1] DUBLIN PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE
INTERNATIONAL DESIGN COMPETITION: [second place] Dub’ Hub pedestrian bridge arches across the Liffey river to connect the lively historic district with the contemporary district in Dublin. The broad, park-like bridge offers direct routes, passive paths, varieties of seating as well as a Wi-Fi hotspot, charging stations, bike parking, and a massive ribbon display panel. Three rolling hills reminiscent of the irish grassy lowlands provide a variety of paths that traverse through a botanical display of grassland Eco-regions that provide both privacy and sunset views. The hills become intersected on the opposite side with stepped concrete terraces that mimic the rocky morphology of coastal Ireland. The fourth hill is inverted to provide access to the water and act as a small amphitheater. Team collaborators: Matt Relyae, Jason Buckley, I Maria Calderon
Users bring the bridge to life via social media with real-time messages, images and videos appearing on the LED ribbon. Night time experience of Dublin is dramatically enhanced by the vivid displays of light reflecting off the river.
Recreational access to the River below is provided by a series of steps descending to the waters edge. A botanical
display of endemic grasslands is sprinkled on the west slopes of the mounded landscape.

2] ROCHESTER URBAN INFILL - CORNELL UNIVERSITY STUDIO A Rustbelt city has its downtown heart sliced out with a sunken highway. The proposed strategy recreates an at-grade pedestrian environment and urban park that reconnects the inner and outer neighborhoods. This landscape patch celebrates Rochester’s hidden river channel by directing storm water through rain-gardens back to the river channel. A proposed building massing strategy improves commerce & connections between the inner and outer-loop neighborhood. Cornell University, 3rd year studio. 3] ESTUARINE HABITAT FOR ABANDONED PIERS, NYC
This design takes advantage of two abandoned piers that already have sediment buildup around them and introduces a series of gabion structures that will induce sedimentation around them. The strategically placed gabions prevent strong southward tides from completely eroding the subsurface landscape adjacent to the bulk head. As sediment deposits, the river bottom becomes stabilized with aquatic vegetation.

The intent of this design is to aid in the recovery of endemic estuarine plant and fish species that previously teemed the Hudson river. This river is now lined with remnants of wood piers and a long solid bulkhead or sea wall. Constant dredging and strong currents have prevented natural sediment build up, and therefore, the formation of shallow waters that harbor native estuarine species.

3] ESTUARINE HABITAT FOR ABANDONED PIERS, NYC In order to understand the movement of the strong southward tides that will shape the underwater topography, a water resistant scaled model was built. This model helped inform the sediment deposit diagram previously shown. The design shows some access to pedestrian exploration, but the most interesting user experience will be derived in a kayak or canoe that can better maneuver among the islands and be down close to the water.

5] KAYAK LAUNCH, BRAZOS RIVER TX
This design charette was conducted as a multidisciplined, pro-bono effort in order to come up with for kayak access ideas for one of the largest rivers in Texas. The proposed kayak launch overcomes the 18 feet in elevation change through a ramp that minimally impacts existing vegetation and allows boating aficionados to gently hull their kayak to the water.

1] MULTI-FAMILY HOUSING COMPLEX, HOUSTON TX The predominant gesture in this design is the intersection of simple geometry. Crossing paths, rectangular planting beds and diagonal mow bands meet at a square, equilateral triangle, circle or right triangle. Every last corner was designed to create continuous interest so that tenants will derive a sense of ownership in the plantings adjacent to their doors. As the assistant project manager for this project, I was able to develop most of this project with minimal supervision. I developed two schematic options, and after some client input and value engineering derived this rendered plan, which was presented as shown for initial permitting procedures.

Construction documentation for this project was a challenge given the acute angles, varied surface materials and custom concrete patterns. Team effort was necessary to derive to a set of plans and details that would be easily interpreted by the client and contractors.

8] DAYCARE CENTER, HOUSTON TX This facility was designed for the care for 300 children within a campus based in the oil and gas industry. Considering the amount of time that children spend at such centers, one must closely consider the spaces where small children stretch, climb, discover, fall and get dirty. Each space was designed to be discoverable in different ways every day and at different stages of their childhood.
This design proposes specialized play equipment for its ability to develop childhood motor, social, emotional and cognitive skills. The subsurface exploration theme is predominant, inspiring the shapes and colors of the fall surfaces and paths, which mimic the corporate colors and pipeline morphology. The play equipment was also selected to trigger exploratory skills and an interest in a symbiotic relationship with nature.

CONCEPT INITIAL CONCEPT
Designed during a quick paced charette, various options were rendered using a combination of hand graphics and a computer tablet.
In order to take it one step beyond the commendable quality of a green roof, this design is both an exiting space for building users and a representation of the organization’s mission, which is in the oil & gas exploration industry. The concentric plazas and gardens symbolize the connectivity between the various bodies of an organization - a symbolic gesture evident from aboriginal works of art to company logos.

Built on top of parking structure, the majority of the garden was planted on a roof, while tree
pits were left as holes that extended 3 meters below ground and were protected by a guardrail. This design was picked from various options presented to the client for its ability to create a sense of broadness due to the winding paths that helped break up the monotony of the houses.
Meandering paths were designed to generate the illusion of a broader corridor between the buildings.

18] MULTI-FAMILY DEVELOPENT, GUATEMALA CITY A developer hired Lo Verde to work on a comprehensive analysis of the existing vegetation, to evaluate the proposed circulation by the planner, and redesign the green spaces. The diagrams to the right proposed various changes to circulation within the neihborhoods, preserved existing trees, designated pedestrian paths, located soft trails and bike trails, proposed tree species and designated uses to the different green spaces throughout the community.

18] MULTI-FAMILY DEVELOPMENT, GUATEMALA CITY This park forms part of one neighborhood complex within the master planned community. It attempts to make the largest possible turf area surrounded by an interconnected path for biking, skating and strolling. This park becomes a communal front yard for families to play and stroll. The meandering design of the paths soften the rectilinear architecture and allow for small pockets of ornamental plantings.
Small pocket parks like this one were built in different neighborhoods

19] PENT HOUSE TERRACE, GUATEMALA CITY On the sixth story of a multi-family building complex in Guatemala city, lies this large penthouse terrace, which wraps around the entire apartment, a structure reminiscent of colonial architecture. The open views from the building out to the terrace called for a space that allowed distant views in some areas, screening from neighboring buildings, and wind buffering in others. The space was organized into various rooms: a cocktail courtyard, a fire pit, a BBQ, an outdoor yoga room, a sheltered card table and small play spaces for the girls. Plantings were restricted to the planter edges which were designed to function as a seat ledge and provided enough room for trees in some areas. The palette was a play on various tones of greens and whites, with juxtaposing textures and heights.

The front yard, which was the largest flat space, was built over a parking garage, using staggered steps and retention walls to hide the car access. Grasses of various forms and colors were used to complement the simplistic lines of architecture.

LOWER FLAT LAWN
An indoor garden displayed large fern trees, evoking an ancient forest feel. The back yard addressed topography by dividing the space into three areas, the top flat lawn, the middle slope and another flat area on the bottom. The middle portion addressed slope with access steps and a 4 meter long slide that the children of the house use often.
