Not only is social networking beneficial within the context of search engine optimization – business pages often show up near the first page of Google if they have a Facebook page – it also extends well beyond SEO. If the chosen keywords for a website fall out-of-a-favor due to an algorithm change, the business can make up for lost traffic via a robust social media community.

Where Does Google Plus Fit In? Google Plus may eventually be even more important than Facebook. It’s no secret that a whopping 97% of consumers use search when they want to find a local business, and since Search is owned by Google, a Google Plus integration has the potential to reap big dividends – the tech giant has already stated it plans to incorporate Google Plus into Google Places for small and large businesses alike. To this end, it is instructive for companies to get in early and mesh their business properties with company – and individuals, where applicable – profiles on Google Plus.

Take Advantage of the Google Plus Authorship Attribute The first order of business is to set up a Google Authorship link to website content. For companies with multiple authors of web content, this greatly enhances the business profile. Every piece of content the authors produce, whether for the company blog or as a guest blog poster, will have the author attribute attached to it and lead back to the primary website. For obvious reasons, this is tremendous for SEO; especially for frequent publishers: In the natural design of most websites, there’s a place in the Author bio section where the link to whatever Google Plus profiles are relevant can go. The rel=author HTML attribute has to be attached to make it show up correctly and count as the appropriate backlink. In the Google Plus profile of the business itself (or CEO, main operator, etc), a link to all websites where the author’s work shows up should be placed in the Contributor to section. IT helps the business gauge progress and the effect Google Plus Authorship has on SEO. A few of the important stats there shows how many clicks each guest article has received on the hosting domain, the number of impressions and the click-through-rate. Lastly, there is an option to ratchet up the direct Google Plus traffic a business experiences – beyond the search engine effect. Why not have people in the company’s Google Plus network come directly to the website? By placing a Google Plus badge on the website via the image hyperlink attribute, whenever someone reads a post on the Plus page, or happens upon the Plus profile, they

will see the link prominently. Ultimately, the benefits of Google Plus optimization are two-fold (at the very least): it raises company visibility through the authoritative content delivered by the writers, and it provides direction for future blog posts. The latter comes about through analysis of the impressions and clicks; the more popular articles clearly point to the content the business should be focusing on – as well as following-up on. As with web pages, the bigger and better the images, the greater the interaction. A Google Plus page might be business-oriented, but that doesn’t mean it should be staid. A company might consider investing in a designer to enhance the visual profile, which will reap dividends down the line.
