Tony Dee Mantanga My name is Tony, I joined Zazi magazine last year. My role in Zazi is going around interviewing the youth and writing about issues that they face in their daily lives. I would like to see Zazi touching and inspiring the lives of young people, even to go as far as crossing the boarders of South Africa. I want it to be internationally recognised cause what we doing as a production team and as a whole is huge and its making a positive impact in people’s lives.
I’m 22-years-old and the eldest of two kids. I grew up in Langa and Gugulethu and studies photography at the Cape Town School of Photography. I’m an outgoing positive individual and I love art. I am patient but very curious. I best express myself through music (written word) also through capturing images people can relate to rather emotionally. I hog spectators through Photography. I tell my story and what I see through my music, Hip Hop genre. I joined Zazi in 2011 and act as the photographer at events, workshops and the magazine itself. One day I want to establish my own production company where we cater for Music, Film, Photography.
Sibusiso Manzini Ntsika ‘Bra daki’ Daki Ntsika is a Middledrift born Multimedia Design Producer (Graphic Designer) who came to came to Cape Town to further his education. And now here I am as a Layout Artist/Art Director for Zazi, how that happened is a story for another day. Be Ntswempu.
Siyabonga Ndaba As a young person who is very ambitious and constantly busy with something I feel that I must inspire other young people to aspire in living a positive life, and by looking forward to new possibilities while trying to improve on their lives in whatever gift God has given them. My involvement with Zazi is in cartoon illustration, collecting stories and compiling horror scopes. I chose to be with Zazi because there I feel at home and like I’m with people who are honest with me, people who don’t hesitate to help when the need arises or to bluntly criticize when due.
Vuyokazi Ndobeni My name is Vuyokazi Ndobeni and I am 18 years old. I am bubbly, crazy, different and liberated. I make it a point to surround myself with positive beings. My biggest dream would be to see poetry grow in the townships and to start a revolution. I joined Zazi because I loved the idea of working with and empowering the youth. It is wonderful being surrounded by a group of people that share a dream.
Nesiphi Ndobeni My name is Nesiphi Ndobeni. 17 years of age. I am outspoken, hard working, determined and I can be a DIVA. I joined ZAZI magazine because I saw an opportunity for me to grow, to get to know myself and the privilege of working with different people. I have a dream of starting my own soccer club and working in the fashion industry.

My name is Sibusiso Manzii from the seven four double five. I’m fascinated by the hip hop, radio and retail because they are fun professions but I am very passionate about all of them. In hip hop I feel that I am different and on the quest of starting my own movement. I want people who listen to my music to learn something at the end of every song I rap but I’m not going to limit myself from writing whatever I want to write about. Radio is what I love doing too. I fell in love with it in 2010, and I’m currently hosting shows on UCT Radio and Imbo Live. I write for Zazi to spark young people’s minds to make them change their life and have a positive mindset.

Working for Zazi Magazine allows me to be who i am and provides me that platform for more self-growth. A: Well I got a phone call to meet up with a girl and her brother and they want to meet with me about something. So I’m actually rushing to get ready for the appointment. 24-year-old Nomfusi Gotyana gives reason to why South African music should be given more recognition. Her beauty shines through her music and her zest for life has helped her fulfil her dream with pride.
Who is Nomfusi? I am an ordinary young lady from the townships, who grew up with a single sangoma mother. I became the centre of attention because of the rituals at home that happened regularly. I also grew up in the house of God. My brother took me to church every Sunday. Musically I have always loved music and the stage. I sang from primary to high school to now. Where did you grow up? I grew up in the Eastern Cape in Port Elizabeth. Tell us about your challenges growing up I had a great home environment and I was a very happy child. I only realised and became aware of reality

when my mother died when I was12. I started to see the different levels in life, and I had to rush my childhood. It became a wake-up call because I saw that things are actually happening out there.
What kind of music do you do? I do not have a specific genre. My album has afro pop and soul mixed with a bit of country. There are also a couple of rock songs. Would you go for other genres? Like gospel? I do gospel and I’m not biased. I grew up with tradition and gospel. So I would very much venture in other genres, which I already do.
COVER STORY preciate life. So, all in all this year for me is all about happiness.
What can we expect from Nomfusi in the future? I dream of live entertainment, putting up shows like Michael Jackson. I want to touch souls in every artistic way possible. You can expect me being there living for the people - in a beautiful and good way. Any upcoming gigs? I will be at the Bassline in Newtown on the 25th of January and on the 1st of March at the State theatre in Pretoria. What advice would you give to the youth that would like to get into your line of work? There is no easy recipe. It is hard, but I would advise them to love themselves and look at their demons and say “I can do it”. The mirror is a good place to look and talk to yourself, and show yourself love.
How do people from other countries respond to your music? It’s scary but I managed to fill up a place in Germany when I did my one man show. The response confirmed that music is a spiritual thing, it speaks to the heart. Photographer: Jon Cottam www.joncottam.com
What has been the highlight of your career? The first would be living my dream everyday and being on stage. It has been truly a dream come true. The second one was when I got invited for the opening of the One and Only hotel in Cape Town. Not only did I get to sing with Judith Sephuma but I also got to see many wonderful artists like Hugh Masekela. What are the peoples’ perceptions of you now that you have made it? Even if there were people who said negative things I never really heard them. But I still relate to people from the township in my constant fight for success. Whatever perceptions they do have about me, I am all for the good and I don’t act like I am not from the township. What are your plans for this New Year? My goal has always been to live life. You know how people just exist, well I just want to enjoy and ap-

ELECTRONIC NEWS GATHERING CAMERAMAN SIHLE MKHIZE TELLS IT ALL
Sihle Mkhize is a news cameraman for SABC in Bhisho, who works in the field. His day usually starts at the office where he gets assigned a story anywhere in his jurisdiction. He then goes out with a reporter, shoots, and comes back to the office where he edits the piece and feeds it via satellite to their main office in Johannesburg for broadcast later in the day.

GETTING TO KNOW THE JOB WHAT IS THE ROLE OF A CAMERAMAN? As a cameraman your work becomes one of the main elements in any story. The visuals you share bring the story to life. It is in fact true that when people watch television they take in more what they see, rather than what they hear. That is why your job becomes the key to a successful production in any broadcasting station. WHAT DOES ONE NEED TO HAVE TO BE A CAMERAMAN? You need to have drive, resilience and flexibility. Whether you are sent into a war zone or on set with the queen of England, you must have these quali-

ties or you will surely break under pressure. Your skill will be to know which angle to shoot from and to capture emotion in time. You will also be the reporter’s wing-man, hence it’s important that you work well in a team. WHAT ARE YOUR WORKING HOURS LIKE? It differs from company to company depending on the number of staff. Here there are only two of us cameramen. Each one works seven days on standby and three on normal 08h00 to 16h00, then you get four days off from Friday to Monday every second weekend. Standby means you take a work car home plus your kit (camera, microphones, etc.) and if something happens at any time they call you and you decide with the reporter where you’ll meet then head off to the story.
If like Sihle you enjoy the thrill of danger surrounding you, this would definitely be a good career choice. Although you will probably face many challenges as a news cameraman the satisfaction of telling someone‘s story will be worth it. Hopefully Sihle’s experiences have given you better insight on what this job entails. Afterall we need visual story tellers that can give an enhanced understanding to any story.
WHAT IS THE MOST EXCITING THING ABOUT YOUR JOB? Meeting new people, going to different places every day and new challenges as I said - I love them, they grow on one. Being outside the office is exciting for me too.
THE CHALLENGES Being a cameraman is not for the faint hearted. Sihle tells what it is like to be on the scene of violence and major uproar. Being in that scene is challenging and energizing. When you are passionate about the job you find yourself getting super close up shots. You can completely shut off from the danger but one eye will stay alert. WHAT WERE SOME OF THE MOST HORRIFIC SCENES YOU HAVE EVER BEEN ON? I have had to face horrible scenes such as car accidents, property damages (shack fires), interview people who have lost loved ones. My first so to say horrible sight was when Table Mountain was on fire. One street person burnt to death that night and I shot the burnt body. My knees shook. WHAT KEEPS YOU GOING AFTER EXPERIENCING SUCH TRAGEDIES? I love challenges and I’m passionate about the art. When I lift the piece of equipment I just get hooked.

Some people consider the number 13 to be lucky yet others believe it to be by all means doom and gloom. Whatever you believe, will you really let a number dictate how your year will turn out?
If 2012 was not as good as you had hoped for it to be, you can make up for it by doing things differently in 2013. Making New Year’s resolutions only works if you stick to them. Let’s face it though, by mid March we forget about our resolutions and end up falling back into old habits. Start by making positive change. If you’re going back to varsity, high school or to your job; remember that past mistakes will only be repeated if you have not learnt from them. HOW TO KICK START THE NEW YEAR Did you know that in the English language, 13 is the smallest number spelt with eight letters? Take this as a life lesson. No matter how insignificant you may feel at any point in time, remember that the smallest things you do can become the most significant step you take in your future. This is your life and you are in control of your destiny. •Set goals for yourself - Short term goals are good

to start off with. Write them down and tick them off if you have achieved them. Don’t create short term goals that are not within your reach. Let’s be realistic, you can’t say you want a Lamborghini within three months, if all you can afford is Beetle. JUST BE YOU We’ve all tried to fit in at some point in life. The trouble with trying to fit in is that, you can never really be yourself. Get away from people who don’t make you comfortable enough to be yourself. This is easier said than done because you could very well become a misfit, if you stray from the crowed. There’s an upside though; you will be so much happier being around people that accept your crazy, extraordinary side. If you can’t be who you are, how will you ever discover the great potential that lies within?

TAKE CHANCES If you don’t take a chance, how will you ever know the outcome? It is far better to know and experience the outcome rather than to wonder, “what if” for the rest of your life. No one is going to hand you that golden ticket of success if you don’t take a risk. If it doesn’t work out at least you can say you tried and took that leap of faith. BUILD SOLID RELATIONSHIPS We need people around us. It’s even better if you have a special person in your life. If your previous relationship didn’t work out, don’t be scared to start a new one. The reason it didn’t work is because something better awaits you. Holding on to someone you don’t love is just selfish. That person could be with someone that can truly love them. To fall in love is a beautiful thing, but to be with someone just because you’re feeling lonely – that’s a story for another day. Don’t do it. CHERISH THE SMALL THINGS IN LIFE To look at the sunset over the horizon, gaze at the stars and to receive an encouraging SMS, all make life worth it. You will often remember how you laughed your butt off with your friend rather than remember that hot guy or girl checking you out. Remember you can’t start the next chapter of your life if keep re-reading your last one, so make the most of this year. Didn’t they say the world was going to end on 21 December 2012? So consider this your second chance, even if you didn’t believe it.

Picture this: you and your love, chilling on the beach watching the sunset, when out of the blue you hear that familiar “beep, beep”. It’s the phone…again.
These days it is impossible to get away from the social network-bug, no matter where you are, it always seems to follow. It’s even more annoying when you can’t get alone time with your significant other because of someone that just keeps texting you. Conflict will somehow arise one way or the other no matter how innocent the texts may be because let’s face it - we all have that green monster lurking inside us, for jealousy is the root of all evil in any relationship. With that said, here are some tips on how to get through some common trends that most couples find themselves in…
I’m sure you must’ve had those “who the hell are you” moments whilst going through your girlfriend or boyfriend’s phone and you can’t help but ask yourself: “are they exes, friends or strangers maybe?” You find yourself checking their BBM and decide to snoop and find out for yourself. There’s no harm in doing that, right? WRONG.

TIP: Instead of snooping around, ask about those unfamiliar people, but be beware of how you go about it. Trust me, you don’t want to come across as obsessed, or a psycho who can’t be trusted. Gents, when she finds out you were snooping, (and she definitely will one way or the other) she’s not going to feel trusted. This goes for you too ladies - if you receive doubtful answers, there could be a snake in the grass. Always remember that if they can’t be open about who they’re socializing with, they won’t really be open about many other things too.
If you do give your pin it proves you have nothing to hide but also on the contrary, love is about trust and the person should trust you enough not to expect your pin in the first place. Many would argue about the depth of trust and whether asking for your pin is a sign of trust issues or not.

TIP: Do not exchange pin numbers! Quick story; I dated a nice fella whom I trusted and adored. We exchanged pins and all was good. My fairytale ended when we broke up. The bum changed my pin number. Goodbye contacts and hello boredom.
The two of you took stunning pictures together on the phone and as time went by, you find yourself reminiscing about the glory days, and you come across pictures of other girls/guys on their phone. They tell you not to worry and that they’re just pictures of contacts and claims that they don’t even know each other. DO: If you do not agree with it, be open about it and
tell them you would appreciate it if the pictures were deleted. After all, you want to be the only face they see when they look at their phones, right? DON’T: Don’t go and delete the pictures yourself. You will definitely come across as crazy and will not be trusted with their phone ever again.
As it appears, your partner is still in touch with his/her exes as they are still texting each other. Is this okay? Yes, it is. Start to worry when you are not let in on the conversation. If you feel your love is too attached to his or her ex, then you might just have a problem. Tip: Keep in mind that you are being told who they are chatting to and texting with the ex is no secret. This means that they’re open with you. Trust your instinct; if you not sure about what’s going on and you just can’t shake off that feeling, speak about it and have an honest conversation about your feelings. Feeling insecure won’t do you good anyway. You do not have to put up with ex’s and if you happen to feel like the ex has to be deleted, tell your partner just that, make honesty a big thing in your relationship.

Cycle your way to a brighter future

No matter the circumstance we find ourselves in, there’s always something that makes it bearable. Organisations like the Velokhaya Life Cycling Academy are that light of hope for many youth in disadvantaged communities. Based in Khayelitsha, Velokhaya is an organization that introduces opportunities that help communities grow individually through cycling. They uplift the youth with necessary life skills which include discipline, teamwork, and dedication, even if this sometimes means a little blood, sweat and tears every now and then.
HOW VELOKHAYA LIFE CYCLING ACADEMY CAME ABOUT Dealing with too many challenges may often bring one down and as a means of dealing with them we try to work out an escape route. The academy first came to be in 2003 with a specific purpose:

to help those living in underprivileged communities with resources to do so. With the academy based in Khayelitsha, there would be many challenges they would need to overcome while they set out to provide the youth with access to a more holistic education. The youth was eager to participate in cycling and the programme formed the basis for those who had no access to sporting facilities. Being part of the cycling academy aided in developing their own growth through the programmes activities, which vary from BMX cycling to school-based road safety programmes and even partaking in the sport at national and international level.

SUCCESS STORIES All in all, Velokhaya has received successful results in increased self-esteem and confidence levels amongst the participants. A shining example would be Luthando Kaka, the first black SA cyclist who competed internationally as a lasting member of a European pro-team. He is now currently riding for Team Bonitas and is financially independent. Every year the Velokhaya riders participate in the prominent Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour, which is the world’s largest individually-timed cycling event. In 2012, 111 Velokhaya riders participated in the Cycle and Junior Tours and as a result received 34 new bicycles donated by the Pick ‘n Pay-sponsored LikeBike social media campaign alongside South Africa’s Minister of Sport and the Department of Sport and Recreation. The organisations’ successful revamp of the Velokhaya BMX Oval in July 2011 was presented to the judges of the World Design Capital 2014 as a concrete example of how design could benefit those living in township communities.

He gives kick boxing a new meaning to the youth from areas like Vygieskraal, Kewtown and Hanover Park. How on earth can he give kick boxing a new meaning? Who better to ask than the man himself… Q: What is Fighterz Inc about? A: Fighterz Inc. is a promotional company for combat sports and fighters in general. It also aims to link the fans to the sports as well as to the stars of the sport in new and innovative ways. Q: Where did Fighterz Inc first start for you? A: When I realized that many greats in South Africa’s combat sports industry are not even known to the public, gyms and champion fighters alike.

Q: Looking at this sport from a spectators view, it might seem to only be teaching me about defense techniques and some really hardcore punching moves. Is there more to it than just hopping around and throwing punches? What else can I learn from this sport? A: To become good at combat sports requires you to develop self discipline, dedication, commitment, courage and relentlessness. Q: I heard through the grapevine that you and Fighterz Inc are also involved in the community. Is that true? If so, how? A: Yes we assist in the training of under-privileged youth in areas such as Vygieskraal, Kewtown and Hanover Park. These youth have taken very well to the classes and totally enjoy it.

Q: What do you wish to achieve with Fighterz Inc? A: To help under-privileged youth on a larger scale and donate funds for further development of these youth. Q: What final words of encouragement do you have for the youth? A: You can do anything you set your hearts and minds to. Believe in yourself! You were born for a reason. God always has a plan and makes no mistakes. Realise your purpose here on this earth and become the best you can ever be. Greatness is destined to you, if you but believe.
Q: In which way can this sport be beneficial to the youth? A: This sport keeps the youth busy with constructive activity and out of mischief. It then teaches discipline, dedication and shows them that hard work pays off.

Every new year, where ever we go, everyone has their own ways of celebrating the New Year. As the places change, so do some traditions for celebrating the New Year change. Sam Morris gives us some insight about living in the UK and how they celebrate the New Year. By: Vuyokazi Ndobeni
Q: what is it like living in the UK? A: good fun and enjoyable living in the UK. Public transport is very good and the health care system is free, so that helps. The only downfall is the weather, it can get very cold. Q: what would you consider to be the best spots to hang out in for young people? A: I would say the best hang out spots for young people would have to be the bowling allies as they have pool tables and arcades inside. Going to the movie theatres, coffee shops, bars, or just staying in at a friend’s house when it’s cold outside. Q: because of it being the New Year, what are some of the traditions for celebrating the New Year? 34

A: the traditions for celebrating the New Year are toasting good wishes to friends or family with champagne, at parties with fireworks. As big Ben in London strikes 12 to link arms and sing ‘auld Lang syne’ which translated means ‘times gone by’- talking about love and friendship. Q: to what extent does South Africa differ to the UK? A: better weather, South Africa seems more laid back. Everyone I have met so far have been so friendly and welcoming but to me there isn’t much difference. Q: whilst living in the UK, what was some of the highlights for you? A: my highlights in the UK would be that it is
OUT OF AFRICA a gorgeous country, a family place. And will always be my home country. Q: if I were to visit the UL, what should I be most on the lookout for and why? A: if you were to visit the UK, I would say stay in London, there is so much to d in London, you would never get bored. And look out for going on the London eye on a clear day, as you can see for miles. Q: what, in your opinion, draws visitors to that area? A: the land marks I think is what draws people in, with being able to go to Buckingham palace, the tower of London and seeing Madame Tussaud, and the list goes on. Q: what can you tell about the people living there? A: the people living in the UK are fun, outgoing, and friendly and all British people have their own personalities and sense of humour, great to be around. Q: tell me something about the UK that no one knows. A: well, I am not sure if people know that Buckingham palace has its own police station. Q: final thoughts about the UK. A: my final thoughts on the UK are that it is a
great place to go visit on holiday; to me it will always be the best as it’s my home country. To me it’s a great place to be whether it’s with friends or family, friendly people and great things to look at and places to go.

FIND ANYTHING AT THE FLEA MARKET A flea market is an outdoor open market used by vendors to exchange new and pre-used items to customers at reasonable prices. You can basically find anything you’re looking for whether it’s for your mom, baby sister, grandpa, or best friend but you’ll have to search really hard. These items could be anything from food, clothing, books, gifts, your gran’s antiques, and, well… just about anything you can think of. Not only is the list diverse, these vendors and buyers are from all different walks of life eager to make or save a buck. WE EXPLORE THE MARKET OURSELVES I recently took a trip to Cape Town’s flea market in Heerengracht Street and was amazed at how far R50 can go. I was able to buy bracelets which came in various styles, and a filling snack was not far from the list. Scoring a pair of shades for R20 is always a big bonus, don’t you think? With that being said, go out and enjoy the wonders of Cape Town while the sun is still shining and experience our local flea markets. Whether you’re looking for African wood carvings or classic 1970’s decor for your home, Cape Town’s flea markets have it all.
