Foreword

The healing properties of music are a particularly significant topic in a country with a rich cultural heritage like Austria. So it is no coincidence that in 2008 Austria became one of only a handful of countries worldwide to introduce statutory regulations for music therapy professionals. Lower Austria was a driving force behind this achievement, a subject that the Mozart & Science congress also touches on. Mozart & Science 2017 will cover a variety of fascinating topics:  Music therapy from the perspective of neuroscience research  Interdisciplinary collaboration between music therapists and other health professions  Music therapy treatment for people with dementia  The role of music therapy in other cultures’ health systems Relational music therapy creates synergies between medicine and art. The focus is on the search for signs of effectiveness that meet the requirements for personalised (music) therapy and the evidence-related expectations of a modern health system. A breakthrough of this kind can only be made by taking a wide range of perspectives into account. Following the groundbreaking World Congress of Music Therapy in Krems in 2014, as well as the Best Practice Days and Mozart & Science conferences held in previous years, this event further underlines Lower Austria’s standing as a unique hub for music therapy research and teaching. We wish all participants a stimulating and inspirational conference!

Mag. Johanna Mikl-Leitner Governor of Lower Austria

DI Ludwig Schleritzko Member of the Lower Austrian government and NÖGUS Chairman 03

Editorial Dear congress participants, Thanks to the support of the Province of Lower Austria, since 2009 IMC Krems has become a leading centre for music therapy research, teaching and professional development. Using a textbook approach, the university has succeeded in establishing close ties between academic teaching, practice-driven research and clinical practice. Relevant issues from day-to-day clinical work feed directly into research conducted by the university’s lecturers and students. This environment provides fertile ground for pioneering work that sets new standards. For example, in 2015 Astrid Heine won the honorary prize of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science and Research for her master thesis. Collaboration with other universities in Austria and abroad has paved the way for implementation of the Bologna Process bachelor, master and PhD cycles. In September 2016, IMC University of Applied Sciences Krems set up its first health-related Josef Ressel Centre, which aims to carry out academic research into significant therapeutic encounters and provide training geared towards developing capacity for empathy. The Centre’s distinguishing feature is the combination of various scientific and methods-based approaches (videography, ECG, EEG, etc.), and work on developing a means of scheduling them is now in progress. In addition to the 2014 World Congress of Music Therapy, the long list of successful get-togethers staged since 2009 includes four Music Therapy Best Practice Day events, as well as the Mozart & Science Conference, taking place this year for the fifth time. All of these events illustrate how music therapy works in practice, the role played by musical biographies, and the ways in which this up-and-coming discipline can change the health system for the better, particularly in terms of personalisation. For this year’s conference, we have decided to place a particular emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches in an international context. Other key topics, such as the use of music therapy in treating autism and dementia, will likewise play an important part. The 2017 Mozart & Science Conference will also focus on neuroscience. Presentations at the event will look at the question of how complementary treatment methods such as music therapy, which are centred on the individual, artistic creativity and interpersonal encounters, can live up to the evidence-related and quality assurance requirements of day-to-day clinical practice without sacrificing the specific approaches adopted. The latest research findings, as well as research, teaching and musical cultures, and the fascinating interplay between cultures, values and health systems will be the focal point of discussions. I am particularly pleased that I will again be able to welcome so many well-known speakers to Krems this year. All of them possess outstanding academic expertise in the medical application of music therapy techniques.
