Chris Dill If you have a business, chances are you are doing some kind of online marketing to promote it. In the 1990’s, marketing a small business was easy; you paid for newspaper advertisements and ads in local fliers. Today, the most affective way to advertise your business is through online marketing, which is much more difficult and often expensive. There are different ways to market a business online, through paid ads called banners on other sites, pay per click advertising, link building, etc. Small business owners soon learned that one of the most efficient and inexpensive ways to market their companies online was to optimize their website. SEO (Seach Engine Optimization) means spending time and money to include keywords, links and content on a site to make it rank higher in Google searches. For example, if you offer home improvement services in Los Angeles, you want people to be able to find your business quickly when searching for those services on Google. If your site is not optimized, you business may not come up in searches until page 33, for example. No one is going to look that far when searching for needed services, so you will not gain any new clients. However, if you spend money on SEO, you may come up in the first three pages of Google searches, and start seeing more and more traffic to your websites, which will translate into new customers.

What is SEO? Many small business owners hired marketing companies to optimize their websites to attract traffic. One of the most popular ways to use SEO to make pages rank higher was to utilize backlinking, or leaving a link to your website on another similar site. This practice of having other sites include weblinks to your website would make your site quickly climb to the forefront of search results. However, in 2012, Google released its first Penguin update; overnight, many small businesses that appeared at the forefront of search results saw their rankings drop. Online businesses that relied on their high rankings on Google to bring in new clients went out of business.

What is the Google Penguin Update? A Google Penguin Update is an algorithm change in the way Google scores SEO efforts, such as backlinks on sites. The update assessed websites’ backlinks and determined if they were natural, such as if a blogger happened to mention your website in their article, or unnatural, such as for the purposes of SEO. Since the first Google Penguin Update 1.0, Google has made five more algorithm changes that have all affected online websites. Many website owners anxiously awaited the newest release to see how it would affect their businesses. One of the biggest reasons that business owners were so eager for this update was because any SEO changes that they had made to their sites if they dropped in rankings after the last update would not go into affect until the next update. with the newest release of the update can websites that dropped last time possibly be reinstated into their previous positions in the search fields. What Changes Did Google’s Penguin Update of 2014 Have? The latest Google update, which is being called Penguin Update 3.0, started on October 17th of this year, and will be rolling out in the next few weeks. This specific update penalized websites that had bad links, which Google calls spam, and should refresh websites that were previously penalized, but have since fixed their SEO. Google has stated that this new refresh, as they are calling it, will affect 1% of queries in English, and possibly more in other languages, according to SEO Roundtable ( ). What Does This Mean for My Website? Google has released six new updates since 2012, so it’s obvious that more updates will be coming. If your site was penalized by Google and has lost visibility in search rankings, do not despair. You can hire a professional marketing firm that will fix your bad links and advise you on proper methods of SEO. Remember, though, that the changes won’t affect your rankings until the next update is rolled out. If your website was not hit or was reinstated back to its higher rankings, you still want to update your SEO constantly. Remember that Google looks for fresh content on your website regularly.
