Chris Dill How Will Content Strategy Help Your Business Content strategy should be an important part of any marketing mix. Today, content is more important than ever with consumers receiving thousands of marketing messages each day. Just like companies use tools to avoid what they consider irrelevant content, so do customers, which is why a strong strategy for content is so important in today’s marketing world. Attract Customers The main purpose for advertising, whether it is the creation of a website, a commercial on the local radio station or a post card sent through the mail, is to attract customers. By creating content that is relevant and easy to find, customers are more likely to access and digest the information provided. Types of Content As part of a marketing strategy, it is important to remember that quality content consists of three basic types. These include: Expertise – Content that sets a company apart as an expert has been proven to gain more customers than other types of content. Awareness-building content does not specifically promote the company that created the content, but demonstrates expert knowledge in an industry, product, service or niche. Examples include blogs and whitepapers accessible online. Educational – Educational content is designed to educate the person who is reading the information. In this type of content, promotion of the company or product is more obvious, but the main objective of the information is to answer a problem a customer may have. For example, a pest control company may write a blog on preventative methods for keeping pests out of the home, ending with a call-to-action for the customer to contact their company for more information. Conversion – Creating an offer that a customer may take advantage of is another type of content that can lead to a bigger customer base. The offer must have value, such as a coupon, ebook, trial offer or free gift. Combined with expertise and educational content, offering a compelling value to a customer is one way to get the company message into their hands. Customer RetentionContent strategy should not end with a sale. In fact, useful content after a customer purchases is just as important as before they purchase. Once a customer makes a purchase, focused content will encourage them to return, especially if the initial content strategy made them feel as if a particular company was particularly knowledgeable. According to the White House Office of Consumer Affairs, it is six to seven times more costly for a company to attract a new customer than it is to retain those that they already have. In addition, a ten percent increase in customer retention increases the value of a company by 30 percent. As these statistics indicate, the fact that a good content marketing strategy helps retain customer’s shows just how important focusing on content should be. In today’s marketing world, content strategy has become increasingly important. New search engine algorithms now put more focus on good, quality content than ever before, further indicating the need for quality, well-written content in all areas of marketing.
