imagined what could be. They infused the project with their own relaxed perspective to create a timeless and simplistic organic design.

The Lears had been thinking and planning about what they would need in their home, not only now but what they would need as their children grew up and eventually moved out of their home. They wanted to make sure their home is welcoming for their children and future grandchildren, serving their family well throughout the many stages of their lives. Their forever home also needed to be able to transition to when it is just the two of them. Considering how the couple would live in this spacious home after their kids were grown became a major design priority. With this in mind, they designed a spacious floorplan that clusters the spaces they would use most in a centralized plan. The adult spaces are the hub of the home, and the kid’s rooms occupy the spaces on the perimeter and in the upstairs bonus space. Tina had found a kitchen layout in a magazine several years ago that she fell in love with. She cut it out and kept it. She knew that this was her kitchen. That clipping became the jumping-off point for their home blueprint. Another source of inspiration was her grandparents’ home. The center of many family memories, Tina wanted to honor its farmhouse style in her own family home. From here, Tina started to design the home.

The Houzz website was a great place to find photos of ideas that were similar to her vision and show them to the builder. Their collaboration went much more smoothly because she was able to communicate with photos and not just a description. He loved that because it helped him and his crew to get it right the first time. For the exterior, Brian and Tina were inspired by their love of Colorado architecture. However, they wanted to put their stamp on the finished design. Instead of accenting the siding with brick, they chose a beautiful rustic stone to give a unique blend of traditional farm style. They then tied the exterior and interior design together by using the same stone—purposely cut smaller—to bring scale to the fireplace, stove hood, and kid’s nook. In the living room, the beams were custom designed to enhance the cathedral ceiling, framing the large window and the view out the back deck. Even the exterior beams on the front porch and covered deck echo the size and scale of the interior beams. Only a true craftsman could translate this vision into a visually striking architectural feature that will only get better as time goes on. Tina wanted their home to reflect their personal taste and individuality… especially in the kitchen. She wasn’t following the trends; she was looking for unique and custom. The kitchen cabinetry boasts a custom mix stain that came from her vision for grey mixed with a brown tone. The result is a beautiful finish that perfectly complements the whitebased granite counters. The Lears spent a lot of time considering how they use their kitchen and the necessities they wanted to be built into the cabinet plan.

The large island is the perfect place for after school snacks. It is the ideal combination of efficiency and beauty! A built-in niche houses the paper towels and keeps the countertops uncluttered. Cookbooks, mostly her grandmother’s, have found a home in the shelving built into the island.

Lining the back wall, a beautiful arabesque tile backsplash provides an understated but elegant backdrop for the other elements to pop. The stove hood stands as the focal element above the gas stove, and the stone complements the granite. She even splurged on the pot filler, completing her dream kitchen! Throughout the home, they used prefinished hardwoods, but in keeping with Tina’s vision, it’s not just one type of wood. They chose a medium oak and dark hickory, mixing the two woods throughout the home for a timeless custom feel.

The dining room has ample space for family dinners. A long farmhouse table flanked on one side with a bench provides flexible seating, no matter the size of the crowd. Overhead, the center point of the design is a large scale light fixture. The orb pendant’s crisscrossing metal bands give the room an industrial charm that is echoed in the rustic windmill blades on the wall. It also ties in well with the smaller scaled pendants above the kitchen island and in the entryway.

When this homeowner was building his new home, he knew they wanted a showstopping backyard pool to be a part of the project. Having thoroughly done his homework, he came to Vaughan Pools to make their strong design vision become a reality. Since both the home and pool were under construction at the same time, the team was able to easily coordinate with all the builders and tradesmen. Ensuring that everything from the plumbing, electrical, concrete and landscaping work were all in place and in the proper order for the final pool project helped make the entire build run more efficiently.

The 52-foot pool is extra-long to allow for multiple features and entertainment areas. The long stretch of the open pool area is perfect for family and guests to swim and play games. Then, in about the middle of the pool, the floor steps up to just below the water’s surface, to create a lounging deck. This wide, shallow area of the pool allows you to sit, converse, relax, and cool off—without venturing all the way into the water.

On the far end of the pool, closest to the clubhouse is an entertainment area with swim up granite bar stools and table. The dark, marbled granite has a movement that complements the ripples of the water’s surface. Facing the large TV over the clubhouse fireplace, this in-pool seating area completes a backyard

resort setting. Food and drinks can be served to guests while never missing a minute of the big game or getting out of the swimming pool. Aside from the entertainment possibilities, this pool is packed with little details that both wow and make maintenance a breeze.

Backyard Resort Underwater, the pool has a smooth granite pebble finish, with diamond detailing around the ledges. The light granite contrasts with a dark blue tile lining the edge. The entire pool is surrounded by pavers which were laid over concrete. They flow seamlessly into the rest of the home’s backyard design. Built into the decking, laminar jets with LEDs produce clear or lighted arcs of water that silently enter the pool. A choice of festive color shows enables the homeowner to create a breathtaking nighttime light display.

Rising from the Ashes It was a crisp fall day when this family experienced a tragedy that they never expected: their country home of nearly 20 years had caught fire. Completely engulfed in flames by the time they arrived, firefighters could only keep the fire from spreading. The couple was completely devastated. In a matter of hours, their home, its contents and everything that they owned were a total loss.

Afterward, the couple was trying to decide where and how to begin rebuilding. She was looking for inspiration to lead them in designing and planning their new home. Inspiration came from a home she drove past every day. She loved the style of the home and had often admired it. One day, they decided to stop in and ask the homeowners for a tour. They graciously gave the couple a

tour, shared valuable information about their own experience building and directed them to their builder, Kent Bentlage. This was exactly the jumping-off point that the overwhelmed couple was searching for. When the couple met with Kent, (Bentlage Homes), he directed the couple to Paulette Kreter of Paulette Designs to begin creating the layout. CAPITALLIFESTYLES.NET

93

Paulette worked through their needs, listened to what they loved about their previous home and what they needed their new home to have. It was a very emotional process, but Paulette was very patient, listening to their ideas and 94

making changes as they worked through the decisions. They chose to keep a similar footprint for their new house as the previous one, keeping things that mattered to them, such as a master bedroom on the south side of the house,

while maintaining the view they loved, and a central kitchen and living room. But then they took the opportunity to simplify the layout, keeping all the main living spaces on the same level and planning for wider doors and high ceilings.

You get that large sense of scale right from the moment of walking through the front doors. With dark wooden beams accenting the high gabled ceiling, the space welcomes you into the open concept living area. Avid readers and collectors of books, the focal point of the living area is a large fieldstone fireplace flanked by built-in library shelves, complete with a sliding ladder. The deep tones make one want to curl up for the evening in one of the leather armchairs with a good book in front of the fire.

Rough sawn hardwood floors run underfoot, connecting the living and kitchen space. The breakfast bar repeats the same fireplace fieldstone and is topped with a dark, Italian granite. This would be the showstopper of the room if it weren’t for the glistening, custom-designed copper vent hood above the six-burner gas range. Matching copper accents and a pot filler complete the look. The rest of the granite countertops and tile backsplash are light in color, creating a nice contrast and letting the darker elements really pop. The tall cabinets reach all the way to the ceiling, again emphasizing the height of the rooms. Conveniently behind a set of otherwise unassuming cabinets, the couple has hidden a full butler’s pantry! CAPITALLIFESTYLES.NET

Still rebuilding from losing everything, they tried to bring in personal touches and memories where they could. Originally from Maine, she incorporated the sea in her choice of artwork. Their otherwise traditional style is also accented with a few fun surprises 100

such as industrial styled pendant lighting, and the original 1880s saloon doors leading to a half bath. Making interior design decisions was so much easier with the help of Gayla at Mid-City Lumber. “She knew how depressed and upset I was at our first meeting because I

was so lost and didn’t know where to even start! Gayla was very patient and gave me ideas and listened to us about what we liked! She was great to work with,” said the homeowner.

Their property is like a canvas that is framed by the large picture windows, giving the homeowners picturesque views of the countryside from every room. And if the large open concept living isn’t enough to entertain their large family, a screened-in patio provides extra space to enjoy the beautiful rural scenery. The patio and decking wrap around the house and provide a connection to the outdoors from multiple rooms in the home, including the master bedroom. They have created their own personal sanctuary to sip coffee while watching the sunrise over the field in the mornings. Even inside the bedroom, light streams in from the multiple windows that line the perimeter of the home. The spacious master suite features a tray ceiling which adds to the expansive space.

Greetings once again fellow movie lovers! I make it no secret that the Halloween season is by far my favorite time of year, so in addition to the costumes, candy, and spooky good times October has to offer, I thought it would be a good idea to spotlight some of my most highly anticipated horror and genre features that came our way throughout this glorious month! 2019 has overall been a fantastic and interesting year for horror flicks, so of course October and early November was set to see a hefty slate of films fighting for our admiration as well as our ticket money! Lesser known and mainstream features alike look promising, so let’s take a look at what we got!

Joker (R)

We of course love to cheer on our favorite superheroes, but everyone also loves a memorable and menacing bad guy! The origin story of Gotham City’s Clown Prince of Crime will finally be explored in this unforgivingly brutal, and far from easy to watch, yarn depicting a beaten and broken man blasting his way through the chaotic and crazy world he calls home. I admit I was a bit hesitant to check this out as I wasn’t sure a villain could hold his own movie by himself, but judging by the early reviews, DC will manage to prove me wrong! If you want to see a mix of Taxi Driver and Killing Joke done correctly, then this is definitely a picture you shouldn’t miss!

Zombieland: Double Tap (R)

It’s been ten years since the likable and hilarious horror comedy Zombieland graced the big screen, and even though this sequel was late to the party, I’m more than happy it finally decided to arrive! With the gang back together to bust some zombie heads while spewing hilarious one-liners, this is obviously something that’s here to just have a ton of fun with and look good while doing it! I’ll be placing my bets on the first film being better, but a second trip can still be worth taking 106

CAPITAL LIFESTYLES

FALL 2019

despite that, and even though it probably didn’t need to happen, I’m glad it did! If you have fond memories of the first film and want something similar in spirit, then this hopefully won’t disappoint.

The Addams Family (PG)

On the more family-friendly side of things, 2019 is also seeing a new interpretation of everyone’s favorite creepy, kookie, mysterious and spooky family of frights! Sure, I would’ve liked to have seen another live-action rendition of these characters and I’m not a huge fan of the animation style here, but the soul of the source material still seems to be pulling through. I can definitely say that it will be one of the better animated efforts we’ve had thus far this year. While I don’t see it being better than the show and films which came before it, I still hope it passes the torch suitably enough to the next generation and delivers some fun and laughs along the way. Overall, it will probably be a piece of sweet Halloween candy, enjoyable to the young and old alike.

The Lighthouse (R)

Director Robert Eggers made us ponder and question ourselves with The Witch. Now, he aims to shake us to our very souls with this Lovecraftian tale of terror that also seems to be beautiful and glorious to behold! With an eerie and foreboding atmosphere, a black and white

presentation reminiscent of the golden age of silent film, and promises of powerhouse performances from Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe, this is sure to make even the most hardened of horror fans shiver in their seats and keep them oddly enchanted at the same time! While most people fear darkness, I personally feel that the dark can have its own unique beauty, and this is a movie that clearly shares that sentiment! Definitely a must see for those who love genuine horror delivered with a master’s touch!

Parasite (R)

Beloved South Korean auteur Bong Joon-ho has once again astounded, provoked, and surprised critics and festival goers in equal measure. This socially aware domestic thriller apparently begins as something familiar, but morphs into something wholly unique! I hesitate to talk too much about the setup to this one as this is something I feel will be best left unspoiled, but I am confident that it will be an experience that is worth seeing if any theaters close to you manage to get it! From previous efforts like The Host, Mother, Snowpiercer, and Okja, the man has always had a firm grasp on his craft, and I can’t wait to see what he has up his sleeves this time around!

BAR SIDE MENU SANDWICHES All Sandwiches served with fries or chips Turkey Club – $8.99 Prime Rib Dip – $11.99 Horseradish sauce served with Au Jus Chicken Philly – $8.99 Sautéed Mushrooms, Onions and Pepper Jack Pork Tenderloin – $8.99 Breaded or Un-Breaded Add a salad to any sandwich or small plate – $2.99

Until next time fellow fright fans, have fun, stay safe, and keep watching scary movies!

SMALL PLATES Grilled Salmon Cakes – $8.99 On Mixed Greens, drizzled with Aioli O’Ds Fish Taco’s – $7.99 2 Corn tortillas with grilled Ponga, Tomatillo Salsa, and Cilantro Sour Cream Shrimp & Grits – $6.99 Creamy and Cheesy Grits Steak and Mushroom Demi – $7.99 Served on Mixed Greens on top of Crusty Bread with Herb Cheese Half Portion Chicken Marsala – $8.99 Served with Garlic Mashed Potatoes

Doctor Sleep (R)

Horror maestro Stephen King has had an amazing couple of years recently, and this longawaited adaptation of his sequel to the more than iconic The Shining hopes to continue that hot streak of spectacular scares! With an extremely talented ensemble cast and the creator of Netflix’s hit series The Haunting of Hill House sitting in the director’s chair, this attempts to both pay homage to a classic while expanding its universe in creative and terrifying ways! Once again, I was initially hesitant to open myself up to the idea of a sequel to such a landmark of horror cinema, but if there’s anyone who can pull this off, it’s Mike Flanagan! King himself has given this guy his blessing in the past, so I’m more than confident that he will hit another home run with this one!

Half Pound Steak Burger – $9.99 Your choice of American, Swiss or Pepper Jack cheese

COCKTAILS Blood Orange Sour – $4 Vodka with Blood Orange Sour Mix Aperol Spritz – $5 Aperol, Champagne and a splash of soda water Moscow Mule – $6 Titos Vodka, Lime Juice & Barritt’s Ginger Beer Raspberry Fizz – $6 Bombay or Hendricks Gin, Raspberry Puree, and soda water Sunset Boulevardier – $6.50 Please enjoy responsibly. 2036068 Elijah Craig Bourbon, Aperol and Sweet Vermouth

MADE SHADE in the

Scott and Teresa Williams had lived in their home for fifteen years, dreaming about what they might do with their back yard. They had a large, empty plot with one issue: most of the day, it sits in the full, hot Missouri sun. Hardly the ideal entertaining hub that they wanted it to become.

The couple talked with many different people, gathering ideas. Enter Nick Haslag. The Williams met Nick at the HBA Home Show, and they really hit it off. He seemed to immediately visualize what they wanted for their space and drew up options for them to consider. The concept they were presented with really 108

spoke to them, and they embarked on the journey to have the outdoor entertaining space they had always wanted.

Now, the space is made up of multiple entertaining areas. Two-tone pavers are used to define the outdoor rooms and create flow from one entertaining space to the next. Darker pavers are used to accent the borders and features making the design more noteworthy. In order for the pavers to hold up over time, sand has been compacted, and the pavers sealed so that they’ll never move.

Instead of gutters, rain chains are a unique feature on the back of the shelter. Water follows the chain down off the roof into a pipe and drain tile takes the water away from the structure. The homeowners enjoy watching how the water follows the chains when it rains, but they’ve discovered an added plus: watching the dew drops as they make their way down the chains in the early morning… it’s a bit mesmerizing and relaxing!

The centerpiece of their retreat is a large, covered outdoor bar, complete with warm cedar beams and a ceiling fan. This covered seating becomes a lifesaver on hot summer days. Built off-site and then installed on location, the concrete countertops have a rough edge adding character which blends with the pavers underfoot. They extended the countertop to accommodate barstools for extra seating. When the Williams couldn’t decide between a fireplace or a fire pit, Nick asked, “why not do both?” So, they did. The wood-burning fireplace with a rough-edged concrete mantel to match the countertops sits just

to the right of the covered bar. Then, the gas firepit occupies the space just a short distance away with room for a crowd to gather 'round. Both make the area perfect for chilly fall evenings, as well as extending their outdoor space earlier in the spring and long into fall. Small details complete the design. To make watering easier, a soaker hose is hidden under the landscaping, so that they only need to hook up a hose when spring hits instead of lugging one from plant-to-plant each time they need water. It is so much easier to just turn on the hose and let it run to water the plants and

CAPITALLIFESTYLES.NET

then return later to turn it off. In the evenings, their well-planned lighting design totally transforms the space. Not only does it enhance the design, but it also highlights the varying elevations. The homeowners were incredibly impressed with the high quality and pride in workmanship of Nick Haslag and his team. At the end of the day, Scott and Teresa now have the beautiful outdoor retreat they have always wanted. It has become a magnet for many gatherings with friends and family!

TRANSITIONS Transitions The family had been living on acreage for years, enjoying the privacy of life in the country, but they came to realize that they no longer had the desire to be the caretakers of their 80-acres of land. They began thinking it would be more convenient and manageable to build a new home closer to town with a smaller amount of acreage. They found just what they were looking for when a 5-acre lot became available, which offered the feeling of seclusion they had become accustomed to

with enough space to have their neighbors close, but not too close.

her husband was sold and ready to move forward with her design plan.

A little older, a little wiser, and able to afford a few more upgrades the second time building, she knew what she wanted in their new home. However, with her bold design plans, she knew that her husband may need some convincing. So, she took him on an HBA Parade of Homes tour to see firsthand current design trends and open his mind to new ideas. In the end, it worked, and

Starting with the home’s exterior, she knew that she wanted this house to have more visual charm than their previous home. The roof line is so important to the curb appeal of any home, and they took every opportunity to add more roof peaks to the finished construction. They maximized architectural interest by blending the natural beauty of stone with brick. CAPITALLIFESTYLES.NET

Brick soldier courses trim out the windows, and they’ve made the most of the design feature the arched windows provide by adding more interest with contrasting stone accents. The arched entry above the front door makes a beautiful entry and

it carries through to welcome you into the interior spaces. Upon entering, the house reveals the open concept living room. A tall stone fireplace leads your eye upward to the tall 12-foot coffered ceilings. The homeowner skillfully

chose a mix of contrasting materials which makes the cohesive design pop: white trim highlights the stained doors, a dark wood fan stands out against the white coffers, and the stone fireplace texture plays nicely against the warm tone of the hardwood flooring.

Opposite the fireplace wall, the room opens to the kitchen. The opening is framed with well-crafted millwork. The beam features pillars at either end. They’ve cleverly executed the design on the beam to create a photo ledge

where the homeowner can display treasured memories of their family. While they had once considered having more closed spaces, they couldn’t be happier with how this open layout works for them.

Helping her husband understand her vision for their kitchen was her most exciting opportunity to realize the final design for their home. She worked hard to help her husband to see her vision. She took every opportunity to bring together function and style to realize her dream kitchen.

The flooring transitions from hardwood in the living room to tile in the kitchen in order to delineate the space. A large, black painted island with beautiful light-colored granite anchors this space. Warm stained cabinetry lines the perimeter walls, and she once again, used contrasting materials in her design. She chose black-toned granite for these countertops. The textured stone backsplash ties into the living room fireplace. Though the ceiling here is lower, it still feels airy as light streams in from the large picture windows. The home also features both an eat-in kitchen area and a formal dining room, giving them flexibility when they entertain.
