IMBA’S TIPPING POINT 2014 WAS A CRUCIAL YEAR
e will not know for sure for another year or two, but I suspect that 2014 will be recognized as a tipping point in the reorganization of IMBA in the United States. This reworking of our association has resulted in a much more efficient and more connected structure, one built around our local chapters (180 to date) and arranged in nine regions. IMBA exists for its members, who largely connect and belong to the association through membership in a local chapter. If you do not have access to a chapter at this moment please believe me when I say we hope to change that! Our new structure is yielding unprecedented results on the local level. Our goals remain unchanged—improved access for mountain biking and an unwavering commitment to trail conservation and stewardship activities.

Relocated the national headquarters to a much larger facility in order to accommodate training programs for chapter leaders. Invested in and deployed nine region directors and five associate region directors to strengthen and enhance chapter-led efforts. For every $1.00 of shared membership revenue retained at the national level in 2014, $2.40 was reinvested in direct local chapter support. Together with local chapters, nationwide membership reached an all-time record high.
It’s not an exaggeration to say that mountain bike advocacy would be doomed without an effective organizational structure. Growing IMBA’s membership is important, but it’s not the end game. The real end game is for IMBA to function as an effective national (and, yes, international as well) association that connects mountain bikers and allows them to ride and steward the land. The enemy of such access is apathy. Be a link in the chain—join your local IMBA chapter, or help us create a new one where you live and ride. See You on the Trails,

IMBA’S FINANCIAL HEALTH IN 2014 Contributions, including individual membership and corporate support, showed strong year-over-year growth in 2014, and IMBA added 32 new chapters to the fold. Two low-interest loans from philanthropists allowed IMBA to increase its investment in critical program services including regional staff–often shared positions with chapters– and funded key programs in trail development, community technical assistance, land manager training, grants and research. As a non-profit charitable organization, IMBA partners with thousands of donors and members to invest in both local and national priorities: improving quality of life, creating bicycling opportunities for kids, putting more trails on the ground and reaching more land managers than ever before to improve mountain bike opportunities. IMBA will continue to invest in programs that create, protect and enhance great mountain bike experiences. With your support, we can do even more in 2015. One hundred and eighty (180) IMBA U.S. chapters in nine IMBA regions were served by nine region directors and five associate region directors. Thirty (30) Trail Building Fund grants were awarded in 15 states, totaling $360,000. IMBA staff made more than 35 visits to Washington D.C. to protect and enhance mountain bike access. Printed 5,000 copies of Bike Parks: IMBA’s Guide to New School Trails. Supplied cash support of $357,000 to IMBA chapters and chapter-focused events. Users of MTBProject.com mapped more than 35,000 miles of trails. Four hundred (400) attendees travelled to the IMBA World Summit in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, including representatives from 13 nations. Distributed 12 national-level action alerts, each encouraging more than 60,000 alert subscribers to speak out in favor of mountain biking. The Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew traveled 72,998 miles, teaching trail building schools to 1,692 attendees. 5

Bell Long-time corporate supporter Bell Helmets stepped up to the elite level with the 2013 introduction of Bell Built Grants. Shimano Shimano American Corporation has supported IMBA advocacy and communications projects for many years. Currently, Shimano provides elite-level support for IMBA’s Mapping Project, featured on MTBProject.com. Specialized Specialized Bicycle Components supports IMBA’s work in many ways, including providing funding for the Public Lands Initiative, IMBA’s California Region and IMBA Europe. SRAM SRAM Corporation and the SRAM Cycling Fund helped launch IMBA’s regional and chapter program in 2011 and 2012. The fund currently broadly supports IMBA’s Public Lands Initiative, IMBA Europe and the Bike Park Initiative. Subaru of America Subaru is the title partner of the Subaru/ IMBA Trail Care Crew program and has been since the program’s inception. Subaru also supports IMBA members through the Subaru-IMBA VIP Purchase Program and is a presenting sponsor of IMBA Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day Trek Trek Bicycle Corporation donates $10 from every full-suspension mountain bike they sell to help fund IMBA’s Trail Building Fund in the U.S. and Canada. Trek is also the official bike of the Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crews. That support has led to hundreds of new miles of trails in local communities and new projects worldwide. Additionally, more than 1000 “Game Changer” Trek dealers donate $10 to IMBA for each full-suspension bike sold. 9
