master Life Sciences
It all started with a big bang Bang! The Big Bang marked the beginning of our universe. And international careers start with an IMC Krems degree. Employers from the industry are looking for people with problem-solving abilities, and a strong practical focus is what sets our life sciences degree programmes apart. Laboratory work and research in clean room environments are only two examples of the way we prepare our students for their future careers. Our graduates will face a variety of challenges, and improving the quality of life of patients worldwide is top of the list.
Optimal combination of THEORY, PRACTICE & researCh The Department of Life Sciences acts as an international academic competence centre of interdisciplinary education and research and seeks to facilitate communication and interaction among a wide range of applied biomedical research areas including cancer, immunological disorders, toxicology, drug discovery and advanced bioprocess technologies. During the last decade, we have developed four R&D core platforms with cutting-edge infrastructure and sustainable scientific expertise and know-how: Drug Discovery and Development Bioanalytics Personalised Medicine and Diagnostics Bioprocess Technology and Production of Biopharmaceuticals Moreover, we have established an international scientific network including universities, research institutes, small and medium-sized enterprises and global pharmaceutical players. We have implemented quality management strategies (GLP) to meet the requirements of our industrial partners and promote an optimal level of translation of research into business. The R&D platforms are incubators for future scientific productivity and are likely to stimulate the launch of biotech start-ups in the region. It is our mission to bring cutting-edge research to our students in a very personal and authentic manner. Relevant R&D topics have been integrated into lectures and practical training on master curricula. The research activities are instrumental for high-quality education and for preparing the next generation of young scientists for careers in industry, research and academia.
ARTS During the fourth semester students must complete an “ARTS”(Applied Research and Training Semester) in the field of Biotechnology: Research institutes in Austria or abroad Austrian or foreign higher education institutions Austrian or foreign biotech companies
Scientists meet alumni and students The annual "International Life Science Meeting" is an important event during the study year of the Department of Life Sciences. Renowned scientists from university and non-university research institutions as well as leading personalities of the medical, pharmaceutical and biotechnological industries present their projects. The latest findings of biotechnology are presented at theme sessions. Numerous students and alumni of the department show their research projects results and participate actively in the discussions on challenges, chances, risks and findings of the life science sector. Embedded in the Biotech Area Krems, where small and large pharmaceutical companies have R&D and manufacturing facilities, graduates can profit from these close ties with the industry.
MEDICAL AND PHARMACEUTICAL BIOTECHNOLOGY
This master degree programme enables students to develop their methods-based and problem-solving expertise in the field of medical and pharmaceutical biotechnology. They study the processes of research and identification through to marketing. Management abilities and personality training are also important aspects of the programme.
Target Group The target group are Austrian and international graduates aiming to acquire in-depth knowledge and the skills and expertise needed for biotechnology product development and manufacturing. Most graduates go on to work in pharmaceutical and biotechnological companies and medical research centres.
CAREERS After completing the programme, graduates will be able to assume a wide range of biotechnological positions including research and development in the academic field as well as executive posts in industry worldwide. Some of our alumni have found an employment as quality managers in GLP/GMP or at international and national agencies. Their responsibilities will range from planning and conducting biotechnological processes and biomedical and analytical testing to coordination of production, quality control and registration of pharmaceutical products. They will also be qualified to work in marketing and distribution in pharmaceutical companies.

Krems – a university city on
Vienna's doorstep Highest concentration of higher education institutions in Austria With five universities within an area of 52 km2, Krems is the site of the most concentrated higher education cluster in Austria – and some would claim in the whole of Europe. Located in the greater Vienna region, Krems is less than an hour away from the Austrian capital by public transport. It has a population of about 25,000 and around 13,000 students – wherever you go there’s a great student feel about the town. A tip for the parents of international students: Krems is a very safe place where you can get almost anywhere on foot or by bike. Our foreign students love the area around the town, its charming Heuriger wine taverns and its large, cosmopolitan student community.
A unique historic town on the Danube Krems is nestled between the Danube river and hillside vineyards at the gateway to the Wachau valley – within one of the most beautiful cultural landscapes in Austria and a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Region. With a wide range of options for shopping, sports and outdoor activities, and everything that the historic, pedestrianised old town has to offer, there is plenty to do in your free time. Krems also has a diverse and burgeoning restaurant and café scene.
Young, dynamic and environmentally friendly Krems is a vibrant university town – friendly and welcoming, yet cosmopolitan thanks to its 13,000 students from more than 50 different countries. The young people give this charming town a flair all of its own. And Krems is a place where they rightly feel very comfortable and safe. Our students really appreciate being able to get around on foot or by bicycle and without a car or having to use public transport.
IMC Campus Krems – unrivalled in Austria Courses on IMC Krems' Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology degree programme take place at the ultramodern Campus Krems site. Practical lab courses are held in the programme’s state-of-the art laboratories – the ideal place to prepare for a future career. Over 10,000 people study at Campus Krems, and well over 2,000 of these are IMC Krems students. This inspirational location offers students outstanding quality of life and provides the perfect conditions for studying, socialising and enjoying a fantastic university experience.
