Yes, you can achieve real style and personality with a paired back aesthetic. Magazines like Capital Lifestyles which focus completely on home building, remodeling and home design are a good place for inspiration on where to start. We are featuring homes who have successfully transitioned to soothing palettes and curated furnishings. Modern simplicity doesn’t mean that you have to eliminate your favorite paintings or pottery, but you just use restraint when deciding what you choose to surround yourself with, instead of filling your spaces with more and more stuff. Shop more sensibly and invest in quality items that extend the design in order to find peace and balance.
MEET THE TEAM
As life gets busier, many of us have become more mindful how we approach life and how we approach our homes. The challenge of creating a design that is reflective of our lives is not easily achieved. Words like “purge”, “downsize”, and my personal favorite, “simplify” resonates throughout our world. But, how do we bring ourselves to change how we live and remove the pieces we have chosen to make our house our own? Removing the ‘chaos’ that permeates our daily lives is difficult. In this issue, we highlight stunning interiors where homeowners and designers have managed to achieve balance.

CAPITAL LIFESTYLES SUMMER 2019
Joey and Anita Ridenhour’s family grew up in the Belle area and when it was time for them to build their home away from home, they began looking for land. In 2015, they acquired 114 acres and began the task of creating a design unique to their family. They knew they wanted a log home, so they went to Gastineau Log Homes, where Anita worked extensively with TJ to put their concept on paper. Hours of planning and revisions resulted in a beautiful structure which Gastineau would later submit for publication in The Best of Log & Timber Floor Plans magazine. The Ridenhour’s log home was chosen from hundreds of submissions to be published. Their home has its own personal narrative to tell. It’s a story of how construction methods of the past and designs of the present merge to create an almost spiritual result. The dance between wood timbers, stone and steel is apparent as you approach the home. Only an amazing structure such as this can make a powerful connection to this beautiful piece of land in the rural farming community, they both are drawn to. They responded to that sense of community by sourcing local craftsmen whenever possible to create the one-of-a-kind features that are found throughout the home. A series of pillars, posts, beams and soaring gables reach toward the sky, forming the perfect architectural composition. Remarkable structural features are a hallmark of log home construction. Impressive detailing used in the exterior design include geometric window groupings, cut stone steps, stamped concrete, stacked stone pillars and rain chains instead of downspouts. There is even an outdoor shower!

A warm welcome awaits as you enter the home through the custom wood, glass and wrought iron doors. We weren’t sure where to look first. The massive structure & Detail is brimming with wonderful details. Stunning in size and scale, the grand staircase links all three levels of the home. Anita designed the amazing structure. The massive oak beams support the custom railings made by a local craftsman. The railing stands independently from the wood structure. Construction methods unique to log homes require a skilled and experienced craftsman. Gastineau referred Omar Yoder and his sons to the Ridenhour’s to build their home. The Yoder’s have extensive experience building log homes all across the country. They made the trip from Greenbay, Wisconsin many times during the course of construction to build this beautiful home.

Because of the naturally occurring settling of log homes, they need to be adjusted annually for the first five years. Anita designed decorative iron plinths to wrap around the base of each post to hide the screw jacks that are instrumental in keeping the home level and is planning to patent the design. Construction began with the forty plus foot chimney which rises from the foundation through all three levels of the home. The entire home was built around the chimney, and everything settles around it. Symmetry in this grand structure creates a dynamic design and brings together each living space with gently inferred connections and continuity. Each of the mantles and fireplace screens features a different design, yet common materials. These custom elements are reoccurring throughout the home resulting in a soothing aesthetic. The center section of the home is an arrangement of multiple zones which artfully converge in a strategic use of space. Whether dining or gathering, there is plenty of room for everyone to enjoy this beautiful home.
Anita’s love of antiques is apparent. She has an extensive collection that has been curated for years. She prefers to keep things simple and celebrate with items she loves most so the final composition is uncluttered.
LIGHTING…IT COULDN’T HAVE BEEN EXECUTED ANYMORE EFFECTIVELY. Anita searched antiques shops, retail stores and online resources to assemble a striking collection of both vintage and new fixtures to effectively illuminate each room. She found all of the vintage light fixtures in the gathering room from one source. All six fixtures came from a church and only one of them had a broken piece of glass. Their scale and structure fit perfectly within the beams.

Anita’s love of antiques is apparent. She has an extensive collection that has been curated for years. She prefers to keep things simple and celebrate with items she loves most, so the final composition is uncluttered. Who doesn’t look at a beautiful fireplace without being drawn in by the flickering flames and warmth it generates? Fireplaces become the focal point of any room, and they’re not only beautiful, but they are an efficient source of heat. Anita chose large scale seating she custom ordered in a green leather to create a comfortable place to gather around the fireplace. It has become a favorite gathering spot. The strategic addition of texture she has used in the finishes, the furnishings and the fabrics bring a regal look to the space.

CAPITAL LIFESTYLES SUMMER 2019
On the upper level, there is a common loft flanked by bedroom suites. They are intended for their son's and daughter’s families when they choose to stay over. Antique beds inherited from Joey’s grandparents are used in each room. His grandfather was born in one of them. Weathered barnwood from Joey’s grandparents farm is used on the lower level. They also had to source additional wood to complete the design on the other two levels. They chose not to seal any of it because it changed the patina of the wood. They preferred to use it in its natural state. Look closely, you can see the beautiful color variations created by weathering over time.

In the master suite, the layering of pattern, texture and finishes results in a relaxing retreat that is visually simple. The natural beauty of the logs which were enhanced by a grey/green stain sets the stage for their bed.
A cozy chair is a great place to curl up and read a book. She pulled together a collection of materials and finishes which have rich details and texture that coordinate, but don’t match.
The beautiful fireplace features a hand carved mantel from Virginia that was another lucky find. Anita likes to use armoires instead of closets for their clothes storage. They are a perfect choice in this setting. CAPITALLIFESTYLES.NET

A free-standing tub finishes out the well-appointed master bath. Who wouldn’t want to spend some time relaxing and unwinding in this room? The bathrooms were designed with both beauty and easy care in mind. The showers are tiled all the way to the ceilings, and she chose not to use a shower door. Each bathroom features the same design elements to maintain continuity throughout the home.

DOWNSTAIRS IS ALL ABOUT FUN.
The great room is a journey of discovery. Natural stone is used extensively to create an intimate experience. The floors are stained and sealed for easy care. On the bar is a slab of wood that was brought from Wisconsin. Designing and creating a unique space are definitely a gift of Anita’s, but Joey made many of the decisions in this space. The poker table was hand made by the Yoder’s. They also made the barn doors from scraps of leftover wood. Hanging over the bar is a muzzleloader hand made by Joey’s father. The ceilings in the lower level are clad in cedar. The different shades of the wood used throughout the home are keynotes which added depth to the design. It doesn’t appear heavy or overdone. I believe it is because of the collaboration between the homeowners and the skilled craftsmen who assembled everything so perfectly!

WIDE
OPEN SPACES
Vast open concept rooms are extremely popular. So, you’ve designed your home to be open concept; now how do you make it look like the homes on TV? Tall ceilings combined with the absence of walls, certainly gives that AH HA moment, but now how do you define the spaces. Large family rooms need a sense of continuity, which can be created by using similar themes, accent colors and or fabrics to unify the space and bring balance to the design. Decorating a large family room can feel daunting because the lack of walls means you have to get creative in what you use to define the space. Furnishings, accent wall colors or area rugs can create a sense of separation and enhance the flow of how the home is used. Ask yourself how will you use the space? How many people does it need to accommodate and what will they be doing? Is it a casual or more formal space?
46 |
CAPITAL LIFESTYLES ď‚š SUMMER 2019
Furnishings can create obvious zones to create the illusion of separation and make the space purposeful. Comfortable durable upholstered furniture is a popular choice for relaxing in front of the fire or binge watching your favorite shows. Comfort is key! Avoid lining the walls with your furnishings. Instead, pull them into the center of the room to create a conversation area. Use an area rug to ground the space. Then take the opportunity to nestle a favorite chair into a corner to create an intimate reading nook. The popular farmhouse aesthetic is on-trend, blending perfectly with a more clutter-free and simple style. Use fewer pieces, but make sure they make a big impact. For example, something unexpected and unique like an architectural salvage piece will make a statement.
Dining areas are easily defined by your table and chairs. The shape of your table is an important consideration. If you have a large family and entertain often, you will maximize seating with a table that can be expanded. Round, oval or rectangle the dimensions of your space will dictate what works best. For instance, a round table tends to encourage closeness and conversation. Engaging with people at a round table is easier. Everyone can see and hear one another. A rectangular table is a traditional choice which will accommodate a crowd. To make it more of a modern choice, choose a narrower table. You will bring people closer together, and it still allows for shared dishes in the middle of the table. Square tables are a more contemporary choice, but you need a large space in order to accommodate them. The perfect way to set the tone of your dining area is with an area rug. Color, texture, patterns…area rugs are the perfect way to warm up a space and set the style and color tones to be repeated in accent pieces in the surrounding spaces.
closer together YOU WILL BRING PEOPLE
Lighting is extremely important in large rooms with tall ceilings. LED fixtures provide energy efficiency, as well as offering reliable illumination overhead for years to come. No one wants to climb the tall ladders necessary to change those bulbs any more often than absolutely necessary! Ceiling fans are also useful in circulating the air in these larger rooms. For a more intimate lighting source, lamps and wall sconces add a more subtle glow. They also are a design opportunity. Lighting fixtures become the perfect accessory to enhance your design. From wood, metal and rustic styles to modern chrome and fabric shades, the right fixture can make your room.
Color impact. Tall spaces, make choosing color even more challenging. Wideopen spaces often are coated in lighter colors which serve as a neutral backdrop. Greys are still a popular choice. You can add personality and charm with complementary hues that you can pull out of an inspiration piece. Accent fabrics, rugs or artwork are the perfect place to look for just the right colors to repeat throughout your design. Consider creating a focal wall with a contrasting color or deeper shade. The next time you talk with a home builder, and you shake their hands, take a notice of them. They tell the story of years of work, experience and dedication to honoring their vocation. When you look at Jude Markway’s hands, that’s exactly what you see.
Building is a Markway family tradition. Jude grew up working beside his father, Marcellus and now his son, Gabe has chosen to do the same. Known for over 40 years for the skilled craftsmanship and care he puts into each
of the homes he builds and remodels, Jude has put his skill to the test by taking on his most important project to date -- building a dream retirement home for he and his wife, Mary.

The two of them have been planning this home for a very long time, and their son Levi a draftsman at Scruggs Lumber drew up the plans. Many of the unique materials they used in the design were harvested from past projects. Jude celebrates older homes and has skillfully restored many of them. Historical pieces that pay homage to beautiful homes of the past that would’ve otherwise ended up in a landfill were saved and 52 |

The craftsman style door frame and moldings with an extra beaded detail and plinth blocks is repeated throughout the home. The crowning touch is the double barrel-vaulted ceiling.

The living space is made for enjoyment whether it’s the whole family or just the two of them. Comfortable furniture is arranged to float in the center of the space which adds an expansive impression of the room and the opportunity to place treasured furnishings to house their displays. Mary loves Christmas and her Santa Claus collection. She keeps some of her favorites out year-round. Their son, Gabe is a self-taught taxidermist, and the large mounts were done by him. In the dining room, a coffered ceiling, built in cabinetry and a large table offers ample space for holiday gatherings. Mary painted and stained the beadboard on the back wall, adding to a time-honored look that could’ve been there for years. The fireplace features the same granite as the kitchen island, but they were lucky enough to find it in the boneyard, and it has a leather finish. It is surrounded by a custom wood mantle.

In the open kitchen and family room, the vaulted ceiling lifts the eye up to hand hewn logs from Dr. Conrad Balcer’s homeplace on Shepherd Hills Road. The beams date back to the mid-eighteen hundreds. More than anything these gathering rooms set the tone for the home. Beautiful rich wood custom cabinetry envelopes the heart of the home making a warm welcoming statement punctuated by stainless steel appliances, ample lighting, wood flooring and granite countertops. They fell in love with the granite they chose. The large island is a single slab with beautiful veining and movement. Prominently displayed atop the cabinets is a collection of sentimental family crockery.

The master bedroom features more design details added by Mary and Jude. Their furnishings were made from vintage five-panel doors by Jude. Hanging above the bed is a painting by Buck Taylor who played Newly in Gunsmoke. Carefully chosen custom features are used in the master bathroom to create a personal retreat that provides comfort and luxury. They laid the floor tile on a diagonal and then brought it onto the wall of the shower. On the shower floor is pebble tile. When they chose the tile, they were only able to look at a small sample and to their surprise the variations in the tiles greatly enhanced the final result. CAPITAL LIFESTYLES ď‚š SUMMER 2019

Downstairs has a ‘barn’ feel. The walls were hand finished by Mary. Plywood was installed and painted the beautiful white color and then May sanded back the paint to achieve the distressed look. The vintage door has been with them for at least 20 years and now it has a suitable place of honor in their forever home. Mary plans to make a stained-glass window in a quilt pattern in honor of her mother. The wood for the staircase came from Jude’s stash of treasures. Made from #1 pine, they planed each board and repurposed them into a stunning set of steps. Jude renovated the old Whaley’s East End Drug Store, and the corbels were salvaged from that project. They used an old barndoor track to further the barn aesthetic.
There are several artists in the Markway family, and Jude has their work lovingly displayed throughout the home. Their son, Luke submitted his original art to the Federal Duck Stamp Competition and was 39th in the country from a field of 150 entries. He also drew the trio of pencil sketches hanging above the well-worn leather chair.

In Mary’s crafts room, the vintage table is also from the Balcer’s home place. In the corner is a wood carving that Jude made of the Madonna and Child. A treasured needlepoint piece is lovingly framed and displayed. Mary’s father made it while he was a POW in WWII. He used a Red Cross sewing kit for needles and thread. Yarn, thread and other fibers were used to stitch together this remarkable tribute to service and sacrifice of the men he served with.

The Markway’s enjoy an amazing view of the home’s natural surrounds on the outdoor living spaces. Lumber and finishes from both the front and back porches were made from materials salvaged from previous remodels. The mix of textures from the rusted corrugated tin and the weathered wood blend beautifully with the wooded background.
The Markway
family
As Jude transitions into retirement and his son Gabe continues the family legacy, he remembers a conversation between designer, Tina Davis and a client. The homeowner was talking about how she needed the project to accommodate her family now and as they grow. He reflected on how that simple conversation sums up the true measure of a builder. “We are partners in a future where lives are framed and the future is waiting to be written and built,” says Jude. “Home building is more than walls and roofs, we’re a part of a family’s hope and dreams, where their story will be written.”

Lisa Lucas began her new home journey by finding the perfect land in a charming local community. The almost four acres are heavily wooded with mature trees and lots of wildlife, which suits their family perfectly. She began the preparations by enlisting the help of a local lumber yard to draw the plans and then collaborated with Dean Holtmeyer to build her dream home. Dean was great to work with, and she trusted him to
help her make the best choices as she worked through her options. From budget, finishes and structure, they were able to strike a balance to create something beautiful.
From the start, she had a good picture in her head of what she wanted. The plan was to create a space that was clean and classic but very family-friendly. It had to be something her young family could grow into and feel like it was their forever home.

Lisa’s kitchen conveys a young, relaxed and uncluttered aesthetic. Can’t you just imagine how much use the seven-foot long island gets? It features a huge prep surface, as well as room to spread out homework and enjoy simple meals. The back wall of cabinetry was custom crafted to pack plenty of storage into the space. Her talented cabinet maker was easy to work with and helped build-in many convenience features.

Lisa chose to use millwork with a classic style throughout the entire house. It’s the hallmark of an extra detail that makes a big impact on the overall design. The use of consistent colors, flooring and materials eases the transition from one space to the next.

CAPITAL LIFESTYLES ď‚š SUMMER 2019
The great room is flooded with natural light which makes the space feel even more open and airy. At every opportunity, large windows were placed to take advantage of the natural surroundings. Lisa’s favorite things in the home are her fireplaces. The corner fireplace is the focal point of the seating arrangement. The wood mantle combined with stone brings a rustic element to the multi-functional room. Her use of bright, light reflective colors enhances the expansive space. Particularly striking is the open and modern custom stair rail which was designed by the homeowner and custom built by a local craftsman. Every design should have a little black in it. And this stair rail delivers all the impact you could ask from one design element. This intriguing architectural detail was beautifully incorporated in the design of the home. On one side, it borders the dining space and on the other, Lisa built-in her efficient office space. The key factor in the design of the home was functional and flexible spaces for her family to enjoy. There is an intimate room off the kitchen with the best view of the natural wooded setting. You feel as if you are outside because of the placement of large windows. CAPITALLIFESTYLES.NET

She chose durable options for the seating and flooring, so the kids could bounce around and have a good time. The bar is great for entertaining and is the place where everyone gathers. The dark wood-toned cabinetry houses all the amenities a fun family room would need. There’s nothing like leather seating. It calls for you to sit down and relax in front of the stone fireplace. Again, she brought consistency to the design. The walls are light and further the relaxed atmosphere in the multifunctional space. Paint, flooring and the stone are the same as upstairs. This is a special place that is perfect for spending family time together.

CREATING

A Family Patio For All Ages Just your average side yard. Enjoying the outside on a 16'x16' screened-in porch. This was fine for a family of four. This family expanded, when the kids moved back to town, and grandkids are now running around... and they decided to host family events they quickly realized they had outgrown their space. After calling a few contractors, they decided to enlist the help of Stockman Stoneworks.
78 |
CAPITAL LIFESTYLES ď‚š SUMMER 2019
They worked together to design a tri-level patio. The first was planned to access the screened-in deck. They wanted to keep the grilling close to the kitchen. On the second level they wanted enough space for up to 30 people for dining. On chilly nights a built-in bench /fire pit area adds warmth. The third level was added on souly for the kids enjoyment.
Its large enough to hold an ellaborate playground structure and toys. It is enclosed by a custom Pilaster fence so the kids or dogs don't sneak away. The customer has added over 3,000 square feet of usable outdoor space. They can surely entertain in-style now on their patio or should we call it a "Partio"?

d BeytheonBlah Downsizing from a massive home, Vern and Emily Scheulen purchased this diamond in the rough. The community, location and size were just what they were looking for, but the interior-- it was just blah! If it wasn’t for their daughter along with designer, Carole Hughes reassuring them that the home could be everything they wanted and more, they would have passed it right by. Great design is about unfolding layers that inspire thought and delight. This home had many
layers to get through, but it had really good bones to create something special. Vern and Emily both had individual priorities for their new home. It was important for Vern to have a comfortable living space, and he needed a nice office. Emily wanted a fresh and updated home where simplicity of modern design creates a serene feeling where everything is beautifully put together. The original kitchen had all the necessities—but it needed a total
refresh. They were able to keep most of the cabinetry by refacing and reconfiguring some of the upper cabinets. A good use of space was imperative. After all, they were downsizing from a much larger house. The cabinetry received a fresh coat of paint. It always amazes us, how paint can immediately transform any room. In this case, tired cabinets became new again. In addition, new stainless-steel appliances, granite counters, oversized white subway tile and modern lighting were chosen to complete the clean and crisp new kitchen. CAPITALLIFESTYLES.NET

The unfussy design of this home enhanced with natural materials allows the sophisticated taste of its homeowners to speak for itself. This is especially apparent when you enter the main living space. The clear site lines from front to back emphasize the generous size of the rooms. The Scheulen’s love this smaller home. They are using about the same amount of space they did in their previous home, and it feels much more comfortable for the two of them. The design is really a gift they gave to themselves. Carole chose a soft neutral paint color to use throughout. They also replaced trim and added quarter round. Nice new trim for the home is similar to the perfect accessory which finishes off an outfit. Finally, they replaced all of the hardwoods on the main floor. The only real construction they had to do was to frame in the bump out where their new electric fireplace is installed. The furnishings they chose to complete the warm and cozy seating area have contemporary clean lines and look super comfortable. Adjacent to the large open great room is the four seasons room. Just imagine enjoying your morning coffee out there and catching a glimpse of the deer who visit often.

The master bath was completely gutted, so they could start new. New cabinets, countertops, fixtures and tile shower look like something you’d find in a luxurious hotel. Carole ran with the new design and completely transformed the space into the dream bath the Scheulen’s had envisioned. They now have a spa-like retreat in their own home.

The master bedroom is their sanctuary, a place of rest and relaxation …it is the perfect coastal retreat. There is a certain amount of romance in the soft blue color they chose for the walls. The large sleigh bed is balanced with luxurious bedding in a neutral palette. A large-scale light fixture is combined with contemporary artwork and lamps to bring a fresh touch of modern to the space. The room is not too masculine, not too feminine…it’s just right.

The downstairs was originally just a large open area. The team took advantage of having a blank slate to redesign the space. High on their priority list was a bar where they would have plenty of room to entertain family and friends. The stunning new bar was designed with conversation in mind. They love to entertain and everyone can interact comfortably and be a part of all the activity. The bar top is one huge slab of granite with no seams, and the split face stone backsplash goes all the way to the ceiling. 100 |

The new open space is brought into scale with a clever furniture arrangement. The strategically placed upholstered seating is the perfect place to enjoy the large screen TV. Friends and family gather around the table for a friendly game of cards, and there is overflow space in the large storage area. A creative plan on how to best utilize the space went a long way to achieve everything the Scheulen’s would want on their lower level.

Scheulen The tree-lined yard was one of the things that originally drew them to the home, and the patio is a perfect place to be close to nature. By placing an outdoor rug and new furnishings on the lower patio, they created a space where they both feel content. They transformed a property with a lot of potential and created a home with a refreshing familiarity with the help of a talented team of designers and craftsmen. Their home now has the charm they were hoping by using a little creativity, imagination and flair. Vern and Emily have banished the blah!

CONNECTION
John and Kathy Hunt
are transplants from the Kansas City area, where their spacious home was full of over-scaled furnishings and décor that defines the Johnson County aesthetic. The move to Jefferson City was a chance for them to start over with a fresh eye as to what would be most important to them. Their house hunt led them to a 2-story home in an intimate neighborhood tucked conveniently in the heart of Jefferson City. The home spoke to her immediately, and she knew they could make it their own.
As things fell into place and she had a vision for their home, Kathy visited Scruggs Lumber and met Regina Green, one of their designers. Sometimes you just know that things happen for a reason. It turns out that John and Kathy’s new home was built by Regina’s husband and was the first home they built together in 1999. An instant connection was formed. Even though the designer and her husband originally built the home, she saw the vision that Kathy had to make it her own. Together, they took a space in need of updating and gave it a modern reinterpretation.

To kick off the transformation, every finish in the home was updated. Starting in the entry, they chose wood look ceramic tile which flows through the main living areas. Paint is another common thread. Accessible beige is the perfect neutral color used to create a warm and cohesive backdrop throughout. Comfortable leather sofas pair with flame print arm chairs which flank the fireplace. The living room is a relaxing retreat for just the two of them, and it is ready for large gatherings of family and friends.
OPEN
Large and Open
Open concept doesn’t work for everyone and every house. She didn’t try to take down walls in order to achieve a completely open concept. She celebrated the good bones of the original floorplan which naturally flows through large openings in the common spaces making the rooms feel large and open.

TEN TIMES MORE IMPORTANT THAN CABLE –

BEFORE
The most transformative change in the kitchen was the removal of a peninsula that jutted into the walkway. She then worked within the existing footprint to keep the efficient work triangle. She chose not to introduce an island to the kitchen in order to keep the space open. Kathy loves to cook and entertain, so naturally she was concerned that this was the right decision. After their first gathering, she knew she had made the right choice. There was ample room for everyone to congregate… which is what always happens in a great kitchen. She can’t say enough good things about her cabinet maker. He considered how Kathy uses her kitchen and what specific storage needs she had. They planned built-in convenience features to house kitchen gadgets and small appliances, as well as adding a wine rack and much needed storage.

Kathy worked with Regina and her team of craftsmen to source new finishes for virtually every other area in the kitchen, including floor tile, cabinets, hardware, appliances, countertops, backsplashes, lighting and paint. The once lackluster kitchen was successfully transformed into a chic modern space—hardly recognizable from its previous state! The change from “before” to after’ is dramatic, and the homeowners together with well-chosen craftsmen pulled it off without any major challenges.

The dining room and kitchen are open to each other making it super easy to entertain. Modern dining room furnishings were chosen for a fresh uncluttered look. They found the original hemmed-in kitchen space too confining, so they used color and current materials to give it an expansive perspective. With the existing outdated wallpaper, laminate countertops, fading cabinets, and inadequate overhead lighting, this kitchen was in desperate need of an overhaul to meet the modern-day needs of the homeowners.

The master suite became the private retreat for the Hunt’s to enjoy. In the bedroom, she chose French Grey for the backdrop of this soothing transformation. Kathy aimed
for simplicity in design and choose modern furnishings with simple lines. The navy bedding which contrasts against the warm grey upholstered bed is stunning.

In the master bath, they considered several options to recreate the space. By removing a half bath, corner jetted tub and doors which closed off the space, they were able to work with a blank canvas and imagine the true potential. Ultimately they decided to keep the original plumbing layout, but they transformed every surface! New modern cabinetry, countertops and fixtures were chosen to create a beautiful restful retreat. The shower is a study of how to create a striking design just by using a combination of tiles and installing them in an imaginative way. The contrast of the large ceramic tile with the glass subway tiles is a perfect example of how to get big impact without breaking the bank!

Summer Movie Adventures Godzilla: King of the Monsters (PG-13) Hands down my most anticipated release of the entire year! Japan’s gigantic fire-breathing radioactive lizard was one of my favorite things in the world back when I was a kid, and everything we’ve seen in the marketing for this one is looking like it will do the big green hero justice and then some! With the director of holiday horror favorites like Trick ‘r Treat and Krampus at the helm and Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown in a supporting role, everything seems to be in the right place here, and I am chomping at the bit to check it out! Hail to the King baby!
The Dead Don't Die (R) I’m always in the mood for a comedic zombie flick, but even I have to admit that the genre is incredibly over-saturated, so it takes some real talent and creativity to breathe new life into a well-worn concept. Enter Jim Jarmusch, who has pretty much perfected the art of giving old ideas new life through his trademark sense of dry humor, quirky characters and immaculate directing talents. If the idea of a former Ghostbuster and current Star Wars villain facing off against a horde of the undead sounds like a good time to you, then Ragtag Cinema in Columbia has you covered next month!

CAPITAL LIFESTYLES SUMMER 2019
Summer movie season is once again upon us, so Hollywood has yet another lineup of anticipated films coming soon to your local multiplex! Already 2019 has delivered some pretty solid stuff. From the epic conclusion to the Marvel Universe’s Infinity Saga raking in all the critical praise and box office bucks, to an adaptation of a nostalgic video game/anime property being pulled off beautifully, to the third chapter in a popular action franchise knocking it out of the park, indeed it is a great time to be alive! There’s still plenty more to be excited about though, so let’s see what the rest of the summer has in store!
Toy Story 4 (G) Pixar is once again ready to tug at everyone’s collective heartstrings as the lovable characters from many a 90s-kid’s childhood return to the big screen for supposedly their last outing. This studio has always stood out as a game-changer in the realm of animation and character-driven stories, so of course lifelong Disney fans are lining up to see what they can deliver next and if this will be another amazing installment in a beloved franchise. For certain, we all have a friend in Woody and Buzz, so let’s hope their final adventure will be one to remember!
Child's Play (N/A) Speaking of toys that can walk and talk on their own, one of the most popular horror icons of all time is returning to the big screen as well this summer in a remake/reboot that actually looks like it could be a good time for many a slasher fan. With a fresh new coat of paint, a delightfully sinister atmosphere, and Luke Skywalker himself lending his voice to the evil doll (no joke) this may be an example of a horror remake that stands out from the crowd. At the very least it’ll make for a bloody fun time and devotees of the slasher genre will more than likely get enough to sink their teeth into.
Midsommar (N/A) The writer and director of last year’s sleeper horror hit Heredity unleashes his next project in July, and man does it look like an eerie good time! Not much is known in terms of the story, but the contrast of beautiful colors and a bright summer setting paired up with a brutal Wicker Man-style horror story is truly intriguing and has me nothing short of curious! I’m not entirely sure of what to expect, but that’s what makes the horror genre so much fun, so let’s hope director Ari Aster can beat the sophomore slump and deliver something special!
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (N/A) Not much is known about Quentin Tarantino’s latest epic outside of the fact that it is set in the 1970s, presents the story of an actor and his dedicated stuntman, and will feature the Charles Manson murders as the backdrop. When walking into a Tarantino film though, that’s exactly the way you want it to be! Audiences and critics never know what this guy is going to pull off next, but whatever it is, it will no doubt push buttons and pull no punches while delivering the thrills. Here’s hoping we get one more masterpiece out of this guy before his supposed retirement from the filmmaking business!
Fast and Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw (N/A) The Fast and the Furious franchise is one that seems to be really flying off the rails lately as it is becoming less and less about street racing and focusing on ridiculously goofy action and stunt work. This new spinoff appears to be dropping any and all pretense of the former and diving headfirst into the latter! Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Jason Statham have perfectly molded their careers by delivering over-the-top action, machismo-fueled one-liners, and endearingly goofy B-movie camp with a high-budget polish. Therefore, it was only a matter of time when the two of them would share the screen in one gloriously silly ride filled with all the cars, guns, and bone-crunching fist fights an action junkie could hope for! Not going to be Shakespeare by any means, but may still make for a cheesy good time nonetheless!
